Returning user... with questions...

First off.. Thanks for taking time to read this post...
A little history : I started life on an Apple II and learned from there..I finally ended “the journey” on an Apple IIc (I know Mac was there, but not for me...$$)..I, like many entered “PC” land and was ok with it(not happy mind you)..After many years of dealing with Gates I made the jump to something more *nix based (currently running Gentoo and Ubuntu Linux on “boxes”) and found that my only reason for keeping up with Redmond was for a specific program. I recently had the opportunity to assist a co-worker with the set up of his network at home and had the chance to set up a MB..Basically it was love at first use(again!)...So I am the very proud owner of a new MB and have a few questions..:
First how do I change the terminal settings(would like to have green on black v.s. black on white)?
Second with OS X being BSD based can I, or better how do I, compile open source software based on code v.s. binary packages(is gcc or the like out there for Mac (like to use open office, but not in French))?
Third.. How can I mount remote drives(via SMBFS)?.. I have a few bash scripts that I can use in Linux for this, but they keep dieing out in Darwin/terminal..or better yet where can I find the information for this(have tried the man-pages, but I'm not having any luck yet)?
Finally could someone steer me in the direction of an interface device that that would allow me to import my old VHS/HI 8 tapes(RCA:USB/Fire Wire). My final goal is to turn the old tapes to DVD( my MB has a super drive)....
Thanks again!
Bill
P.S. Sorry if this is off topic...Thanks!!

I can help a bit on a few of your questions.
1. To change the Terminal window appearance, select "Window Settings..." from the Terminal menu in the menu bar. You will get a Terminal Inspector window. Select "Color" from the top drop-down menu in the inspector window. The second drop-down menu from the top has some standard color schemes, one of which is green-on-black. You can also make your own and change the transparency.
3. Available SMB volumes should appear in the Finder under the Network icon. Alternatively, you can use command-K and enter the IP address of the volume.
4. Check out these companies: elgato.com and formac.com. Both make Mac compatible video analog-to-video converter boxes.

  • New Macbook Pro User with questions

    Hello,
    Since 2003 i have been posting questions pertaining to my beloved G5. the motherboard went on me so I go a macbook pro. So far its very nice and I will prolly be posting questions for years to come. Thankfully I backed up everything on Time Machine two days before the computer bit it. There are certain things I want on this computer and certain things I don't. Can I pick and choose which things I want? Also, how do I get my Safari bookmarks and my iChat settings (the names I have given all my buddies) on my new laptop? Thanks for your help!

    I assume your backup is on an external drive that you can connect to your MBP. I would then use Migration Assistant as one option. It will allow you to restore from a TM backup on another computer or connected backup drive.
    Be sure you are careful about what you move as your old computer was a PPC computer and not everything on it is compatible with Intel Macs. I would only transfer your personal files as well as your mail, address book, etc. You will also need the preference files for Mail, AB, iCal, etc. and they are located in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder. AB, iCal, and iChat also have folders in /Home/Library/Applications Support/ that will need to be transferred. Avoid transferring any system files or applications that are PPC only. PPC-only apps should be reinstalled or upgraded to universal binaries.

  • New user with questions on desktop software

    Just picked up my curve, and what I was expecting when I downloaded the desktop software was to see a desktop version of the calendar, tasks, and contacts, thinking that I could more quickly add contacts, tasks and calendar dates using my computer, then syncing them to the blackberry, but it doesn't appear that I can do that on my computer, is that correct?
    I don't use Outlook either if that makes a difference.
    What I'm trying to do in the long run, is to get rid of my palm, and have all of that info in my BB. With the palm, I like it because I can open all the apps on my computer, make changes and addition, then sycn it with my palm, I thought that the BB worked the same way.
    Thanks

    I loaded clips into iDVD (HDVD?). Since they were three different subjects. I split them into three different projects. But now I want to add one project onto the end of the other. I know this must be possible, but can't figure out how. I tried importing, but I get an error message that it won't parse!?! I don't have the exact wording since I am at work on my pitiful Windows PC.
    Thanks for any and all help to this budding Spielberg

    You can't import one iDVD project into another iDVD project.
    You can import three "clips" into one iDVD project.

  • Captivate 7 - Some Users Not Getting 100% of Answers Correct with Question Remediation

    We are using Captivate 7 content to deliver courses via Adobe Connect 9.1.  We are experiencing an interesting issue with question remediation. When a user takes the quiz question and gets the answer wrong, the user is taken back to spot in the course where he/she can review the information.  Once the user is done reviewing the information, he/she is taken back to the question to answer it correctly.  The learner has infinite attempts to get the answer correct.  In theory, the user should always get 100% for the final test score.  We are noticing that some users (10%) actually don’t get 100% of the answers correct according to Adobe Connect transcript reports.
    Is there something we can look at to see what might be causing the incorrect score?  Is there a known issue?
    We publish Captivate 7 content as SWF/HTML 5 on Adobe Connect 9.1.

