RMAN backup of 8i target db using 9i rman scripts

Hello,
I have set up a server for Monitoring and Backup using OEM and RMAN, and I have installed Oracle 9.2.0.6 RMAN catalog, to store the backup scripts and the backup information
I have registred and taken backup of Oracle 9i databases, and it works okay. Now I want to register Oracle 8.1.7.4 databases and take backup of 8i target databases using the scripts and configuration setting that I created for 9i databases
Can I use the 9i scripts and "configure" command to backup 8i databases?
I had checked the compatability matrix on metalink (docid: 73431.1) and it suggested using same version of rman executable (.. wrt target database). Is it so?
I assumed that 9i RMAN is backward compatible and so this can be used to backup the 8i databases... sames commands and not just the 9i catalog. I get RMAN-6429 when I try to connect to 8i database from the backup server.
Please let me know if I can use Oracle 9i RMAN command and features to backup Oracle 8.1.7.4 databases?

Update on this thread (...the feedback I got from metalink)
No, you cannot use the 9i rman executable and features to backup a 8.1.x Database. The rman executable must match the Target Database when Target is 8.1.x.
New features in 9i are not backward compatible.

I am trying to setup incremental backup on my windows OS based server using RMAN command in batch file. When I use batch file in OS scheduler it is working fine, when I am calling same batch file from my LOCAL desktop PC it throws errors as below.

Is it "symantec's netbackup"? I do not know that product and if it has an option to enter your own RMAN scripts. On the other hand, it should be able to create irman scripts according to your backup job definition.

If you run RMAN backups of a target database using a Catalog schema in another database, the target is not aware of the catalog.
The RMAN backup script would have the connection identifier for the Catalog.

Let my production server running starts from 1st June .
In 15 june , I take the First rman full (or level0) backup using the command :
RMAN> backup database plus archivelog;
In 20 June I take 2nd rman full backup using : RMAN> backup database plus archivelog;
Again in 30 June , I take the Third(3rd) rman full (or level 0) backup using the command :
RMAN> backup database plus archivelog;
And also my rman policy set as :
CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 1;
In the above scenario , I have the following questions :
1) When I take the Third(3rd) backup then is it the First RMAN backup goes to obsolete as per my rman policy ( RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 1) ?
2) Is the above all RMAN backup make a link between them ?
3) If my first RMAN backup goes to obsolete and I have to delete the First RMAN backup , then which types of problem I face ? Can I go to previous state(suppose I need to back in 1st June) of my server if I delete First rman backup ?
4) when I take 3rd rman full backup , then is it all information from 1st january of the server are stored in the 3rd backup ? i.e., is the 3rd rman backup stores all the previous two rman backups information ?so that If I delete the previous two backup , then I get all information form 3rd rman backup .what is the actual scenario ......

1) When I take the Third(3rd) backup then is it the First RMAN backup goes to obsolete as per my rman policy ( RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 1) ?The REDUNDANCY parameter of the CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY command specifies how many backups of each datafile and control file that RMAN should keep. In other words, if the number of backups for a specific datafile or control file exceeds the REDUNDANCY setting, then RMAN considers the extra backups as obsolete.So as in your case the redundancy is 1 so the 1st and 2nd backup are obsolete.
To check the obsolete backups run
rman> report obsolete;
To delete them
rman> delete obsolete;

Is the above all RMAN backup make a link between them ?I am not very much clear with the question.The RMAN information is stored in the controlfile.You can also create a new recovery catalog and register the target database. The RMAN repository records in the control file will be copied to the new recovery catalog.

Forgot to answer the 3rd question
3) If my first RMAN backup goes to obsolete and I have to delete the First RMAN backup , then which types of problem I face ? Can I go to previous state(suppose I need to back in 1st June) of my server if I delete First rman backup ?well, i am not very much sure , but i think is , if you have the 1st rman backup pieces physically present on the disk, you can catalog it and then use the rman command to restore the data from it of till 1st june.
To catalog the backup pieces use
rman> catalog backuppiece 'filename';

How to find out when last rman backup was made in 9i

Hello,
i have an oracle 9i database running on windows here. Is there a way to find out when the last rman backup was done with a sql query?
I would like to create a job inside the database that regulary checks if a rman backup ran sucessfully instead of using scripts in the operating system.
But i only know about commands in the rman utility (that i can not execute as a job, right?) - is something similar possible with for example sqlplus?

Information on unknown rman backup file

Hi,
I have RMAN backup piece, and no information on this RMAN backup piece.
Is there any why to get the this backup piece information like which Oracle Database version the backup was fired on, database SID, backup timing and such.
Please help me out on this.

