Rhvariable.apj file

Hi,
When I try making changes to the variables, either adding or
modifying, I receive a message that an error occurred while trying
to read data from the rhvariable.apj file. This message occurs
every time I press "Save".
How do I fix this?
Thanks,
Jackie

Oops, there is a special character - (Product name is Forte).
How do I remove this variable from the help? I have tried
editing the rhvariable.apj file, as well as removing it from within
RoboHelp, but this hasn't solved the problem.
(I am not using source control. I have 2 PCs)
Thanks,
Jackie

  • Version control not synchronizing the rhvariable.apj and default.css

After we had many problems with the 8.0.2 update, we managed to get a compile that was mostly correct and it buys us a couple weeks.  We are still having problems with the rhvariable.apj and the default.css files.  We had to edit the .cpd file in MS Access to get our global variables back from just before the update.  I did not want to manually enter 800+ variables again.  If my colleague edits the rhvariable file, i can't edit the file and i get an error.  If I edit the file, he can't read my file.  In order to get a compile with the variables we cut and pasted my variables into his .cpd file and it worked, but, now we are adding more variables and changing others resulting in only one of us having a working copy.  My system complained about the default .css which did not come down from the server so i just pasted his file to my directory and it is working but we are having problems editing that file also.  This is crazy.  The 8.0.2 really hurt us and is still hurting.  We are trying to run with it but having some significant problems.
    Got any ideas?

    Try this test.
Create a new project and create a variable with no value. Close the project and open rhvariable.apj with a text editor. You will see nothing has been saved, the variable name will not be there.
Now open the project and enter a value. Close the project and open the rhvariable file again, now you will see the variable and the value.
This seems to confirm that RH does not allow a null value variable to be created in the rhvariable.apj file. It may show it in the interface but that was not the problem.

  • Rhsnippet.apj & rhvariable.apj issue

    Hello Everyone,
I found following issue. If you know following issue and you know how to avoid this issue, please reply.
    Procedure for Reappearance
Opening a project file in Robohelp.
There is no update in Robohelp.
    Closing a project file.
    Expected Result
rhsnippet.apj and rhvariable.apj are NOT updated.
    Actual Result
    rhsnippet.apj and rhvariable.apj are updated.
Comparing these files between before update and after update, I found that order of snippet and variable written in these files are changed.
    Problem
The Robohelp source data is editted by multi authors, and we are using subversion for manage the source data. So we are encountering confiction by this issue, when we commit or update source data to subversion.
    Robohelp Version
    Robohelp 9.0.2
    Best Regards.

    Hello,
    Sorry for late reply.
I do not use the auto-update feature.
I use variables in a snippet.
Problem is that order of each variable or snippet written in the file is changed automatically, when the file is saved.
We are managing rhsnippet and rhvariable in SVN, so we are not able to see the difference between each revision.

  • Error reading .apj file?

I've had RoboHelp 9crash during generating files in TCS 3, and now I'm getting a message about how an error has occurred while trying to read the My RoboHelp Projects/RHFrameDocs.apj file.
It appears on re-opening the project. Is this a conversion setting file, and what do I need to do to resolve the problem?

Never mind. It was a new test project, so I just removed it and started over.

  • Can an index be modified without the rhsharedresource.APJ file?

Our team uses RobobHelp HTML 9 in version control, and usually someone else has checked out the rhsharedresource.apj file.
Can I modify the index and save my changes by checking out the HHK file only?
    Thanks,

  • RoboHelp 10 .apj file error issues & crashing on save and generate

    Hello All!
I am working with a large FM book (100+ FM files) that we have linked to a RoboHelp 10 project.
Everytime I update my RH project I am getting this error:
I have tried copying the folder, deleting the .apj file, and reopening. RHopens just fine.
The other major issue I am having is when I save and generate the project RoboHelp freezes up and won't save & generate the layout.
I have all of the FM files open and updated. Everything that can be updated in RH before save and genereate is updated. Any ideas??
    Thanks!!

I have moved this post to FrameMaker Integration as I think it will do better there.

