Restore from DVD

I have a G60-533CL Notebook laptop win 7 home. It crashed due to viruses, got nothing but blue screen of death on it. So i did a basic Recovery being sure to check off the back up box, that cost me ten DVD's. I backed up just fine, it reload everything OK too. My problem is i can't find anyplace to reload the backed up data? Any ideas? Thanks!
This question was solved.

On one of the backup disks, probably the first one, should be an .exe file named Recovery.exe or Restore.exe. Double click it to extract the files. It may take quite some time if you backed up 10 dvds worth of files.

  • Unable to restore from DVD set - ThinkPad keeps rebooting to Rescue and Recovery screen

    Hello:
    Lenovo x140e laptop / 2.05 BIOS:
    (image link removed)
I have used Lenovo Rescue / Recovery to make a full disk image backup to DVDs for installation of SSD drive.
Attempting to boot from Rescue / Recovery DVD appears to load Windows files, start Windows then goes to this Lenovo R&R screen:

No menus show up asking to restore anything, in about 5 seconds it shuts down and reboots again over and over.
I did have BIOS 2.01 and upgraded it using Lenovo BIOS boot DVD upgrader, now is 2.05 and same result.
Factory reset would be OK, but tI paid extra for Windows 7 pro "downgrade" (ironic, no?) that I would like to keep.  System restore disks that came with theunit are for Windows 8.1 .
    Help?

FYI that error is known as a "kernel panic", typically software related but potentially hardware related.
I recommend starting with a clean install (erase the hardware, and reinstall Mac OS X). Do not transfer/migrate any data yet. After you have created a new user account, test the computer to ensure the hardware seems responsive. If computer performance is positive, use Migration Assistant to began migrating your backups to your computer.

  • Error "The Connection Failed" in Time Machine, Migration Assistant and Restore From DVD

I am receiving this error when trying to connect to my Time Machine Backup in my Time capsule. I input the proper password to access my Time Capsule and It returns me to the screen with the caption "The connection failed" under the Time Capsule name in the "Select your Disk" screen. What would cause this error. I am connecting via WIFI (AirPort) and have full signal. I am using Mac OSX 10.6.8
I recently had my 1TB hard drive replaced and I am attempting to restore using Time Machine, migration assistant or from the startup dvd (tried multiple ways, no success). The initial setup of mac OSX 10.6 would not let me connect or other attempts after erasing hard drive and reinstalling OSX from disk.
Worked on it all weekend and don't have enough beer to drown the frustration, any help is appreciated.

You are correct TM is not at all easy to do a full restore.
To answer your question: Yes TM disk does show up in finder.
After my initial startup setup I was able to start TM and access all my previous backups. I migrated some files and was able grab the data from finder. Not satisfied with that I tried to do a restore to that previous date, to no success. I then erased the HD and reinstalled OSx and tried again from the setup screen. That didn't work, sulked over some beers. I then tired with Migration assistant...same result (more beer).
In starting TM after trying MA, only one backup was showing in the Star screen (today). None of my previous backups were showing. Since exiting TM it has been "Making Backup Disk Available" ( xGB of 6.29GB). Considering the size, I can only assume that these are my previous backups.
I have reviewed Pondini's posts, FAQs, and tutorials. I am a little scared to try and locate the drives through Terminal as in Pondini's TS #6 guide. If I can get my previous backups to show up, I will be happy with dragging files from Finder to restore my data and slowly work at restoring my settings/applications.

  • Satellite A65-SP159 - How to restore from DVD?

    HI friends
I have a Satellite A65-SP159 and the CD/DVD dont work. I have the DVD disc restore but I cant use this.
How I can restore my system?
The BIOS of this notebook only bootable from HDD.
many thanks and sorry for my bad english.
    regards from chile

    Hello
That means the CD/DVD drive is not listed in BIOS anymore?!
If not the CD/DVD rive seems to be malfunctioning
In this case you need a new compatible CD/DVD drive that you can reinstall Windows from Toshiba recovery disk.
You can get a new drive from an authorized service provider in your country. Just ask the guys, they will help you.

