Runtime stlport4 error: Unexpected Signal : 11

Hi Gurus,
I am using CC 5.5 with stlport4 to build our project. I basically build a jni library which got called from java class. I had no compile and link problem. If do "ldd -r MyLib.so", all symbols are resolved. But at runtime, I got the following error:
An unexpected exception has been detected in native code outside the VM.
Unexpected Signal : 11 occurred at PC=0xEFD7FF84

Thanks

Sun C++ 5.5. comes with STLport as an optional standard library. SInce it is not the default version of the standard library, you must follow these rules when using it:
Every CC command line used to build the entire program must have the option -library=stlport4
Every CC command used to link any part of the program, including shared libraries, must have the option -library=stlport4
If ld is used directly (instead of CC) to link a program or shared library, it must link libstlport.so.1, and not link to libCstd.so.1.
You cannot mix program parts using the default libCstd with program parts using stlport4. The entire program, including shared libraries, must use the same standard library -- either libCstd or stlport.
You can see whether there is any conflict between libCstd and stlport in your program by running the ldd command on every executable program and every shared library. If any of these shows a dependency on libCstd.so.1, you cannot use stlport in other parts of the code.
Unfortunately, it is possible to link libCstd statically, and it's difficult to tell whether that happened if all you have is an a.out or a library. Let's hope that is not the case. The supplier of the third-party components you are using should document whether they used stlport or libCstd. If they used stlport, it needs to be the version that comes with the compiler, not a version they acquired from the stlport web site. Different versions of stlport from the web site are not binary compatibie. The versions we ship with our compilers are compatible with each other.
The remaining issue is order of initialization of shared libraries. If (for example) a C program dlopens a C++ shared library that was not built with the correct dependencies, it is possible that the shared library will try to use stlport objects that haven't been initialized yet. If the main program is a C++ program that has a dependency on stlport , you won't run into that problem. Using ldd to check the dependencies of the main programs and shared libraries will show you if dependencies are inconsistent.
It is also possible for shared libraries to be mutually dependent, so that each library requires the other library to be initialized first. (This is a programming error.) That situation should not be possible with stlport, since it should not have any dependency on any user library. But if user libraries A and B have this circular dependency, it is possible that one of them passes a bad reference to stlport. Let's consider this scenario unlikely for now. The other major issues I outlined should be investigated first.
In particular, find out from the 3rd-party vendor how they built their C++ code. The possible good answers are
1 They used the default libCstd.so.1
2. They used the libstdport.so.1 that came with the compiler.
(You can run ldd to find out these answers.)
In case 1, you cannot use stlport. You must use the default libCstd, and link it dynamically (which is the default).
In case 2, you can use stlport, and you must link it dynamically (which is the default).
Any other answer is very bad news.

    Hi all
We are running a thin jsp application for video streaming live event running
on a BEA WebLogic Personalization Server 3.2 on Solaris (streaming servers
are separate and do not affect the server). After putting it in production
we have experienced serious memory problems with our environment. When the
servers are running under heavy load, they eat all available memory until
they finally crash, please see log message below. We can see that the
garbage collection is running but it doesn't seem to keep up with the memory
consumption. The problem is described in a bug report at SUN, but it is
marked as a "no fix" with the reasoning that programming resources are now
    allocated to jdk1.4?

    This bug is described in
    http://developer.java.sun.com/developer/bugParade/bugs/4408730.html.
It is also described as a known problem in
    http://www.weblogic.com/platforms/sun/index.html.
It has also been described by SUN as a problem arising from multiple nested
try/catch blocks appearing in generated java code from servlets, especially
    on WebLogic and Apache.
As SUN has said that they will not fix this bug we are trying to find a
workaround, but have yet found one. We have been looking into changing the
heap size and setting GC options on the JVM, but haven't found the optimal
solution. We would be very interested in experiences with tuning gc
parameters, documentation on solaris patches for JVMs, JVM tuning, WebLogic
    tuning, HotSpot tuning.
Has anyone experienced similar problems and found a workaround. We would be
very happy to hear any suggestions as soon as possible,
    thanks
    Kris

Perhaps the -noTryBlocks option to jspc might help you. See here:

In pthreads, the threading model that must be used in your system, thread local variables need to be implemented, and it appears as though during deallocation of this thread specific data is where it's dying. That said, I would attempt upgrading your pthread libraries, appearing as though there is nothing in Java that is going wrong. That doesn't mean unfortunately that this is the source of wrongdoing, but it couldn't hurt to eliminate.
I know there is libpthread-0.10.so out there, so there should be /some/ update to it. Reply if you need specifics.

