Retina Macbook Pro Fans

I have an early 2013 15" Retina MBP.
It's actually the second one I've had, the first had ghosting issues, which eventually led to the machine being replaced.
When I'm using Skype and sharing my screen, the fans go crazy. Earlier they got up to 6,000RPM. I don't know whether this is normal or not, but I don't remember the old one or my Macbook Air doing the same.
The fans also go slightly crazy when watching videos on Youtube etc.
I've attached a screenshot of the stats, although it was taken a minute or so after I'd finished with my client and the fans had slowed a little.
Based on the temprature of my machine, is the fan speed normal?
Is this kind of activity normal?
The end of the power adapter that plugs in to my Macbook also gets baking hot. As though it's been under a flame!
Thanks

Still struggling with this. Everything is up to date. Not tried any resets as of yet.
My CPU are getting over 80oC just watching a Youtube video and the fans are up to 6,000rpm, this cannot be healthy?

  • Retina MacBook Pro fan very loud and usb mouse disconnecting when restarting the computer

2 days ago, I got a brand new retina MacBook Pro 13 inch with the specs 2.8 GhZ i7, 8 gigs of ram and 512gb ssd. It should definitely be functioning properly since it's a really expensive computer, but I already noticed a few problems that I hope you can  help me with.
So first of all, when I play World of Warcraft, the fan seems to go up to 6000rpm and is very loud. I checked the activity monitor and it says WoW is using about 60% CPU, so it shouldn't have to be that loud. I also installed smcfancontrol, but it doesn't seem to lower the speed of the fan.
I ran an apple diagnostics test and it couldn't find any problems, and I also tried resetting my smc, but the fan is still going very loud.
And the second problem I have is, that when I have my mouse usb connected to my Mac, and I restart it, it can't detect the mouse anymore. So I'd have to pull out the usb plug and put it back in everytime I turn on my computer. isn't it supposed to automatically connect to my mouse when it's already plugged in?

    Matt,
Try reading this, then go to the section on Resetting the SMC for a Macbook Pro with a battery you should not remove.

  • Retina MacBook Pro fan issue

I've noticed when playing games or doing anything graphic intensive, only 1 fan goes on? as far as I know the RMBP 13 inch has a left and right fan but I only ever hear the right fan. I downloaded "macs fan control" and only my right fan shows up there. Is this an issue that needs resolved?

Thankyou! I had asked an apple "expert" and they told me the device was defected. Obviously they need to some more research on their own products. again thanks
In your case, this is the definitive place to find out about your specific MBP and all of its internal components.

  • Heat and Fan on Retina MacBook Pro

    Hi Guys,
This is my first post in the forums and I just wanted some advice on an issue. I know there are existing discussions - but I've read conflicting answers in each. I'd like to know if the fan and heat I'm experience on my brand new 15 inch mid-2014 Retina MacBook Pro is normal.
I use Adobe Premiere Pro CC to edit 1080p video for a YouTube channel. I've noticed that after I begin exporting the fans kick in within seconds and the heat jumps up substantially. Idle, the temperature I've measured with SMC fan control is roughly 35-40 degrees, but within a minute of exporting - this jumps up to around 98/99 degrees. I understand that the fans would start after a certain amount of time and that the temperature would rise. But is it normal to rise to 99 degrees????
I've not noticed this with games, but just when exporting.
    Thanks for any help.

That screen shot is very helpful. You have a four core CPU and each core can handle two threads so the %CPU can be over 100%. In your case, it's over 700% total usage with 800% being all there is available, so your rMBP is working very hard indeed. While I start cranking up the fan speed using smcFanControl just as you are, there's just so much the fans can do given that load. And we don't know how hard the graphics coprocessor is working, and that just adds more heat. I suspect the lower temperature may be because the intake ports may have been partially blocked on your lap; it really doesn't take much given their location. It looks like your laptop is doing the best it can.
There's a reason why five large fans were used in the Mac Pro towers (not counting the graphics card fan).

  • Retina Macbook Pro strange fan noise

Hi all, i just got my retina macbook pro 2 days ago, however when starting it up for the first time there was a strange noise coming from the computer (probably fans), it was like a blocked fan kicking in loudly but only for a few seconds. I figured that it was nothing but it came back when i used it today and i noticed that this sound is only present when the computer is warm. It only comes for a few seconds and then fades away, is this normal? I'll try to post a recording up here if i can.

