Restoring after hard drive crash

Hi-  I had a hard drive crash. I had everything backed up on Carbonite. So I've reinstalled Lightroom 4.2 and am a little confused on how to restore everything back to Lightroom with all my metadata and changes etc
I am using Windows 7 and have already restored my files back onto the computer. I've done some research but it makes my head hurt and have seen several different ways to do it . I just want to make sure I don't mess it up. Can anyone help, please I would be very appreciative.
Thank you,
Steve

I didn't want to get into a what I should have done and yes I know better than what I actually have done.
Yes my most recent uncorrupted one is not that recent - I had deleted the some for space.

  • Incorrect restore after hard drive crash

My Macbook pro hard drive became corrupted and disk utility could not repair it. So, reformatted the hard drive, reinstalled all SW (OS 10.6.8 etc)
Used migration assistant to restore data from my external drive (time machine backup) but ended up with 2 identities, 2 accounts that do not have permission to look at each other's files. How can I merge these two accounts, or at least copy data from one to the other?

  • Hi Clever people restore after hard drive crash

    Please some advice.
Hard disk has crashed. Luckily under warranty so replaced and Apple re-installed my original OS X. Should I restore all my data and application though system restore on start up Installer or use migration assistant? I dont think they did any updates so would imagine that if I do complete restore from time capsule I will be getting the most up to date OSX? Many thanks

That I can't help with since I don't use TM, relying instead on bootable clones. Peruse  http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html and

  • Firefox was just restored after hard drive crashed, and it won't allow me to use the search function, so what do I do?

After I enter an address to search, my address is deleted when I press "enter" so I cannot get to the Web address I'm searching for. Firefox page is up but the only way I can get to any address is if it's one I've already been on and it's in my history. I can't search for unknown people or places. Can you tell me why?

Use Start > Run > Diskmgmt.msc <Enter> to start the Disk Management Console.

Start iTunes, all should be well...

  • How do I unactivate after hard drive crash?

Just purchased an upgrade to CS6 Photoshop from CS3 Photoshop but hard drive crashed before I could uninstall it. How do I deactivate after hard drive crash? Do I need to or can I just load my full CS3 copy and then upgrade it to my new CS6?

You can just install CS6 directly.  You will be prompted to enter your qualifying serial number from CS3 during the install process.

  • How to restore itunes after hard drive crash

How do you restore your itunes library after my PC hard drive crashed?

    Hi Toboggan,
If you are looking to restore your iTunes data from a backup, you may find the following article useful (while it is focused on moving between computers, many of the steps should also apply to your situation):

  • Restoring 10.7.X after hard drive crash

My 2007 Macbook had a hard drive crash. I replaced the drive, reinstalled 10.6 (and updates) from the purchased disk, and restored all of the original software.
I was previously running 10.7, Lion, but now I am unable to find this on the App Store. I originally purchased 10.7 from the App Store by download, but I do not have a hard copy of the OS? I would like to get it back to 10.7. I understand that the Macbook will not be compatible with Mountain Lion.
    How do I do this?

  • Time Machine after hard drive crash

Recently, my MacBook's hard drive crashed. Fortunately, I had most of my data backed up via Time Machine. So, once Apple installed a new hard drive, I "restored all" with Time Machine. Now when I launch Time Machine, my archive only goes back a few days, to when I initially "restored all" -- before, my archives went back to November. Where did all of my backups go? How can I get them to show up in Time Machine?

when TM does the first backup after a full system restore it sometimes does a complete (or nearly complete) backup. This happened to me once. this creates a big space demand to accommodate that backup and if there is not enough space TM will start deleting old backups to create space. To check this open TM drive in finder, go to Backups.backupdb->computer-name folder. all available backups will be listed there chronologically. how far back does it go?

  • How to disable audible account after hard drive crash

I have had 2 computer hard drive crashes that were authorized iTunes accounts.  Since they crashed, I don't know how to de-authorize them. What happens after all 5 of my authorized account computers crash?  I can no longer listen to music purchased through iTunes?
I hope there is a way to de-authorize a computer that crashed.  Can anyone help!

I believe this might of worked after all. I did like you said and double clicked on the My Catalog file. PSA and it just put in the timeline and dates on the pictures but had a ? mark and no picture. I then chose to dowload files from the My pictures folder that the downloader was directed to for each download. It seems to restoring the photo's and putting them with the tags and all. I am so relieved because I had 37,500 pictures that would of been untagged and out of order. I learned my lesson to do a backup more frequently! Thanks for your help. If I would want to update to PSE 9 is it compatible with windows XP?