  • Ignore or include *.apj files in source control?

    Hi all,
We're using Mercurial (with the TortoiseHg front end) for our source control. I haven't really worried about this question since before now we've only had me as the writer. But now, we've added another writer and we'll be sharing projects. I've read in other posts that the *.apj files should be included in source control. But to me, it seems that the rhlayout.apj file doesn't have anything to do with the content of the help. So, what about this rhlayout.apj file? Should it be include or ignored in the repository. I'm leaning towards ignoring it as I don't want to mess up the layouts on my colleague's computer. Thoughts?

That's correct Jared. The other items I mentioned are all controlled by different .apj files. Just as a matter of curiosity, why don't you want to share your SSLs?

  • Which conditions require the rhsharedresource.apj file to be checked out?

Our team uses RoboHelp HTML 9 (upgrading to 10 this week), and we use version control. The rhsharedresource.apj file is always checked out by someone.
When is it absolutely necessary to check out the rhsharedresource.apj file?
Can you modify an index by checking out the HHK file - without the rhsharedresource.apj file?

This sounds like you have lost your synchronisation. See snippet 14 at http://www.grainge.org/pages/authoring/rh9/using_rh9.htm

  • The rhextdocauxdata.apj file

In RH8 there is now a rhextdocauxdata.apj file which appears to a file that contains details of any linked FM and Word files. The file is blank if there are no linked files. My question is, that this shows up on the Unused Files report if there are no linked files so I am assuming that it is OK to delete. Can anyone see a problem with this?
    Read the RoboColum(n).

I stand corrected. It looks like the file only contains references to FM files and what is more is only updated when you generate your output. It even seems to retain references to FM files after the links have been deleted from the project. I think I'd just like some more info on the file. Thanks muchly!

  • Is it possible to export and import a set of variables?

    Hi,
I'm using RH8 under WinXP. I use variables for our product names (=single software modules). This makes it easier to change the name, if a product name has changed. For each of these products there is a single RH-project. Now I want to import a set of variables, that I've created in one of those projects, to another project. Up to now, I haven't found an export/import option in RH for these set of variables. Is there a possibility to import/export these variables?
    Kind regards
    Stefan

Set up a test project close it, copy the rhvariable.apj file from a project with the variables into it. Reopen the test project.

  • RH8 has broken all links to all photos on top of corrupting our manual.

Thousands of links to every photo in our entire book are gone.  Topics are a few lines long rather than 10 to 20 instruction steps.  I am looking for a backup now.  I am considering rolling back to RH7.  We had no problem with RH7.  We will call Adobe for support at this point.  Just when we felt like we were getting ahead, we actually opened our topics just to find a little text one photo box that is empty and ... NOTHING.  I was wondering why the project zipped up to 220Mb when it should be 550Mb.  All of the photos are in the folder, just no links.  This is the worst possible thing at a critical moment.  Unbelievable.
    Great, just great.    errr

We may have a solution to the problem.
We moved our project to another computer with RH802. Took a good version of the .apj file that previously damaged and placed in into the correct location in the project.  This version has a valid rhvariable.apj file which contains my 800+ global variables.  We also left the .cpd file intact and opened the project in 8.0.2 and it seems to be working.
I am currently taking our working 8.0.1 project out of version control (a 2 hour process over the VPN/internet).  Brutal.  Then we are going to put this 8.0.2 version into version control.  We both will apply the 8.02 update.  Then pull new copies of the project from version control.  This should give us both working versions of the 8.0.2 project.
Knowing what the all of the various files do makes it a lot easier to understand why our project was killed by the update and how to repair.  Luckily we had working versions of the .apj files that we could cut and past the important content to the new file.
Your page was helpful and got us looking in the right direction but it was a very painful process and this whole adventure cost us valuable days at a critical moment.  We are going to take a much more cautious approach to future updates from Adobe.  If they come at a non critical time, we will probably wait until we have time to recover from any problems.  Otherwise, we will have to discuss, look at the forum for problems others are having with the update (if any), and then weigh the advantages to taking the update.  I hope we don't have to go through this type of fire drill again.
I appreciate your attention to our problem and willingness to help.
I will make a final reply once we get this working in RSC.
    Thanks
    dv

