Running Photoshop CS4 on macbook?

So I just finished my trial of CS4 for Mac and it seems to run much more efficiently on my macbook than the previous versions. However, I'm not entirely convinced on getting it just yet, since it seems that the GL-enabled options (rotate canvas and clear picture pixels on the in-betweens) didn't work. Anyone know if this was just because it's a trial or if I need to upgrade something on my computer?
If so, what would I need to look into updating?

I'm not too sure about OpenGL.
Howeverm any new applications are seem to be built around efficiency. Except Firefox when Beta5 was the best
Photoshop CS used to eat 1.6GB of ram for example - CS2 barely nibbles 800mb

  • Running Photoshop CS4 on a Windows Desktop PC and A MacBook?

    Hello,
I have a quick question and would really appreciate any help
Last year I bought Photoshop CS4 for Windows and now I'm using it on a Vista desktop computer. When I understand the licence agreement well, I can also install it on a portable computer and use it for my work as long as I don't use it simultaneously on both machines.
Well, my portable computer is a MacBook Pro, running Snow Leopard.
My question: Can I use the software on both machines with the same license key? My plan is to download the mac-version of PS CS4 and use my licence key to activate it... Will this work or is it more complicated and I have to contact the customer service? Or do I need to purchase a new licence for my mac?
I hope you guys can help me - thanks in advance,
    Frank

  • Can't install Photoshop CS4 on Macbook Pro 10.8.3

When I try to install from my original disc, it freezes and stops the install about halfway through.  Any fixes?

    Hi RodWS,
Photoshop CS4 has not been tested and you might face compatibility issues with MAC OS 10.8.3
Please consider upgrading to the latest CS6 version. You can even opt for a monthly subscription for it from Creative Cloud at a very nominal fee.

  • Can I run Photoshop CS4 and CS1 on the same Mac?

I've been building pages for a website on my old Mac with Photoshop CS1 then slicing and optimising them in ImageReady before uploading to the site I'm building in Dreamweaver where I put in the body text.
Recently I upgraded to a newer Mac running Snow Leopard and CS4 where I discovered that ImageReady is now considered a thing of the past. I read that Fireworks and Dreamweaver are now the most sophisticated way to go but after a month perservering with fireworks I'm finding it a very clunky, complicated way to operate. I don't like using it and I hate the prospect of starting over to re-build my existing site.
So... will my CS1 version of Photoshop and Imageready run successfully on Snow Leopard and, if so, can I have two versions of one program loaded on my Mac at once? The aim is to be able to use CS1 for Imageready and revert to CS4 for my usual work.

  • Can I run Photoshop CS4 and CS5 on the same system?

I read somewhere a zillion years ago (right?) that you coould run CS4 and CS5 on the same system but at the time I wasn't even considering it.
Run on the same system - not ness to run at the same time
Or should I install it on a seperate drive (bootable) and go that route. What has everyone found to work and/or not work?
Thanks in advance for your help
    BJ

Yes, you can run CS4 an CS5 on the same computer.  They install in different folders and don't get in each other's way.  As a matter of fact, you will find many posts in this forum from the experts recommending to keep CS4 (or an earlier version) when installing CS5.  This way, there is no danger of losing any older plug-ins you may have that aren't compatible to CS5.
When I installed PS CS5 I had problems with my scanner driver.  Instead of spending loads of time fixing that problem, I just use PS CS4 when I want to spend an afternoon scanning things. I'm not recommending that "lazy man's" solution, but it is an example of how CS4 and CS5 can be used on the same system.

  • Can you run Photoshop CS4 on an iMac?

One TechNote I was just pointed to says you need a PowerPC G5 with multicore Intel Processor.
HUH?! I've always owned iMacs and run a graphic design business with them. I have a brand new 24" iMac with memory upgrades and a top graphics card, but I am having major issues with saving files. (files truncated when trying to reopen).
    Any advice?
Apple thinks it should work, but Adobe?