I have contacted BEA and they seem to think that there may be a deep recurision in the application's authetication/login/error JSP pages that may be causing this. What is really interesting is that the last thing we see in our logs before the core dump is user authethication. We will see the 1.3.1_03-b03 mixed mode and we will see 1.3.1-b24 mixed mode for the JVM versions. I am wondering if Weblogic or other Web Application Servers use an embedded JVM atleast for Security or authetication that may be the issue. Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] if you have any information.

Kindly help me out to solve above problem ......
    Thanks,
    Karthik.

The kinds of issues are usually bugs in the JVM, I would check your 8.1 Service Pack / Operating System combination on this page:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E13196_01/platform/suppconfigs/configs81/81_over/overview.html#1146895
Make sure you're using the latest supported version of the JVM available for your platform.
So if you're using 8.1 SP6 on Solaris SPARC, then you could be using Sun Java 2 SDK 1.4.2_11.
You should also open a support request.

  • Unexpected Signal Error

I have a Struts application in a development environment that makes the jvm throw the "Unexpected Signal Error" and crash the JVM at will. The production version works fine. the application itself hasn't changed. All the other Struts apps work just fine. Does anyone know what the information in the log is referring to. thanks in advance:

Can anyone help me in identifying the issue?

We are running our application with OC4J server, JDK
1.4.2_07 in a HP UX 11i. The application runs
perfectly fine all through the day till 3:30 PM.
Around 3:30 PM, the application crashes with the
    following error in the log.
I would suggest looking it up but I believe that particular signal occurs when there is a pointer problem in C/C++ code.
Which means it isn't a java problem. That really seems likely given that there is a "Native Method" call. Either there is a bug in the C/C++ code or the java code is using it incorrectly.
And the reason of course for it occurring at 3:30 is because you are doing something at 3:30 that you are not doing the rest of the day.

  • Java Runtime Environment Error - Note Pads On Desktop

I have gotten three note pads on my desktop last week time: Wed Apr 29 08:32:02 2009, time: Thu Apr 30 08:42:51 2009, Sat May 02 09:43:38 2009.
I am wondering why I got three note pads on my desktop telling me about Java Runtime Environment Error.
Is this how Java Runtime Environment Error lets you know there is a problem. When a window pops up saying there is a Java Runtime Environment Error problem I normally send it.
Nothing every happens when I send Java Runtime Environment Error. How can this problem be fixed.
And why am getting Java Runtime Environment Error on my desktop. The second & third Java Runtime Environment Error cant fit in this post because of Maximum allowed is 7500 only. And I had to remove the bootom part of the first Java Runtime Environment Error just to make it fit.
If you need me to I could Post the other two Java Runtime Environment Error.
Here is the first Java Runtime Environment Error with time: Wed Apr 29 08:32:02 2009
    # An unexpected error has been detected by Java Runtime Environment:

    - changing parameter values or parameter order may help but I don't know the exact criterias.
    - 32 bit works (but our application needs 64 bit)

You are not supposed to allocate memory, etc., while GC is running. That's one of the things in JVMPI implementation. Looks like this may be a related scenario, although my guess would be that JNI methods should be invoked with GC disabled already, or block until GC completes if it's already running. However, if that's not the case, then basically you might be copying from a memory location that the JVM is moving around, resulting in a null pointer...

