Restoring original Blueberry iBook G3 with Mac OS 8.6

I recently got a Blueberry iBook G3 and need help restoring it. It has all original documentation and CDs. It has 160 MB of RAM and a 3 GB hard drive. It doesn't have an AirPort card. When I try to restore it it boots and loads to a preloaded desktop (on CD) and then shuts down without giving me any messages or options. I want to install the original software and then upgrade to Mac OS X.

I don't have another battery or a charger (only one). Anyway, it works with Mac OS X (i installed it and it worked), but I want the original software on it. Also, the logicboard is working correctly

I am currently using Firefox Version 1.5.0.12 on my iBook G4 with Mac OS X Version 10.3.9. I have problems using Facebook. I cannot confirm friend requests or view messages in the inbox for instance. What can I do?

Firefox 2.0.0.20 is the last ever release for Mac OSX 10.3.9 and earlier versions, but that may not work any better because some large websites are blocking those older browsers or dropping support for older browsers like IE6 & earlier, and Firefox 2 & earlier due to security issues.
Using Safari on those websites ''(not enough total users for websites to be concerned about)'', or installing a new version of MacOSX are two solutions; or getting a new computer.

  • Updating original Blueberry iBook to OS X?

I'd like to update my Blueberry iBook from OS 9 to OS X. Which version can I update to (10.1, 10.2, 10.3, 10.4)? The later versions of the OS only come in disc DVD, which this iBook can't play, only CD-drive. Any ideas? What about any other things I need to update my Mac to OS X?

    Hello Juan
I've taken a stock, original Tangerine iBook up to OS X (10.3.9). Here is my advice, based on that experience:
    1. Check to see that you have the latest firmware. Here is a link for that info:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
The latest version of firmware for the original iBooks is 4.1.7
    2. Add some RAM. I have a 256MB module in mine, and it works fine. If you have 160MB, you may be able to install OS X, but it will be dirt-slow. (I've had OS X load in as little as 64MB, but it was so slow it was unusable.) 256MB is fine for daily use (e-mail, web surfing, etc).
    3. Depending on what you will do with your OS X powered iBook, a hard drive upgrade is highly recommended. I have run OS X (10.3.9) on the original hard drive, but I had to install nothing but the bare system (no foreign languages, no printers, no extra software). That kind of install is basically limited to checking e-mail and some web browsing. I later swapped out the original 3GB drive for a 20GB unit. Beware: swapping out the hard drive in one of these iBooks is a fairly lengthy process. There are about a zillion little screws and things to keep track of. If you are comfortable with a screwdriver and being around electronics, go for it - if not, a shop would be happy to do it for you. For a look at the tear-down instructions follow this link:
    http://www.pbfixit.com/Guide/49.0.0.html
And decide for yourself if you want to tackle the job.
    4. You need OS X install CDs. The latest version of OS X that will run on your iBook (once you get the hardware up to spec) is Panther (10.3). I would not suggest any version earlier than Jaguar (10.2), which will also run quite well on your machine. You can get the CDs on eBay (as has been suggested) or from online retailers such as
    http://www.hardcoremac.com/
Note: make sure you get retail CDs - NOT CDs that cam with a particular computer - retail CDs can be installed on any machine, while others are machine-specific
That's about all I can think of for now. Good luck!
    Richard

They need the software to run, all right, but many do work with Macs.
    http://logitech-en-amr.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/20730/~/logitech-web cam-software-v2.x-for-mac-release-notes
But whether it will work with an older PowerPC-based Mac depends on which model the webcam is. Newer ones require a newer Mac.
Unless you have a newer Mac mini, you're not likely to need a webcam because newer Macs (MacBooks and iMacs) have built-in webcams.

