  • Raw Storage device for 10g RAC

    Hi
    What would be economical & of good quality RAW storage device for 10g RAC setup
    Thanks
    JIL

    Sorry, but what do you mean shared networK?
    Yes you need to ensure 2+ server hosts can access the storage array, but if you array can handle multiple direct connections then this is perfectly acceptable for RAC - this is Direct Attached Storage DAS.
    Your original post made me think of NAS which may not be what you were meaning, but is how I read network device - NAS, NFS kinda thing - which is NOT a requirement for RAC.

  • NIC ROUTER requirement for 10g RAC database

    I need to know what hardware to order in setting up an 10g RAC database without a single-point-of-failure. My question centers on the networks. If each server has one NIC for the public interface and one NIC for the private interconnect, aren't the routers these NICs are attached to a single point of failure? If each server has two NICs bonded together for the public interface and two NICs bonded together for the private interconnect, does each NIC attach to a different router?

    Infiniband supports the Internet Protocol suite over Infiniband, or IPoIB. It also supports RDMA over Infiniband.
    so do we need only infiband SDR / QDR switch to set infiband OR what else??You need an Infiniband switch - Cisco and Voltaire are two companies that supply this type of hardware. The latter is used by Oracle in its Exadata database machines. Unsure about Cisco's commitment to Infiniband switches as they have discontinued their Infiniband switches with integrated fibre channel gateways. A sore point with us after we bought into this technology about 2 years ago, in part on their very own recommendations - and now own very expensive, somewhat buggy and totally unsupported hardware. Seems like the new Cisco California servers are GigE and not Infiniband, which perhaps explain this (flawed) decision of theirs...
    For each cluster node, you need an Infiniband PCI card (typically has 2 ports). If you are going to use bonding, you will need a pair of Infiniband cables per server. Also remember to get spares - both PCI cards and cables.
    If you want redundancy at the switch, you need to get yourself 2 Infiniband switches.
    But if you're planning to invest this into a RAC cluster, then surely you should also invest money in RAC licensing and support - and with that gain access to very useful documentation like the RAC Starter Kit and so on.

  • Linux Cluster File System partitions for 10g RAC

    Hi Friends,
    I planned to install 2 Node Oracle 10g RAC on RHEL and I planned to use Linux File system itself for OCR,Voting Disk and datafiles (no OCFS2/RAW/ASM)
    I am having SAN storage.
    I would like to know how do i create shared/cluster partitions for OCR,Voting Disk and Datafiles (common storage on SAN).
    Do i need to install any Linux cluster file system for creating these shared partitions (as we have sun cluster in solaris)?
    If so let me know what versions are supported and provide the necessary Note / Link

    Now, for syllabus, I think you too search by google for something like "1z0-048 syllabus" and "1Z0-052" and/or "1Z0-053 Syllabus"
    Be aware, you will get many fake links of saying that "we are providing the exam dumps / pass guarantee". Don't and never believe upon them, simply ignore them.

  • Client requirment for 10g RAC

    Hi,
    We are planning to deploy Oracle 10g RAC on itanium Cluster. What is the Client and its version requirement to take full advantage of 10g RAC load balancing/fail over ?
    Shanmu
    India.

    If you want a realistic setup, then you need 3 physical PC's. VM ware installation is too easy, and you dont run into many of the issues you are likely to run into with physical computers. I recommend 3 old PC's with a KVM switch, with Openfiler as the previous post suggested. Put Linux on the cluster nodes, it is free and you dont need much horsepower to run it.

