Root cause for 100 % disk utilization

Hi All,
Whenever in one of the dailog instance disk utilization is showing 100% sap system is getting very slow, what is the root cause for 100% utilization .At that moment of time when I checked the CPU usage it showed 98% CPU idle. server is on Windows NT and around 13GB of RAM is always free.
We have only one drive in the apps server. Can this be the cause of 100% disk utilization?
Waiting for ur frequent responses.

Prashant

Hi,
I have answered similar questions :
[Re: Disk Utilization 100%]
as described above, one thing that cause 100% disk utilization is that writer processes (and read process too) is concentrated only on a single disk (equivalent to single volume group or single logical volume).
we can imagine that a large number of user hitting the single disk (where datafiles exist) on the same time with a huge transaction load.
if we can manage writable datafiles in several locations (equivalent to several volume groups or several logical volumes) where several datafiles exist, writer processes (and read process too) will be distributed to that several locations, so that each location (each disk, each VG or each LV) utilization may not reach 100%.
so it is important to design writable datafiles in multiple location in different disks to prevent 100% disk utilization.
one thing should be remember is to consult with hardware and storage vendor if there is any possibilities bottleneck or I/O issue on your hardware or storage.
hope it help you.

  • Root cause for delivery to show up on LX47 transaction

    All,
I am new to SAP and supporting an off site warehouse location.  I'm trying to research and locate the root cause for why a delivery shows up on LX47.
The situation the warehouse is experiencing is that they are having to run the LX47 transaction multiple times a day to correct delivery issues.
I know from my initial research that deliveries show up on LX47 due to the OB Delivery being blocked, and that this is caused by the OB delivery and related Transfer Orders do not match in the system.
What I'm trying to figure out is, from an Operations standpoint, what is causing the OB Delivery and the TO's not to match?
Is there only 1 reason?  Are there 100?  This is what I'm trying to understand.
The only thing I have found thus far is that 2 people/transactions are in the delivery at the time of the update.  Is this accurate?

    Hi Nicholas,
I am sure you are very much aware about the process flow however i just want to narrate again, if the plant and storage location is WM managed then you generally create a transfer order with reference to the delivery document to perform the picking process now at the time of confirmation of the transfer order you can update the Delivery immediately (Standard SAP) or you can set the indicator to delay the delivery update(Check the below mentioned screen and IMG path).if you choose to delay the delivery update those delivery will appear in the LX47 and you have the provision to manually update  the Delivery from there. (Apart from the above mentioned there are some instance where after confirmation of the transfer order and in between updating the delivery either material master / Batch master / or some other relevant parameter is in edit mode or locked which cause failure to update the delivery immediately and you will find those delivery will also appear in the LX47)
Hope this will help to get some idea about LX47 and reason for delivery whose appear in the LX47

  • 100% Disk Utilization

    Hi All,
Most of the time of of our application server is showing 100% disk utilization and due to this system performance is badly affected. Actually Apps server is having only one disk c drive and OS as well as SAP Application sits on the same disk. other apps servers are also having the same configuration of one disk. For all apps server we are using Windows NT and CI is on HPUX platform. How to resolve this issue?
    Pls help
    Regards,
    Prashant

    Hi Prashant,
The High Disk Utilisation indicate quite a few things lets discuss one by one.
    1. Here i could suspect the DB time may be high and i think there would be presence of expensive sql statements, so just check in st04.
    2. If you have Oracle Database then there is a chance of I/O bottleneck.
In the oracle session the I/O section is broken into subsections as
    follow:
High Average Response Time per Read Request
High Average Response Time per Commit
High Average Response Time per Buffer Busy Wait
High Number of Waits for Free Buffers
High Number of Waits for Buffers being written to Disk
High Number of Space Waits for the Log Buffer
    File System Response Times
So check the above mentioned part providers.
    3. In the operating system monitor of the database server also we can  find
the  high numbers of I/O wait. This value indicates problems in I/O. So check on this.
    4. And at last do monitor SM66 and if possible trace through st05 then we can
narrow down the problem why its going for Disk utilisation regularly. Try to find out the Report Name as well.
Finally analys the subsystem using external tools and still the problem is not getting solved the get in conatct with thehardware vendor of th I/O sub system.
    Thank you,

