S.M.A.R.T. Drive Technology - is there?

I had a brand new drive fail on me yesterday and the way I found out about it was after opening Disk Utility to fix permissions prior to installing the Java 5.0 update. Otherwise, I would never have known until my next periodic repair mission.
I thought that the point of the S.M.A.R.T. technology was that it notifies you, possibly with a pop up or some active notification, that a drive if failing. Thank God I was able to recover what little I had on it. But still no notification. Isn't that the point of SMART Tech?
Any insight or clarification?
Thanx.

I noticed the eMail option. But I'm mostly here right in front of the screen, so a notice in my face is exactly what I want.
But in the future who knows. This would be great for traveling and having a server monitored while you're out and about.

I have to install Photoshop CS4 extended on a new computer from a disk because my old computer had a hard drive crash.  There is no serial number on the back of the case.  How can I obtain a usable serial number?

    Find your serial number quickly
You can activate software without following up and registering it... at least that was the case in the past.  The serial number is normally located on the disc case or a box inside the main box.  If you did not purchase the disc from Adobe then it is possible you would have dealt with a redemption code, in which case it would have been up to you to keep a record of the serial number, especially if you did not follow up and register the software.

I went to my local Apple store last weekend with a similar issue on my 2007 C2D MBP and they quoted me a price of around £60 (excluding VAT) to replace the optical drive. That's about the same price as the external optical drive a bought for my RMBP.
Alternatively you could just buy a 3rd party external drive if you want to save cash but note that the external Apple superdrive is not compatible with MacBooks with built in optical drives.

  • Hard Drive Failed - Is there a seperate warranty?

My Hard drive just failed. It is a Toshiba, and I am wondering if the apple warranty is for everything in the Hard drive, or if there are seperate manufactor warranties that apply to their components? I really don't want to have to buy a new hard drive since I am out of warranty. But I was thinking maybe the hard drive has a 2 year warranty. Anyone know?
    Powerbook G4 1.5   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

This is not specific to Toshiba or Apple, but in general, system makers have different options when buying drives.
Most big companies, like Dell and HP, buy OEM drives that come without an end-user warranty. Because the drive maker doesn't have to honor the warranty directly for the end user, these drives are cheaper.
However, sometimes drives that come pre-installed in systems are non-OEM and do carry an end-user warranty. This is mostly the case when there are too many drives in the retail channel, and the big distributors "flush" the channel by selling the excess stock off to system makers.
To find out if your drive carries a separate warranty, you'll have to ask Toshiba. The model and serial numbers are available in System Profiler.
Be warned, however, that replacing the Al PB HDD is not a trivial task... if you've never done something like this, I'd recommend asking an Apple-authorized service provider to do it for you.

  • I've copied my itunes library onto an external hard drive.  Is there any way I can do this and delete songs from my PC without also deleting from the external drive? Already lost two songs!!!

I've copied my itunes library onto an external hard drive.  Is there any way I can do this and delete songs from my PC without also deleting from the external drive? Already lost two songs!!!  I just want a back up - using a work PC and don't want others accessing my songs.  Hope someone can help.  Thanks!

I see. To get a better idea of what is being stored where please download and run the script iTunesInfo which should output something like this:
I'm interested in the block of 4 results starting ITL location. If your profile name shows up somewhere replace it with <Name>.  It is also worth checking under Edit > Preferences > Advanced to see where iTunes thinks your media is supposed to go. My script estimates the setting based on the location of the first media file it can actually find.

  • I accidentally deleted my media files from iTunes and Trash when I was trying to move the files to an external hard drive. Is there a way to restore the media files from a Time Machine backup or from iTunes Match? What are the steps to do this?

I accidentally deleted my media files from iTunes and Trash when I was trying to move the files to an external hard drive. Is there a way to restore the media files from a Time Machine backup or from iTunes Match? What are the steps to do this?

If you have been backing up on Timemachine.
All you need to do is enter time machine... Then the rest is obvious.
Find the iTunes folder and hit 'Restor'.
If not the only way to get all your iTunes music back is to enter iTunes Store.
On the right hand side you should see 'Purchased'.
Click 'purchased' and there you have it.

