Right-click in safari 4.0.4??

Just updated my Safari to 4.0.4, only to find I can't right-click anymore. My mac is from early 2007, OS X tiger and so my right-click command is "ctrl + click". however, in the new safari that now just opens the link, rather than giving me the right-click options box. How do I get them instead?

If your Safari keeps crashing, or if you are updating Safari (or just have) and it is misbehaving:
N.B. Never delete Safari, never run it under Rosetta, don't use proxy settings, and don't change the application's name or move it from the top level of the Applications Folder to a sub-folder.
(If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Safari 4.0.4 for download can be found here:
http://www.apple.com/safari/download/
Make sure you download the correct version for your system.
Also, observe the recommended procedure for installing software: repair permissions and close all applications, install, then repair permissions again.)
Input Managers and other plug-ins from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari. Remember: Tiger up to 10.4.10 used Safari 2.0.4 or, if you downloaded it, Safari 3.0.3 beta. Safari 10.4.11 used Safari 3.0.4 which was not a beta and which was updated to v.3.1.2, and now both Tiger and Leopard uses Safari 4.0.4. If Safari 4.0.4 is not the fastest browser you have ever used, then something is wrong!
(Trying to revert to a previous version of Safari can have repercussions, as Safari 3.x uses a completely different webkit on which other applications like iChat, Mail, Dashboard Widgets etc also rely, but if you really want to do this post back for instructions on the safe way to do so.)
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party ad-on. Add-ons that have been frequently mentioned here, among others, for causing such problems are Piclens, Saft, AcidSearch and Pithhelmet. If you have them, trash them and go the developer's sites to see if new versions are available for Safari 4.0.4.
You should also ensure that you have downloaded and installed all the correct version for your Mac of Security Updates. These require a restart and a permission repair.
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
• Hard Disk/Library/InputManagers
• Home/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates and updates to Safari (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

  • Right click in safari 4.0.3 always causing alert sound

Hi, I've just come across this issue, whenever I right click directly in any web page of safari 4.0.3 (by directly I mean, without any text selected, and not in the input field), an alert sound appears. I've tried checking my mouse settings, repairing disk permissions, restoring defaults of keyboard shortcuts, uninstalling some recently installed software/apps, but none of these works. Yet if I right click with selected text or in input field or in any other application, there's no such issue. I wonder if this is a bug of safari 4.0.3 or what. And now I'm really frustrated and can't figure out what can be done to kick this alert sound away. Please help, thanks in advance.

i've had this problem for a while now. i can remember being able to right/ctrl click in safari, but it just refuses to work! very annoying when i want to speak selected text, for example. i have pith helmet installed (which i hate btw - causes more annoyances than solutions), could that effect it?

I don't know for sure, but it's possible. Try uninstalling it and see what happens.
Also, have a read of item 16 on this page. Maybe it applies to you.

  • Right Click with Safari

We have a scheduling calendar software that works with IE on Windows and with Safari on Mac (Safari 3.0.3). There is an entry field that requires using a "right click." Again works with Safari on Mac.
I can use the site with Safari on my iPhone (much to the envy of my Blackberry toting partners), however, I can't figure out how to make a "right-click" gesture or entry. If I could do that, then I would have full function of the site.
Anybody have any clues? Or is this just not available yet?

    Leon Bell,
Just like with a one button mouse on Mac OS X, holding on the item will present the alternatives.
For example click and hold on the link, until you get a popup that says, "Action", and then move your finger over action, and then release.
    Hope this helps,
    Nathan C.

  • Tiger safari 3 can't ctrl / right click!

Im using tiger 10.4.11, and safari 3.
    suddenly i can't ctrl-click anymore within safari...
how do i reinstall safari - without the safari3uninstall pkg since i trashed the original dmg?
Or rather, where can i download the original dmg again? I just want it to work again!
    Thx.
    Skip

You're right about being able to use it in a different account. Set up another admin account and the right clicking worked perfectly.
When I right-click in safari, the console throws up a nice little mess for me:
    2008-01-18 23:37:25.476 Safari[367] * -[BrowserWebView OTDQ_webView:contextMenuItemsForElement:defaultMenuItems:]: selector not recognized [self = 0x44e4d0]

Maybe you will be able to make sense of that!
    Thanks,

See something about webkits in there, and although im doubt it has anything to do with it, im going to go ahead and install the nightly build safari webkit.

  • Safari not allowing right click?

I have a fresh install of 10.4.7, whenever I start Safari, and make a spelling error, I right-click and safari gives me a beach ball of death. I also get the error whenever I try to create a new tab.
This sometimes goes away after visiting another web site, but I have to force quit Safari to obtain functionality again...
I have removed all preferences except the bookmarks, and it still happens. Any help would be appreciated on why this is going on.

What was your original OS? If it was under 10.4.0, PLEASE TELL ME! Otherwise try updating Safari in Software Update.

  • Can I right click on the iPad

Is there any way to simulate a right click in Safari on an iPad?

I'm in Safari and want to right click the page so I can View Source like on a PC. I tried holding down my finger and it    just highlights the first word on the page and allows you to copy or define the word. Similarly, if I see an image I want to download or copy I can't right click it.

