RunInstaller fails Installing Oracle 9i R2 on SuSE 8
For testingpurposes I try to install Oracle 9i R2 on a intel-P4 box running SuSE 8.0
with 768MB physical Mem, 1G Swap,
Kernel 2.4.18-64GB-SMP, glibc-2.2.5-38, java version "1.3.1_02"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.3.1_02-b02)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.3.1_02-b02, mixed mode),
I also installed the orarun.rpm which sets the appropriate environment.
After starting the runInstaller script as oracle-user from a shell, the Java Installer starts with some font-errors:
Font specified in font.properties not found [--symbol-medium-r-normal--*-%d-*-*-p-*-adobe-fontspecific]
But the installer starts up and seams to work properly until it beginns loading the list of installable Products from products.jar. At about 40% the loading stops and I get the message:
Exception in thread "main"
on my console. The only way to continue at this point is to exit the installer.
I tried different settings for $LANG including unset $LANG and different settings for -mx in oraparam.ini with no effect.
Did anyone have the same Problem or does anyone know the reason of this error?

Hi,
I got the solution ;-)
My problems seem to bee caused by a obvisuously buggy/incompatible version of JRE in oracle's installationfileset.
I resolved the Problem by editing the JRE_LOCATION-variable in Disk1/install/linux/oraparam.ini (see below) to point to the root of my own local installation of Java 2 (java version "1.3.1_02" Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.3.1_02-b02)).
start of the original file:
[Oracle]
DISTRIBUTION=TRUE
SOURCE=../../stage/products.jar
LICENSE_LOCATION=
JRE_LOCATION=../../stage/Components/oracle.swd.jre/1.3.1.0.0/1/DataFiles/Expanded/jre/linux
OUI_LOCATION=../../stage/Components/oracle.swd.oui/2.2.0.12.0/1/DataFiles/Expanded
JRE_MEMORY_OPTIONS=" -mx200m"
modified version:
[Oracle]
DISTRIBUTION=TRUE
SOURCE=../../stage/products.jar
LICENSE_LOCATION=
JRE_LOCATION=/usr/lib/SunJava2-1.3.1/jre
OUI_LOCATION=../../stage/Components/oracle.swd.oui/2.2.0.12.0/1/DataFiles/Expanded
JRE_MEMORY_OPTIONS=" -Xmx300m"
After this change everything worked (besides some minor problems with the installed demo-database).

Installing Oracle 9i R2 on SuSE 8.2 Pro
I am trying to install Oracle 9i Release 2 on SuSE 8.2 Pro.
I receive the following error message in the Universal Installer after selecting General Purpose as the Database Configuration:
"Thrown when the IP address of a host cannot be determined"
Selecting Retry or Continue just rethrows the same error.
I have completed the Tasks to Perform as root User and Tasks to Perform as the oracle User as outlined in the Installation Guide.
Any help in resolving this error would be appreciated.Hi,
I got the solution ;-)
My problems seem to bee caused by a obvisuously buggy/incompatible version of JRE in oracle's installationfileset.
I resolved the Problem by editing the JRE_LOCATION-variable in Disk1/install/linux/oraparam.ini (see below) to point to the root of my own local installation of Java 2 (java version "1.3.1_02" Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.3.1_02-b02)).
start of the original file:
[Oracle]

JRE_LOCATION=../../stage/Components/oracle.swd.jre/1.3.1.0.0/1/DataFiles/Expanded/jre/linux
OUI_LOCATION=../../stage/Components/oracle.swd.oui/2.2.0.12.0/1/DataFiles/Expanded
JRE_MEMORY_OPTIONS=" -mx200m"
modified version:
[Oracle]
DISTRIBUTION=TRUE
SOURCE=../../stage/products.jar
LICENSE_LOCATION=
JRE_LOCATION=/usr/lib/SunJava2-1.3.1/jre
OUI_LOCATION=../../stage/Components/oracle.swd.oui/2.2.0.12.0/1/DataFiles/Expanded
JRE_MEMORY_OPTIONS=" -Xmx300m"
After this change everything worked (besides some minor problems with the installed demo-database).

I am not oracle expert. I think the installation itselft was ok, but maybe the database
does not start correctly.
my configuration is like this:
cat /etc/sysconfig/oracle-xe
#This is a configuration file for automatic starting of the Oracle
#Database and listener at system startup.It is generated By running
#'/etc/init.d/oracle-xe configure'.Please use that method to modify this

any idea what's wrong here ?
Markusthanks. I added my username to the dba group and also tried the oracle user.
in both cases I still get this error:

You got these errors because runInstaller can not start the GUI. There are 2 solutions, you can choose one:
1. logout Gnome/Kde, login as oracle user, and run runInstaller again.
2.open a new root terminal,
a) run "xhost +" as root.
b) run "su - oracle" switch to oracle
c) run "export DISPLAY=:0.0"
d) then run "./runInstaller" again.
cheers.

The problem of installing oracle database 9.2.0 on Redhat 7.2
Hi, there,
I meet an error when I want to run runInstaller to install oracle database 9.2.0 on Redhat 7.2 at the Oracle Database Configuration Assistant step:
ORA-03113:end-of-file on communication channel.
the installer report every other things are installed successfully except Database Configuration Assistant. but after I try to connect to database using sqlplus:
sqlplus /nolog
connect / as sysdba
after a very long responding time, there is an interior error. I don't know how to fix it. do I need reinstall the oracle or mannully configure the database? how to do that? my machine is P2 266 with 128M memory. the harddisk is 30GB. I don't know if this problem is caused by memory limitation?
besides, who knows any other forums or website about oracle database installed on linux? I found there is very limit resource about this content on oarcle website.
any hint will be great appreciated!It could be because of the memory. Oracle 9.x requires 512 MB minimum on Linux. Also the only Red Hat Oracle is now supporting is Advanced Server. But there are workarounds.
There is an excellent web site for installing Oracle on Linux, but it has been down for the last week or two. But try it maybe next week:

I have installed ORACLE 9i R2 on SuSE with no errors.And I have configured my OMS with no errors.But when I use "oemctl start oms" to start OMS,it said "Time out to start oms,......checking oem.nohup".I opened the oem.nohup,it said /usr/bin/nice /opt/oracle/product/9.2.0/bin/oemLaunchOms:Bat interpreter,No such file or directory.But I can find nice and oemLaunchOms in they directory.Somebody can help me?
Well, what about the listener and the instance ? are they running ? If not, plz start it first, before you start OMS. You have to start the listener first, then the instance. Do not do it vice versa or the OMS will give you an error.
Hope this help

Oracle 9i installation on SuSE 7.3 freezes
Hello-
just tried to install Oracle 9i on my SuSE 7.3 Linux box. After
the software installation I tried to create a new database
with "dbca", but when Oracle starts to create the database it
freezes the whole system. I can't even move the mouse cursor
then.
What's wrong?
Thanks in advance.
WojtekSome screensavers on KDE on SuSE 7.3 freezes; Oracle9i behaves
erratically on my incarnation of 7.3 during installation. I've
had it lock up the session, log off the session, and tank the
whole computer. All while trying to install the database
product.
I have not tried the various tips and such found here yet.
Most Linux installations allow multiple window managers,
selectable at logon; perhaps any KDE issues can be circumvented
by using a less complex wm...? -