  • IBook G3 with Mac Mini

I have a iBook G3 10.4.10; 800 MHz PowerPC; 640 MB SDRAM. I want to get a faster Mac Mini and hook it to my G3 and use the G3 as the monitor; therefore I dont have to buy a new monitor for the Mac mini. However what processor speed will be used? I will be only using th G3 as a monitor but it will be turned on while in use. While the Mac mini will be plugged into it. The bottom line is will I get a color wheel while performing simple functions on my mini while it is plugged into my G3.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It's possible to use your iBook to control a Mac mini, but you'd need to use something like VNC - with the iBook running as the 'host' and mini running as 'client'. The mini would then show up as a window on the iBook screen, but it's doubtful that performance would be particularly great for anything but fairly basic work, and certainly not up to the power of the mini itself. The mini would run at it's normal speed of course, but the performance you'd see would be governed by how quickly the iBook could handle network data and refresh window content. Disabling all unnecessary processes in the iBook would help a little, but whether you'd find it acceptable depends on what you were trying to do.
I would look for an inexpensive display - possibly even a CRT type if funds are limited - and use the mini as a stand alone system for best performance and least complicated solution!

  • I have iBook G4 with Mac 10.4.11 and I received a note: Your version of firefox is no longer protected against online attacs. What do I do?

what version of firefox can I use?

What that message is referring to is one of the safer browsing features no longer working in older versions of Firefox. Firefox has a feature to warn you if a site you are trying to access is a suspected phishing site/web forgery or contains malware. It does this by checking with a database maintained by Google of suspect sites, and if the site is in the Google database it warns you before you access the site. The database used by Firefox 3.0 and earlier has been discontinued so you will no longer get any warnings. Firefox 3.5 and later use a new database of suspect sites.

  • So I have a iBook G4 with Mac OS 10.3.9....I can't sync.

I just bought the new iPod classic, and upon connecting it to my computer it says it requires at least 10.4.8.
Am I correct in assuming that I need to BUY either Tiger or Leopard for it to work?

    Yes, you're correct.

  • Blueberry ibook RAM & Apple docs

I also have an original blueberry ibook and would like to upgrade the RAM. However, there seems to be two conflicting pieces of information on Apple's web site:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14870
The first listing for an ibook (about half way down the page) says PC66 up to 288MB.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302333
The listing for the original ibook (at the bottom of the page says this model can also use PC100 memory, such as M9089G/A - 512MB
I have read some of the other postings which suggest the first doc is incorrect and that it will take 512MB. Please help and confirm.
Having upgraded the RAM I intend to also upgrade from Mac OS 9.2.2 to 10.3.9. Does anyone know if the 366MHz processor will handle this?
    Thank you

You can find the firmware version by running Apple System Profiler and looking in the ROM field (I believe that is the name I haven't used OS 9 in a long time).
PC100 will operate at 66 MHz which is the clock speed of the iBook. Therefore you can use PC100.
A lot of PC133 will also operate at 66 MHz. Therefore you can use PC133. But some PC133 devices will not operate at 66 MHz. That is why you need to buy the RAM from someone who offers a lifetime warranty.

  • Share DVD-RW with mac os x server 10.4.7

    Hello,
i've an iBook G3 with Mac OS X Server 10.4.7 installed and a LaCie DVD-RW attached. Is it possible to share and mount the DVD drive through internet and burn data that i've on a PowerBook G4 connected to the same network, with Toast or iTunes?
    thank you
PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   the last one PowerBook, 1 Go RAM

    Hi
Personally I do not have mush experience with netboot
The 10.4.7 DVD you purchased is possibly the Intel version of OS X Server?
I would run the combo updater to bring your 10.4.0 version up to the latest and then see if netboot works
You can download the updater from here-
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxserver10410comboupdateuniversal.htm l
    Edit-
Whoops you will need the 10.4.7 combo update first before using the above updater, get it here-
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosxserverupdate1047combo.html

  • Is iBook G4 Mac OS 10.4 compatible with Mac OS 10.5?

I have recently purchased second hand iBook G4 with the operating system 10.4. All files have been removed by its previous user the only thing is every time I put the machine on it asks for his ID and password. So I thought that I could get rid off this annoying thing by running the install disc. But I don't have the version 10.4. However I also have Mac machine at home with 10.5 operating system. So the question is: can I use 10.5 install disc on the iBook G4 that originally had the version 10.4?
    Thanks for your help

These are the minimum system requiremnts for running 10.5
Processor must be any Intel, PowerPC G5 or G4 (867 MHz and faster)
DVD drive (for installation of the operating system)
At least 512 MB of RAM (additional RAM (1 GB) is recommended for development purposes)
At least 9 GB of disk space available.
However 10.5 may be slow on your G4 if the CPU is less than 1 GigHz and if RAM is less than 1 GB.
But you could probably run 10.5 on it.
Is the problem with the existing 10.4 is that you cannot log in, because you don't know the username and password and don't have the 10.4 install disk to change it? You can get around this if necessary.

