Running Slow, Displaying information I can't find...

I have a MacBook Pro and when I run any application it runs slow. At first I thought, 'It is almost full, I should clear it.' I did, about 30 gigs of it but it is still running incredibly slow. I've looked into About This Mac and it says there is 100.27 GB worth of Movies. I have no idea what these movies are but I can't locate them anywhere on my mac. Anything that I did have on my mac I transfered to an external harddrive and had deleted (or so I thought). I've run OmniDiskSweeper but even that can't locate the movies. Aparently there is 56.31 GB worth of Other things on there too! I have it plugged into power but it still runs slow. I've been meaning to take it in to have the battery replaced (or serviced as it has notified me a couple times but just dissapears) as it has done 757 Cycles, which I assume is recharges. Just choosing the Apple logo and then About This Mac takes about 30 seconds per selection. Any gesture takes forever to load as well. Choosing another window take ten to fifteen seconds to swap over. So any selection really takes ten to forty seconds to swap over. I've shut down, and restarted my computer but still no luck. I'm a little confused as the only time I have EVER experienced this - and I don't mean to start any quarrels - was with a Windows computer.
I'll give you an indication of how slow it is. I've opened Safari and have Apple as my home page. Twenty-five minutes have passed by but the loading bar is sitting comfortably with the 'o' in .com. Running pages takes forever to load and so does keynote. As does Word and PowerPoint. I do not know what else to do. I've been cleaning things off and erasing free space, deleting trash and deleting trash securely. I'm at a loss! My MacBook has never run this slow and has been so relaible until this pass couple months. I'm confused. The following is what my Mac is...
MacBook Pro
13-inch, Mid 2009
Version 10.8.4
Processor 2.35 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB
I probably sound like a clueless fool, but I've never had problems like this. Usually I'm the one helping my friend, parents, and other colleagues with computer matters. Any advice and help would be greatly appreciated!

I want to run Apple Hardware Text but can't find it on any CD's.  I bought my iMac in 2009.  It came with 10.4.  Apple Hardware Test is not on the installation disk.  Should I have it?  Where can I find it?  I"m now running 10.7.4.

    The disc plainly state:
To  use the AHT, hold down the D key as the computer starts up.
Works here. However, there was an issue with installing Lion that screwed this process up.
Mount disc 2, run this command in the Terminal app, OPTION-click & hold Finder's Dock icon, and select RELAUNCH:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 1
    That unhides all hidden files/folders.
Now, drill down to /"Applications Install\ Disc"/System/Library/CoreServices/ and drag the .diagnostics folder into your Lion boot volume's /System/Library/CoreServices/ folder. That might require you to authenticate to copy the folder into the CoreServices subfolder.
Run this command to hide the normally hidden files/folders and RELAUNCH the Finder again.
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles 0
This should allow the machine to boot into AHT when restarting and holding down the D key.
If that doesn't do the trick, run this command in the Terminal app:
    sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/CoreServices/.diagnostics
At the Password: prompt, carefully type in your admin password, since nothing shows up on the screen, and hit the return key. Then, try another restart, holding down the D key.

  • My computer says firefix is running....I can not find it and when I click on the icon it will not open. What can I do?

I can not get firefox to open when I click the icon. A box appears and tells me firefix is running but I can not find it anywhere. I have tried to delete it and everything else I can think of and it will not open. Please tell me what I can do.
    Thank you Lisa Brown

I used to have this problem on my old XP computer, too. The easiest way to fix it is to restart your computer. Use Shutdown and restart. This will stop the firefox process that is hanging and won't show up on your screen.
If you are somewhat computer literate, you can look at all your running processes by pressing Ctrl Shift Esc all at once using the three finger salute. Look at the list of processes to find firefox, highlight it, and select end process. Then go back and click on your shortcut to your firefox to regain control and display it on your screen.
Be sure to upgrade to the latest version of firefox, Version 5. It works much better than previous versions.

  • Slow-Start Up and "can not find the server" dialog box

    hi there -
2 year old Ibook G4. When I try to open either Safari or Netscape the "can not find the server" box pops up.. I have a solid connection wi-fi for the wireless signal is on full strength. I have cleared my cache. Also I am experiencing start-ups that are taking 2-3 minutes. The color wheel just keeps spinning. Also, I have done repair and I renewed the DHCD. Not sure what else to do?

as a guess, spinning wheel could be caused by failing hard drive.
often failing hard drives will pass all tests by the utilities.
you may want to back up any important files just in case.
if the iBook boots up from the OS install CD/DVD with no problems, issues could be caused by the corrupted files on the hard drive or failing drive.

