Retrospect - backup to disk?

My disk space needing backup has grown to the point where it is no longer practical to backup to tape (5 GB per tape) or ZIP-style disks . So I figured I would tell Retrospect (v4) to backup to some spare fixed disk space I have.
That simple concept has turned out to be quite a BIG deal. I can't sem to get it to happen.
Have you a better plan for backing up 300 GB (give or take) on 3 separate computers? Or perhaps you've solved the "backup to disk" option. If so, please
tell me about it.
I like Retrospect (having v3, v4 and v5 available) but if you suggest a change to another piece of software, I'm open to the idea.

It's the Server version.
It definitely shouldn't have any file size limit, I definitely had 400GB+ single backup sets in Retrospect 5.
So again, which VERSION do you have ? open retrospect, apple menu, "About Retrospect...". Hoping that' it's mab missing an update that would resolve this.
I WAS working with v4.1i. But based on Hiroto's message I installed 5.0.201.
Can't find any options in Preferences or Script options that may limit the size.
It appears to be the older version I was using that limits the size.
OK, I had a look through the manual too. For AFP-mounted volumes, the maximum file size is 2GB before OSX 10.3. So either get a bigger internal disk or upgrade the OS. This restriction is also in Retrospect 6 so I suspet it's an AFP issue.
Ironically, after finding it in the manual, a google search for "retrospect 5 os9 2GB" finds it too.
Well Hiroto's message contained the clues I needed to get me going. The actual magic was to tell Retrospect to "Erase" the blank media (ie the FireWire disk). Then I was able to use the disk as the backup device sucessfully - after making sure the catalog file was somewhere other than the backup disk.
Thanks to you both.

  • Can Time Machine Backup a Disk that has OS 10.4.11 On it?

    I have two startup disks on my computer. One starts up with OS X 10.5.2, and the other starts up with OS X 10.4.11. I also have a third disk that I use as the Time Machine backup disk.
    If I have started up with OS X 10.5.2, can I backup the disk that has OS X 10.4.11 with Time Machine? Does Time Machine create a backup that can restore the OS X 10.4.11 disk, operating system and all?

    I think you guys are right! One key is that I now understand can't restore a Tiger system from Time Machine. Thanks. I totally missed that.
    My 10.4.11 "Tiger" system is on my MacBook internal drive, and my Leopard system is on an external drive. What I am going to do is:
    Use Time Machine to back up "Leopard", but not "Tiger"
    I'm going to back up "Tiger" using Retrospect. Then use Restore in Disk Utilities to make a copy of the "Tiger" disk on an external firewire drive. I believe that this disk can be a startup disk, if I so choose.
    Next move the "Leopard" disk to the Mac Book internal drive. I can use either "Restore" or "Time Machine" to do this. I think "Restore" is the way to go, because I won't have to insert the "Leopard" install disk.
    When I am finished, I will have "Leopard" on the MacBook, an external drive, and Time Machine. My old Leopard disk will be archived by Retrospect, and will also reside on a bootable firewire disk.
    Whew!
    What do you guys think about this?
    Thanks for the help, and I think there is a possibility of screwing up when you have two operating systems on two different drives on the same computer. I especially follow your logic on Time Machine being designed for Leopard and not Tiger. Thanks for the clear thinking.
    Long term I am going to have to devise a better method of safely upgrading operating systems while at the same time keep my old stuff available. Time Machine seems to be the perfect solution for that delima.

  • Since you can no longer backup to disk, how to restore from external drive without losing all ratings and playlists

    since you can no longer backup to disk, how to restore from external drive without losing all ratings and playlists?

    My own opinion is that you should install the later appropriate version of Silverkeeper. That said, I would in fact recommend if you can wait a few days for an answer, that you email the La Cie Silverkeeper backup team via the email link on the site at http://www.lacie.com/silverkeeper/
    They are careful to say they are not officially providing a backup service, but when I emailed them with a query regarding usage about a year ago after downloading Silverkeeper for myself, I got a reply within a couple of days that cleared up my question.

  • Using time machine backup on disk connected to airport extreme router?

    So I've read a number of articles about using an external hard drive connected to the airport extreme base station as a time machine backup. The thing is that I'm writing this in august 09, most of the articles (which say the feature is officially unsupported) date about a year and a half ago. I'm wondering if there have been any developments since then.

    I also have this problem -- it started about 2 weeks ago (around July 20?), possibly at the time the new Airport Extreme firmware went into effect. I have two separate Mac laptops that each use Time Machine to back up to different disks that are attached to the Airport Extreme (i.e., each laptop has its own backup-destination disk). Both were working flawlessly before (for more than 6 months); now, each one reliably drops the connection to the disk (produces an error message, and thereafter cannot re-connect to the destination disk until I cycle the Airport Extreme with power-off/on). I had hoped that 10.5.8 would help (the release notes talked about improved stability with Airport connections), but not so.

