RH7 can't open FrameMaker 8 docs

Just downloaded RoboHelp 7 last night. I was anxiously
awaiting its arrival so that I could convert some FrameMaker 8
documents.
However, there appears to be a problem. I'm able to open and
view the FrameMaker 8 documents just fine in FrameMaker, but for
some reason when I try to open them (either .book or .fm) in
RoboHelp 7 I get a message that the files are not valid FrameMaker
files.
Also I'm trying to access the help files and am unable to
view.
Anyone else experiencing this problem?

Here is exactly what I am seeing when I try to open a
Framemaker book or fm file, step by step
First I create a project in Robohelp HTML For book files,
here’s what happens.
1. Choose File > Import > FrameMaker document
2. Navigate to the folder and select a .book file. The
Content Settings dialog appears.
3. Leave all settings at default, except check Apply
FrameMaker Conditional Text Build Expression
4. Click Next. The Style Settings screen appears.
5. Check Convert AutoNumbers to HTML list. But when I click
Select to choose the user defined HTML tag, nothing happens.
6. When I click the Edit button to configure Style Mappings,
nothing happens.
7. When I click Finish nothing happens.
Now, for the FM files, here’s what happens …
1. File > Import > FrameMaker document.
2. I choose one of the fm files in the same folder as the
book.
3. Leave all settings at default except I check Apply
FrameMaker Conditional Text Build Expression.
4. Click Next to go to the Style Settings dialog.
5. Check the Convert AutoNumber to HTML List option.
6. When I click the Select button, I receive a message that
“filename.fm” could not be opened. Please verify that
this is a valid FrameMaker document.
7. When I click the Edit button in the Style Mappings section
, the RoboHelp Style Mappings dialog opens. But the styles
available in the FM file are not listed.
I tried a Repair installation thinking that something might
have installed improperly. Still no change. I can import MIF files
of the same FrameMaker documents without a problem, but can't
import a book or a FM file. 8-(
And thinking about it more, it sure would be nice to have the
direct link to the FrameMaker document so that I could edit in one
place.

I can't open attachments on my iPad 2t and I can't open jpgs, PDFs, docs. or movie files now.

Obviously, you are talking about the mail app, so force close the mail app and reset your iPad. If that fails, reset all settings.
In order to close apps, you have to drag the app up from the multitasking display. Double tap the home button and you will see apps lined up going left to right across the screen. Swipe to get to the app that you want to close and then swipe "up" on the app preview thumbnail to close it.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.
When you reset all settings, you will not lose any data, but most of the device settings will have to be entered in the settings app again. Settings>General>Reset>Reset all Settings.

My Macbook pro came with snow leopard. I decided to upgrade to lion so I could use cloud. Now I can't open any word doc. that I receive in emails. Is there any way to remedy this?

You don't tell us what version of Office for Mac you presently have, but I'm guessing it might be Office for Mac 2004. If so, in addition to the suggestion to download OpenOffice you can purchase the most recent version of Office for Mac 2011 directly from MS <http://www.microsoft.com/mac/buy>. You can also purchase Pages productivity suite from the Mac App Store <http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pages/id409201541?mt=12>.

  • Can not open .pdf or .doc files in mail

Every time I receive an email with a pdf or .doc file attached I can never open it as I get a message telling me that the file was not recognised or that the file is invalid. Even if I select to open using Adobe for the pdf I get the same.
Any help gratefully received. I've always had this problem and get round it by viewing these emails online instead. But it's not as convenient of course.

    G'day jbglass,
I had the same problem, getting the same error message etc. I solved the problem by going to Google Chrome and using that to download the file ( a pdf brochure in my case).  That worked OK.  Hope this helps.

  • Pages v4.0 (727) can't open or save .doc files

    Hello everyone,
for a while now I haven't been able to open or save .doc files with Pages. When trying to open a .doc file I get the following message:
"The document "example.doc” couldn’t be opened."
I have tried the following to solve the problem:
    1. run Software Update, which told me there were no updates available
    2. checked my applications folder to see if Pages was in the iWork '09 folder in order for SU to be able to detect updates (it was)
    3. reinstalled Pages from the iWork disc and run SU (which again couldn't detect any updates)
    4. deleted the com.apple.iWork.Pages.plist file from the Preferences folder in the user library on the Macintosh HD
I'd be very grateful if someone could point me towards a solution, I've spent an age on google looking for one and haven't found anything useful so far.
    Thanks in advance

Are you still on MacOs 10.6.1? You should update it to 10.6.8. Use the Combo update here if the Software Update check doesn't work (which it should) http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
And here you can find the iWork 09 updates. Software Updates should find them!
    iWork 9.0.4
    iLife Support 9.0.4
    You need both.