  • Parallelism backup in RMAN Orcale 10g RAC

    Hi All,
    I want to know how parallelism works for RMAN RAC
    Can you forward me to some useful links where I can get this information.
    One way of doing it is:
    CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK PARALLELISM 2;
    CONFIGURE CHANNEL 1 DEVICE TYPE DISK connect 'SYS/rac@node1';
    CONFIGURE CHANNEL 2 DEVICE TYPE DISK connect 'SYS/rac@node2';
    But in 10.2.0.2 onwards it says that we dont have to specify nodes. Oracle will automatically spread it accross node. is that true.. but doesnt seesm to be working?
    node1> rman target /
    run {
    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 1;
    CONFIGURE BACKUP OPTIMIZATION ON;
    CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE DISK MAXPIECESIZE 8G;
    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO'$RMANOUT/%F';
    CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK BACKUP TYPE TO COMPRESSED BACKUPSET PARALLELISM 2;
    CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK BACKUP TYPE TO COMPRESSED BACKUPSET;
    CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK PARALLELISM 2;
    allocate channel c1 device type disk ;
    allocate channel c2 device type disk ;
    backup incremental level 0
    database format '$RMANOUT/%d_%s_%T_%c_DB0' tag="DB_LEV0";
    backup current controlfile for standby format
    '$RMANOUT/%d_%s_%T_CONTROL_STDBY' tag "CNTRL_STDBY";
    sql "ALTER SYSTEM ARCHIVE LOG CURRENT";
    backup archivelog from time='sysdate-5/24'
    format '$RMANOUT/%d_%s_%T_%c_ARCH0' tag "ARCH_LEV0" ;
    backup current controlfile format '$RMANOUT/%d_%s_%T_CONTROL' tag "CNTRLFL" ;
    backup spfile format '$RMANOUT/%d_%s_%T_SPFILE' tag "SPFILE" ;
    will the above script run parallel sessions in RMAN.
    I queried gv$session I cant see 2 sessions, I can only see 1.

    if you want to enable parallelism you have (so to say) three ways related to channel allocation:
    1. in rman settings directly
    configure default device type to disk;
    configure device type disk parallelism 2;
    configure channel c1 device type disk connect 'aaa/bbb@node1'
    configure channel c2 device type disk connect 'aaa/bbb@node2'
    2. or directly in rman script, something like:
    RUN
    allocate channel c1 device type disk connect 'XXX/YYY@node1';
    allocate channel c1 device type disk connect 'XXX/YYY@node2';
    backup database plus archived log delete input;
    3. or you can use automatic workload balancing with setting:
    configure device type <disk or sbt> parallelism <number of channels>;
    and after that issue backup command.
    parallelism you may monitor by checking gv$session_longops
    also rman have option for 'node affinity awareness' which means that rman during backup determines which nodes in cluster have faster access to certain datafiles than to other datafiles.
    pay attention that the granule of parallelization for backupsets is the backupset...inappropriate setting of the parameter "filesperset" can lead backup to be serialized...specially if you use tapes...

  • Network Setup for 10g RAC

    We are planning a 2 node RAC cluster with nodes in two room on a single site. The shared storage will be on a SAN which is replicated/mirrored (via the SAN) to a second SAN in the second room.
    Setup
    room A :- Node A SAN A
    room B :- Node B SAN A
    Room B :- mirrored copy of Data on SAN B
    (both SAN and Host are capable of connecting to each other through SAN infrastructure)
    My question /issue is around the IP network
    The plan is for both node A and Node B to have 3 or 4 network connections
    1 - Public Net
    2 - Backup Net
    3 - Private Net
    4 - VIP addr - on the Public Net interface
    My question s are
    1 Do the Public Nets for both Nodes have to be on the same Vlan(subnet) or can they be on different Vlans (subnets)
    eg
    room A Public Net = a.b.1.0/24 (say gateway is a.b.1.1)
    room A Host A public IP = a.b.1.20
    room A Host A VIP = a.b.1.21
    and
    room B public Net = a.b.2.0/24
    room B Host B public IP = a.b.2.20
    room B Host B VIP = a.b.2.21
    assume that there are other host on both networks
    Will this work ??
    How does the RAC nodes load balance across both nodes ? and are the VIP addrs used to achieve load balancing ??
    Second question
    While I can connect both room via a private network without routing (via dedicated fibre to two dedicated private net switches. I could save $$ by using a private vlan routed to each room Say a /29 network ( a.b.3.0/29)
    Can I connect the private nets via a routed vlan ?