  • Restoring from DVD to new Drive.

Hey, I new my hard drive on my laptop was bailing so i backed up everything to DVD from my iTunes. Now it wont restore to the new drive. What do do.?

You can't make the Mac OS X installer boot and run from a hard drive for the operating system. It is not designed to work that way. If you wish to backup a system and not have to reinstall from CD, use a clone method of your existing working installation to hard drive*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
While a method has been made to make a duplicate Mac OS X installer disc, it isn't always able to work*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/bootcd.html
Not to mention any copy you make is for your own personal use only, unless the license you got says otherwise. Read licenses carefully.

  • A45-S120 - WinXP corrupted, unable to change boot order to restore from DVD recovery medium

I have a Toshiba A45-S120 laptop that has previously worked fine. I hadn't turned it on for several weeks. When I tried last week, after the WinXP splash screen came up, the progress bar completed one pass and then the video froze and showed a ghosted image of the WinXP logo off to the right of the real one and the two images were displayed in alternating vertical stripes, almost as thought you were looking through vertical blinds. At that point, there was no further boot progress.
Pressing Esc got me into the BIOS page, so it doesn't appear that there was a hardware video problem. The only options that I can could in the BIOS were the time and password (which is not set). With the recovery DVD in the drive, I couldn't get the system to boot to the CD/DVD drive no matter what I did. I tried all the suggestions of F12, F2, etc., and nothing highlighted any of the row of icons across the bottom of the Toshiba spalsh screen. When I booted, unless I pressed Esc, the system recognized the failed Windows boot and went into the text screen giving me all the safe mode start options.
After typing the above, I had one other thought - to try to force the issue, I replaced the hard drive with one that should have been blank but I got the same louvered WinXP logo. Thinking maybe I had a drive that wasn't blank as it should be, I tried a known blank drive. Now I get no response from the system at all when I try to power it on, even when swapping back to either of the other hard drives.
Is this stuff symptomatic of a dying system or is there something I can do to resurrect it and force the DVD restore somehow? Refurbishing desktops is a hobby of mine but I haven't had much experience with troubleshooting and repairing laptop issues, so thanks in advance for any pointers.

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Well, I have good news and confusing news to report...
The dongle worked as advertised.  I booted with it installed, powered down and removed it, then restarted the machine.  I was able to change the boot device and enter BIOS with the ability to change the boot order, etc.
I then ran the recovery process.  The ghosted image restored and then, when the machine restarted, I got the same problem that started it all... the WinXP splash screen came up, the progress bar completed one pass and then the video froze and showed a ghosted image of the WinXP logo off to the right of the real one and the two images were displayed in alternating vertical stripes, almost as thought you were looking through vertical blinds. There were also 4 or 5 thin vertical stripes that were flashing as though video was being displayed though them like it used to if you used an older monitor with a new system that couldn't display things properly.  At that point, there was no further boot progress.
In order to do a bit more troubleshooting, I booted the system with a live Linux CD - it booted and ran OK.  I then tried installing Ubuntu.  It started and then the screen went wonky again, with pixellating lines all over.  I then repartitioned it, ran scandisk on the hard drive overnight (no errors), and reran the recovery process.  Same shadow image when the XP splash screen appears - and it does this both during the ordinary booting process as well as during an attempted safe mode boot.
As I was typing the above, I remembered one other thing I meant to try.  I reset the BIOS to default values and reran the recovery process - still a messed up WinXP splash screen after the progress bar makes 2 or 3 passes.
If anyone has ideas, I'd be grateful for the help.

  • Can't restore from DVD

    Hello,
My Itunes library was recently corrupted. I have a backup of three DVD's that was made two or three years ago. Obviously it was made with a much earlier versions of Itunes than version 7. I do not get an option to restore when I insert the DVD. I have tried deleting the xml file and that didn't work to get my songs in from the DVDs. I have tried adding the folder option, but this only imports a few songs from the DVD, not the entire contents that I can see in explorer. At this point, I'm okay with losing my playlists if I can get the music files into Itunes from the DVD backup. They don't show up in Itunes when I copy them into library location in explorer. Is there a way to do this?
    Thanks for your help.

