Restored mac - iphone doenst recognize itunes - erase and sync
HI,
I recently had to completely restore my Mac Book Pro... complete re-install everything, OSX Mavericks, itunes, the whole 9 yards. Problem - My iphone was synced with the same computer, but now it doesnt recognize it as its "home" itunes library. So when i connect the iphone, it says the iphone is synced with another library and for me to sync it with this "new" library, i need to erase and sync, which of course i do not want to do.
Basically i just got a new iphone 6, and was able to back up my 5s and restore it on the 6, but 2 things didnt come along in the restore, videos, and ring tones. That is when i tried to to sync the videos and ring tones thru itunes, i came across this problem.

Once I have moved my iTunes media file to my new mac, will I have to erase and sync my iPod?
I have successfully managed to move my itunes media file from my windows pc to my new mac and all is well. However, of course it hasnt copied my itunes, its just copied all the stuff in it. So information about the number of times a song has been played or any playlists have not been copied over. Can i get this information? What will happen when I plug in my iPod to sync? Will I have to erase and sync?
Thank you for your prompt response - I did as you said and did a drag and drop into the iTunes window - it imported and got my album art from the net. When I started Itunes with the shift key down I was prompted to choose a library but since I copied over the media folder and not the library folder I was unable to select that so I guess I will have to create a new library and add in all the music, videos, etc. unless I wait for my laptop and export the library or at least that seems to be the case? In short, all my data (iTunes media folder) is on my external drive and can be added to the blank iTunes screen but I can not choose a library folder. Is there anyway around completely making all those playlists again? I am not sure my laptop will survive the shop with data intact and really hate to start over on those.
In an unrelated question - I collect old TV shows from the 1950's. Can I make playlists within the home video folder somehow? In other words like one for Quiz shows, one for comedies, one for police and detective shows, etc. while I am remaking all my playlists for my music if I end up having to go that route?

Using two iPhones with iTunes - erase and sync message
Me and my fiancée both have an iPhone 4. I connect to iTunes regularly and it does so automatically when I tether my phone to the lap top for Internet. We each have seperate Apple accounts. When I connected hers yesterday to add some music I got an 'erase and sync' message saying that her phone was linked to another iTunes library. We only have one lap top and so have only ever had the phones connected to that one iTunes on it. If I erase and sync will that delete all her apps, pictures etc And replace with the ones I have on my phone that have backed up to iTunes. We want to have different apps and photos.
With our iPods we set them to manual and there's no problem, but with the iPhone there is.
I don't think it matters but I'm on ios5 and she is on ios4, both are iPhone 4.No, I hadn't thought of that. I would have had my phone plugged in before and when I plugged her phone in I wasn't prompted for a password. So no, she wouldn't have been signed in.
So, if I sign out of my account and sign in to hers, I shouldn't get this problem of being prompted to erase and sync? -

You can't get it reset; if you could there would be no point in having it. If you have an encrypted backup there are two ways this could have happened:
You checked "Encrypt Backup" in iTunes at some time in the past, either intentionally or by accident
You have a corporate MS Exchange account and your Exchange administrator installed a security profile on your phone that requires the phone'a contents to be encrypted. This, in turn, requires the backup to be encrypted for obvious reasons.
In either case you were prompted for a password the first time you backed up after whichever of these happened. So think about what you might have entered for a password at that time. Fortunately you get an unlimited number of tries. Other threads on this subject have shown that it is always a password known to the user, so it wasn't something made up by iTunes. Also, everyone who has figured it out has found it to be a different password type, so try your Apple ID password, your computer's login password, your WiFi password, your corporate domain password, etc. And try passwords that may have been changed since your first backup. As a last resort there is a professional password cracker available, but it isn't cheap - it's targeted at the law enforcement market - from Elcomsoft. There are also some scam password crackers available that don't actually work and possibly steal your information. It's likely that a developer of one or more of these will post a response with a link (possibly hidden) to their "product". When itunes says erase and sync will all my apps be erased as well?
I recently got a new computer and was installing iTunes for my iPhone. I have a Toshiba laptop with Windows 8. Anyways it said that in order to sync my iPhone it had to 'erase and sync' from the old computer to be able to work on this computer. I was just wondering that if i did this if all of my apps and contacts would be erased as well?
I have restored my iPad to factory settings in the past. I backed up, transferred purchases and synced with iTunes before I restored. When the entire process was complete, everything was back in place exactly as it was before I restored.
If you do it correctly, you should be fine and everything should transfer back to your iPad when you are done. -

If you have a graphic of iTunes and a cable displayed on your iDevice then it is in Recovery mode.

I recently purchased a new Macbook Pro. I am trying to add music onto my iPhone 5 from iTunes, but it isn't working. I read the discussions to manually add music, but when I try, I get this pop up message:

An iPhone can be synced with only one iTunes library at a time. Erasing and syncing replaces the contents of this iPhone with the contents of this iTunes library.
So, I backed up my iPhone to the computer, in hopes that everything on my phone would not get erased. However, I didn't "erase and sync" yet.
My only concern is that the old iTunes library I had on my old Dell computer was with a different Apple ID, so how does this affect me?
Will everything on my phone get erased even though I backed up my phone? Why can't I transfer music onto my phone with my new iTunes? I've tried everything. Please help me!

