Run Aperture and iPhoto on an external drive and edit from laptop?

Can I run iphoto and Aperture on an external hard drive, like a file server?  Can I store pics on the external hard drive and edit using iphoto or aperture on the external hard drive from a laptop ?  How do I make this work?
HELP!  I'm maxed out!

Hello Laura,
what is it, that you want to achieve?
Move the Aperture Library to an external drive to free space on your laptop?
or do you want to share your Aperture Libray between your machines and access it in parallel on a network volume?
The option "1" is easy to achieve, the option "2" is not supported by Aperture; Aperture (and iPhoto) are single User programs, see this:
Aperture: Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library:http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3252
To move your library (or parts of your library) to an external drive you have two options:
move the complete libary using the finder to a local, external, MacOSX formatted drive,
or turn your library into a "referenced" library: relocate the master image files to the external drive, but keep  the Library itself (much smaller now) on your laptop. This way you can browse your images and rate them, use them as screensaver, even if the external drive is not connected.
Regards
Léonie
P.S. the same (*** grano salis) holds for iPhoto; you can move the library, or your libraries, to an external drive using the Finder; you can make the iPhoto Library referenced, but referenced libraries are much better supported in Aperture, for Aperture has been designed in espacially to support huge, distributed libraries - in iPhoto I found it it safer to have several smaller libraries than to have one huge, referenced library - that was one of  the reasons I moved from iPhoto to Aperture.

How do you move itunes and iphoto to an extrernal drive, and have them still recognized on the computer.

Step 1 - copy the relevant folders to your external drive.
For iTunes, that would be yourusername/Music/iTunes (and everything underneath it, exactly as is).
For iPhoto that would be yourusername/Pictures/iPhoto Library
Step 2 - next time you start iTunes (and iPhoto) hold down the Option key while you click the application icon.  You will get a question box that will allow you to point iTunes (and iPhoto) to the new location on your external drive.
Step 3 - after verifying that everything is working correctly with the libraries on your external drive, delete them from your internal drive.  Be sure to empty the trash.
As always, it is best practice to always have a backup copy of your data ... just in case something goes wrong.

  • I backed up my iPhoto onto an external drive and something happened to the file...help me please!!

I recently needed to re-install lion on my Macbook Air and neede to backup my iphoto library. To do this I copied the iphoto icon found in the pictures folder and pasted it onto my external hard drive. As I understand it, i should only find a single file (iphoto libarary) on my external hard drive. However, it seems that the file was split into a bunch of folders (as shown below):
the two iphoto icons you see in the folder I tiny...while my picture libary was a rather massive file. I don't understand what happened! The worst thing is that I cleared my computer before checking this file so this is all I have left of my old iphoto library. Does anybody know how to fix the problem or at least can explain me the problem so I don't do this in the future. Thanks for your help!!!

What is the format of your external hard drive? It should be formatted for OS X Extended (journaled).  It appears that the format does not support the Unix package and has removed the package leaving only the contents.
If that's the only copy of the library that you have you can try creating a folder in the Pictures folder of your Mac Air titled iPhoto Library.  Then drag all of the items on the EHD into it.  Launch iPhoto with the Option key depressed and select that library to top.  Hopefully all necessary files will be there and you'll have the library back.
If that doesn't work create a new, empty library and import the Masters folder into it.  That will give you the same Events that you had previously but none of the edited versions, albums, books, etc.

  • Running Apple TV off of an external drive?

Can you run the Apple TV off of an external drive with out having to run you itunes? I have a laptop that I am trying to keep all of my music and video on an external drive instead of the laptop harddrive.

    Buzz.
External drives can be connected and used in a number of ways.
Connection can be achieved either as an external device to your mac/pc or as a network drive, which can be achieved either through an extreme, a genuine network drive or even I believe with a direct connection to the ethernet port on the tv (with hacks).
Consensus seems to favour keeping the itunes database files in their default location.
If you choose to copy files to your itunes folder in your itunes prefs and let itunes organise your library for you, you will use the external HD for all your media and when it is unavailable so will all your media. You could also organise the library yourself and choose just to keep large movie files on your ext HD, this would mean you can still play non movie files in itunes on your laptop when it is used on it's own, but need to connect the drive for your movies.

  • HT4236 I've run out of room on my hard drive. I bought an external drive and exported all my albums to the external drive then deleted the albums from iPhoto. I want to sync both from my ext drive and new albums in iPhoto. No dice. Help!

I've run out of room on my hard drive. I bought an external drive and exported all my albums to the external drive then deleted the albums from iPhoto. I want to sync both from my ext drive and new albums in iPhoto. My photos on the devices get wiped out when I sync to iPhoto since I deleted all the albums. But when I sync to my hard drive (where I maintained the album structure) the photos are copied to my iPad but lose all the hierarchy and folder structure. Now I have to scroll through thousands of photos to try to find the one I'm looking for. Before I sync any more devices I want to know the following: 1) can I restore the album structure on my iPad by using the photo cache? 2) is there a way to sync both new iPhoto albums AND pictures in the folders in my hard drive? And 3) how can I keep the photo hierarchy structure from my hard drive intact on my devices?