You can use an external bootable drive with a MacBook Pro -- check your manual or the built in help. Your problem is that for some reason, you can't install a bootable system on one. There are several reasons why Installer won't enable you to do so: insufficient space, incompatible partition scheme (should be GUID) or file system (should be HFS+ or similar), or wrong installation option selected.
It is possible this is related to why you can't drag the startup volume to the destination box in Disk Utility. It must be an HFS+ variant file system.
I think you should check carefully with D.U. the partition scheme of all your drives & the file system format of all the volumes involved. Also run repair disk, as someone has already pointed out.
The behavior with the Restore function is not normal -- you should be able to drag a volume to the destination box from the list.

  • Intel Mac Mini crash.  Restore from TimeMachine failed.  Reinstall from DVD failed

I am at a loss.  My Mac Mini (Intel 2.53ghz, 10.6.7, 4gb RAM) froze today.  Mouse would still move the cursor, but nothing responded.  After letting it go for perhaps a half hour, waiting for a chance to get control back or to perhaps relaunch Finder, I gave up and turned it off by holding down the power button.  On reboot, it would not make it past the startup screen.  I inserted the restore DVD that came with this Mac Mini, it booted from the DVD and I tried reinstalling OSX 10.6 from the DVD.  It proceeded to around 30% install and crashed.  I turned it off again, started up again form the DVD, and went into Disk Utility.  I verified the internal HD and it had no errors and nothing to repair.  This time I went directly to a restore from my TimeMachine backup.  (I had actually installed one new program today, and in case that program was the issue I chose a restore from the morning a few hours before that new program was added.)  The restore progressed to 86.6%, then crashed.  I saved the installer log to an external drive.
I took a few hours away from it, but came back after a few hours.  I attempted to boot from the DVD again, and it would not get beyond the Apple sreen.  I turned it off by holding down the power button, unplugged the power supply, and searched online for around 30 minutes.  After finding little online, I booted from the DVD again, this time succesfully, and am currently running a TimeMachine restore again which I started after I began typing this entry because, honestly, when I started typing this I didn't think it would boot from the DVD again.  At the moment, the resotre is at 12.7%, but considering it crashed at 86.6% last time, I'm not too hopeful.
Any thoughts or advice?  I'm not totally freaked out as I keep all documents on two external drives and backed up, in addition to having a 2tb TimeMachine drive with this system, all connected by fw800.  But... it's not like I don't want to get this Mac Mini working again.  It's from November 2009 an I don't have Apple Care for it, which I suppose means they'll charge me a fortune if I take it in.   (I'm grateful to have this 11.6" MacBook Air to work on.)
Until Disk Utility told me that the internal drive was okay, I was thining I should try sticking a new hd inside and reinstalling from there.  Not sure what to do if this TimeMachine restore fails.  (at 18.5% now.)
My thanks to any who read this.

Thanks for responding.  I forgot to come here and delete this thread.  As it turned out, I switched from trying to use the OSX Install disc that came with the Mac Mini and instead used a Snow Leopard retail dvd.  That disc worked perfectly.  Pretty disturbing that the dvd that came with the computer would not work, while a store bought one worked.  Glad I bought a retail version of OSX to hackintosh a dell mini or I wouldn't havebeen able to fix this.

  • Windows 7 fail to restore from hp dvds when almost finished.