I have the same problem with my MacBook Pro Retina . . . took it into my local Genius Bar, where a nice woman identified it as noise from one (or both?) of the fans. She took it apart, removed some debris (couldn't have been much, after a couple of months) and . . .  the computer continues to make this annoying noise.
I believe this must be a serious design flaw on Apple's part, and that they don't know what to do about it.
We can hope that the noise is merely annoying, and not a danger sign.

  • Looking for a Hard Case/Shell for my new Retina MacBook Pro 15"?

I am looking to buy a shell/case for my rMBP (October 2013) it hasn't arrived yet, but obviously I want it to be protected asap.
I don't know what the model number is, but it is the lower spec 15" Retina MacBook Pro that I have purchased. How can I make sure that a case I buy will fit?
Will any 15" rMBP case fit, or has the size changed for this upgrade?
I am looking for either a black/clear, shell/case that will attach to the back of the lid to protect it. I am looking on eBay at the moment, as I have a voucher to spend on there anyway. Can someone recommend a shop/seller or a particular product?
I am in the UK, so I would obviously prefer to buy from a local seller.
    Thanks!

I purchased the Hardshell Case for 13-inch MacBook. It offers a durable hardcase construction that securely covers your notebook. It provides a frosted hardshell exterior, soft-touch coating, raised rubber feet, thermal vents, and trouble-free access to all features.
    Features
    Excellent notebook protection
    Exterior rubberized soft-touch coating
Precise cut-outs for access to magnetic power cable, headphone and microphone input jacks, CD-ROM drive, battery level check button, and all side ports
Vents and rubber feet elevate notebook from surface, allowing notebook's internal fans to circulate air more freely
Simple to use and easy to clean
I really love it. My friend has dropped their macbook (the case was on) on the concrete and nothing happened to the computer.
    Hope this helps you.

  • OSX 8.2 new Retina Macbook Pro won't wake from sleep.

Since upgrade to OSX 8.2 new Retina Macbook Pro won't wake from sleep. Tablet lights are on in morning and fans running like crazy, but it requires hard quit and start. Tried with no apps running, no change. It was fine before this last update. Wasn't the recent firmware update supposed to fix this issue? It seems to have started one for me.

I have the exact same problem with my Macbook Pro OS 10.8.4. What happens is: I work on the train, press cmd/alt + eject to put to sleep..pop it in my bag...get home or office... open the lid...and nothing! Battery indicator shows I have plenty of juice but it will not wake up no matter what key I press.
The only difference between use on the train and home/office is the plugging in of peripherals and mains power. It happens sparadicially, perhaps once or twice a week and I always send a 'panic report', so somewhere there will be approx 20 reports of this fault at Apple.

  • Replace MacBook Pro fan with asymetrical rMBP fan

Hello, I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro. I was thinking of replacing my current fan with the asymetrical one found in the retina MacBook Pro. I know that the fans have different connections, so I thought of opening the fan case and replacing the blades (putting the asymetrical blades into my current fan case). Do you think this is possible? I know it's a bit of an awkward hack, but the fans get kind of annoying when working with Final Cut.
    Thanks in advance everyone.

Update.  I downloaded a nice free program called "Macs Fan Control" from MacUpdate. It shows me that I have two fans "Left Side" and "Right Side" and they are both running at the minimum RPM; the window shows Min RPMs as 2160 and 2000 (left/right), and the 'current' is 2161/2005 (changes all the time but very close to the minimum). Max RPM shows 5940/5499 (left/right).  "Control" is auto, meaning the program is not trying to control the speed.
I tried setting the minimum below the values above (eg, I tried changing the minimum to 1,500) but it would not let me. I tried setting the minimums above the values shown, and it allowed me. There is obviously a 'safety' feature in the fan program to prevent slowing down the fans to a value below what is considered safe.
I then installed the same program on my MacBook air.  I cannot hear any fan on my MacBook air, but - Macs Fan Control shows a single 'Exhaust' fan running at minimum value of 1200. If I press my ear hard against the bottom of the MacBook air, I can just about hear a faint, faint noise.
So my theory now is - the fans are always running on every MacBook (Air, Pro, etc) - the issue is, how fast they run.  And, it would appear (from my MacBook Air experience) that the fans are generally quiet.
I then used the program to speed up the left side fan; the noise grew significantly and was unpleasant. At 4,000 RPM it was a deep, throaty sound.  I then slowed it back down, and did the same to the right side fan; at 4,000 RPM it was a gentle 'whoosh' sound. SO ... this tells me the left side fan is messed up (bad bearings, etc).  I PRESUME the two fans are the same, and should sound 'similar'.  Would others agree with my assessment?