  • Backup (clone) disk - cannot open apps

    I am very careful with backups, using a combination of Time Machine (for incremental time-stamped backups) and I also do a complete clone, on a weekly basis, of my entire HD on to a FireWire backup.
    To be sure that the backup has worked, I always restart (selecting the FireWire backup in Disk Startup) to ensure that the computer opens OK and everything appears to be working.
    Except it's not ...
    When I boot into the backup, pretty much every app I open appears briefly then immediately crashes.
    I have no idea what is causing this, so I need to ask some higher powers for help!
    For info: I'm using Carbon Copy Cloner and doing incremental backups to the Firewire drive (making it bootable).

    OK, so this does not seem to be CCC only issue.
    Today I tried to do the same using SuperDuper (as suggested), partitioned the drive in the same way (GUID) then let it do its backup. After startup on the backup disk, the exact same thing happened.
    So, I have tried this on:
    * 2 different target drives (both LaCie Rugged drives FireWire 400)
    * 2 different Macs
    * 2 different backup programs (CCC and SuperDuper)
    Note that the 2 Macs are almost clones (one was a fresh install and then data migrated across).
    So I'm not really sure what to do next! I've repaired permissions on the source drive before backing up ... not sure what else to do now.
    Any ideas?

  • Resume a failed RMAN incremental 0 cold backup to disk

    Linux x86-64 10.2.0.4
    I'm taking an incremental 0 backup to disk of a database that's mounted. I'm backing up the database to an NFS volume. I lost the NFS mount. Is there any way to resume a backup where it left off at? It complains "ORA-27038: created file already exists" if I restart it. RMAN can easily resume a restore. I don't have the time to redo the whole thing all again. The database is over 10TB. The target isn't up. Is there anything I could do?

    Hemant K Chitale wrote:
    I lost the NFS mount point, as in it was no longer mounted to the host. If it was any other scenario, I wouldn't be attempting to resume it.and
    I still have the previously restored files. I wouldn't be recieving "ORA-27038: created file already exists" otherwise. I am still confused.
    I guess that you are talking of a BACKUP not a RESTORE (unlike the sentence that says "previously restored files").I meant backup. I'm also doing a restore for another purpose, so it was on my mind. It was some sort of phsychological slip.
    >
    "The NFS mount point is no longer mounted.". So what happened to the files that did get written to the NFS mount point ? Did you copy them to tape before the NFS mount point got unmounted ? Or is the NFS server still up and running, with the partial backup intact on it, except that the remote mount is disabled ?
    We had a network problem and we lost the NFS mount. Most of the files are there, just not the whole database. I didn't copy them to tape. The whole purpose was to use the backup as a clone by manually recreating the controlfle, and pulling it into another ASM instance on another cluster. We first need to pull it out of the current ASM instance. The NFS volume was remounted, but my concern is being able to resume the backup from where it left off at.
    How about running
    BACKUP ... NOT BACKED UP SINCE TIME 'date_string'From the documentation : "This option is a convenient way to back up files that were not backed up during a previous failed backup. For example, you back up the database, but the instance fails halfway through. You can restart the backup with the NOT BACKED UP SINCE TIME clause and avoid backing up those files that you already backed up."I'll have to give that a try. It sounds promising.

  • SQL Server backup on disk from DB13 in 6.20

    Hello,
    is it possible to perform database backups on disk (remote and local) in transaction DB13? Is the Enterprise Manager the only way to perform backups on disks?
    The only media type available in DB13 is 'Tape' and I can't change this option (maybe there is no option). SAP Library provides confusing information, as it states that bakcup on disk is possible in DB13, but also points to the documentation of MS SQL Server in order to achieve it.
    We have WAS 6.20 in 4.7 ES 1.10 with MS SQL Server 2000.
    Thank you.
    Antonio Sánchez.

    I think there is something called as virtual devices in enterprise manager which can be configured as TAPE device.
    This virtual TAPE could be a actual TAPE or a DISK.
    Try configuring it and see if it is visible in DB13.
    We had done this 2 years ago, don't remember it properly.
    good luck.
    regards,
    siddhesh

    Update your BRTools. They are very old.
    Check that your DB is in archive-log-mode. If no enable it.
    testing backup
    - run a online backup
    - run "sqlplus / as sysdba"
    - SQL> alter system switch logfile; ... this switches the current online log... a new log will written to oraarch.
    - run a archivelog backup
    ... now you should have complete db-backup with minimum 1!!! archive log.
    Now you can delete old redologs from oraarch.
    If this doesn't work and your database is in archive-log-mode:
    - shutdown sap and oracle
    - MOVE all redologs from oraarch to a other location manually... no more files should be on oraarch
    - run a offline backup
    If the offline backup was running successfully you can delete the prior moved redologs. The backup is consistent and the redologs will no more required.
    - start oracle and sap
    Oracle should now write new redologs to oraarch. Test online backup!