Is there like in a hard drive of which iTunes can read the media, which will not require me to add and delete media onto iTunes, because of a lack of space on my laptop?

just get an ext HD, and point your itunes library to that drive so now you'll just keep all your media on this ext

  • I have a CD stuck in the drive.  Is there are quick fix or do I need to take it into an Apple store.  I have a MacBook Pro 15"

I have a disc stuck in the drive.  Is there a fix I can perform or do I need to bring my MacPro to the Apple store?
    Phil

    Here are some standard remedies.
First try the normal methods to remove the disc. Drag its icon to the Trash can in the Dock or select 'Eject' from the File menu.
Shut down the computer and start up whilst holding down the mouse button. This may take some time, but keep your finger on the mouse button right up until the disc comes out or the log-in screen has appeared.
Open Disk Utility and choose the disc you wish to eject in the left-hand pane, then click on the Eject button.
Some Macintoshes have a paperclip hole that you can insert a straightened paperclip into, manually triggering the eject mechanism.
Open Terminal and type "drutil tray eject" to eject the disc/tray, and "drutil tray close" to close the tray.
If your computer has an eject button on the keyboard, restart the computer holding down the Option key. When the startup disk selection screen appears, let go of the option key and press the keyboard's eject button.

  • I want to make a TimeMachine backup in a new hard-drive I just bought. It says it has to erase the info but as the drive is new there's no info in it, so what it is going to be erased?

I want to make a TimeMachine backup in a new hard-drive I just bought. It says it has to erase the info but as the drive is new there's no info in it, so what it is going to be erased?
I had to format it after I bought it so that it could work with windows and Mac and I'm afraid that if I erase the info in the hard-drive, the format will also change. Is that possible to happen? Or the format will stay the same?
    Thank you

Do you want to continue to use it to share and store files between Windows and NTFS and Mac which uses HFS?
Maybe you need another drive. I would never have only one backup and one "live" data set.
you probably installed something, whether it is current or well supported or not, that came with the drive to allow writing to NTFS.
TimeMachine has to use HFS only and use Apple GPT (GUID) format.
sometimes erase changes a drive to GUID when you click on the raw hard drive name in Disk Utility. other times you can erase a volume and leave the partition format type as is. The wording use to be clearer when people knew when and how to initialize, format and setup a drive. And sometimes a message on the screen says it will be only launches Disk Utility and not to the PARTITION tab to make changes.
In addition to TimeMachine, having a clone of your system or data or both can be very useful as well. Drives fail.
And with a MacBook Air you probably have a smallish internal hard drive and might need to store media files and data on another drive to supplement the internal SSD.

  • My PC doesn't recognise my iPhone6, any trustworthy driver downloads out there?

My PC doesn't recognise my iPhone6, any trustworthy driver downloads out there?

Well, did you try on different USB ports ..? Once you connect your device in to PC, then unlock the device screen and see if device asks "trust this PC." or not.
As i said "try to use a different USB ports." Or, USB cable is the original one, right ?
If you run any antivirus softwares, disable it then. Besides, check the internet firewall enabled or not.
If iTunes does not recognize your device, then you do need to uninstall iTunes and then re-install it.

I am trying to download Final Cut Pro, but it keeps telling me there is not enough space on my hard drive even though there is. Help?

I realized that my laptop only has 2GB of memory. It's a MacBook Pro 13in bought in 2009. Is it true that I'm able to upgrade up to 8GB of memory. Seems like 4GB of space is a lot for a single program to be running.. A bummer I'll have to save up for more memory.

    Sure.
If your hard drive is still physically working, simply restore it from your computer's backup.

I have a 27" iMac with a broken hard drive. Is there a way to convert the existing hardware into a display monitor without too much technical work?

You don't state what iMac it is or what you want to use it for an external display with so we cannot answer the question. But without a bootable drive, no you cannot. However you can get the internal HD replaced or you can connect an external HD and boot from it. Without some basics about the computer it's impossible question to answer. However you may find what need in Apple's Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