    Unfortunately, the discussion here led me to the resolution, but is not terribly valuable from a Captivate standpoint.  It turns out that we have a custom database script running on the Adobe Connect back end to correct people who have been left in an "In Progress" state even though they have a passing score and appear to have completed the course.  To avoid the script changing these records to pass, we bumped the passing score to 100%.
    Thanks for the help!

  • Can a user with Contribute privileges invoke SPFolder.SubFolders.Add(folder) Sharepoint 2010 API in a Webservice?

    We have a Webservice deployed on a Sharepoint 2010 deployment with a method as follows:
    public static string ensureParentFolder(SPWeb parentSite, string destinationUrl)
    destinationUrl = parentSite.GetFile(destinationUrl).Url;
    int index = destinationUrl.LastIndexOf("/");
    string parentFolderUrl = string.Empty;
    if (index > -1)
    parentFolderUrl = destinationUrl.Substring(0, index);
    SPFolder parentFolder
    = parentSite.GetFolder(parentFolderUrl);
    if (!parentFolder.Exists)
    SPFolder currentFolder = parentSite.RootFolder;
    foreach (string folder in parentFolderUrl.Split('/'))
    try
    currentFolder = currentFolder.SubFolders.Add(folder);
    catch (Exception ex)
    FINEOSLogger.Medium(LoggerCategory.FINEOSToSharePointDMS, "User could not create SP folder so elevating permissions");
    SPSecurity.RunWithElevatedPrivileges(delegate()
    currentFolder = currentFolder.SubFolders.Add(folder);
    return parentFolderUrl;
    When invoked by a User with only Contribute rights the SubFolders.Add( ) call appears to fail and the
    SPSecurity.RunWithElevatedPrivileges
    code is invoked, which also fails.
    1. So the first question is should you be able to invoke SubFolders.Add() with only Contribute?  It works with Design privileges for the Customer.  You can add folders on the Sharepoint website as a Contribute user so why not on the API.
    Customer raising this as a security concern.
    2. Also why would the
    SPSecurity.RunWithElevatedPrivileges
    part fail, is the syntax incorrect for Sharepoint 2010?  We migrated this code from Sharepoint 2007 project.
    The error I get when I try run the code as a Contribute user is

    Note that the user SPWeb being passed into the method is from an impersonated user, don't know if that matters.
    So the webservice payload contains the id of the user who wants to do the Sharepoint work while the webservice is invoked by anonymous or some other service user.  We then impersonate the user specified in the webservice payload like follows and use
    that web SPWeb from then on in the webservice methods:
    userToImpersonate = currentWeb.AllUsers[user];
    site = new SPSite(fileUrl, userToImpersonate.UserToken);
    web = site.OpenWeb();
    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ruairi.

    Ideally, a user with Contribute permissions should be able to add folders. Not sure what is the issue there. But I can see that SPSecurity.RunWithElevatedPrivileges is not written properly. You must create a new SPSite object inside the delegate
    because SPSite objects created outside do not have Full Control even when referenced inside the delegate. Use the using keyword to ensure that the object is disposed in the delegate. Example:
    SPSecurity.RunWithElevatedPrivileges(delegate()
    using (SPSite site = new SPSite(web.Site.ID))
    // implementation details omitted
    });See this for more information about SPSecurity.RunWithElevatedPrivilegeshttps://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/microsoft.sharepoint.spsecurity.runwithelevatedprivileges%28v=office.12%29.aspx?f=255&MSPPError=-2147217396

  • Vendor return integrate with FI

    Hi friends,
    We process vendor return with shipping . Process is create vendor return PO>create return delivery>PGI
    Post goods issue hit movement type 161 and relevent GL . Right now, key user need different GL to be hit based on different eturn scenarios.. So I copied 161 to generate say z61 and assign diffient GL to Z61.
    My question is how to configure to let user be able to process diffierent process?
    Thank you for providing info.
    Linda

    Hi,
    Movement  type -
    > 161 is used for Stock material returned to vendor via Return PO only .First you need create return PO for Returns material with  return indicator with Price
    Now carry on transaction for return in t.code MIGO or MB01 with 161 movement type. So stock of material will reduce from your stock with affecting stock account as credited, now as you wanted where & how other G/L account will l come here and get credited?
    After MIGO for161 movement type, next steps are:J1IS(Excise Invoice ),J1IV( Post and Print Outgoing Excise Invoice) , MIRO (Credit memo w.r.t. Returns PO) & finally J2IUN (Utilize the Excise Invoice)

  • What is the best way to create a bookmark for a returning user??

