Restoring only certain files after reinstall

Hi Everyone,
I want to do a fresh install of Mavericks on my Mac Mini because it's become bloated with a bunch of work stuff and is super slow. I don't need any of the stuff in my own profile as it's now all on my MBP. When I do the restore from Time Machine I just want to restore my wife's profile and only her iTunes and iPhoto libraries - the rest can be trashed.
Is there a way to just chose certain applications and folders to be restored? Or do I need to clean up everything first, back up and then reinstall Mavericks and restore from the new backup?
Cheers,
Adam

I think so. See if this helps:

  • How to only restore only certain elements after reinstall

    Hi guys
Quick question. My macbook is reeeeally tired, so I've decided to give it a complete reinstall of Snow Leopard. However, I am confused how I should proceed without loosing some vital things.
    Here's the thing!
I have a complete timemachine backup of my machine but I do not wish to simply restore this entire image. I want a reinstall completely (to get rid of whatever is making my computer slow) and then just pull certain elements from timemachine to the newly installed and fresh OS.
I this possible? (1) reinstall (2) hook my timemachine drive to the computer (3) selected e.g. apps, musik, docs etc. to restore (i.e. restoring vital elements without getting the bugs back)
I have tried looking everywhere for this, so it would be for great help if anybody can answer!
    thanks

That's much more complex that you may think, and is probably overkill anyway.
Reinstalling apps selectively can be done, but won't work well for complex ones -- if an app comes with it's own Installer, it almost certainly puts other files in other places, in addition to putting the app in your Applications folder. If you don't know what and where all those other files are, and restore them, too, the app probably won't work well, if at all.
It's usually much better (and safer) to address the problem(s) directly.

  • How to restore only certain files

i did an erase and install (hopefully to remove a problem that we and the apple store genius have ben unable to find. . i did not yet use time machine to migrate all files to the macbook because i want to migrate only certain files.  how do i migrate only some files selectively, and not all of them as would happen in doing a complete restore ?

Yes. You'll need to use the TM "Star Wars" interface to locate the files and restore.

  • Restore only certain files from time machine

I have a macbook pro. I have had issues with my mac with constant spinning beach ball for months now and then it crashed completely.. Turns out to be a software issue and have had hard drive reset and OSX reinstalled. I can't remember exact time problem started, so do not want to just restore from time machine incase i reinstall the issue.
Is it possible to select files separately from time machine?
    Thanks

Yes.  You may find this link useful:

  • After back up, can i choose only certain files to restore?

I am currently backing up my entire Macbook so i can reinstall Leopard. I was wondering after the reinstallation of Leopard if i can be able to choose only certain files like my music, pictures, ETC? Because i would like to start to use the root account.

As Duane has mentioned, you will be able to access Time Machine backups from your computer by setting Time Machine up again and choosing your Time Capsule as the backup disk. You will need your TC disk password as well.
I think I recall a user who said he could not access his backups after reinstalling the operating system on his machine. He couldn't remember the TC password and...he could not go back into KeyChain Access to try to retrieve his password because the application had been reinstalled, erasing the old stored data. Keep your TC password in a safe place as you will not be able to access the TC without it.
In the event that you are having difficulty with restoring Time Machine backups, you also have the ability to use Migration Assistant to move files back from the TC to your computer. You will need your TC password to do this as well. You won't be able to selectively choose just the files you want to move, but you can always go back into your hard drive and delete the files that you don't want or need.

Cant open Keynote file after reinstall Keynote.
    File there: https://yadi.sk/d/Alxao3sydmdLQ
What the problem? Who can help me?

Tested your file and it is corrupt.
My only suggestion is to find a backup copy of the file as Keynote files have the reputation of being unrecoverable once they become corrupt.