    Hi Ajay,
As your description, you come across the login timeout issue in database mirroring. This issue could occur due to the network errors, such as TCP link time-outs, packet errors. Besides the link (Mirroring time out) from SequelMate, I recommend you to check
if there is any packet loss or errors in your network connection.
Before detecting packet errors, you could enable a hidden setting in Windows to show you any possible errors with your connection and make a quick registry change as the following steps.
    1. Press Win key+R to bring up the Run box and type regedit to launch the Windows registry editor.
    2. Navigate to the following registry location:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network\Connections\StatMon
If the StatMon key is not there, right click on Connections, select New -> Key and enter the value as StatMon.
    3. Inside the StatMon key, set the ShowLanErrors DWORD value as 1 if it’s already there. If ShowLanErrors is not there, right click on StatMon and select New -> DWORD value. Set the DWORD value name as ShowLanErrors. Double click on ShowLanErrors and
set the value data as 1.
    4. Open Network and Sharing Center >> Click Change adapter settings >> Right click your network connection >> Select Status. You will now see an additional Errors information in your connection status below the Sent and Received Bytes.
For more information about the process, please refer to the article:
    https://www.raymond.cc/blog/detect-packet-errors-in-your-network-lan-connection-status/.
If you find packet errors, you could fix the issue according the article:

  • Question about using ZFS root pool for whole disk?

I played around with the newest version of Solaris 10/08 over my vacation by loading it onto a V210 with dual 72GB drives. I used the ZFS root partition configuration and all seem to go well.
After I was done, I wondered if using the whole disk for the zpool was a good idea or not. I did some looking around but I didn't see anything that suggested that was good or bad.
I already know about some the flash archive issues and will be playing with those shortly, but I am curious how others are setting up their root ZFS pools.
Would it be smarter to setup say a 9gb partition on both drives so that the root ZFS is created on that to make the zpool and then mirror it to the other drive and then create another ZFS pool from the remaining disk?

Just a word of caution when using ZFS as your boot disk. There are tons of bugs in ZFS boot that can make the system un-bootable and un-recoverable.Can you expand upon that statement with supporting evidence (BugIDs and such)? I have a number of local zones (sparse and full) on three Sol10u6 SPARC machines and they've been booting fine. I am having problems LiveUpgrading (lucreate) that I'm scratching my head to resolve. But I haven't had any ZFS boot/root corruption.

its going back and forth between me and operations , I aske them to load the package but still the script fails. Is there any way to confirm whether the package is loaded , like the below script

  • The root cause for the case that "cannot close labview-generated exe file"

Hi All, I have a big program including a lot of things. When I converted it to an exe file, it cannot be closed properly. I used to load the dynamic vi in this program and cannot close it by clicking "X" of the window. Now I have removed that dynamic load but still cannot close the exe. Could anyone give me some advice? Thank you!

Hi Freelance_LV, thank you for your advise, here is a program for a USB dongle. Here are the answers:
    for now, questions:
    1. how are you closing the EXE? Panel close (X) on the top right corner/stop or exit button on the GUI?
[A] I use (X) on the top right corner but it did not work. But when I use exit button on the GUI it worked.
    2. Or are you using a FP Close invoke node?
    [A] No
3.how are you handling the event for Panel close or for Stop/exit button?
[A] events are inside a sequence frame
how many loops are running in parallel inside the EXE?
[A] It is hard to tell. I am not the original creator of this code, but the main structure is this: a big "for" loop, inside there are some sequence frame, and some events in one of the frame.
how are you stopping those loops when the panel is closed or a Stop/Exit button is pressed.
[A] the main loop inlcudes some events, sequence frame, and something like this. And there is a subvi from some previous people's work to close USB.
have you checked if all the loops are closing when you stop the EXE?
[A] Sorry I don't know how to check all the loops are closed.
does this work well when you run the source code?
[A] yes source code can be always be closed well.
have you checked for any errors when yuo stop your EXE?
[A] sorry I don't know how to check for errors?
when you say it cannot be closed properly, there could be two things:
    1. the front panel/GUI does not close and it stays there. you cannot perform any GUI actions, or it seems to have hung.
[A] Yes GUI still there. But cannot perform any GUI actions.
    2. the GUI closes but you can still it in the task bar below, you will have to use the Task manager to force close the executable.
    [A] Not this case.
    Thank you very much!