  • Redo log backup on disk

    Hi
    I want to take Redo log backup on disk. what changes i have to made in init<SID>.sao file.
    Regards
    Vikram

    Hi Vikram,
    If you use brtools then even without parameter change in init<SID>.sap also you can take backup.You have to provide media as disk at the time of backup then the backup will be stored in the default ....../<SID>/sapbackup.
    You you want to take backup to some other place then you have to change the parameter
    archive_copy_dir=<dirctory where you want to take the backup>
    But if you want to take using db13 then you have to change the parameter for backup media to disk
    backup_dev_type = disk
    archive_copy_dir = /oracle/<SID>/sapbackup

  • Online Oracle Backup to disk

    Hi,
    I am trying to run an online backup of oracle through db13 to disk on netweaver 710, however, there is no option to set the backup to disk that I can see.  Is there any parameters that needs to be set in order for this to run, or am I missing something obvious?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks
    Jay

    as we are having problems with an external backup implementation Backup exec 11d will not run an online oracle backup fully we have been told that there is a problem in the software and we are waiting for a hot fix to come out to resolve this, I would like to set up schedules in db13 to backup to disk whilst this problem we have is not resolved.  is there a way or is brtools the best option?
    Thanks again for your help.

  • Where has the backup to disk option gone in iTunes 10.4?

    The option to backup your library is gone from iTunes 10.4 (or at least I cannot find it) and that was a feature I used regularly as a secondary backup solution.  Where has it gone?  Is there no easy way to backup your library to disc now?  Is the only way to backup now with time machine?

    I logged a case with iTunes support and received a call back yesterday. The agent had no clue that 10.4 did not have the backup to disk function. After i insisted that it was gone, I was put on hold, and he came back with an amazing explanation. All he could tell me is that it was because the "iCloud" would now be the way for users to backup, but at a cost of course. He was unable to give any details or point me to any refrence material on this change. in my opinion, this is an amazing change in the way apple does business. Like the US congress, they changed the rules in the shadows, and did not tell anyone they were doing it. OK, i understand that tech savy users will see this as no problem, but how about good old normal Joe who is not a techie and uses the backup to disk function as his primary backup? Joe will now have to wait for the iCloud to become mainstream, wait for instructions that do not exist today and pay for the ability to backup. Apple has gone the way of all the others now, revenue befoe the customer! This is a very shady way to change a policy and changes how i think of apple as a company. When will they come clean and tell everyone about the change, and how? Bad move Apple!

  • Backup to Disk and Tape

    Looking to convert our RMAN Tape backups to Disk using incr merge.
    RUN {
    RECOVER COPY OF DATABASE WITH TAG 'incr_update';
    BACKUP INCREMENTAL LEVEL 1 FOR RECOVER OF COPY WITH TAG 'incr_update'
    DATABASE;
    Then we want to backup all backupsets to tape for archive. So questions are
    1) How do you tell RMAN to only backup backupset that have not been backup up to tape already?
    2) Once a week, we would want to backup the full image copy "TAG 'incr_update'" to tape as well.
    Thanks...

    Thanks for the info... As a follow up question... I see some samples for IMB out there like so:
    run {
    recover copy of database with tag 'incremental_merge_backup';
    backup incremental level 1 cumulative copies=1 for recover of copy with tag 'incremental_merge_backup' database;
    What is the COPIES=1 for? Can't seem to find any docs on how it affect a IMB.
    Thanks..

  • Can I backup other disks?

    I have not used Time Machine yet and was thinking of using it after I upgrade to 10.6. But, I am wondering if Time Machine will backup more disks than just the startup disk? Can I tell it what disks (or even what folders) I want backed up?
    I have a startup drive plus 2 other internal drives and want to back all those up onto 1 external drive. Is this possible?
    Thanks.

    Hi, and welcome to the forums.

    If you have a problem setting-up or using Time Machine, start with the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip.* It will show you how to locate the message(s) that describe the problem, then help you fix it. If that doesn't help, post back with details, including all the messages, your setup (especially the destination for the backups), what you've done, and the results.
    Since you should have a full backup of your data before upgrading, you might want to start now.
