Restoring ITunes Music from a backup copy on a external Drive

HI My Computer crashed I had to reinstall Windows I back-up my itunes music onto a external Hard driveb 30 gigs worth. I just copied the itunes music to a external drive. How can I restore all that music? I Downloaed Itunes and have a empty libary

A clean install of iTunes on a clean install of Windows knows nothing of your former library. If you backed up your entire iTunes folder then you can either connect to it on the external drive (hold down shift when starting iTunes), or restore (i.e. copy) the backup folder to the Music folder in your new profile so that you have a working library and a backup.
If you didn't backup your iTunes database then you will have to import the media into a new empty library and rebuild any playlists you want.

I think I've fixed this on my machine. If you look in the ITunes folder there is a subfolder called Previous iTunes Libraries. In my case for some reason this contained the one which had always worked and a new one was in the main folder. I closed iTunes, deleted the new one, and moved the old one back to the main folder, then opened iTunes. It then rebuilt the library and it plays correctly. Hope it works for you.

Time Capsule is for backing up your data. It's not really a solution for live file storage; using it will not reduce the bloat of your boot volume.
If you have a lot of movies, music, etc. in your iTunes Library, that can be a good thing to move to an external drive. Here's how:

After you follow those instructions to copy your media over to the external drive and point iTunes to it, you can delete it from your internal drive.

My problem is that I would like to get all the music into one library, delete the duplicates, then have the external drive store all the music. Is there a practical way to do this? This way I can set up my devices so that they all have the same music and playlists. Is this the best way to handle this situation?

The cheap and easy way is to just add all the media files as new items to a new library configured to store all on the external drive (start iTunes with the option key held down and tell it to create a new library on the external). There won't be any automated way to prevent duplicates. You're doing manual spring cleaning. Of course if you add all the items as new items you will lose things such as playlists, date added, last played, etc.

Can I Sync My Music From My Macbook Pro To An External Drive

I have a MacBook Pro, which has all of my music stored on its hard drive and I play this through iTunes and sync with my iPod.
I am looking for a simple way of synchronizing this with an external hard drive I have so my music is kept up to date and should I add any music to my MacBook it will automatically update the external drive and hopefully this will provide back up in case anything happens.

There really is only one way to do this but it's not automatic in the sense you are thinking. Use a utility for syncing folders or any good backup utility such as:

6. Tri-Backup

Configure the utility to sync (not backup) the two folders. Then set up a schedule for the sync to occur on a regular basis.

Moving my iTunes library from on PC to another w/ external drive

I am trying to get my complete iTunes library from my old computer onto my new one, complete with all my information from each song (play counts, last played, ratings, etc.). I keep my entire library resides on my external drive.
So my question is how do import my library off the external drive to iTunes on my new PC? I tried exporting my library on the old PC to an XML file but the new PC wouldn't load any of my music.

When you copied your music did you copy the whole iTunes folder including the iTunes Music folder and the library files? If you did then copy the whole folder to to the default position on your new computer, in Vista this is C:\Username\Music\. Once you have copied everything over hold down the Shift key in Windows when opening iTunes. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to an existing one. Let's try swapping out your QuickTime again, taking a few extra explicit precautions this time.
Head into your Add/Remove programs. uninstall QuickTime.
Next, we’ll manually remove any leftover program files and folders.
1. On the Start menu, click My Computer (or double-click My Computer on the Desktop).
2. In My Computer, open Local Disk.
3. Open Program Files.
4. Right-click on the QuickTime folder and click Delete from the shortcut menu.
5. Navigate to C:\Windows\system32\.
6. Remove the files QuickTime.qts and QuicktimeVR.qtx. (If “Hide filename extensions for known file types” is enabled on the PC, then those two files will appear as “QuickTime” and QuickTimeVR”.)

Latest Quicktime Installers … get the one that doesn’t mention iTunes

How do I restore iTunes library from Backup files on External Hard Drive and keep the new iTunes library on the External Hard Drive. I have all the media and playlist and .xml .itl files, just want the iTunes to recognise the content.
I backedup my iTunes content by dragging to External Hard Drive. Formatted and reinstalled OS. My iTunes content is so large, that I wish for the Library and content to remain on the External Hard Drive. I have all the music files and playlists, I just cannot get the iTunes application to display all the content. Hoping to Not have to drag and drop all the content to be recopied into new iTunes organised files.
Troubleshooting this by researching other conversations on the web, I have come stuck for a solution. One Troubleshoot told me to hold down the Command key and then lauch iTunes and a dialogue box will appear to Choose a new library, however when I try this, no Dialogue box appear to give me the option!?

It sometimes has that funny switch symbol on it too.

If you copied your entire iTunes folder onto the flash drive, just copy it back to the appropriate place on the computer.
If you copied individual folders or files, add them back to iTunes by inserting the flash drive in your computer, and then dragging the files into your "Automatically Add to iTunes" folder.
The first method recreates your library as it was, with all playcounts, playlists, etc. The second method builds a new library with the same content.

I have tried to restore my contacts and company data at least 20 times and every time half way through THE iPAD REBOOTS! When it boots back up it is at the brand new iPad screen.

Yes! I have done everything. Rebooted computer, checked for updates, Hard booted iPad, Factory restored iPad to ios 5 twice, tried every usb port I have, unplugged all other usb components.
Everytime half way through "Restoring iPad from backup..." The iPad turns off shows a spinning circle then shows the Apple logo and takes me to the brand new iPad setup screen.

Check the console app to see if there are any error messages. I had one app showing an issue (Pet Hotel) the error was (truncated):

I manually snyc'ed that particular app and then re-ran the restore and am now the proud owner of a working iphone. Not sure it is the same problem or app but looking in the console was the key!

Then your iTunes must be looking at the removable disc, not your hard drive. Did you actually copy the songs onto your computer, or simply tell iTunes to look at the removable drive?
Highlight a song and click on File/Get Info/Summary>Where and check the location that iTunes has listed for the song. What does it say?