  • Disk utilization 100% for very long time - ntoskrnl.exe

I have HP ProBook 4530s running Windows 8.1 Pro x64. Until recently it worked without any problem but since last week disk utilization has been constantly 100% immediately after laptop has been turned on and I have logged on with my domain user account (this
morning 100% disk utilization lasted for almost half an hour). In task manager ntoskrnl.exe is the one who is killing my hard disk. Is there any official Microsoft solution for this - I definitely want to avoid reinstalling Windows from scratch. I saw on net
this was almost common bug in Windows 8.1 but without any solution working 100%.

In order to diagnose your problem you will need to download and install the below
Install the WPT (Windows Performance Toolkit)
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=30652
Help with installation (if needed) is here
When you have, open an elevated command prompt and type the following
WPRUI.exe (which is the windows performance recorder) and check off the boxes for the following:
First level triage (if available), CPU usage, Disk IO.
If your problem is not CPU or HD then check off the relevant box/s as well (for example networking or registry)  Please configure yours as per the below snip
    Click Start
Let it run for 60 secs or more and save the file (it will show you where it is being saved and what the file is called)
Zip the file and upload to us on Onedrive (or any file sharing service) and give us a link to it in your next post.

  • Windows 8.1 running extremely slow with high disk utilization

My recently purchased Toshiba laptop with Windows 8.1 with 16 GB and I7 processor takes 3 minutes to start new programs. Running programs like Word, PowerPoint, Excel, PDF reader, etc stop in their track with every few minutes and show a circling
cursor. Task Manager shows 100% Disk Utilization all the time.
I ran McKAfee as well as Kaspersky to see if this was a virus/Trojan issue. Both came up with nothing.
At this point the laptop (though spanking new) is completely USELESS and I have no hopes of using it !!!!!
I noticed from many forums that I am not the only one facing this issue. The complaint count for this issue is growing in multitudes.
    Please help!

    Try these steps.
    Open task manager
Click on processes tab. You can see all the apps and processes that are consuming memory.
Click on top of column showing the memory. This will arrange them in ascending or descending order of how much memory is consumed.
Find the ones which is consuming maximum memory
Uninstall if you don’t need the program or app. Re-configure or re-install the software or app if it is an important one.
    Hope it helps.

  • Grid Control showing excessive amount of disk utilization.

    Hi Folks,
I understand that Oracle doesn't support their products 100% on non Oracle VMs, but I thought I might take a stab at it.
I decided to stick with a simple installation of Oracle Grid Control running on a Windows 2003 R2 32 bit os, here are the steps I took.
    1. Run Guest OS Windows 2003 R2 32 bit on a Windows 2008 x64 running Hyper-V (Yes I know why not EL5 running XEN, long story)
    2. Install Grid Control with Database and Agent versions 10.2.0.2.1
    3. Patch agent and oms to 10.2.0.5.0
    4. Some minor issues, but managed to get by those.
    - First off EM Website shows down, got to take a look at that, probably need to fix the beacon, not sure!
    Problem:
    - Grid shows that the host running em is over 100% disk utilization.
    - According to Metalink this is a known bug in Windows 2000 Performance Counters (not 2003?)
    - More specially Microsoft KB article Q310067.
    - Metalink Doc Id: 303788.1
    - Note, I'm running 2003 on a Hyper-V Guest, so anything can go wrong!
    The specific error is:
    Metric               Disk Device Busy (%)
    Disk Device               0 C:
    Severity               Critical
    Alert Triggered          Jun 3, 2009 7:57:54 PM

    Acknowledged          No
    Acknowledged By     n/a
Message               Disk Utilization for 0 C: is 587.86%, crossed warning (80) or critical (95) threshold.
    More info:
    - Guest is running on a Dual Quad Core Xeon System with 16 GB of RAM
    - Guest has dedicated 4096MB of ram
    - Guest has dedicated 2 CPUS
    - Guest is configured with a Virtual Disk (specifically partition c:\) to be on local Hyper-V disk array
    - Windows 2008 Hyper-V host disk array is in a RAID 5 configuration running 10k SAS drives
    - Windows 2008 Hyper-V host utilization is literary at most 5% (current is 1%)
    - Windows 2008 Hyper-V disk utilization according to graphs is showing 100KB/s usage (less than 1%)
Temporary solution is to turn off the metric, but not sure if that's such a good idea.
    - Note that 11g EM and 10g EM running on Hyper-V server had the same issue.
    - Note that 11g EM and 10g EM running without visualization had no issues.
    Any thoughts?