    Don't do that.
Copy /Photos/Photo library/ to the external.
    Hold Option and launch iPhoto.
Select Choose library and select the Photo library you copied to the external.

  • How to run iphoto 08 off external drive?

Hi - I'm trying to clear space on my 60 gig power book g4 and was wondering if I can run iphoto off an external drive (where I would house many - but not all - photos). Currently, copying the photos to the drive loses all the iphoto info. Thanks for any help - and I'm open to suggestions as to other methods to clear off hard drive. (Have the same with itunes - I lose all the info when I "copy" files to the external drive). Thanks!

Quit iPhoto and drag your iPhoto library to the external drive (just one big drag - do not drag components)
Then launch iPhoto while depressing the option (alt) key and point use the select library option to point to the external drive - verify your library on the external drive by using it for a while and then you can delete the iPhoto library on your internal drive or you can switch back to it and delete some photos by using iPhoto to move them to the iPhoto trash and emptying the iPhoto trash
DO NOT delete photos or otherwise modify your iPhoto Library using the finder or you will corrupt your library and lose data
You may find that iPhoto library manager is useful in managing multiple libraries - http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/

  • I have my iphoto library on an external drive, but it filled up.  Can I have another library in another external drive and use them both?

I have old pictures in my external drive that I filled up.  I would like to make another iphoto library in a new external drive and have this one for new pictures.  Can I do that? And how will I be able to see my old pictures on my older external drive? My iphoto is 9.5.1.

Yes.  Another way to switch between libraries is with this menu in iPhoto:

I have just installed Photoshop Elements for a MAC. MY photos were in iPhoto, I have 47,000 pictures and my drive on my Mac laptop is not large enough. I store my photos in iPhoto on an external drive. Can I store all my photos on an external drive when using Photoshop Elements? If so, in what format should they be stored in? I do I move them from iPhoto to the new storage location? How do I call them up in organizer? And how do I call them up to Edit? I do not want to store any pictures on my Apple Mac laptop. I want to store pictures on several external devices.

Yes you can store images on an external hard dive and have them referenced in Organizer. It’s best to export copies to separate folders/subfolders and that will ensure iPhoto does not get corrupted.
Alternatively you could continue to use iPhoto with the Elements Editor set up in the iPhoto prefs as your external editing app. Then there is no need to use Organizer and no need to duplicate your images.
You can then call up photos directly from iPhoto as normal with the additional option e.g.
Double-click on a thumbnail to edit in iPhoto editor.
Control (right) - click on a thumbnail to edit in the elements app.

  • Is there a way to install Windows (with programs) on an external drive and run it from the Pro?

I have a 1TB Seagate Goflex that I am using to backup the Mac, but I want to partition it and run Windows and Windows Apps from it, rather than risk my HDD.  Does anyone have any experience doing that or have any ideas on how it might be done?  I am willing to risk the Seagate external drive, but not the laptop.

    Bob,
you could put a virtualizer such as VirtualBox or Parallels Desktop on the external drive, and install Windows and Windows apps in the virtualizer.

  • Easy question I'm sure. imac hard full (500gb) mostly from iphoto. no capacity left. what are my options? I've thought of an external drive of 1tb and then a 2nd external drive of 3tb to back up both???? please help.

Those are the options - more space is more space.
Moving the iPhoto Library is simple:
Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

The TIme Machine volume does not have that checkbox.
I think the issue is with your Finder...
Go to Finder "Go" menu hold the option key and choose Library. Then go to Preferences trash these files:
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
Then, restart, or log out and in again.
(You will have to reset a few finder prefs the way you like them.)

  • When I try to drag and drop my photos in iPhoto to an external drive (for backup or to transfer them to my other Mac) only some will transfer.  If I copy

When I try to drag and drop my photos in iPhoto to an external drive (for backup or to transfer them to my other Mac) only some will transfer.  If I copy and paste, the same thing happens.  The photos are all taken with the same camera, but some will not transfer.  It tells me right away - for example, I'll "grab" 3500 photos to drag and move, and the red ball will tell me it's moving 3256 or something.  If I use the copy function instead - copy 3500 photos, it will show in Finder that I can paste 3256 or whatever. This happens on my iMac as well as my MacBook Pro.  It started recently and I've never had this before.  Any thoughts?  Thank you!

Are you able to use the File ➙ Export ➙ File Export menu to export  the photos into a folder on the EHD?

  • External drive and iphoto help

hi i was uploading pictures into iphoto witch is on my external drive and i accidentally unpluged the drive while it was uploading the files and now everything is screwed up this is the massage i get when i try and open iphoto from this drive The iPhoto Library is on a locked volume. Relaunch iPhoto when the volume has read/write accees or relaunch iPhoto with <option> key held down any ideas please help
imac intel Mac OS X (10.4.4)

Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and point it at the Library on the external.
If that doesn’t open then you have damaged the Library.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    2. Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 6* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Rolls and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Roll Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.