  • [SOLVED] Php.ini syntax error, unexpected '&'

    Hi guys,
I'm having a trouble setting up a local hosted LAMP, I want to enable the error reporting and display, but it's giving me this error:
    [root@albert albert]# php
PHP: syntax error, unexpected '&' in /etc/php/php.ini on line 105
    Line 105:
    ; error_reporting
    Default Value: E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE & ~E_STRICT & ~E_DEPRECATED ; this is the 105
    Development Value: E_ALL
    Production Value: E_ALL & ~E_DEPRECATED & ~E_STRICT
And when I access to on localhost/phpmyadmin:
Fatal error: Call to undefined function PMA_DBI_num_rows() in /usr/share/webapps/phpMyAdmin/libraries/navigation/Nodes/Node.class.php on line 408
When I comment the line 105,106,107, it works as I expected, but I can't see any error output...
    Here it's the entire php.ini:
    [PHP]
    ; About php.ini ;
; PHP's initialization file, generally called php.ini, is responsible for
; configuring many of the aspects of PHP's behavior.
; PHP attempts to find and load this configuration from a number of locations.
; The following is a summary of its search order:
; 1. SAPI module specific location.
; 2. The PHPRC environment variable. (As of PHP 5.2.0)
; 3. A number of predefined registry keys on Windows (As of PHP 5.2.0)
; 4. Current working directory (except CLI)
; 5. The web server's directory (for SAPI modules), or directory of PHP
    ; (otherwise in Windows)
; 6. The directory from the --with-config-file-path compile time option, or the
    ; Windows directory (C:\windows or C:\winnt)
; See the PHP docs for more specific information.
; The syntax of the file is extremely simple. Whitespace and lines
; beginning with a semicolon are silently ignored (as you probably guessed).
; Section headers (e.g. [Foo]) are also silently ignored, even though
; they might mean something in the future.
; Directives following the section heading [PATH=/www/mysite] only
; apply to PHP files in the /www/mysite directory. Directives
; following the section heading [HOST=www.example.com] only apply to
; PHP files served from www.example.com. Directives set in these
; special sections cannot be overridden by user-defined INI files or
; at runtime. Currently, [PATH=] and [HOST=] sections only work under
    ; CGI/FastCGI.
; Directives are specified using the following syntax:
    ; directive = value
; Directive names are *case sensitive* - foo=bar is different from FOO=bar.
; Directives are variables used to configure PHP or PHP extensions.
; There is no name validation. If PHP can't find an expected
; directive because it is not set or is mistyped, a default value will be used.
    ; The value can be a string, a number, a PHP constant (e.g. E_ALL or M_PI), one
; of the INI constants (On, Off, True, False, Yes, No and None) or an expression
    ; (e.g. E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE), a quoted string ("bar"), or a reference to a
; previously set variable or directive (e.g. ${foo})
; Expressions in the INI file are limited to bitwise operators and parentheses:
    ; | bitwise OR
    ; ^ bitwise XOR
    ; & bitwise AND
    ; ~ bitwise NOT
    ; ! boolean NOT
; Boolean flags can be turned on using the values 1, On, True or Yes.
; They can be turned off using the values 0, Off, False or No.
; An empty string can be denoted by simply not writing anything after the equal
; sign, or by using the None keyword:
; foo = ; sets foo to an empty string
; foo = None ; sets foo to an empty string
; foo = "None" ; sets foo to the string 'None'
; If you use constants in your value, and these constants belong to a
; dynamically loaded extension (either a PHP extension or a Zend extension),
; you may only use these constants *after* the line that loads the extension.
    ; About this file ;
; PHP comes packaged with two INI files. One that is recommended to be used
; in production environments and one that is recommended to be used in
    ; development environments.
; php.ini-production contains settings which hold security, performance and
; best practices at its core. But please be aware, these settings may break
; compatibility with older or less security conscience applications. We
; recommending using the production ini in production and testing environments.
; php.ini-development is very similar to its production variant, except it's
; much more verbose when it comes to errors. We recommending using the
; development version only in development environments as errors shown to
; application users can inadvertently leak otherwise secure information.
    ; Quick Reference ;
; The following are all the settings which are different in either the production
; or development versions of the INIs with respect to PHP's default behavior.
; Please see the actual settings later in the document for more details as to why
; we recommend these changes in PHP's behavior.

