Safari 5.1, Netflix, OS 10.6.8

I can't seem to run netflix properly after upgrading to 5.1.  I'm still running 10.6.8 and whenever I watch netflix on safari in the minimized mode (not full screen), I get choppy video (not audio).  As soon as I go into full screen it's fine.  I'm almost 99 percent positive it has to do with safari specifically after the 5.1 update because netflix runs fine in both modes (full screen and non-full screen) on both firefox and google chrome.  Anyone else having this kind of trouble?

Why not just revert your Safari? If you're on 10.6.8, you probably value stability, and Safari 5.1 won't cut it for you.
This takes about a minute, but make sure you're backed up first.
Open Terminal:
At the prompt, paste this:
sudo tar -xvf /Library/Application\ Support/Apple/.SafariArchive.tar.gz -C /
Enter password, acknowledge warning (nod sagely), hit return. Terminal goes mad reporting progress.
Previous version of Safari is restored at this point.
Then at the prompt, paste this:
sudo rm -rf /private/var/db/receipts/com.apple.pkg.Safari51SnowLeopard.*
This deletes the receipt for Safari 5.1.
Quit Terminal and reboot immediately. Previous version of Safari should be installed and working perfectly.
(Thank you, that sage engineer who decided that 'obsolete' stuff should be archived on the machine)

  • Safari cannot load Netflix

I am having issue with Safari not loading Netflix home page. Does anyone else have the same problem? If so what would be the best fix?
    Thanks!

    What happens when you try?

  • Had to work off safari to watch netflix via silverlight... tried uninstalling silverlight and reinstalling, but it appears the silverlight plug in will not work with firefox 4. anyone else experience this problem?

netflix support guided me through deinstall/reinstall, but that did not fix the problem. we determined silverlight is not firefox beta 4 friendly... anyone else have this problem? thanks.

  • Safari stops while playing netflix

    Hi,
After installing yoshemite every now and then my safari just stops while I'm playing netflix. It does not happen every time and sometimes it takes more than an hour before it happens but very regularly safari just quits. I cannot find where this is coming from nor how to fix it. I cannot find strange add-ons or plug-ins and everything is up to date. It only happens with netflix. If I reopen safari and open netflix again, I can just easily continue watching where I stopped but it is very annoying... Anyone an idea how to solve this problem?
    Thx!

No i wont. mostly because Safari just works the best of all internet browsers. and secondly IT IS MICROSOFT, so i will not use IE8. And apart of my problem it works just fine.
    But thanks anyways

  • Why won't safari 7.o.1 work with silverlight and netflix using mavericks?

Netflx requires MS Silverlight. After installation Safari leads to the Netflix prompt "thanks for downloading, please restart your browser"--restarting browser doesn't work, nor does restarting computer. Netflix works with Silverlight on Firefox however. So, it seems like a Safari problem. Netflix techs couldn't help. I'm using a MacBook Air with Mavericks. Thank you for any advice on getting Safari (7.0.1) to work with Silverlight with Netflix.

Neither one of those Safari extensions are beneficial, so I suggest you uninstall them.
Safari Restore looks like junk. It's no longer required anyway since Safari already incorporates what it allegedly does.
Folx may have corrupted the Silverlight download, therefore I suggest repeating my above instructions to remove and re-install Silverlight.
Restart your Mac in "Safe Mode" and determine if you can load a Netflix movie then. Netflix will stream in Safe Mode, but the video is likely to stutter and there may be no audio.
    Please read the following first:
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.

  • Why is netflix having display problems on my macbook pro... HDCP compliance?

Watching Netflix and all of a sudden it says "Display Problems"  Make sure your monitor is HDCP Compliant and is not setup for mirror airplay??

The issue is from Safari defaulting to HTML5 vs using Silverlight like it did in Mavericks.
So the options are, if you want to use Safari goto your Netflix account, playback preferences and turn off HTML5. This will revert to Silverlight and will AirPlay fine*in Safari.
If you want to use HTML5, just leave the setting for HTML5 on in Netflix and use Chrome, Firefox, etc.
You can't currently have both Safari and HTML5 Netflix when using AirPlay. You'd think Safari would be a little bit more powerful with Apples stances on browser extensions.

  • How do you get Safari 6.0.2 to open one window???

I want to use the back/fwd arrows to view windows, not tabs and I hate having 3 windows open.  It does this when Yahoo, Google or any other search engine is used, but if I go to a site from my bookmarks it is fine.  Maddening.  It was OK via Yahoo and Google and just started this about a week ago!!!!

I found a solution for the HDCP error message I've been getting when using Safari to watch Netflix movies or iTune movies. I had to uninstall 3rd party software that messes with the Apple display. Actually I didn't find the solution but an Apple Tech Support guy did. The person I talked to knew exactly what to do - immediately. Quick easy solution! I had hooked up an older 20" Apple display using a USB device made by Diamond. Diamond has a folder called "Display Link" that is installed in the application folder. I uninstalled that software. I also uninstalled Wiretap, Snapz Pro, and Audio Hyjack. All seem to interfere with the Apple displays. I was told I could reinstall the software except for Diamond stuff. I'll contact Diamond about a possible upgrade to their software so it doesn't interfere with HDCP in Apple displays. …

  • How do I fix safari on my new macbook pro?