It may be related to Bug 8677212: BACKUP INFORMATION FOR SOME DATABASES SHOWS INCORRECTLY
Although bug info says it for HP-UX, I've also seen the same problem on Grid Control 10.2.0.5 running on Solaris.
You may want to apply 10.2.0.5.4 Grid Control Patch Set Update (PSU) [ID 1139563.1] to fix it.

  • To cancel logs in SM35 and find the root cause

    Hi,
The role "PM****" is creating lot of sessions with the same session name and each session has hundreds of logs everyday in SM35. The logs is all about scheduling maintenance plans. There are hundreds of maintenance plans scheduling logs everyday. Can anyone help me how to find the root cause for this problem and stop the logs being generated in SM35?

    Hi,
When you schedule RISTRA20 (transaction IP30) there are options for 'log control', check these and decide what level of logging you require.

    @Zue ,
Hello and thank you for posting on the HP support forums.  Here are a couple of links that may assist you with your issue.
The first one was found here on the HP support forums. Originally posted by @finder070 .
In order to know which process is utilizing the Hard Disk on Windows 8, I would suggest you to try the following steps.
    a.     Open Task Manager and click on Details tab.
    b.     Right click the columns headers and click "Select Columns".
    c.     From the "Select Columns" window, check: I/O Reads, I/O Writes, I/O read bytes, I/O write bytes and then click OK.
    d.     Now the columns will be added to the view and will display how much each process is utilizing from the hard disk.
    e.     Sort by I/O read bytes or I/O write bytes by clicking on the column header to see which process is utilizing the HD most.
Try the following methods and check if it helps.
    Method 1:
I would suggest you to increase this virtual memory and check if it helps.
Windows8 automatically manages virtual memory and paging file size by default. The virtual memory set by default is approximately 70% of the recommendation.
You need to increase this virtual memory. Make it equivalent to your RAM size for the initial size and twice of the initial size in maximum size and make sure you have the same amount of free space in your hard drive in each drive.
    a.     Press windows + R key from the keyboard.
    b.     Select the option Control Panel and All control panel items then System.
    c.     Click on Advanced system settings.
    d.     Under performance, click on settings.
    e.     Go to Advanced tab, Under Virtual memory, click on Change.
    f.      UN-check "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives" check box.
    g.     Select your windows drive (where OS is installed).
    h.     Click on Custom size radio button.
    i.      Set Initial size equivalent to your RAM size in MB.
    j.      Set Maximum size to twice of your RAM size in MB.
    k.     Click on Set.
    l.      Click on OK thrice.
    m.   Restart your system.
    Method 2:
I would suggest you to boot the computer in Safe mode and check if the issue persists.
Safe mode starts Windows with a limited set of files and drivers. Startup programs don't run in safe mode, and only the basic drivers needed to start Windows are installed.
Windows Startup Settings (including safe mode)
If the issue does not persist in safe mode, then perform a clean boot to check if any third party application is causing the issue, as clean boot helps in eliminating software conflicts.
How to troubleshoot problems using clean boot in Windows: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
Note: Once you are done with the troubleshooting, perform the steps in “How to reset the computer to start as usual after troubleshooting with clean boot “to reset computer as usual.

    Dear friends
We have problems of performance with the system SAP (HP-UX with Oracle 10.2)

    Hi
we have similar problem few weeks ago. we are using HPUX 11.23 and Oracle 9.2.0.6.
many reason can cause this problem :
    -  write process (mainly) -- and read process too, that is not separated to some logical volume (or volume groups) but concentrated in one logical volume (or one volume groups). in this case write process will hit only in one LV ( or VG). to solve this, you must distribute write process into several LVs (or several VGs) so writer process will write evenly to the datafile in several locations. the same way when reading process from several LVs (or VGs) compared with reading in one LV (or one VG).
    - bottleneck in your I/O. you must discuss with your hardware vendor and storage vendor, if there is some bottleneck that causing this.
what have happened to us is broken index of the most table we have caused by system restore few weeks before. after we are doing index for suspected tables, our utilization in decreased.
    we are using command :
    sar -d 5 5
    to monitor disk utilization
and maybe nfile parameter (sum of files opened by OS at the same time) is useful to be monitored, using command :
    sar -v 5 5
    to monitor nfile parameter.
    hope it help you
