Restore iphoto library from external disk backup

Dear all,
I need to restore all the iPhoto library after have backup and formatted my MacBook pro with iPhoto11.
Before to format the hard disk I have copied all the "Pictures" folder to an external HDD and it also includes a file named "iPhoto Library".
Then I have formatted the hard disk, installed the OS Montain Lion and iPhoto11 and the iPhoto library was empty at the beginning.
I tried to simply copy the file "iPhoto Library" from the external hard drive backup and substitute the original emply file. Then when I run the iPhoto it said "iPhoto library was probably created with a newer version of iPhoto and cannot be opened" and I could just quit. So I have restored the original empty file.
I've noticed that the file "iPhoto Library" is an archive and can be opened by itself. Is there a way to copy the right files from that archive?
I tried to find a solution in the website http://support.apple.com/kb/PH2504 but it's not valid in my case.
Hope you guys can help me since I had very important pictures in the archive!!
Thanks in advance.

  • Restoring iPhoto Library from Time Machine Backup

    Hi,
My iTunes collection and iPhoto library live on an external HD. A week or so ago that external HD failed. Thankfully I have been using TimeMachine to back up to another external HD. Yesterday, I went into TimeMachine, clicked TimeMachine Backups in the TimeMachine Finder and restored my iTunes library to a location on a new external HD. Once the copy was complete, I opened iTunes and all was well. I tried this same process with iPhoto and it didn't not work. iPhoto keeps giving me the message that my iPhoto library is in use by another application or I need to upgrade. I tried holding down the Option key to select the library on my new external HD and that didn't work. I also tried option + command and the option to restore from an automatic backup in iPhoto automatically crashes iPhoto. Then, I launched iPhoto Library Manager and it said my DB file was missing. What's the right process to restore my iPhoto library from a TimeMachine backup (external HD to external HD)?
    Thanks!

It is an option. You can overwrite or keep both when you restore

  • Help restoring library from external disk backup

I recently had to reformat my hard drive, and I backed up my entire "Pictures" folder to the external drive. Is there a simple way to restore my library to my original disk and get all of my data back without having to re-import everything?

    Jbooye
    Random answer: Perhaps.
It depends on what you want to achieve...
The advantage to a back up utility such as Chronosync or DejaVu is that they will execute incremental back ups - which is quite handy as your library grows. With incrementation, after the first back up (which copies the entire library) the subsequent runs simply update the library with the changes. This is much quicker with large libraries. Also, depending on the app, you can schedule back ups to run automatically.
But at heart, backing up is simply making a copy of the iPhoto Library Folder...

  • Restore iphoto library from external drive

    Help - I'm in a panic!
Our iPhoto library is housed on an external drive, and opens automatically from that external drive when we plug a device in or open iPhoto. I plugged in my iPhone today to upload photos, I was prompted to update to a newer version of iPhoto, and upon completing the update my iPhoto library now says that it is corrupted and needs to be backed up. I can't find the library in Time Machine to back it up - it is not detecting my external drive when I go to past backups. Help! How do I restore my library?

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In Library Manager it's the FIle -> Rebuild command)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Help Restore iPhoto Library from external drive

Shortly after upgrading to Maverick my hard drive died, a complaint for another board.  Anyway, I was foolish and did not back up my hard drive.  However, after apple replaced the hard drive I had them give me the old drive.  I bought a case for it and was able to manually pull over all the data I needed except for the iPhoto library.  I noticed when pulling the information over if I pulled an entire folder over that more than15gb or so it would fail.  But if I went an pulled over some groups of them (about 1GB) at a time it would work.  The problem is the iPhoto Library only shows as on file/folder, and I cant figure out how to access it as indidivuals files.  Is there a way to break up the iPhoto library into all the files so I can pull them over.  The file is currently about 150gb and fails everytime I try to drag it over.

The library is a package and can be entered as shown in this screenshot:
So if you can't move the entire library over at one time you can do the:
Launch  iPhoto Library Manager  and use it to rebuild the library on the EHD.  However, have the rebuild library be created on the new internal HD.

  • Had to restore iPhoto library from external hard drive.  Key Photos Blank!

Photos seem to be there, but the key photos are either blank or all have the same one photo.  How can I restore the key photo setting to automatically use the first photo in each group?
Is there anything else I need to do to formalize this process and get iphoto running normally again?
    Thanks!

Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Include the option to rebuild the thumbnails - it can take three or four goes to work.

  • Trying to restore iPhoto library from TimeMachine - "not enough space" even though there is

Hi all, I'm trying to restore my iPhoto library from the timemachine backup which is roughly 200gb in size.
Timemachine is on an external hard drive, of course.
Main laptop hard drive has roughly 408gb left. Whenever I try to restore the 200gb iPhoto library backup from timemachine, it says I don't have enough disk space... I am so frustrated.. I don't want to lose all my photos from the past 5 years ..
    Please help.
I am using the newest Lion, everything is updated.

moving stuff to trash doesn't remove it from a drive. It puts it in a hidden .Trash folder on that drive. you have to empty trash to reclaim space. even easier would be to reformat the drive if you have a lot of stuff to erase.