I have a windows 7 computer that was compromised by virus then viruses, then the viruses removed themselves.
As such, the compouter was considered compromised including any recover partitions.
    So,,,
    backup data
I order recover cds from HP, paying money for them.
I turn on computer , press F9  choose to boot from dvd drive .
Follow instructions to erase computer, and reinstall OS.
    put in all 3 discs.
It formats hdd, copys files to drive, reboots a number of times during process  like it is susposed to
Then it says install failed withthe following details
NOTE- The WIFI on the computer was turned off prior to the reinstall., I saw some mentions of this being a problem with hp for some reason.. But the wifi light is on after install progresses a little..
I looked at the following log file and the main stuff I saw failing was extra  - usless applications
When it fail, no options to access windows, just retry. That is pretty usless since retrying the same thing usually gives the same result.
The system also PASSED all the hp system tests  - memory, hdd....
It appears to be poorly designed HP restore disc.
for it to actually be failing because a drive ir not active then the os is installing???  Or one of the bloat ware programs did not install?????
Right now the computer is a paper weight.
The virus was better than the hprestore dvd.
I will be contacting Costco ( place of purchase) on this in a few days. Maybe they have some pull with HP

Your problem is not the same one I have.
there three discs in the restore process, and to be clear so you do not misunderstand
when the restore process finishes with EACH and every discs, it EJECTS it IMMEDIATELY.
And since this is a laptop computer, the drives can only be physically closed.
On an different note for anyone else  for someone with experiance with my problem,
during the restore process the only real option is to skip the supplemental disc. _______Same result.
I changed the computer date to 2012 ._____ same result
Just before it reboots the final time, after it installs the system drivers, you can see there is a windows desktop screen including an icon for the sample/test drive Office 2010
After it fails, I run a program to look at the partitions of the 750gb drive,
these some small ones ( one or two 5 gig or less)
A 70gb partition that looks like normal windows partition.
and 670 gb FREE unallacated as a partition.
So either the software automatically deleated the real windows partition when a "failed install" is detected
Or the HP factory created restore discs are improperly coded
The invoice did state "hp Costco restore" discs.
Which leads me to understand there is something different about Costco restore discs. That would increase the changes of a alternate variation with less persons buying the restore discs could  actually be  nonfunctional and not noticed .

  • How can i restore from Recovery Disk if my notebook's hard drive and dvd drives are dead.

Hi. Good day. My hard drive just crashed and im trying to restore from my restore disks. Unfortunately, my dvd is dead too. I copied the recovery disks to a new hard drive and tried booting from a flash drive but the noteebook is still giving me the SMART hd error message. Please help. Thanks.

    Hi,
If you have, or can borrow an external CD/DVD drive it would be worth trying this although I'm not certain your notebook will support booting from a drive connected via USB.
Another option may be to see if you can find a second hand optical drive on somewhere like Ebay - the drives compatible with your notebook can be found on Page 59 of your Maintenance & Service Guide.  It may even be worth removing a re-seating your existing drive just in case this helps as described in this section.
Does the drive show up in Device Manager?  If it does, right click it and select Properties.  Select the driver tab and see if there is an error code in the status box.
    Regards,
    DP-K

  • Can't restore from Disk Utility while booted from OS installation DVD

    I'm absolutely astounded by this.
I have a new MacBook Pro 17". I restored my files to it and in short order, had it too full/fragmented to re-partition it for Boot Camp.
So I decided to image the disk and store that image file on a FireWire drive, wipe the system disk and restore it cleanly from the image file backup, hoping that would result in contiguous blocks used so that I could then re-partition for Boot Camp.
When booted off the OS X for Intel DVD-ROM disc (10.4.6 - the one that came with my MacBook Pro), if I get out of Installer and into Disk Utility, if I select the internal hard drive and click the Restore tab, I can easily select the hard drive backup image with the button. But the "Destination Disk:" box is only accessible via dragging the disk to the box.
There's one little problem - there is no Desktop, so the disk(s) do not appear on the Desktop. There is no way to drag the target disk to be restored to into the Destination Disk: box. You cannot drag a disk out from the little sidebar inside the Disk Utility window over to the Destination box. I tried. You can't drag any disk anywhere from that sidebar. It's clear that the only way to drag a disk anywhere is if it's shown on the Desktop in Finder (which isn't running when the installation DVD-ROM is booted from). There is simply no way that I can find to restore a disk drive from a saved backup disk image when booted from the installation DVD-ROM.
Please tell me I'm ******** and missing something, or if there's a Better Way to do this. (I can't seem to run Retrospect while booted off the DVD-ROM, so I can't restore from my Retrospect full backup of the disk, either. Joy!)
(I'm really curious if there's a Better Way - especially because it appears I can't boot from an external FireWire or USB 2.0 drive, so I need something that will work in this extremely limited installation DVD-ROM booted environment, I think.)
MacBook Pro 17" dual 2.16 GHz ;   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   Booted from Mac OS X for Intel 10.4.6 installation DVD-ROM