  • How do I restrore iTunes content after hard drive crash?

  • Syncing iPhone with Outlook 2007 after hard drive crash.

I recently had a hard drive crash.  We were able to retrieve the .pst files for Outlook 2007 and I sync my iPhone with Outlook for contacts, calendar and such for business.  The iPhone of course, was not affected.  I downloaded iTunes on the new hard drive, and backed up the phone.  (I sync music and apps on my husband's laptop.)
Now, in trying to sync, though, I get a lot of nebulous messages that really don't explain what the outcome will be.
    Box says:
The information on the iPhone "Susan's iPhone" is synced with another user account.  Do you want to sync this iPhone with the information from this user account instead?
(Choices:  "Merge Info mergest th einformation on this iPhone with the information from this user account.  OR "Replace Info" replaces the information on this iPhone with the information from this user account.  )
My best guess would be 'Merge info" but then, will I end up with double everything?  I have many hundreds of contacts and years of calendars.
It seems with Apple I'm always cleaning up one mess after another.  Today when installing iTunes, it corrupted my Outlook and I had to repair Outlook. So it would be a nightmare to have double of everything on my phone and on my computer.
Does anyone have a clue as to what to expect?

On a PC with Windows or with Paralels iTunes 8.2 has an option for Outlook which works with Outlook 2003 and Outlook 2007 (if it works - see my post on a case where it doesn't ...)

  • Cannot sync iPod after hard drive crash

Hard drive crashed last week so reinstalled new from Dell. Data all backed up. Since new drive in cannot sync iPod. USB cable OK, iTunes "sees" iPod name and can download to iTunes but no sync. Do not get any kind of error msg that iPod registered on "another" computer (which it was). Still under warranty.

Try restoring the iPod in itunes. This should assure that it sync with the current computer it's hooked up to.

  • Any way to get music from ipod back into library after hard drive crash?

I just survived and am recovering from a hard drive crash. For some reason, on my backup, I only retained about 500 of my 2500 songs in my library. All of my music is intact on the ipod however. Is there any way at all to resolve this issue and get the music from the ipod into the libary, or in the alternative, any way to back up the stuff on the ipod? Thanks.

Connect your iPod to your computer. If it is set to update automatically you'll get a message that it is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press "Cancel". Pressing "Erase and Sync" will irretrievably remove all the songs from your iPod. When your iPod appears in the iTunes source list change the update setting to manual, that will let you use our iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button. Also when using most of the utilities listed below your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default: Managing content manually on iPod and iPhone
Once you are safely connected there are a few things you can do to restore your iTunes from the iPod. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Comparison of iPod managers
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    SharePod Windows Only
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    Floola Mac & Windows
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible - Windows version only)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • After hard drive crash I needed to authorise my pc again. itunes tells me iphone cannot sync as pc not authorised. when I try to authorise the pc, itunes tells me pc is already authorised... what can i do?

After a recent hard drive crash I needed to authorise my pc again. I first de-authorised all previous computers (there was no other option)
Then I authorised the pc with the new hard drive.
    then I tried to sync
Then itunes tells me iphone cannot sync as pc not authorised.
when I try to authorise the pc, itunes tells me pc is already authorised...
I have been playing this game 10 times now ... "cannot sync because pc not authorised" and then "cannot authorise as already authorised"
    what can i do?
    thanks

yes, a few times. the number of authorised computers decreases and increases from zero to one and vice versa accordingly. yet I am still being told that it cannot sync.

  • Recovering backed up iPhoto contents after hard drive crash

Our hard drive crashed two weeks ago, but we had used apple's Backup program, to back up everything on our external hard drive. Now we have the new hard drive installed, and I tried to recover our iPhoto library. When I opened up iPhoto for the first time, it said that I needed to upgrade, so I did. Now, I can see all of my original albums listed, but when all that appears in the right window is a square with a dotted line along it. When I double click that frame, I get a black box with an exclamation point in in.
In trying to restore things, I dragged the folders from my house icon on the external hard drive, into the new house icon. For example, I dragged our Pictures file into the new house icon, and apparently replaced the one that was there.
Please help. It will be tragic if we can't recover our photos.

Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    Regards
    TD
