Running MacOS 7-8-9 in MacOS 10.6

Hello. Does anybody know how to run MacOS 7, 8, or 9 in MacOS 10.6? I have a couple of important applications that were designed for MacOS 7-9 but that will not run in MacOS 10.6. Thanks.

but I suggest you either look for more modern programs that do what you need or get a second hand PPC mac (they can be had extremely cheaply) and use it to run whatever OS version you need directly.

If your PowerBook shipped with a separate Mac OS 9 installation CD, insert it into your computer and restart with the C key held down. Once the CD has started up, double-click the icon of the hard disk and check whether the folder System:Library:CoreServices has a smiling Mac icon; if so, drag the item Finder onto the desktop. In either case, install Mac OS 9, and then select the Finder item if you moved it earlier and choose Put Away from the Special menu.
If your PowerBook did not ship with a separate Mac OS 9 CD, which is the default on a 12-inch PowerBook, use the computer's original disks to add the Classic environment.
A retail Mac OS 9 CD will not boot any PowerBook G4 except for the original model, which will run from the universal Mac OS 9.21 CD.

I am running Firefox 3.6.13 on MacOS X 10.6.6 and cannot edit bookmarks saved under folders on the bookmarks toolbar, by right clicking on them.

This problem concerns the bookmarks I have saved under folders that are visible in the Bookmarks Toolbar just under the URL window on Firefox. On my firefox browser in Windows XP I can expand one of these folders, right click on a bookmark underneath and I get the properties option which allows me to modify the Name or Location of the Bookmark. Unfortunately I cannot do the same on Firefox running on my Macbook Pro.

If it doesn't work with the Bookmarks toolbar then you can try to do it in the Library (Bookmarks > Organize Bookmarks).

Transfering mailbox from Outlook Express on MacOS 9 to Mail on MacOS-X

I have an instance of MS Outlook Express running on a MacOS 9 PowerMac G3. I want to transfere the mailbox (all archived e-mails and the mailbox folder structure) to a new computer, a current iMac running MacOS-X and Mail app.
How do I do this?

Can't use Migration Assistant to go from MacOS X Server to standard MacOS X

I have a MacBook Pro with 10.5.6. At one point, I installed Mac OS X server over the standard 10.5.6 and used it that way for awhile. However there were some shortcomings to using Mac OS X Server on this machine, so I did a full bootable back-up to another drive using SuperDuper and did an erase and install of standard 10.5.6. Here's where the fun starts.
The migration assistant, both during install and now that I'm fully updated, refuses to see the back-up drive with Server 10.5.6 on it, even though I can boot off of it and it appears perfect. I desperately need to migrate my documents and settings off of that backup drive. It appears to be an issue specifically with migrating from Server, since I've done this sort of thing multiple times before. Does migration assistant not work with migrating from Mac OS X Server drives? Or at least when migrating from Server to standard Mac OS X?

MA will transfer your current system preferences to the SSD regardless of where they come from.
BTW, you will need a special mounting sled for the SSD. You should find them at OWC.

ASDM 7.1 fails to start on MacOS

I have an ASA-5505 which I have been managing using ASDM from a PC and a Mac.
I just happens that the Mac has not been used in a little while and when I tried to use ASDM on it, it fails.
I've had a trawl through various posts and release notes (after updating various components in the process, incl Java with all the diabling/security updates of late) but am still having the problem and this is where I'm at:
- the ASA runs v8.4(2) and ASDM 7.1(1)52
- release notes state that ASDM 7.1 should work on Java 7 on Windows 7 and MacOS 10.7
- ASDM starts fine on my Windows 7 PC running Java 1.7.0_13
- I am also running Java 1.7.0_13 on MacOS 10.7.5
- on MacOS, ASDM starts, asks for credentials, download/refreshes the cached app... and then crashes with the following exception message:

The root cause of the issue seems to be that a Java class called apple.laf.AquaTableHeaderUI is not found...
Now, I don't know much about Java, but that seems to be an Apple UI related class - I presume that it would be good to use this to give ASDM a more native look and feel, but why on earth is there no fallback? or am I missing something?
Any information or help on the matter will be very welcome... even if it's only to say that you are experiencing the same issue!