  • Retina MacBook Pro Heat Issues ?

    Hello,
i have noticed that my new MacBook Pro with Retina Display gets exceptionally hot, especially when playing some fairly basic games like "Tomb Raider Underworld". I have noticed the heat in the area of the Keyboard an the bottom. The aluminum between the keys gets so hot that i can barely touch it.
Has anybody got the same issue ?
    What should i do ?

see Vastly Improved Thermals from AnaandTech as part of their review of the Retina MacBook Pro.   If you check the bottom of the page you can see if you GPU stress test the laptop it can get sufficiently hot.   About the middle of this page, you can see how Apple redeigned the heat pipes along with fans to bleed off Heat.

  • EFI Update broke my Retina Macbook Pro performance

Ever since I applied the last EFI Update that was released with 10.8.2 my retina macbook pro has been working awfully.
To begin with xcode, I don't know if it's the version 4.5 or what but switching from one plain file to another takes up to 1 minute and if I switching to a Storyboard it takes way longer. Right now all processes are taking up to 130% on activity monitor and it's impossible to work on it.
After waking up from sleep it's taking years before I can start typing, it takes up to 20-25 seconds, on 10.8.1 it took around 10-15 seconds and on OS X Lion it was instantaneous, What happened?
This is really affecting me, how can I fix this or roll back this EFI update or 10.8.2 all along?

This didn't solved my issue, Apps are still using a lot of resources.
I'm attaching a screenshot of xcode using 114% of the processor, no compiling is being done, just editing.
The rMBP has 16GB of RAM, so it's not pagination

  • How do I perform a "Suite Product Activation" so that Acrobat will start working on my new Retina MacBook Pro?

How do I perform a "Suite Product Activation" so that Acrobat will start working on my new Retina MacBook Pro?
Like others, I have recently upgraded my MacBook Pro to the next generation and migrated all my information from old to new. Everything works seamlessly EXCEPT Acrobat. Photoshop, Indesign, Bridge and Lightroom all seem functional. Acrobat hangs with an error message "Suite Product Activation Needed. Acrobat was installed as part of a suite. To enable Acrobat, please start another element of the suite (such as Photoshop)." Needless to say, starting another element of the suite has NO impact on Acrobat.
This has to be a common problem. Now that Apple has made it really easy to migrate information from old to new machines, it has to come up all the time. What surprises me greatly is that I can't find any coherent answer in these forums.
So how do I get Acrobat running again?

    Hi Anubha,
I do not understand what you said below.
I am running Adobe Acrobat Pro Version 9.5.5. I do not remember whether it came with Photoshop or InDesign.
When I open Photoshop, it opens without my having to follow any instructions to activate the software. As a matter of fact, I cannot find my Photoshop serial number anywhere in the Photoshop program itself. I do know it from my profile at Adobe.com. Are you suggesting I deactivate Photoshop on the new computer and then reactivate it using my serial number? Will it reactivate?
    When you say
"/Library/Application Support/Adobe" at the root level of the startup disk (not the Library folder inside a user's Home folder)
what do you mean? I do not have a startup disk. I have the original installation disk but that version of Photoshop has been updated a few times.
After staring at your instructions for a while, I realized that you might be talking about the Library/Application Support folders resident on my Macintosh HD, although why you called it a startup disk is unclear to me. IAC, I went into those folders and duly moved the three folders into a new folder I called “Acrob1” and restarted Adobe Acrobat 9 and got the following error message: “AMT Subsystem Failure  The licensing subsystem has failed catastrophically. You must reinstall of call customer support.” with a small (6).
By undoing my actions I am back to the staus quo ante.
    Now what?
    Regards, Robert