    The public IP's all have to be on the same subnet.
    Ie, the first 3 sets of number for the IP address
    must be the same for the public and virtual IP's.
    There are no options in that.Not necessarily, but probably most often correct. If the subnet mask is something other than 255.255.255.0, then the statement above may not hold and/or may not be sufficient. The public IPs and VIPs all must share the same subnet, that much is always correct. What constitutes the same subnet may vary based on the subnet mask used in your network.
    For example, if the subnet mask is 255.255.254.0, then 172.16.172.4 and 172.16.173.12 are on the same subnet. Conversely, if the subnet mask is 255.255.255.128, then 172.16.4.2 and 172.16.4.210 are NOT on the same subnet. If you're not sure, consult a network admin--there are also plenty of online tutorials regarding subnet masks and how they work.

  • What is the minimum required for 10g RAC AIX 5.2L on a SAN

    We have the following
    2 IBM p550's with AIX 5.2L
    Oracle 10g
    Hitachi SAN
    The questions I have are
    1. Does one need any addtional software such as HACMP ?
    2. Can one use just RAW 'disks' and not use ASM ?
    3. Can one using just the raw 'disks' presented by the SAN with ASM ?
    Anything else ?
    Thank you,
    -pete

    Oracle says that from 10g onwards, not need to have any other cluster software since it is providing CRS (cluster ready services) with 10g. However, having HACMP installed would be a good idea. I heard many problem, earliy release of 10g, aboug just using CRS instead of other clustered services.
    Well, we are using SHARQ d240 storage, but, didn't required any raw partition, and also not using ASM. Basically, we are in a testing mode.

    hi
    what is SBT here?
    CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE sbt PARALLELISM 3;
    Channel Connections to Cluster Instances with RMAN
    Channel connections to the instances are determined
    using the connect string defined by channel configurations.
    For example, in the following configuration, three channels are allocated using dbauser/pwd@service_name. If you configure the SQL Net service name with load balancing turned on, then the channels are allocated at a node as decided by the load balancing algorithm.
    CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE sbt PARALLELISM 3;
    CONFIGURE DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO sbt;
    CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE SBT CONNECT 'dbauser/pwd@service_name'Edited by: nisha on Jun 6, 2011 12:27 AM

  • 10g RAC remote monitoring

    IF I plan to offer one of my clients remote Dba services for 10g RAC- Standard Edition....do you necessarily have to use ASM to do so or is that just the Oracle push and I can actually use other file systems like Linux ext3, etc?
    And if I have to use ASM how hard should it be for my Dba's to train themselves on it?
    any help is appreciated.

    You are required by the Standard Edition License to use ASM with SE RAC (I am unsure of the license requriements wtih Standard Edition One).
    ASM is very easy to learn, use, and mangage. Your DBAs should have no problem picking it up. Check out the following links for information on ASM.

    From metalink
    Can I use OCFS with SE RAC?
    It is not supported to use OCFS with Standard Edition RAC. All database files must use ASM (redo logs, recovery area, datafiles, control files etc). We recommend that the binaries and trace files (non-ASM supported files) to be replicated on all nodes. This is done automatically by install.
    Modified: 01-SEP-04 Ref #: ID-5748
    And it's easy to manage those files, I think your DBAs just reading the doc can do that.

  • 10g RAC on HACMP (IBM clusterware)

    we are in process of making 10g RAC without using Oracle Clusterware. we will be using HACMP Cluster software and IBM shared storage. After looking at few threads as below:
    Re: 10g RAC on varitas Cluster Software + Shared storage
    Re: Varitas Cluster Software + Oracle Clusterware Installation
    came to know that Oracle Clusterware is compulsory for 10g RAC besides HACMP.
    Can some one let me know why oracle clusterware is compulsory and point me to some Oracle documents that mentions the same.

    ML Note:220970.1 is the RAC FAQ - it would be a bit too much to paste all details here.
    However, if you would let us know what details you are looking for, there might be other resources (not in metalink) that we can point you to. A starter could be this one:
    Oracle Clusterware Whitepaper (PDF) (http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/clusterware/pdf/TWP_Clusterware_11g.pdf)
    But the most important fact to note here is:
    Is it supported to allow 3rd Party Clusterware to manage Oracle resources (instances, listeners, etc) and turn off Oracle Clusterware management of these?
    In 10g we do not support using 3rd Party Clusterware for failover and restart of Oracle resources. Oracle Clusterware resources should not be disabled.
    (taken from ML Note 220970.1 ;-))
    Thanks.