I had exactly the same problem on a Mac mini running OS X 10.9.3 and 10.9.4 with Java 1.7.0_60. I spent any amount of time flushing caches, deleting my ~/.asdm directory and re-installing the dm-launcher.dmg file.
I eventually got it running by installing Apple's Java for OS X 2014-001 from http://support.apple.com/kb/dl1572, deleting my ~/.asdm directory, using the Java Control Panel to delete all cached files and installed apps, then reinstalling from a fresh download of the dm-installer.dmg file.
Bit of a blunderbus approach, I know, but it worked for me. I think the Apple Java installation was what tipped the balance, but who knows, as it really ought to have been there already, shouldn't it?!

I just checked the Software Installations history on my Macbook Air on which ASDM has been working just fine. It had Java for OS X 2013-005, which is the predecessor of 2014-001, and I remember having to install it to sort out compatibility problems between Java 6, Java 7 and ASDM 7.1. The Mac mini, on the other hand, had Java for OS X 2012-005, which I suspect is the root of my problems.
You can find out which Java you have by running "java -version" from a Terminal, and cross-check against the table on https://developer.apple.com/library/mac/technotes/tn2002/tn2110.html.

16:10 screen resolutions with MacOS 9?

I've just connected a PowerMac G4 (AGP 400) with MacOS 9.0.4 to a new LG wide screen LCD display, a 20.1" display that supports natively the 1680x1050 pixel resolution through the VGA connector.
The Monitor control panel lists only regular 4:3 or 5:4 resolutions, like 800x600, 1024x768, 1152x870, 1280x1024, but no chance to see the native resolution. I would connect the display to the computer thru the DVI-ADC connector, but I lack the DVI-ADC adaptor.
Is it a constraint of the graphic chipset? The G4 is equipped with the built-in ATI Rage Pro 128 with 16 MB RAM, with dual display connectors, a standard VGA and a ADC one.
Is there a way to see 1680x1050 with OS 9? I haven't tried the MacOS 9.1 or the MacOS 9.2.2 yet: I really hope such upgrades fix my issue, because I can't afford a 4:3 resolution stretched to 1680 pixels and a 16:10 screen ratio.

much VRAM is necessary to support your monitor's
native 1680 x 1050 resolution in millions of colors,
but I suspect it's more than 16MB. If you reduce the
number of colors in the Monitors control panel to
thousands, are you offered any higher resolutions or
different aspect ratios? If not, your video card may
be too old and inflexible to support your new
monitor. I would call LG's tech support and ask.
I don't believe there is any limitation in OS 9
itself that would cause your problem.
Well, I didn't try to downgrade the color depth, but I will try soon. In past times it was fairly easy to calculate the V-RAM needed to support some pixel resolution, but with all those gigabyted graphic boards, it seems hardly there's still a strict dependency.
1680x1050 million colors needs theoretically only 6,7 MB...

AE won't run on Mac OSX

Try to lauch AE and get an error saying "this version of AE can't run on the current version of MacOS" (I'm running 10.9.1).
The CC app says AE is up to date, yet Version is 12.0.
Searching your site reveals that 12.2.1 is the current version, but there seem to be no way to just update to the current version, since all updates have to be done through the CC app.
Uninstalling and re-isntalling just keeps reisntalling 12.0. Going to the AE page and trying to find a download just keeps shooting me back to the CC app.
Why can't I just download the current version and install it?

I followed your instructions (reluctantly sacrificing all my settings and user data for all my adobe apps), and when I reinstall I still get version 12, not the current version.
I spent half an hour with tech support yesterday only to have them declare that I needed to call back today because the weekend tech support staff wasn't capable of solving the problem.
I searched the forums extemsively before posting my question and found a few threads directly related to my issue, but that just led me to the standalone installer for the update but that fails when I try to install because I have CC installed.
I guess I'll waste another hour and call tech support again, but it sure leaves me pissed off that I can't run an app that I'm paying a monthly fee to use.