  • Premiere Pro CS5 crashing when exporting (only certain file types)

    Hi
I have found that when I try and export media in Premiere Pro CS5, it often crashes during the export. It says
It's only certain file types. For instance, Vimeo HD seems okay but Vimeo SD always crashes mid-export. MPEG is okay too, but MPEG2-DVD always crashes.
Sometimes it says this: "Error Compiling Movie - Unknown Error" but doesn't throw me out of Premiere altogether.
Other times it crashes altogether and Windows gives me this error message: "Display driver NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 258.96 stopped responding and has successfully recovered". Premiere Pro then stops responding so I have to re-open it and start exporting again.
I have checked there are no gaps in my timeline and I have rendered the whole work area. Besides, I doubt it's anything that I'm doing wrong with the project itself because it's exporting fine in some formats.
I am also experiencing random crashes when editing too. Not that often, but occasionally it throws me out - and twice it has made the whole screen go crazy, with weird dotting across the screen (it's scary, it looks like the monitor itself has broken!).
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Nick
PS I have a pretty decent new PC - Dell Studio XPS, 8GB, 2x1TB drives, etc. Premiere itself is working great, except for these crashes.

Some drivers do not work well in some systems... so go to nVidia and try a different (usually newer) driver for your card
These notes are for Encore, but they MAY also work in Premiere

  • Want to restore only specific items after erasing iPhone4

I have read several questions and answers but I have a particular problem I am trying to fix on an iPhone4 and doing an backup, full erase and restore returned the problem to the same state.
    To summarize:
    What the problem is:
iPhone 4 now with iOS 7.1.1. I was in another country, updated to iOS 7.1.1, and began having problems with Facebook malfunctioning...repeatedly 'crashing' by dropping Facebook back to the 'desktop' as an open task. Re-opening Facebook every time it goes to Notifications and reloads data again...basically unusable.
    What I've done:
    1) Removed Facebook & Facebook Messenger apps. Reinstalled both, no change. Removed both, reinstalled FB only, no change.
    2) I tried a backup (I am not sure if it was iCloud only or also iTunes), erased the phone setting and contents, then restored everything...same problem.
I let the restore process talk me into creating a Restrictions Passcode but apparently I typed it wrong. I figured out how to erase it all again through iCloud.com
    3) I concluded something in the backup contains the problem. I installed Facebook only from the app store, no restore of anything else yet. Seems to work fine today.
What I wish to accomplish next:
I want to know if I can restore only the things I want, like contacts, and photos, not a full restore. I'll reload apps one at a time to see if one 'breaks' the FB functionality again.
    Thank you
    Murray
In addition to a full backup, I exported photos and videos manually to my PC (Windows XP). I haven't figured out a way to transfer files to an iPhone like a flash drive (I'm a PC person - that would be a normal thing for me).
So after all that, the question is: Can I restore only items (contacts, photos, maybe music, in that order of importance) I want after erasing everything?

It is all or nothing in a restore from backup.
Restore as new, then sync your contacts, etc from your computer to your iphone.

  • Restore programs and files after a restore to facory settings

When I suspected my hard drive was failing I tried recovery to factory settings, and when asked if I wanted a backup I agreed and after many hours, a backup was made and a restore to factory settings was done. I recovered the backup to my desktop, but before I move each of the folders to their rightful place (wherever that is) I wonder if an old windows image I have would be better to use? Will it restore programs without having to reinstall the. And restore my files to where they belong rather than on my desktop?
    This question was solved.

The windows backup image is not very flexible nor trustworthy from within the trade.
More knowledgeable users, as well as myself, use Macrium Free to perform Image Backups on a regular basis:

The only problem with the free version is that you cannot backup individual files but you can with the paid version.
Suggest you check it out.  It is easy to use and very reliable.  It has saved me on a number of occasions.

  • Can't open PSD file after reinstall windows 7 64 bit

After reinstalling windows 7 stopped opening some files PSD files. I try to open them with Photoshop version 6, it does not work. I tried to open them on the laptop, same garbage. Tell me what the problem is. And how to fix it.
    Thank you.

Perhaps these files were corrupted. I can not say how it happened, but it is quite possible. And the files are no longer open, immediately after reinstalling windows? Or not?
If so, it is quite rare in my opinion. You are very unlucky. Try reinstalling photoshop. Then check these files were opened or not. If not. Then the only option is a special software. I would use on your site this program
    http://www.photoshop.recoverytoolbox.com/
(it is not free but is very good and is not expensive. But in the future you will immune from such situations. )

  • Can you restore only the files that have recently changed with Time Machine?