Those are good ideas, but I have not been saving over a network. I save everything directly to my harddrive.
Also, I did do numerous troubleshooting with an apple technician, trying to find out if there was an error in the hard disk. But since then the computer the problem first showed up on was stolen and I have replaced it with another brand new iMac that is having the same problems!!  I recreated this one from the Time Machine backup of the other one, so perhaps I just carried over the problem. I think the next step is to reinstall the software.
Thanks for trying. Any other ideas? I'll let you know if reinstalling helps.

  • Running Photoshop CS4 (and probably CS5) on the 2010 Mac Mini

I'm looking to buy the new Mac Mini 2010 for use in my work as digital graphics designer. I already considered the base iMac but since I already have a good LCD monitor, keyboard and mouse, all I really need is a good desktop.
I'd like to know if the new setup can handle the load of a 600ppi multi-layered file. I also do digital coloring for comic books in Painter 11 so I'd also like to know if the machine can handle such a load.
Any info will be greatly appreciated.

It can, but a huge thing is how much RAM you have. You will want to get 8 GB if you are dealing with huge files like that. Even with CS5 there is very little real GPU acceleration in anything other then Premiere, so having a midlevel GPU won't really hurt you. The 2nd biggest bottleneck is the HDD. The mini has a 5,400 RPM HDD so loading files will be slower then an iMac with a 7,200 RPM HD. You can upgrade the Mini's HDD to something faster but the iMac being a 3.5" drive vs the 2.5" in the mini will be faster even if both machines have a 7,200 RPM HD. Given all of this if I were you I'd get a mid/high end iMac and if you would rather use your current KB/mouse then sell the new wireless ones that come with the iMac to recoup some of the cost difference. Then hook up your current display as a 2nd. Its so nice to have 2+ displays on a system.
You will spend $1350 or so on a Mini configured this way, and for $1500 you get double the HDD space, faster drive, faster CPU, faster GPU, KB/mouse you can sell, monitor so why not get the iMac. After selling the KB/mouse you will be almost identical price.

  • Transferring Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom from Macbook to new Imac

    Hello all,
I am currently running Photoshop CS4 extended version 11.0.1 and Lightroom version 2.3 on an early Macbook model 1.1, I have the original install disks for Lightroom, but when upgrading to CS4 extended I downloaded the upgrade from the Adobe website. I am receiving a new Imac this month and would like to explore my options for correctly transferring (migrating?) these programs to the new Imac. My search on this forum reveals that migration assistant may not be the best option for these two programs, any insight is appreciated.

LR won't be a problem, just install it on the new computer. As long as you don't use them on both systems at the same time you won't violate the licensing terms.  If you LR was an update you will also need the key from the 1.x version.
For PS CS4 just run it on the MacBook and de-activate it (Help->Deactivate...). Then download the PS CS4 package from Adobe and install it on your new system using the same license keys you used to install it on the MacBook. Since you indicated you upgraded to CS4 (from what version you didn't say) you will need the license key from the original (CS, CS2, CS3??) and the license key to the upgrade to CS4.
After installation of PS CS4 you may also need to manually install updates as it is often the case that the Adobe updater doesn't recognize the fact that updates are available.

  • Photoshop CS4 crash on startup on Snow Leopard 10.6.2

    Hello,
I can't run photoshop cs4 on my macbook: the dock icon jumps for a second and then disappears. I've downloaded the latest photoshop trial, installed it and it still crashes upon startup.
Here are the log messages from Console:

I have white intel macbook, with Snow Leopard 10.6.2 installed.
Also I've noticed in Activity Monitor that photoshop process appears for a second and then disappears. What strange is that "kind" column displays PowerPC instead of Intel or Intel64.... But when I start Adobe Bridge CS4 (which works good) it displays Intel in "kind" column of Activity Monitor.
    Please help...
    Alex.

I had this same problem with Photoshop CS5.  I solved it simply by moving the application from the custom location I had given the Installer, /Applications/Graphics, to /Applications.  Then Photoshop told me it had been moved and I had to update my config.  It then could run.  At this point, I quit and moved the application to my custom location, updated the config again, and it worked from there too.  I suppose it needed to run the first time from /Applications.

  • Photoshop CS4 is unbelievably slow. Downgrade me please.