    Hello all... hello again Steve...I am back with another question- what is the best way to implement a bookmark system so returning users can pick up where they left off in an AW lesson? I have tried the usual internet searches, always do, but the few samples/answers I have found were AW5, not much help...
    I have a dozen or so maps attached to my framework, I would like a user to return to the last map he viewed before closing. (My AW is communicating fine with an Access database, so if passing a variable to Access and then back to AW when the lesson starts is on the right track, let me know...) If the answer here is too complicated, maybe nudge me in the right direction and I will dive back in.
    Thanks in advance to anyone who has some guidance, I really do appreciate it!
    Terry

    Try this outline, see if it helps ...
    Grab a reference to the Map as you enter it, then save that to the database when you leave.
    You want something that will give you the equivalent to a page number - if you have 7 maps hanging off the Framework, and the user is in the 6th map when he exits, you want to save the number 6.
    There are scores of ways to do this, but probably the easiest is just to attach a calc to each map that has this code
    (I don't have Authorwar handy to check syntax, so you should check!)
    BookMarkPage = ChildIDtoNum(IconParent(IconID), IconID) <-- tells Authorware to return the "page number" of the current map
    Save BookMarkPage to your Access database on exit .
    On return, read the bookmark back into BookMarkPage, ask the user if he wants to return to bookmark. If yes, use a calculated navigation that uses
    ChildNumToID(@the name of your Framework or it's ID, BookMarkPage)
    Note that you could wrangle something similar by saving the IconID of your Map, or the IconTitle, but both of these can break if you ever update your file by adding or removing pages, renaming them etc. With this method, all you need is a simple page count check that ensures that you are not trying to nav to a page number that does not exist (use IconNumChildren).

  • Why users with rights defined as View cannots see the data of the form ?

    Hi,
    I have a nice form page. My application has an authorization scheme with an authentification function : return acl_custom_auth. It is working well. I have defined users with Edit, View and Admin rights. Unfortunately on a form, if the user is defined as "View" he cannot see the data, he only sees the item but their content is not diplayed. I don't understand why. I would like him to see the data.
    The authorization scheme of the page is "Access control -view" as well as the items of the page.
    Do you have any idea of what is going wrong here ?
    Thank you for your kind help !
    Regards,
    Christian

    Another thing that can be done though mon tech-savy people may not know about it.
    Locate a group of PDF's and select at least 5-6 of them as a Group.
    hold down Option key while click on file menu
    Click on Get info.
    One window will open for the group.  in Mountain Lion (OSX.8.2) the term will change to Show Inspector.
    click on the  button next to Open With.
    choose either Reader or Acrobat.
    just bellow is a question Use Acrobat (or Reader) to open all files of this type, Click on it and choose yes.
    Make sure you have a mix of Adobe PDF's and Preview PDF/s for  this to work. If it wasn't good for opening other Type Files I'd compress Preview and throw the original away. It’s a nusiance.

  • First-time Mac user with Migration Assistant woes

    I'm a new Mac user with a MacBook Air. Still trying to get the migration process completed after three days so I can start using my computer. Looks nice, at least. Three questions:
    1. After a 36-hour migration attempt from a PC over Wi-Fi, and with 2 hours to go, I'm getting a "Reconnecting to Mac" window on the PC. If it reconnects, how long could it take? It's still sitting there after 15 minutes.
    2. If I cancel the migration process, do I have to start over and cross my fingers for another 36 hours, or does it pick up where it left off?
    3. Is there any way to get a faster file transfer, say by Ethernet cable (I have the adapter), USB, anything. This is becoming painful.
    I have verified the Wi-Fi connection is up and running. I can connect and reach the internet from my PC.
    I don't want to schlep to the Apple Store. I bought this on Apple's assurance that the migration process would would work. If it doesn't, I'm returning it.
    Thanks.

    Steve, you don't have to run Migration Assistant right away. You can set it up as if you weren't going to migrate anything. You can start using your Mac right away.
    Later, you can run Migration Assistant any time you want.
    Depending on when you cancel MA, it is probable that whatever it did up to that point will be lost. 36 hours is unreasonable.
    After you start using your Mac and are comfortable that it works to your satisfaction, connect the two with an Ethernet cable. Make sure it's a Category 5e or Category 6 patch cable (most are today). Then run MA. That ought to work and nothing will be faster.
    For what it's worth I never got MA to function properly upon initial setup. It ought to work in theory but mine would get stuck at about the 99% point. Running it after initial setup has always been more reliable. I don't know why.