When I open a page in Safari, for example Netflix, and then click on a button, a new window pops up trying to sell me something, for example a "Macfixer" - no matter how many times I close the window, or how many times I empty safari cache and reset it, the problem persists. I have reset the preferences at least a dozen times, and each time I open safari, they have bounced back to "allow cookies", etc.

If you are having an immediate problem with ads popping up see The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide and AdwareMedic.
Open Safari, select Preferences from the Safari menu. Click on Extensions icon in the toolbar. Disable all Extensions. If this stops your problem, then re-enable them one by one until the problem returns. Now remove that extension as it is causing the problem.
The following comes from user stevejobsfan0123. I have made minor changes to adapt to this presentation.
Fix Some Browser Pop-ups That Take Over Safari.
Common pop-ups include a message saying the government has seized your computer and you must pay to have it released (often called "Moneypak"), or a phony message saying that your computer has been infected, and you need to call a tech support number (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it resolved. First, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and your computer has not been affected. This "hijack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so do not pay any money, call the listed number, or provide any personal information. This article will outline the solution to dismiss the pop-up.
    Quit Safari
Usually, these pop-ups will not go away by either clicking "OK" or "Cancel." Furthermore, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in gray, including the option to quit Safari. You will likely have to force quit Safari. To do this, press Command + option + esc, select Safari, and press Force Quit.
    Relaunch Safari
If you relaunch Safari, the page will reopen. To prevent this from happening, hold down the 'Shift' key while opening Safari. This will prevent windows from the last time Safari was running from reopening.
This will not work in all cases. The shift key must be held at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window reappears. In these circumstances, after force quitting Safari, turn off Wi-Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then relaunch Safari normally. It will try to reload the malicious webpage, but without a connection, it won't be able to. Navigate away from that page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com, and trying to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet, and the page you entered will appear rather than the malicious one.

  • Problems Viewing Flash in Safari

I posted this over three days ago, got 49 views, and exactly zero replies!
So I am reposting in high hopes that someone can suggest something, anything that I can try.
    Thanks for viewing anyway...
+I am trying to troubleshoot for my sister who has an iMac G4 800mhz; 768mb RAM; 64mb VRAM; running 10.4.10+
+Quicktime trailers play fine for her in Safari, (or on her desktop), but with Flash content, like at Youtube, or Comedy Central, the video playback stutters badly. I define stutter, as unwatchable jumpy video, and audio that plays back better than the video, but also drops out occasionally.+
+I've upgraded her to the the latest version of Flash, and that did nothing. I also downloaded Firefox, just to check another browser, and Flash content stutters there to.+
+My next idea, as a test, was to download a flash file to her desktop, and see if it stutters there without using Safari, and it's flash plugin, as the player.+
+So I downloaded a flash file from youtube, (by doubleclicking it in the activity window, which automatically downloads a file called, "get video," with no file extension, and a generic icon.)+
+I then added a .flv on the end of the file name, and the icon turned into a flash icon.+
+Now, I want to note, on my computers, when I add a .flv on the end of the name of one of these files I've downloaded from Youtube, when I highlight it in a finder window under column view, I see a preview of the movie, which I can play there. I can also ctrl click, and choose, open with other, (because flash player will not open an flv file), and choose Quicktime as the app, it opens and plays.+
+On her computer, when I highlight the same file in column view in her finder window, there is no preview visible, just a large flash icon, and the file will not open with her Quicktime app either.+
+Now, I could care less whether she can play the darn things on her desktop, though I am perplexed that I cannot. (I was just troubleshooting.) Btw, we are both using the same versions of OSX 10.4.10; Safari 2.0.4; Quicktime 7.2; and Flashplayer 9.0+
+All I want is for her to be able to play Flash content on Safari without the stutter.+
    +Any suggestions?+