I'm running Photoshop CS4 on a 2.6 MacBook Pro with 4 Gig of RAM. Everything on this machine runs beautifully, and I rarely, if ever, experience enough lag in any app to become frustrated.
Photoshop CS4 is the only exception.
    Extremely frustrating problems include:
up to 10 second pause before refresh when zooming in and out.
5 to 20 second pauses when selecting/deselecting layers.
stuttering and crippling lag when dragging an image around, especially when zoomed in.
    unresponsive reactions to layer nudging.
anywhere from 10 second to 5 minute (not an exaggeration) pause while saving for web, accompanied by frequent crashes.
all of the above problems are completely random and not consistently reproduceable, though they occur very regularly.
As a professional designer, I've been used to ignoring Photoshop CS3 and concentrating on the work I was doing. This is exactly how a good tool should function. With Photoshop CS4 I spend far more time frustrated and conscious of the unresponsive & clumsy tool than I do paying attention to what I'm trying to do. Apart from being constantly and unbelievably frustrating, it's costing me time, and therefore money, and affecting the quality of my work.
If anyone from Adobe is paying attention here, you should be very worried. I have spent a great deal of energy lately wishing for an alternative to Photoshop. Having customers whose loyalty is based on nothing more than a lack of viable alternatives is a perfect opportunity for a competitor to drink your milkshake, and earn the gratitude of customers like myself. You, the creators of the Quark killer InDesign, should know that very well.
The first Photoshop CS4 update, 11.0.1, solved none of my problems. As a customer who bought CS4 new, and not as an upgrade, I don't have the option of downgrading to CS3, although I would dearly love to. Providing me with a free downgrade wouldn't really solve my problem – Photoshop CS4 would still be painfully slow – but at least I could work in peace again.
    How about it Adobe?
Are you a designer using Photoshop CS4? Tell me about your experiences here:
    http://mattbalara.com/2009/05/downgrade-me-please.html

You can in fact get your money back from Adobe during the first 30 days after buying the software.
Unfortunately, I'm not in a position to comment on the performance of CS4 or any other software on a laptop, but what I can tell you is that CS4 runs very fast and smoothly on my lowly, older machine.
Dual bootable, DP MDD 1.25GHz G4 (2004), maxed out at 2GB of RAM, both Spotlight and Dashboard disabled, Photoshop primary scratch disk on dedicated 160GB internal drive, at least 100GB available on each of the four internal drives, up to 300GB on some.  Counting external FW drives just over 1TB of drive space available.  nVidia GeForce 7800 GS 425MHz 256 MB "mutant" flashed graphics display card. Processor napping enabled through CHUD 3.5.2.  Tiger 10.4.11.  Photoshop 11.0.1.

  • Photoshop CS4 serious dragging bug

I'm running Photoshop CS4 in two different MacBook Pro's unibody, both with 10.6.4 installed, both PSD versions are separate copies with different licenses and both are updated to the latest release, 11.0.2.
In both machines I've experienced a serious dragging issue that so far seems to be related to something in Safari, particularly when I drag an image straight from the browser to the photoshop window. The bug consists of immediately any function that includes dragging something across the screen (painting, scaling, panning, cropping, rotating, you name it) becomes impossible to do, and the screen "stutters" all over the place for several seconds until the issue goes away itself. The problem has become super frequent in one of my computers, the newest one which I mostly use with an intuos 4, the other one I use with an intuos 3, as mentioned before both laptops are unibody, but one i got in december 2008 and the other one in february 2010.
The issue has gotten to the point where it is almost impossible to work with that computer, as it is happening sometimes up to 5 or 6 times each minute.
Any thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

    From the PS CS4 manual:
    Change the Color Picker
Instead of using the Adobe Color Picker, you can choose colors from your computer operating system’s standard Color Picker or from a third party Color Picker.
1 Choose Edit > Preferences > General (Windows) or Photoshop > Preferences > General (Mac OS).
2 Choose a Color Picker from the Color Picker menu, and click OK.
For more information, see your operating system documentation.
Note: To return to the Adobe Color Picker, choose it from the Color Picker menu in the General Preferences.