  • Create new user with specific UID

    I have posted this question in the 10.4 group but I need to do it on Leopard, too.
    Creating a new user from the Accounts GUI creates users with UID's 502 onwards. How do I create a user from scratch with a specific UID, e.g. 1234?
    I know that modifying user 502 won't work because trash files etc. are set up with 502 in their path names.
    Any help, links to help etc. appreciated.

    Peter,
    In Leopard, UIDs can be changed just as Baltwo described. I do not know if this will also change the UID of files in the user's HOME folder, but you can do that yourself. In fact, it would be a good idea to do so, manually, in any case.
    Go ahead and change the UID for the user as described. This should be done from a different, admin account. Then, open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal. Type the following, followed by a <RETURN>:
    <pre style="overflow:auto; font-family: 'Monaco'; font-size: 10px">sudo chown -R username /Users/username</pre>
    In the above text, you will replace all instances of "username" with the short name for the user in question. If the short name is "fred," for example, you would type the following exactly:
    <pre style="overflow:auto; font-family: 'Monaco'; font-size: 10px">sudo chown -R fred /Users/fred</pre>
    When you press <RETURN>, you will be asked for your admin password. Enter it (it will not be echoed) and again press <RETURN>.

  • Site Login Behavior For SharePoint Foundation 2013 Users With Expired Passwords?

    What are the most user-friendly ways of getting external users with expired AD passwords back into the SharePoint site with a new working password?
    We already send automated email notifications to users reminding them to change their soon-to-expire passwords.  However, sometimes they miss seeing the email notifications before the password expires (such as after returning from vacation or just carelessness
    and lack of attention to email messages) or they see the warning messages and forget to act on it.
    When this happens and they try to log into the SharePoint site from the Internet, their login fails without telling the user the reason they can't log in is because their password expired.  So, they end up confused and call the help desk to get their
    password reset.
    Is there a way to set up SharePoint Foundation 2013 login in a similar way to the OWA login so that, when a user with a correct but expired password tries to log in, it gives them a prompt to set a new password right there rather than just an error indicating
    their login failed for unknown reasons or password is "incorrect?"

    It could be done. You get a different event log entry for an expired login attempt than for a wrong password, 4625 events denote a login failure and an error ID of 23 denotes a logon failure.
    A naff, but simple, approach would be to create a tool that checks your server logon event log for 4625 entries and then emails that user, or the help desk, or security, that they're trying to get onto your system with expired credentials.
    For a more polished experience you've got a lot more work and bluntly it's going to be impractical for you. You'd have to re-write sections of the SharePoint authentication process or intercept the process, both are risky and not a good idea to try.
    There's a really interesting paper here that might be of interest, it won't help you in your current situation but it might shed more light on the overall authentication/authorisation process.

  • How do you update software when there are multiple users with different (unknown) apple ID's?

    We are a college with different users borrowing 'loaner' Macbooks.
    several users with different ID's have installed software that is now tied to that Machines serial number, and cannot be updated or removed apparently. We are trying to update iPhoto for use with iBook author, but it was installed by an unknown user and cannot be removed.

    The only practical solution is to wipe and re-provision the units when they're returned.

  • PDF addresses not longer load and display PDF in Firefox and solutions suggest to other users with problem DON'T WORK (work fine in Chrome and Safari)

    This is an ongoing problem with other users. When putting a PDF in address window of Firefox and clicking go to address FIREFOX WILL NOT LOAD AND DISPLAY THE PDF. This problem has come up in questions from other users on your site. NONE OF THE SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS WORK! (trying either the Firefox PDF viewer or the Acrobat viewer as default viewer)
    I am using Firefox 23.0.1 (as some of the other users with the same problem). This was not a problem in the past with Firefox. Safari and Chrome continue load and display PDFs just fine from their addresses. This is a big problem as I now have to inform people who want to view my PDFs NOT TO USE FIREFOX BUT TO USE SAFARI OR CHROME.

    It appears that a link to a PDF on an internet page will not download in Firefox either!
    I went to this page:
    http://www.nasa.gov/connect/ebooks/earth_art_detail.html#.UjYEzrwsU08
    and tried to download the PDF link at the bottom of the page (Download: PDF 11.3 MB) It didn't work! Nothing happens. Tried it in Safari and it worked flawlessly.
    I have a PDF file of my work in the public_html folder on my URL. I give the address generated by that file to people who want to view my work---this works perfectly in Safari and Chrome. As to your other question, can't bookmark it if I can't get to it in Firefox.

  • MacBook Pro flashes file folder with question mark and startup manager will not run

    My son's MacBook Pro won't boot (gets the flashing file folder with question mark).  When I try to open startup manager (holding "option" key during boot does not do it).  Other posts suggest inserting the install disk, but I am pretty sure that for Lion, there was no disk, it was just off the website through the App Store.  Any further suggestions?

    Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
    When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
    Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
    Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