  • Pages: How can I open a pages doc without having pages on a computer?

I use my laptop (pages) for everything but I have a presentation that is due for a class and I cannot open my docs from a windows computer at school. Can someone please help me? Thanks tons.

    Em,
    Welcome to Apple discussions.
You need Pages in order to save a file that's been saved in Pages' native format. But you can export Pages documents to Word or PDF so that they can be opened on Windows computers. From within Pages, click on File > Export > Word (or PDF).

  • Can not open MS word docs

I have an emac running 10.2.8, two users, when i sign in and try to open a word document from the desktop a window opens and says i can not open the document because it's in use by another user. I created this document and the other user has not signed on in months. I then tried all of my word docs and the same message appears. I've shut down the computer, restarted putting in my password but same problem occurs. I repaired permissions but no change. These are my docs and no one else is "signed in" or using them. I cannot copy them or send them via email (which now unexpectedly quits upon opening), Do I need to archive and install?, How much free space on the hard drive do I need to reinstall the OS?
    Thanks for any response.
    Joe

Many system issues can happen as the hard disk drive's capacity is over-full
with saved content and there is no room left in the hard drive for the OS X
and applications to function. The drive should have more than 10% free of
content in order for the OS X and Applications expected to run in the Mac
to have room. This space is for swap files, virtual memory, and flex space
where the system has to automatically find and use free space for most
    everything the computer can do.
{There are specific rules (seen online in helpful articles, some in Support)
on how to transfer iTunes music libraries or make and restore archives
to external hard disk drives and maybe save to DVD if possible; these
    and iPhoto libraries eat up essential space on a hard disk drive.}
The drive is over-full and a failure (including damage to the physical drive)
is a matter of time. He should try to archive music on DVD off the Mac
& then free-up that space on the internal hard disk drive so the OS X
and apps can use the free space for their required functions. Moving a
few dozen original items, after saving them off the computer, to Trash
may be helpful, but that would take a lot of time & looking.
An externally enclosed drive, properly formatted for OS X and capable
of booting the computer (firewire 400) is advised; at this point.
My computers have about 50% empty hard disk drives; that free space
allows the OS X's automatic virtual memory allocation to create and use
that space to help the apps and system function properly. When it is not
there, the system tries to overwrite non-essential files or could cause a
kind of corruption to happen on the main hard disk drive...
The documents and other permission issues are a symptom of other stuff.
    A computer in a good state of maintained health requires some effort;
and when that is not done routinely, things get slower and as the drive
gets full, stuff can fail. So, to free-up user created files such as music
(including hidden duplicates if they exist) so that space can be reclaimed
and used by the OS X, is a good idea.
To get and use an externally enclosed hard disk drive in a self-powered
unit with AC Adapter, probably a FireWire ported one so the transfer
rate is fast enough to get the job done (USB 1.1 is too slow to boot an
older computer, so FireWire can; a clone of the entire computer could
be created on a formatted FireWire bootable externally enclosed drive
and that could be used as a bootable backup.) Archiving this way is a
way to keep all the files and their status collectively together; then if
something happens to the computer's internal drive, this remains.
To boot the computer from the OS X install disc and see if a disk repair
and a permissions repair can be done in that disc's version of Disk Utility
may be helpful. Not sure if that old of a system will tell you much in this
Disk Utility (on installer disc, but not used to install anything) but you
can Verify the SMART status of a hard disk drive & also try to repair it.
But the drive is over-full if there are only mere MBs of free space. He
should look into the Get Info (File menu in Finder) on the Hard Drive
Icon to see what the total capacity of that drive was, and how little is
remaining; then work on getting rid of non-essential items, so as to
save the system itself from damages. Also, if the computer is getting
    older, it may be time to consider a new replacement hard disk drive;
and if so, a larger capacity one could be installed, and the older one
put in an external FireWire enclosure, then the content may be cloned
back into the computer on a partition or direct; so there'd be more
free space that way for the contents. (Or weed out non-essentials, too.)
More information would be needed to proceed, since this situation is
at best sketchy and could be problematic to say the least.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Can't open MS Office docs because X11 software not installed.

For a couple of weeks now almost every document I receive by email, and even some old documents of my own on my hard disk, will not open by double-clicking. When I do double-click a dialogue box appears which says "OpenOffice.org for Mac OS X cannot be started, because the X11 software is not installed. Please install Apple X11 first from the Mas OS x install DVD. More information: http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/faq/installing/X11.html". Please note that I can open all these docs OK from within Word etc (i.e. by going File / Open .....)
Not having the Apple Install disk with me (I am traveling at the moment) I made some investigations and downloaded Open XML File Format Converter for Mac v 1.0 but clearly this has not solved the problem as I hoped.
Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

For some reason, the default on your docs has been changed.
If you right-click the document in question and select "Open With" and then select "Other" and browse to your MS Office Word app, you can select it. Be sure to check "Always Open With" to make it the default for the future so you do not have to repeat this procedure.