  • Restoring original adjustments of a Mac Book Pro 13 last model

    Good morning
I just bought a Mac Book pro 13 (last model) and I tried to use assistant migration to migrate everything from my old Mac Book (OS X LIon and updated), by ethernet connexion by cable, but the operation avorted twice. No interesting solution for the moment from the Apple Care telephone ahelp. They seem as bewildered as me.
I am looking for a solution in my old Mac, but  before going in the Old Mac to see what's going wrong (I had done, though, the necessary adjustment, like deactivation of all applications opening automatically, never deactivate hard drive, unlink my computer to Dropbox etc..) I want to  restore my new Mac Book Pro with its original features (without any trace of the precedent operation, or user accounts etc..)
SO: Is it better to format hard disk and restore original adjustments (as if I had just open the computer) or to use in Disk utilities the command "Reinstall Mac OS X and its application"?
I should think it is the first solution but I liked an advise from more clever folks than me.
    Secondary question:
Could the problem be because my new Mac Pro had been configured in the Apple Store with the same user account than the one on my old Mac (and same Apple ID)?
    Or is there other possibilities?
Thanks for your Help. I would'nt like to go the Apple Store and have it done for me, and die an idiot. (french expression)
    Cathy

Doing a Clean re-install of Lion would not hurt as yes the failed MA may have placed certain thing on the system before it finally failed, I wouldn't know about that.
If you chose to do that look into creating a Lion Install USB thumb drive so you never have to download the Lion install files again and so you won't need a internet connection to re-install Lion.
IMHO it really isn't a time eater. IMHO it is the only way to have New computer without all the JUNK you have collected on the old one transfered over. It is the only way I setup a NEW computer. Buy the computer, Windows or Mac, Wipe the drive and reinstall the OS CLEAN. Install the programs I want on the new computer and then copy my personal files over.
Now there will be other opinions on this. Some of the Apple Fan Boys will state that OS X is so great that it never needs cleaning or a reinstall. That has not been my experience over the years of working on other peoples Macs.

  • Will OS X work with blueberry ibook ?

If my blueberry ibook only has 33 mhz, can it be rtamped up to work with OS X?I am using system 9.2 with 320 mg of memory built in

    Piet-
I just did a clean install on a blue clamshell ibook-I installed OS 10.3.7 and it used all the HD space. I dumped garage band and some other apps and now freed up 3 g of space, but how can I do a custom install and get the OS down to 1.4g like you mentioned? Or...can I go back now and dump other things to clear space? (I will run delocalizer).
    This is a 466mhz with 128 ram.

I am using an old ibook G4 ppc with mac os x 10.4.11. A day before by default I delete one file and I think it was the startup file of os because after that when I restarted my notebook it's not running the OS only that blue screen is there. This notebook was a gift for me and still it is so close to my heart. I don't wana loose it. Please, help me out.

Without the install CD, you are hosed.
    What happened to it?
It is possible to call AppleCare and order a replacement. They will charge you a nominal fee for shipping and handling.

  • Hi, I have a Mac iBook PowerPC G4 1.33 GHz with Mac OSX 10.4.11.

Hi, I have a Mac iBook PowerPC G4 1.33 GHz with Mac OSX 10.4.11.
I would like to connect an 20" Apple Cinema Display with ADC connection to it, but it seems impossible because the cord on the Cinema Display doesn't fit the Display port on the iBook G4!
May anybody suggest how to solve the problem?
Is the 20" Apple Display (aluminium enclosure) compatible with my iBook G4 Display port?
    Thanks.

    Thanks for your replay, Cornelius.
    Can you be more specific?
    Where the Display Forum is?
    I can't find it.
My question was: Is the Aluminium 20" Apple Display" (not the ADC Apple Cinema Display) compatible with the iBook G4 Display port?
I know for sure that the Apple ADC-DVI adapter can not be used to connect a Cinema Display to my iBook G4 port.
    Please help.
    Thanks.