  • When I try to restore my iTunes library from DVD, iTunes stops copying the files after some minutes

On 2 of my 9 DVDs, iTunes stops copying and I can't do anything with iTunes anymore. I have to reboot my computer. So I'm not able to bring back all my files. Has anyone got help?

Thanks but I already did read all of the help notes, which aren't very helpful for this.  I did find out the problem- Apple.....they evidently changed one of the major upsides to their old software- being able to back up your entire library onto dvd's- so you can longer do that or restore from the dvds created from older versions of itunes.  I suspect greed is at play in that Apple now wants you to pay $24.95 per year to use a "cloud" service where they back it up for you.  I can buy a lifetime supply of back up dvds for one year's worth of cloud.  So I am now looking into other music software as I am Appled-out.  There is no reason for them to take away the back up portion of the software other than to sell you thrir cloud service.  As we have already given them a ton of money for 5 Ipods and a bunch of music, I think we have contributed enough.  Time to look to solutions outside of the Apple money tree.  But thank you for reading and replying.

  • Problem Restoring iTunes backup from DVD

I've searched and haven't seemed to find an answer to my particular issue, so if this has been asked and answered apologies. Here's my situation:
I am able to backup my entire library on my windows computer to move everything over to my imac. During the backup I didn't get any error messages. I restore the backup from DVD but for some reason one of the disks just will not restore and I have to keep skipping it. I can open it up and I see the files there, compilation folder with songe folders inside, some audio books, an album or two purchased from iTunes and a few albums from CDs that I actually own the physical media. I presume something is corrupted but don't know what.
My question is this: has anyone else experienced a similar situation and if so, were you able to get the disk to restore? If not, is there a way that I can select just the items from this bad disk to backup so that I don't have to do the entire back up again? As previously mentioned, I can browse the "bad" DVD and can see the items and folders? At the very least, I'd like to backup and restore the itunes purchased music and audio books and compilations; the other items I can just import from the cds that I own.
Thanks...I'm really getting frustrated after having tried this five or six times.

can somebody help i/m basically having the same problem but my error message says an unknown error occurred

  • Restore and consolidate multiple libraries from DVD

    Hi,
although I think this is probably a common question I have yet to find an answer in the forums.
To free some HDD space, I have backed up parts of my iPhoto 09 lib to DVD and deleted them from the library. Of course, some albums that had photos of these parts in them, are now incomplete.
Meanwhile I have bought a bigger HDD that could accomodate the whole library again. Is there a way to restore the photos from those DVDs to get back to the lib I had before? To even complete the albums again would be best.
But so far, when I reimport the pictures from DVD, iPhoto does not even recognize modified pictures and their originals, they are each shown as separate pictures.
    Sigh, any help?

Copy the Library intact from the DVD to the Desktop and then use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager ($20) to merge them.
Or, when you see the disk show up in the iPhoto Window drag the Events from the disk to the Library heading on the left of the iPhoto Window.
    Regards
    TD

  • Is there a limit to how many times u can restore itunes from DVD-R?

I have had to restore my whole itunes library twice this week due to hard drive probs. Do DVD-R's have a limit to how many times u can restore from them, or does itunes itself have a limit to how many times u can restore. Should I start over, with whole new back-up onto new DVD-R's?
    Thanks
    Tracy

You shouldn't have to. DVD-Rs are supposed to be good for about 50 years or so...