    Greetings,
Before i ask my question,  i'll give a bit of background as to my issue.
I was editing my $PATH within the ~/.bash_profile file and accidently overwrote my $PATH. So now simple terminal commands such as open or 'ls' no longer work. In order to edit the file, I need to change the defaults to allow me to see hidden files, but I can't do that because the defaults command stopped working after I screwed up the $PATH. Also, I used the echo commadn to verify that the previous $PATH no longer exists. The environment variable now just points to an empty folder I accidently set it to in TextEdit.
So, I have Time Machine running, and it backs up to a Time Capsule. I have the hourly backups that I can restore to, but when I start the restore, it crawled up towards 200,000 files before I finally decided that wasn't right and decided to post a question (it's still "preparing to copy"). I had to select the OS X Volume to restore from my one hour old backup, since I can't restore the folder the bash_profile exists within (it is hidden) or so I assumed.\
Now my question, it seems that Time Machine is doing a full restore of every file in the backup and not just the files it incrementally changed between its hourly backups. Why does it do this? My restore process should have just been a couple of minutes, restoring a couple hundred or so files at most. Restoring several hundred thousand files seems stupid when the I select a backup that is one hour old. Is there anyway to set it up so I can restore incrementally?
    Thanks,
    Johnathon.

A quick note, I performed the restore from within the Time Machine while booted into OS X; the restore did not take place in the special bootup tool available. Why it does not provide an option to simply restore the files changed over the last hour is mind boggling to me

You are making this way too complicated. In Terminal, choose Shell > New Command…. In the text box that opens, enter bash --noprofile . A Terminal window will open that does not use your .bash_profile, so the bad $PATH will not be an issue. Now you can remove, move, or edit .bash_profile.

  • Can not restore all data/files after disk crash.

I have a intel MacBook Pro (2008). Hard drive crashed. I replaced the drive and all is well with that. I re-installed Leopard and the Snow Leopard upgrade. Now I am trying to restore all my files/data from my external LaCie drive. All I am seeing is it says "copying to volumes". I don't see the files or anything on my new drive. What am I doing wrong??

  • How can I sync only certain apps after a restore instead of all of them?

I've been serisouly frustrated with iTunes trying to find a way to sync only the apps I want to sync. But iTunes insists that I sync every single app I have downloaded in the past to my phone and I don't want all of them on there. Now after restoring I have a bunch of apps on my phone waiting to sync and now have to either restore again or individually delete all 155 of them. Are there certain settings I'm missing here?  Please help!!

Thanks for the help I did not receive
    Hey, glad I didn't help.
I mean, you waited a whole 38 minutes for someone to volunteer their assistance.
    FYI:
    Select the iPhone in iTunes.
    Click the Apps tab.
Click Sync apps and tick the apps you want to sync.
    Click Apply at bottom.
    You're welcome.
    After literally digging for forever.
Something less than 38 minutes is forever? (time it took to post first question, find answer, get upset and post 2nd time).
Oh, and thanks for posting how you resolved the issue so others (who may not get an immediate reply) will know how to solve a similar issue without getting upset.

  • Unable to open RAW files after reinstalling Photoshop CS4

I recently did a system recovery to my computer due to downgrading to Windows 7; however, after I installed Design Premium back to my PC, I am not able to open RAW files in Photoshop. It prompted "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document." I tried to check for Photoshop updates but no updates are available. I tried re-installing Design Premium but the issue still persists.
My system configuration is as follows:
Windows 7 Professional x64 (Yet to install Service Pack 1, but I don't think that really matters)
Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design Premium (Photoshop Version 11.0)
Canon EOS 50D (Firmware Version 1.08)
Anyone may have a clue on how to fix that? Thanks a lot!
    Screenshot as follows:

When you reinstalled CS4, you  went back to the original release.
Now you must apply all the updates to Photoshop and to  Adobe Camera Raw manually.
You cannot rely on the Adobe auto updater to tell you that you are up to date.  That updater was broken for years and years, and that was and is certainly the case with CS4.
Adobe didn't get their updater act together until CS6.
You also have to update the ACR plug-in manually.