  • How can I open a google doc on IPAD 2?

Created a google doc presentation.  The presentation slides open, but slides cannot be edited.  How can I edit the slides using the IPAD2?  Otherwise, is there some application for IPAD that can be used like a Google Doc?  Thank you.

After you open the Google Docs presentation, there should be a bar at the bottom of the screen.  Select 'Actions' and then choose 'Edit'.  You'll get a message saying that the browser doesn't support all options, or something to that effect -- just ignore it.

  • Can't open any work docs using pages.

Whenever i try and open a word document using pages 09 it says that "The document “223lectureslides.docx” couldn’t be opened." this happens with all documents including power point. This is really a problem because i am unable to view any assignments i have.
    Help please

Don't forget that TeachText can open .DOC files. There's another thread involving .DOC files here which might give you some guidance on how to troubleshoot the problem.
Also, PowerPoint documents can be saved in a play only format (they aren't editable) and I'm not sure if those can be opened by Keynote. These have PPS and PPSX extenders if I recall properly.

  • XP user can't open my word doc

I've been working with a bunch of PC users for neary 12 months now since I migrated to Mac. Not really had any problems with PC users not being able to open my word docs. But in the last two days suddenly a 2MB word doc I'm working on is not even able to be opened by an XP user. I've done the compatibilility check and it says there is font substitution but no other problems. Anyone else having this problem? Any hints on how to avoid. We're working to a deadline (of course) and this really isn't helping.

The first thing I can think of (since you are working to a deadline) is that you save the word document in RTF format on your mac. Just open the word document on your mac, go to the "file" menu and select "save as". Towards the bottom of the save dialog you should see a dropdown list to select what format the document should be saved as. I believe the very last option is something like "Word 4.0/RTF". That format should be somewhat more compatible with Windows.
I do have to say I still haven't encountered a situation in which a word document created on a mac is not readable on a PC. If my coworkers new that for the past year they've been getting word documents from me created on a mac they probably wouldn't believe me.
Another thing you can try: Save your word document normally. then go to the finder and create an archive of the file. This will generate a ZIP file. Transfer the ZIP file onto the XP computer, uncompress it, and try to open that file in Word. That may increase your chances of having a readable file.
    I hope this helps. Regards,
    Julian

  • Can't open Apple Works docs in Pages

Strange, but: The 1st day I used Pages I could open Apple Works and Word docs
just fine. The 2nd day trying to open Apple Works docs resulted in
the message: "Import Error- the Apple Works document has an unsupported file type"
Word docs still open OK. Anyone?

To save as a "newer" AppleWorks file (i.e. AppleWorks 6 file format), you'll need to have AppleWorks 6, which will open older file formats from version 5 and then give you the option to save the as version 6 files.
However, your friend will not be able to open these AppleWorks files with Pages: as Peggy and others have pointed out on numerous occasions, Pages can only open AppleWorks word processing files (and even in this case, there are restrictions; as far as I can remember, it will only open documents with floating graphics. Or was it the other way round, and it cannot open files with floating graphics? If I'm wrong, please feel free to correct me, Peggy); it can't open spreadsheet files as iWork '05 doesn't have a spreadsheet program which could handle the data. I'd suggest finding someone who has AppleWorks 6 (anyone with a Mac mini, iMac or eMac), opening the files and saving them in a format which Excel can read.

  • Can Pages open Microsoft 2004 docs

I've just purchased Pages. Was using Microsoft Office 2004 and understand that the older documents are not compatible with Lion. I have not upgraded to Lion yet- will I be able to open the older docs w/Pages after I do the Lion upgrade or do I need to convert the Word files prior to the upgrade?

The OS doesn't care what format your documents are in, it cares what format (so to speak) your applications are in. MS Office 2004 was written/compiled for the old PPC processor. Previous versions of the OS had a translation layer, called Rosetta, that allowed software written for the PPC chips to work with computers that have the new intel chips. Apple has not included the Rosetta layer in Lion. This is why MS Office 2004 will not work with Lion.
Now Pages does care about what format your documents are in and it will read the files created with MS Office 2004. One thing to be aware of is that complex formatting in you word documents (columns, embeded graphics, charts, etc) that formatting may not look exactly the same in Pages.
Simply put, you can upgrade to Lion and not worry about having to convert your documents before hand. Pages will open this documents after the OS upgrade.
As a public service announcement. Backup your data before you upgrade your OS, just in case.