  • Safari 6.0 crash when right clicking a link and choosing open in new tab

Hi all,  just a general question.  I admit i did not search the forums yet.  Hopefully this little annoyance can be resolved.
When using safari on say CNN.COM i'll right click on a link and choose Open in new tab.  safari randomly disappears.  no crash warnings,  just gone.  I can open it right up and be fine sometimes all day.   This has happened to me about 5x since ML was released (i wiped my laptop the day it came out)
This has happened on a couple of different website at different times of the day.  only safari was running. No other apple apps have this issue.
I have a MacBook Pro from earily '08 type 4,1
i have only apple software on this machine
i do have adobe flash installed v11.3 updated today.
    i do have lastpass enabled
    i do have ad-block disabled
While i'm waiting for help from you guys i'll disable all addon's and try to remove adobe to see if that is the issue.  Is there any other steps i can try like delete .plist file or maybe even trying a new user profile.  I am a IT professional and am not afraid to get my hands dirty trying to get this resovlved.
    Thanks in advance.
P.S. i'll search the forums too and if i see a similar post i'll remove this one.
    Bill Siegfried.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
    Step 1
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Right clicking no longer works in Safari

Just yesterday, I started experiencing a strange problem with Safari--the right mouse button no longer works. I also tried the right clicking option with command + clicking on the touchpad and that doesn't work either. Right clicking works outside the Safari window and in all other programs, so I'm pretty much baffled. I tried restarting the computer/reopening Safari and it allows me to right click exactly once before the right click option stops working again. I'm not going to use Safari anymore until this problem is resolved, so if anyone has any idea what's going on, please let me know.

While it is possible that a reinstallation is needed, let's start with some easier steps first. I would use some of the techniques described in [this article|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1199].
Do you have another user account on the computer? If not, create one (System Preferences > Accounts > Click on the lock to authenticate > click the "+" button to add a new account > fill in required info.) Next, log out of your usual account and log in to the other one. Launch Safari. Does the same issue occur?
If yes, you have a system wide issue. If no, it is a user specific issue. There are different methods for troubleshooting each. Post back here with your results and we'll see what we need to do next.
    Best of luck.

  • Safari does not download files automatically (not able to download at all - unless there is an option for a right click- download the linked file)

    Hello all,
I have been having this issue for a while now it starts to get very annoying. Not just Safari, all of my browsers are unable to download any files unless I right click to save. However, for some files/apps there is no way to download at all. For example, when trying to download and install Flash for Safari, I was stuck on a blank web page when the file download was supposed to start, but nothing happened so the installation was unable to proceed. Was trying to download Chrome too, same issue... I could see the download link (as URL) grrr...but it just did not do anything.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Mobile safari right-click?

quick easy question: how do you right click on the ipod touch safari? And make links open in a new tab? Is this even possible?

There is no way that I know of. Here is a link to a developer page about the iPhone it is kind of technical but it does have some good information about the differences between a mouse and your screen touch.

  • Right click "open with" yields 2 copies of "Safari", "Firefox" & "Quicktime

    Hi
I have this problem when i right click on a .jpeg .jpg file.
it yields 2 copies of "Safari", "Firefox" & "Quicktime. I have verified and repaired permissions using disk utility but to no avail. can anyone offer any help?
reward pts awarded. thanks in advance.

There are two possiblities: first that you actually have two copies (eg if you have a clone of your stuff on another drive that is mounted when you startup), second that your LaunchServices cache files have gotten out of whack. If it is the first case there is nothing to be done about that, if it is the second you can try deleting the cache files:
    "/Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices-0140.csstore"
    "/Library/Caches/com.apple.LaunchServices-0140501.csstore"
The first is the general LaunchServices cache, the second is user specific. After deleting them, restart the computer and new cache files will be created. You will also start seeing the "you are launching xxx for the first time" warning if you are in the habit of launching applications by double clicking their files. Eventually you will be on the second time and stop seeing the warning.

  • Safari 4.0.3 crashes on a right-click every time

I just installed the latest security patch specifically in order to install Safari 4 (the one is a requirement for the other). While I was at it I also installed the latest Quicktime update and iTunes 9. I had Saft installed previously for use with Safari 3 but I removed its components as they're not compatible with Safari 4.
Now, however, after restarting and everything I'm finding that Safari crashes every single time I try to right-click on a link (to open in a new tab, for example). EVERY time without fail...or, should I say, with a great deal of fail
This is on a dual G5/2GHz tower running 10.4.11. Can anyone help me sort out this issue? I haven't been able to figure out what's causing it but it's very annoying.
    Thanks in advance!
    Neal

    No I hadn't and no I don't
However, I did just download and install the appropriate version of Saft for Safari 4 on Tiger and that seems to have cleared up the issue. Or, at the very least, hidden it.
    Thanks for the suggestions!

  • No right mouse click in Safari?

    Hi-
When I right mouse click (Mighty Mouse) in Safari no popup appears. (The one that would have "Back" - "Forwar" - "Reload", etc.)
In Firefox right mouse click brings up this popup as does IE.
Am I missing something, can I get this to work in Safari?
    Cheers,
    D.

What happens if you control-left-click. This should bring up the same contextual menu as a right-click. If that doesn't work then I would try creating a new user account, launch Safari from that account and try the right-click. If the new user account works then you have a corruption issue in your own account. There is no option in Safari to turn this action on or off. Contextual menus are part of the operating system itself.
I have found that the right-click menu in Safari depends on where your cursor is when you right-click. If I right-click over graphic areas I sometimes get a different menu relating to images or graphics.

Firefox, Safari, and PhotoShop each handle embedded color profiles differently. For an add-on that makes it easier to experiment with Firefox's color management options, you might be interested in: [https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/color-management/ Color Management :: Add-ons for Firefox].