  • Random Slow Requests that CFTrace Can't Find

    Description:
I am troubleshooting some slow loading pages and have been getting some interesting and inconsistent results. I'd like some help on how to better troubleshoot the problem, so that I can fix it. I started by looking at database query times, but have ruled it out. Next, I added numerous trace elements to the page in question to see where the slowness is occurring. To my dismay, the slowness occurs only sometimes and at different points in my traces. I'm confused by the results. What can I do to isolate where the problem is happening?
I've renamed my files and traces for anonymity. There is quite a lot of logic happening in the pages I'm running.
Below is some information about my setup. I've added a "Total DB Time" to the standard CF debugging page to try and prove that this is not a slow running database request. The examples below were taken from my local machine with nothing else running on it. I clicked refresh on the same page several dozen times and copied a few of the more interesting results. In reality, the results are very random in appearance. Sometimes I'll get a dozen refreshes that are under 500ms, and sometimes it seems like every request is over 4000ms. Check out the total db time and the trace times.
    Information:
    - Coldfusion 9 (all hot fixes and updates applied)
    - JRUN
    - Default JRE Version
    - Windows 7
    - Apache
    - MySQL
What I have tried without any success:
    - Running the code on numerous computers (at least 5 other computers confirming the same results)
    - Running it on different java versions
    - Running it on Coldfusion 7 MX
    - Running CF on JBoss instead of Jrun
    - Enabling and disabling all database caching
    - Enabling and disabling trusted cache
    - Setting a really high or low total cached query value
    - Enabling and disabling white space management
    - Changing the MySQL JDBC driver

  • I repaired my install of winXPpro and I think I lost all my FF saved passwords and login information. Can I find my info using a hdd undelete program? What filename do I look for?

Can I use an undelete program to recover my FireFox saved login and password information? What filename would I try to search for and where in the directory structure would I look?

You need two files for the passwords, key3.db and signons.sqlite (that file os for Firefox 3.5 and above), those 2 files must be kept together for passwords to work. Those files are stored in the profile folder, for details of how to find it see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
If those files did not exist and you ran Firefox, it would automatically create new copies. The [[username and password not remembered]] article may be of use to you as well.

  • Runs slow & locks up plus can't windows update & upgrade to professional

HP 6250 desktop running windows seven. problems started after replacing hard drive.   Help please.....

Was it running Windows 7 before or after replacing the hard drive?   What hard drive was installed?
Some of the newer AF (advanced format) hard drives use a different sectoring method - which can introduce performance issues on older systems.   Sometimes you can work around this by change the transfer mode in BIOS setup to something different, such as AHCI, etc.
You may not be able to just switch it though - there is a possibility if you do change it - Windows may not be able to load the driver to talk to the hard drive.   I know if you do a web search on changing storage driver mode to AHCI in windows 7 - you can find some tips on how to do it.
Not saying that is the issue you are running into, but search on "performance sector alignment windows 7" and you might find some articles of interest.

Less than 10 to 15% free space can slow the drive down.

  • Runs slow!! i can temporarily speed up by erasing cache, help?!!

recently i saw an suggested answer to speeding up, by increasing the virtual memory (control panel)... i did that, and i erase cache daily, but within a couple hours it will slow down a lot!
I normally work with three windows which have 3 or 4 tabs each...
at one time i was using 5 windows and tried cutting down, but nothing seems to improve performance for very long

    Hi CGemm,
Have you looked at our [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-slow-or-takes-too-long-start performance troubleshooting section]? There is a lot of good information in there that should help.
    Hopefully this helps!

See [[ firefox hangs ]] and [[Firefox is already running but is not responding]] you will need to find and kill the firefox.exe process with Task Manager.
I note you have Firefox4 beta, and probably also have firefox 3.6, I hope you run each in separate profiles, otherwise you are likely to run into problems.

I've restarted the G4 holding down "T" and have the Firewire icon floating around its screen, started Migration Assistant on the Macbook, telling it to get data from a Time Machine back up or other disk, have Firewire cable connected to both laptops, continue and the Macbook is just endlessly "Looking for Other Computers"....
    Any ideas?
    Anyone?

Additionally, When I have the two laptops connected via Firewire, I do see the disk from which I'm trying to migrate data and can copy files, etc.
Not sure if this is helpful or not but thought I'd throw it out there.

  • Running 10.4.11 I can not find the outdated plugins that Firefox keeps telling me I need. Apple Software Update doesn't help with this

I'm running 10.4.11 and am unable to find the plugin updates that Firefox keeps telling me I need on an annoying little popup window that keeps coming up whenever I download a page using Firefox. The pluin updates I need are for Quicktime, Java  to name a few. Is Apple not supplying any more plugin update because I'm using an old version of Mac OSX? The firefox plugin page tells me that Apple supppies their own plugins but I don't see any when I use Apple Software Update. Any suggestions?

Do what others do and get TenFourFox - the equivalent of the latest Firefox but built especially for PPC: http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox/
    To enable plug-ins:
Put about:config in TenFourFox's address bar and hit return
Put tenfourfox.plugins in the search box and hit return
Click tenfourfox.plugins.enabled to set it to true
    Restart TenFourFox
TenFourFox will now use the Safari Flash plug-in

  • I have Logic Pro 7 and want to upgrade to X but I can't because I have a 2007 MacBook Pro - I can only run Logic Pro 9 - where can I find it to buy?

Any recommendation as to where I can buy Logic Pro 9?  I can't run X on my MacBook because I can't upgrade to Mavericks.

Yes.. that is described as what you need.
Fingers crossed but you should be fine if it from a reputable person..
One tip.. Once you have installed it.. remember to update LP to  9.1.8 as that is the most stable version under  Lion....
I would recommend doing this before you run LP for the first time...