  • Mid-2012 retina macbook pro nvidia gpu panics

I bought my mid-2012 retina macbook pro in September 2012. It is 8 months out of warranty. I always look after it and use it carefully. Since 2 weeks ago, I encountered the problems below,
1.turn into black screen after running for about 15 mins, but the system is still running because the keyboard is still functional. After reboot, i record the log as below, it shows that it is a GPU Panic.
    2. display would not turn on after pressing the power button but can still hear the apple start up chime and the system keep running with the screen
    off.
    3. after erased the hard drive and re-installed Mavericks. Under a new installed system, it can run normally for about 1 day, after that especially after a shut down or restart, the problems above came back.
I am currently working in Thailand but I have no plan to go back to the US in a short period of time. I brought the laptop to the local apple service, they said it is certainly the logic board or GPU failure and the parts need to be replaced. The cost of the replacement is around half of the price that I paid for this laptop. I feel really disappointed so I called apple telephone service if there is anything that they can help. However, instead of helping me allocate the cause of these problems, the suggestion I received is to buy a new Mac Book and accept the fact that I am just unlucky in this case. This is the first time in my life to encounter mother board or GPU failure excluding artificial damage, they are supposed to be reliable espeically under the name of Apple. It is just so hard for me to accept it.
Below is the system message of the problem, it would be much appreciated if anyone can give me some suggestion that can help me to fix my problem at the lowest cost. Thank you very much.

Just started getting these too. The only workaround I've found online is disable the discrete graphics card using gfxCardStatus. I can't use my multiple monitors when using just the integrated graphics card, but it's allowed me to limp along until I have time to get into an Apple Store.

  • Mini display port to HDMI make my retina MacBook Pro have strong  static

Hi god, every time I use my new Retina MacBook Pro only one weeks old using internal battery connect mini display port to HDMI to my Sony  LED TV my MacBook Pro will have will strong static all around the body! If I plug in the Mac adapter the static will be gone! It never happen to my old MacBook Pro 2011 early! Pls help...

If it is the same adapter, then I would bring the MBP and the adapter to an Apple store for evaluation.  If not, the adapter may be the problem.
    Ciao.

  • Thunderbolt to Ethernet Adapter doesn't work with Retina MacBook Pro

I can't seem to connect to Ethernet with my Retina MacBook Pro. I bought an adapter and when I plugged it in, the network setup assistant showed that I was connected to the internet but my web browsers (Safari, Firefox and Chrome) couldn't connect, nor could any other programs (like Mail). The error message said that my computer was not connected to the internet, which did not match what Network Diagnositcs said. After a phone call with Apple Support, I had a replacement adapter mailed to me. With the new adapter, my computer now says that it is connected to the internet and I even have an IP address, but programs still can't connect and I get an error message saying the DNS lookup failed. This happens even when I manually enter the DNS server. I have already tried running the Thunderbolt software update 1.2.1 as well as the recent Thunderbolt firmware update, but the installer says they are not compatible with my computer. The problem occurs for both Thunderbolt ports. Is anyone else having this issue? I have no problem connecting to WiFi, so my temporary work around is using internet sharing on my old MacBook, which can connect to the ethernet connection in my apartment with no problems.

Hmm. Well I tried rebooting with wifi off but that didn't fix things for me. Would you mind sharing what your System Information says under Thunderbolt? This is what mine looks like:

  • Macbook pro fan running slow

macbook pro fan is running slow and hot.  it fluctuates between 212 and 375 rpms.  heat rises up to 104c.  do i need to replace the fan?

Before I suggest advice, I urge you to keep your machine under 160F at all times. I don't want to sound like an alarmist, but you can seriously damage your machine with that kind of use. Some solders melt at 225F, weaken at 190F.
You may have to replace the fan - or you may need to clean the inside of your machine and fan. It's hard to tell without inspecting your machine.
Or you may find that you need to get a different browser, and become more aware of temperature; laptop machines are much more sensitive to termperature issues than desktop Macs. Some day, you'll thank me for that advice.