Hello,
You can find some of those information in the name of the files. Most of the time, there is the SID of the database, or the timestamp of the backup. If you have the autobackup of the controlfile, you will have the DBID which will be useful to restore.
You can also try the CATALOG command in RMAN (10g and above) to find the DBID and SID of the database that created the file. The CATALOG command itself will fail if you are not connected to the database that created the backup, but it will return you those information.
Regarding the version, it is hard to tell.
If you have an autobackup of the controlfile (filename begins with CF), then it is 9i or above.
If you have OMF files (Oracle Managed Files) , then it is 10g or above.

What i understood is you have a production database which you backup to tape with HP data protector now.
And i offer you forget direct backup to tape and, backup it to disk (FRA) first , then from FRA to tape.
But you mention about primary database in your second post, do ypu backup from standby or something else?

Create a database from 8i RMAN backup

I am in need to recover some historic data from a historic database's RMAN backup.
The situation is ... I have one old RMAN backup of a 8i database which includes datafiles, archivellog files and control files. Init.ora file is also available.
I have installed the 8i software in a host and created the oracle service through ORADIM and pwd file through ORAPWD utility. Then copied the init.ora file under 'C:\Oracle\ADMIN\ORCL\PFILE' and the RMAN backup files under 'C:\Oracle\Ora81\DATABASE' folder.
Now I can start the instance with the init.ora file but can not mount as control files are not there. when I try to restore the control files through RMAN as...

Sorry I wrongly said that I do not have the DBID, I have DBID but I have controlfile backup as RMAN backupset, not in Binary. So even if I set DBID, RMAN asks for the catalog database, which is not available.

Oracle EBS R12 - 11.2.0.2 - Logical Standby Database & RMAN backups

Hi all,
I have Oracle EBusiness Suite R12 running on 11.2.0.2. Our organization used to have most of the business in North America, South America and Europe; but now we are also in Australia, China and Indonesia. Previously running large reporting batch jobs and RMAN backups at night time in USA was feasible but now that is beginning to show up as performance issue for some countries.
I was thinking would it make sense to have a Active Data Guard logical standby database on a separate server in the same US based data center where we have our main servers and use that logical standy database for reporting and RMAN backups. I am especially concerned about RMAN backups. Would I be able to make RMAN backups from the logical standy database and somehow use those to recover our primary database if some issue happens?
Any thoughts/suggestions?

Active Data Guard only deals with physical standbys. If you are using a logical standby you can always open the database without using Active Data Guard option.

do you use image backup in real production environment?Of course. We have a standard to to use image copies that way.
what do you suggest to do with rman normal way of backup or go for image backup?Depends on your specific situation. Like anything else, I prefer to provide some rationale on the recommendation.
Image Copies with Incremental Merge
Pros:
(1) one one full backup taken ever; no need to take another full backup
(2) the restore time is the same, regardless of the day of the week the db failed
(3) every day the incremental merge's success means the backup was good - an automatic validation
(4) it allows you to quickly switch to copy, rather than restore
Cons:
(1) Space requirement is more (since it's a bit to bit copy)
(2) can't do a point in time recovery from the disk alone
(3) can't go to the tape directly; must be a disk based backup.
Backupsets with Incremental Backup
Pros:
(1) space requirement is lower (since only never-used blocks are not copied)
(2) point in time recovery is possible
(3) direct backup to tape possible (no need for disk backup)
Cons:
(1) restore time varies depending on the day of the week the db failed
(2) you have to take a full backup regularly, perhaps once a week
(3) no validation unless you use validate backupset (takes resources)
So, as you can see, there are pros and cons to each approach. You have to decide for yourself which one weighs more (or less) to come to a conclusion.

How we can use RMAN backup to restore oracle database when the RMAN backup pushed to tape already and being a OLD backup ( before retention policy date).
Just to elaborate a more.. Say my retention policy is 3 days. I want to restore from a old backup like 30 days old.
So surely the requesting backup is behind retention date and has been pushed to tape.
Please suggest.

Assuming the actual backup files still exist (the only thing actually deleted is the record of them in the catalog), you can make those files available and use the rman 'catalog' command to re-catalog them.

How to make an encrypted compressed RMAN backup and recovery

Hallo!I am trying to make an RMAN backup that is compressed (definitely use compressed backup set in OEM).
But my emphasis is to make the backup encrypted with a key (hoping to use Public Key Infrastructure )such that the database data can be sent via the network and the recepient can use a decryption key to decrypt the data.
The recepient must also use a password to access the encrypted file for decryption.
Is it possible to do this?If so please give the steps.

You can encrypt the backupset with RMAN Encrypted Backups, however Oracle Advanced Security Option (additional cost) is required.