  • RoboHTML - automating with maven

We automated the help build/deploy process using a combination of maven and CVS. All was working fine until one of the writers introduced variables. We are running RHTML 8.0.2,
and using just Default Variable Set. When we generate locally (from RHTML UI or from command line), the output shows the variable substitution. However, when we generate
using mvn package or mvn deploy (which creates the help.war and puts it in the right place for the system build), the variable substitution breaks. We have checked the sttings.xml,
revised the pom.xml to try different ways to run the WebHelp compiler through maven. The rhvariables.apj file is in the directory with the XPJ file (and other apjs). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

After much experimentation, I stumbled upon another Post in the forum that actually provided the solution -
User-Defined Variable not Updating at Generate Layout
The project was imported from an older version of RH and none of the older topics had a Master page assigned. I assigned the project's Master page to a few of the older topics that have variables, reran mvn package to get a local help war file. When I looked at the output from maven, the variables were properly substituted. If anyone understands why RHCL run from the RHTML UI or from the command line gave the variable substitution just fine yet when run from maven it didn't, please post here.

  • Conversion from RH7 to RH8 hangs on 1 of 5 projects - no err msg

I have successfully converted 4 of 5 RH7 projects. The one project that won't convert doesn't have anything special or different about it. It is not my most complex project nor my simplest.
Once the conversion starts the meter bar goes about 1/3 of the distance then RH8 locks up (stops responding). No error message is presented.
Pre conversion I removed the projects from RSC, removed read only attribute, and deleted .cpd.
I have tried the solution from this thread http://forums.adobe.com/message/2312324  (open the .hhp, selecting Noto the xpj prompt.) with no change in the result.
Obviously the problem is with the project, but I don't know what else to try. Is there a conversion log or some way to know what file is being converted when it locks up?
    Specifics
OS = XP with all patches
    RH = 8.0.2.208
    Project location = C:\TW_Local\RoboHelpProjects  (not a networked folder )
Project history =Originally an MS Word file, converted to RH6, converted to RH7
    Project zip size = 28MB
Thanks for any help or ideas.
    John

You could check if the rhvariable.apj file is blank. If it is, copy one from a working project. Or see snippet 79 on Peter Grainge's site which contains code you can paste in. The problem manifested in RH6, but it's possible it's still an issue in RH8.

  • Sharing UDVs between projects

I've been looking for a way to copy a set of UDVs from one project to another, but have so far been unsuccessful. I know RH10 doesn't offer an import/export option for UDVs (why?) but I assumed that I would be able to manually update the rhvariable.apj file to get the job done. The problem is that RH10 seems to pay no attention to such manual updates, instead reverting to the UDVs that were in place when the project was last exited.
If RH10 isn't really reading in the values from the rhvariable.apj file when a project is launched, where is it getting its UDV information from?

Just a guess but have you tried copying the rhvariable and deleting the CPD before you reopen the project?

  • Snippet Management

I am aquiring a large number of snippets for my project and I
need to manage them. RH7 places the last created snippet at the top
of the list in the snippet pod. I know I can move it up and down by
right clicking on the snippet. However, it only moves one spot at a
time and as this project grows, it will become tedious if not
impossible to continue to group snippets in this manner.
Is there a way to alphabetize the list as a default? If there
is, using proper naming conventions will always keep the list
    grouped.
Even dragging and dropping within the list is better then the
    right-click: move option

What I am saying is that I used a special search tool that
looks for words inside many different file types. I named the
snippets with words not elsewhere in the help and I included the
    same words in the snippets.
By that means I got a list of all the files containing those
words. I expected the list to include the rhvariable.apj file, the
snippet files and the topic using those snippets. What this method
often reveals is other files that contain those words so that you
learn where else RH stores information. Those words do not appear
    in any other file.
The program will not search the CPD file in the project so I
searched that by other means. At the moment therefore there seems
to be no way of manipulating the list as you want.