; Output buffering is a mechanism for controlling how much output data
; (excluding headers and cookies) PHP should keep internally before pushing that
; data to the client. If your application's output exceeds this setting, PHP
; will send that data in chunks of roughly the size you specify.
; Turning on this setting and managing its maximum buffer size can yield some
; interesting side-effects depending on your application and web server.
; You may be able to send headers and cookies after you've already sent output
; through print or echo. You also may see performance benefits if your server is
; emitting less packets due to buffered output versus PHP streaming the output
; as it gets it. On production servers, 4096 bytes is a good setting for performance
    ; reasons.
; Note: Output buffering can also be controlled via Output Buffering Control
    ; functions.
    ; Possible Values:
; On = Enabled and buffer is unlimited. (Use with caution)

; Setting any output handler automatically turns on output buffering.
; Note: People who wrote portable scripts should not depend on this ini
; directive. Instead, explicitly set the output handler using ob_start().
; Using this ini directive may cause problems unless you know what script
    ; is doing.
; Note: You cannot use both "mb_output_handler" with "ob_iconv_handler"
; and you cannot use both "ob_gzhandler" and "zlib.output_compression".

    ; Error handling and logging ;
; This directive informs PHP of which errors, warnings and notices you would like
; it to take action for. The recommended way of setting values for this
; directive is through the use of the error level constants and bitwise
; operators. The error level constants are below here for convenience as well as
; some common settings and their meanings.
; By default, PHP is set to take action on all errors, notices and warnings EXCEPT
; those related to E_NOTICE and E_STRICT, which together cover best practices and
; recommended coding standards in PHP. For performance reasons, this is the
; recommend error reporting setting. Your production server shouldn't be wasting
; resources complaining about best practices and coding standards. That's what
; development servers and development settings are for.
; Note: The php.ini-development file has this setting as E_ALL. This
; means it pretty much reports everything which is exactly what you want during
    ; development and early testing.
    ; Error Level Constants:
; E_ALL - All errors and warnings (includes E_STRICT as of PHP 5.4.0)
    ; E_ERROR - fatal run-time errors
    ; E_RECOVERABLE_ERROR - almost fatal run-time errors
    ; E_WARNING - run-time warnings (non-fatal errors)
    ; E_PARSE - compile-time parse errors
; E_NOTICE - run-time notices (these are warnings which often result
; from a bug in your code, but it's possible that it was
; intentional (e.g., using an uninitialized variable and
; relying on the fact it's automatically initialized to an
    ; empty string)
; E_STRICT - run-time notices, enable to have PHP suggest changes
; to your code which will ensure the best interoperability
; and forward compatibility of your code
; E_CORE_ERROR - fatal errors that occur during PHP's initial startup
    ; E_CORE_WARNING - warnings (non-fatal errors) that occur during PHP's
    ; initial startup
    ; E_COMPILE_ERROR - fatal compile-time errors
    ; E_COMPILE_WARNING - compile-time warnings (non-fatal errors)
    ; E_USER_ERROR - user-generated error message
    ; E_USER_WARNING - user-generated warning message
    ; E_USER_NOTICE - user-generated notice message
; E_DEPRECATED - warn about code that will not work in future versions
    ; of PHP
    ; E_USER_DEPRECATED - user-generated deprecation warnings
    ; Common Values:
; E_ALL (Show all errors, warnings and notices including coding standards.)
; E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE (Show all errors, except for notices)
; E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE & ~E_STRICT (Show all errors, except for notices and coding standards warnings.)
    ; E_COMPILE_ERROR|E_RECOVERABLE_ERROR|E_ERROR|E_CORE_ERROR (Show only errors)
    ; Default Value: E_ALL & ~E_NOTICE & ~E_STRICT & ~E_DEPRECATED
    ; Development Value: E_ALL
    ; Production Value: E_ALL & ~E_DEPRECATED & ~E_STRICT
    ; http://php.net/error-reporting

; This directive controls whether or not and where PHP will output errors,
; notices and warnings too. Error output is very useful during development, but
; it could be very dangerous in production environments. Depending on the code
; which is triggering the error, sensitive information could potentially leak
; out of your application such as database usernames and passwords or worse.
; It's recommended that errors be logged on production servers rather than
; having the errors sent to STDOUT.

    Hi, everything in the "Quick Reference" section should be commented out with ;
You should change those settings further down in the php.ini file.
    Example:
    error_reporting = E_ALL & ~E_DEPRECATED & ~E_STRICT
    display_errors = Off