Running programs in parallel

i am using bootcamp with windows 7 on one side of it and mac osx on the other
My question is,is it possible to keep 1 programm running on the mac side when running the windows side
ie ,i would like to leave i tunes running on the mac side while i am using the windows side
The reason for the question is i am running 2 apple tvs from the mac side and dont want to interupt them if i decide to go over to the windows side

if you're running windows in BootCamp then your macOS isn't running - so you can't use anything on the Mac side...

Macbook Pro just start to run very slow

Not sure what has happened but my laptop is now extremely slow... with the spinning wheel showing up when clicked on menus or opening folders!!
iv done an update to OSX 10.9.5 but still the same iv check Activity Monitor and cant really see anything which might using up CPU or Memory ? HHD space over 500GB left...

We have an aging white MacBook in our office that we are about to replace with a refurbished MacBook Pro with Retina Display. We have concerns about sharing documents and collections between machines, so we need to keep our software versions the same on both machines (Some software will have to be updated, and since the new laptop will be running MacOS 10.9 Mavericks, we're going to have to look at updating the iMac's operating system and other software.
We like the current Photoshop Elements 8 (with Bridge CS4) on the iMac. We would prefer not to upgrade PSE at this time.
Question: Will PSE 8 / BrCS4 run on MacOS 10.9 Mavericks? Are there any known compatibility issues?

Yes, versions 6 through 12 will work just fine except for a few glitches in PSE 11. It is crucial to delete existing prefs before running PSE on the updated system, though:

And If you are planning to migrate anything from the old computer, I would uninstall PSE before doing the migration. You can never, never move an installed copy of PSE and lift will be simpler if there's nothing there for the migration assistant to pick up and move inadvertently.

I downloaded Firefox 4 for my Mac running MacOS 10.4.11 and replaced my older version (because I didn't understand the meaning of the barred circle) and now cannot use Firefox at all. How do I get the older version back?

When I try to open FF4 I get the message it can't be opened because it is not supported on my architecture. I can't believe no-one else has had this problem. You must have a lot of internet duffers who don't really know what they're doing. I need to get my old version of FF back if I'm going to run it on my computer. I don't understand why an app as widely used as this doesn't have a pre-app that assesses whether one has the architecture to run a new version. You advertisement merely said OS 10, and "all systems". It did not specify a newer MacOS than my 10.4.11. Now I seem to be out of luck and will just use Safari.

Running MacOS 10.6.8 & FF 3.6.17, upgrade popup to 3.6.20 doesn't work (just sits and spins forever) - any suggestions?

I have a MacBook Air running MacOS 10.6.8 and am using FireFox 3.6.17. I get an auto upgrade popup suggesting that I upgrade to 3.6.20. However, when I select to perform the upgrade, the download box comes up and acts like it is downloading, but it never actually downloads the upgrade. I tried version 4.0, but that didn't work right, so I would like to say with version 3.6, but would like the latest upgrades if possible.

Ran the OS X verify and repair util it fixed a fair few permission issues, then tried to add in a 2nd sample in logic - re-indexed still showing the first initial sample.

Also when I do the system update it's not giving me an update for the latest Snow Leopard. How do I remove OSX/FkCodec-A from my Mac mini? I am running Yosemite and the path and file name is /Volumes/macvexe/macvexe.app/Contents/MacOS/mac.installer. Sophos was unble to remove and it will not go to trash.

Sophos found this on my mac mini (early 2009) - OSX/FkCodec-A and could not clean it up. I am running Yosemite 10.10 and the path and filename for this Trojan is /Volumes/macvexe/macvexe.app/Contents/MacOS/mac.installer. Could someone please tell me how to get rid of it as Sophos is unable to remove and Trash can remove it.

How did you originally install iWork on the Mac Pro? was it preinstalled? The machine seems old enough that you should have an original install DVD that came with the mac pro.

To move tables between sheets you can select the table, copy, then paste after activating (by clicking) the destination sheet. If you really mean move, then use the cut command (rather than copy).
To copy... use the menu item "Edit > Copy"
To cut... use the menu item "Edit > Cut"
Then paste in the destination