First, if you back up your iPhone in iCloud, you don't need a computer to restore the backup. If you use a different library or PC to sync the device, it will be erased automatically, so you have to copy the iTunes library from the computer that you use to sync the device in order to keep all your data on the phone. The answer is that it won't transfer the library to the new computer: copying the iTunes library to the new PC is enough -
So I have the iPhone 5. My old computer crashed so I ended up purchasing a new computer and re-installing and downloading all my old music and new music.
When I connect my iPhone to my new computer I can sync music but the old music still remains on my iPhone as well as the new music.
There's a lot on the phone that I don't want anymore but I can't seem to figure out how to erase it.
I don't want to restore the iPhone so I don't lose all my old messages and so forth.
I have all of the latest updates for the iPhone and well as iTunes.
If anyone has any answers to help that would be awesome!

It sounds like you are not getting the prompt to erase and sync your device. This indicates to me that Manual Syncing was enabled on the original iTunes Library, and becuase of that it is also now enabled on your new computer.
This is changable in the Summary tab of iTunes when you have your device selected, and this article will help you do that:

Connect the device to your computer.
Open iTunes.

I got a Mac and i downloaded new music on it and im trying to sync the music on this computer to my iPhone which is hooked up to another iTunes and iTunes is saying " An iPhone can be synced with only one iTunes Library at a time. You can only sync one iTunes Library from Mac to iPhone.
And just so are you aware, Apple ID accounts cannot be merged, thus merging content > Frequently asked questions about Apple ID -
i restored my iphone 3gs to factory settings and now when i turn it on it says to connect it to itunes well i tried that and its not working then i tried to hold the power button for three seconds then the home button for ten seconds but still nothing please help asap

3. Don't try to downgrade the iOS version. This isn't supported
4. If you EVER tried to hack thie phone or use apps like tinyumbrella, you may have to edit the hosts file on your computer to remove references to gs.apple.com
5. If your phone has been hacked (jailbroken, iOS downgrade, or unauthorized unlocking), you may not be able to restore the phone to Apple specs again.

How do I keep my downloaded content on my iPhone 4 when connectng to iTunes? It says erase and sync. I want to keep what I have downloaded, and manually manage contend on iTunes. Can I do this without it saying erase and sync?
No backup? Never a good idea to not maintain a backup of your important data. If you do not have a backup, follow these instructions:
By design, the iphone will sync itunes content with one computer at a time. Any attempt to sync such content with a second computer will result in ALL itunes content being first erased from your phone & then replaced with the content from the second computer. This is a design feature and cannot be overridden. Because you formatted your computer, your phone, will see your computer as a "new" computer. The itunes content sync is one way: computer to phone. If you have photos that were synced to your phone or music ripped on your own that were not backed up, you will first have to extract them from your phone using third party software, before you do anything else:

Once you've done that, do the following in the order specified:
1. Disable auto sync when an ipod/iphone is connected under preferences in itunes(under the edit menu).
2. Make sure you have one contact & one event in whatever supported applications you use for contact & calendar syncing. These entries can be fake, doesn't matter, the important point is that these programs not be empty.
3. Connect your phone, itunes running, do not sync at this point.
4. Store>Authorize this computer.
5. File>Transfer Purchases(To make sure all purchased content on your phone will be in your itunes library).
6. Right click in the device pane & select reset warnings.
7. Right click again and select backup.
8. Right click again & select restore from backup, select the backup you just made. When prompted to create another backup, decline.
9. This MUST be followed by a sync to restore your itunes content, which you select from the various tabs, You'll get a popup regarding your contacts & calendars asking to merge or replace, select merge.
That's as good as it gets without a backup of your itunes library and other important data.. -
New iPhone 6 - "erase and sync" to iTunes library to add non-iTunes music
I'm handy with technology, but not a tech head so bear with me.
My iPhone 5 16GB died so I bought a iPhone 6 64GB. Set it up and then "restored" my old iPhone 5 info from my iTunes backup onto it. So far, so good.
I want to manually add music from the iTunes library onto the new phone. The Music app on my new phone shows I can download from the Cloud any songs onto to it that I purchased thru iTunes. Fine. But I want to move over some of the many songs I added to iTunes over the years from CDs, other online services, etc.
When I click "Manually manage music and video" and try to sync music I get the infamous "The iPhone is synced with another library. Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync to this library?"
This sounds like what I should do without worry as I have the phone recently backed up to the Cloud AND my iTunes, and have done little with the new phone since buying it. I've put all the iPhone photos on a hard drives, too. So if i "erase and sync," will this just repopulate my phone with all the previous info backed up on iTunes (photos, contacts, calendar, apps, etc) PLUS the music I want to manually add from the iTunes library?
I know this may sound elementary to some of you, but honestly - I can't find any clear explanations online of what will be deleted and what will be added with the "erase and sync" in this situation.

In your Music Library, or do you mean on the Music Tab that you can only see when you hook your device up to iTunes and select the device? (i.e., in the same place where you see the "Summary" page).