  • Can't read iPhoto library from external drive

I suddenly can't can't read iPhoto library from external drive. I have talked to WD and nohing is wrong with the network drive. I can open images and files from it. But, I can't read in iPhoto Library.

    Network Drive? a NAS?
iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, exporting, saving edits and sharing the photos.
Basically, you need to move the library to a correctly formatted disk.

  • Restoring iPhoto library from time machine

How does one restore iPhoto library from time machine. When I attempt to do so time machine downloads 2/3 of the library and then says:  operation cannot be completed because you do not have permission to access iPhoto library.  Any advice?  I am using so 10.8.2

Try the methods pondini gives here.
    http://pondini.org/TM/15.html
Look at the specifics for iphoto..
It is not easy as the versions have changed.. if you are trying to restore a version older than the OS.. not sure what willl happen.
You might also need to do a full restore to an external drive and pluck the library out of there.

How do I restore iTunes library from flash drive backup?

How do I restore iTunes library from flash drive backup?
    HI Brigdool,
It depends how you made the backup.
If you copied your entire iTunes folder onto the flash drive, just copy it back to the appropriate place on the computer.
If you copied individual folders or files, add them back to iTunes by inserting the flash drive in your computer, and then dragging the files into your "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder.
The first method recreates your library as it was, with all playcounts, playlists, etc.  The second method builds a new library with the same content.

iPhoto crashed. When reopened, 70+  some events were grayed out (no photos).  Restored iPhoto library from Time Machine, fewer grayed events.  Said yes to a msg on fixing library, 3000 more photos. Still wrong.  What next to do?

Do you still have the library that you were using when the crash occurred?  If so apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
2 - run Option #4 to rebuild the database.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button and select the library you want to add in the selection window..
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.

  • Trying to rebuild my iphoto library from time machine backup and it still says 0 restored with a grey screen and the circle. How can i restore my library?

I just bought a new Macbook pro and i tried to rebuild my iphoto library from a time machine backup on an external hard drive. Even after pressing command+option when starting iphoto and selecting rebuild library from automatic backup, it still doesn't work with the grey screen with the white circle and a little window that says 'rebuilding library: 0 versions restored'. I also tried to make a copy of my iphoto library but that did not work either. how can i restore my iphoto library or at least gain access to my photos?

    Your question is not clear
Rerairing or rebuilding the iPhoto library never involves using Time Machine in any way
TM is a totally seperate program and you can "restore" a file (including the iPhoto library) from the past using TM - you launch TM and go back to the time you want and select the file (or folder or package) you want and click restore - it probably is best to keep the current one until you are sure everything is good

  • Restoring iPhoto Library from a backup

Hi, I recently bought the backup program "Backblaze" just in time! I few days ago I accidentally lost my entire iPhoto library. Luckily after a 12.4 GB download (which took about a day and a half - man backblaze is awesome!) I had my library back. There is one difference. Instead of a package with a cute icon called "iPhoto Library" the restored version has the same file structure except that the package is now just a folder named "iPhoto Library." This means that I can't simply drag it into the photos folder.
My question. Can I drag the contents of the restored "iPhoto Library" folder into my now empty "iPhoto Library" package?
In case that was confusing, here is a picture:
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1347667/SnapNDrag66.jpg

I restored the library in a folder - not a package. You can not simply open the folder in iPhoto.
But, I decided to just try it and see what happens - it worked.
I held down option when starting iPhoto, then created a new library. Then I closed iPhoto, showed that package's contents and then dragged the contents of the backblaze backup into the new iPhoto library telling finder to replace everything. My iPhoto library is now fully functional.

  • IPhoto Won't Load Images in iPhoto Library from External HD

    Hi all.
Accidentally unplugged my father's external hard drive which hosts his iPhoto library without ejecting. Since then, iPhoto has opened the library but displayed zero content. The photos are still there, I located them in the iPhoto Library's "Old Masters" folder, however, the "Masters" folder is empty. As I said, the images are there, but I suspect they aren't in the right place for iPhoto to see and display them. How can I get them back?
He has a mid-2007 iMac running both the latest version of Yosemite and iPhoto.
    Thanks!
    Kyle

No, unfortunately. He has a 320gb HD and a 307gb library. However, that post reflects all of the symptoms we had. I'll check it out. Thank you!
If substituting "Old Masters" for "Masters" does not help, there is not much hope to fix this. The iPhoto Library First Aid Tools did not work in the previous similar cases.
The best option would be to restore the library from the most recent backup.  Otherwise you can only copy the "Old Masters" out of the library and reimport them to iPhoto into a new library and essentially start over. IPhoto has no tools to connect missing original image files to the edited versions like Aperture has.