The most important thing: don't upgrade your OS or browser now.
Next, all we need to know is the speed of her internet connection, the amount of space left on her hard drive, the number of cute little widgets she has on her machine, and how long & often 10.4 has been used. These I explain below (except the internet speed, which just requires a larger buffer).
First, however, try adjusting the Power Management from 'Better Energy Savings' to 'Better Performance'. Flash runs fine on an iBook G3 whose disk is virtually filled (for momentary storage) connected to a 100 Mbps DSL, so something big (but likely easily fixed) is wrong.
On the G3 machine, Flash cinema (as opposed to cartoons, in SWF files) will stutter hopelessly if the Energy Setting is 'Better Energy Setting' and run adequately if set for 'Better Performance'. This is when viewing previews with Safari 2 of NetFlix movies.
If you Ctrl-Click the screen, a little menu offers 'Settings'. Clicking the folder, I choose only 100 Mb of cache. You can offer Flash as much as it wants.
The real problem, I'm guessing, is that MacOSX 10.4 is not paging (as it should), but swapping in desperation. This OS uses demand paging: the real memory is pretty much filled with processes (programs in memory) you either need or want to run, and the OS starts exchanging those pages (4096 bytes?) from the hard disk needed to run what is now scheduled, replacing part of the memory of a process not currently needed to run. This is fast, and the processors have hardware designed to page.
Problems arise when (1) you have many little widgets active (for, though they don't run, they take up real memory and can significantly reduce your 768 MB of RAM; and (2) your processor is stressed. This you can check by running 'Activity Monitor'. When real memory is mostly filled most of the time, when your hard disk's freespace is fragmented so the pages must be stretched out all over your disk; or the number of processes become too great: your computer swaps to speed the computer.
Swapping moves essentially the entire process to your hard disk, so whole processes are stored in real memory. These can be large. If you need just several large ones, they must play musical chairs: some pause when swapped to the hard disk, and others run fast. Power Management needed to cool the G4 is sophisticated, and takes memory. Safari 2 takes great memory. If fact, Safari 2 and a few widget will fill about 512 MB of RAM chips.
Now, if your swapping several processes that the scheduler things are really, really needed to keep your computer running, Flash Player will be swapped out, empying its cache. When it comes back, moments later, you have lost that period of time and it stutters.
I should start 'Activity Monitor' running, see what resources you are short on, then 'turn off' the Power Management processes and see if things improve. If you are not short of any resources, I should suspect your freespace is fragmented. This is not reported by any utility I'm aware of, but it will cause your Mac to ultimately swap rather than page.
This is because 10.4 had its file system 'augmented': every 20 MB or less in size is written defragmented. This is done by searching out the free space and diminishing it. This was (in my opinion) a good idea only if people now & then defragment their disks with a file-by-file backup & restore, or a disk defragmenter. Otherwise, your computer will eventually stop paging & start swapping, with a great change to your 'user experience', and you won't know why.
I should guess that this iMac G4 has run 10.4 quite a while without either. Is this true? Version 10.4 was installed on this iBook G3 when it first came out, and months ago I received the message: 'Not enough free space for 5 MB swapfile', when the OS reported 7 GB free on the hard disk!
    Write back.
    Best of luck,
    Bruce

  • My mac mini shuts down 15 minutes into watching Netflix. Why?

After watching Netflix for 15 minutes, my Mac mini shuts off. I've tried to reboot it, log back on, but again the computer shuts off completely after another minute. I bought the Mac mini in 2008. Any idea what could be causing this problem, or how to fix it?

Check System Preferences under Energy Saver. You may have the system set to go to sleep when inactive for 15 minutes. Netflix playback isn't necessarily seen as the computer being 'active', because the keyboard and mouse are not providing any input. This may be more especially true if you are using a browser other than Safari to access Netflix.

  • HDCP error on netflix

When using the latest safari and using Netflix there is an error message saying this monitor is not HDCP compatible.  This only happens when routing audio through HDMI and using the monitors DVI connection for a picture.  HDMI is only used for audio which is does a very good job with Firefox that uses Silverlight.  Netflix says the problem arises with Safari because Safari uses HTML 5......

  • Weird Netflix Stuttering problem

When using Firefox to watch video on netflix, I experience a bizarre stuttering (low framerate, motion is jerky) when viewing in fullscreen only. This problem is non-existant on Safari and Chrome, but FF is my preferred browser so I would like to use it for netflix. I have the latest version of silverlight, and am using an early 2011 MBP 13'', Lion 10.7.4. Any solutions?

I have noticed this too, and it seems to be because of too much stuff running on your computer. As Firefox isn't nearly as streamlined on the Mac as it is on PC, I'd stick to using Safari to use Netflix.
There really isn't anything you can do to help Firefox, except send them an e-mail about it and hope for the best.
    Hope this helped sloughricher!

  • Suddenly, Firefox won't load Netflix site

    Hi all,
All of a sudden, completely out of the blue, Firefox will not load the Netflix website, or it takes forever for it to load. I have used Netflix streaming for over a year now and never run into this problem. I am using a MacBook, OS X 10.4.11, and Firefox 3.6.28, but am having the same problem when I try using Safari. A Netflix representative told me it must be a security issue because I am able to reach the Netflix sign in page just fine. The loading problem occurs when I actually try to sign in and get to my queue, personal page, etc. My internet is fine, and I'm able to load other websites as quickly as always.
Any tips or suggestions? I have no clue why this is suddenly happening.

The "Mac" FF users hang out in FF forums.  You should post there.

  • Message: "your computer was restarted because of a problem..."

    Hi all,
Just upgraded to OS X Mavericks as soon as it became available for me to download. However, a few times now, while I'm doing things, my Mac Mini keeps freezing up for a second and then restarts itself, showing a screen that says, "your computer was restarted because of a problem. Press a key or wait a few seconds to continue starting up." It isn't a specific thing that I can recall doing each time that I think is the root of the problem.
Each of the occurances was during:
    1. watching Hulu on Safari
    2. watching Netflix on Chrome
    3. watching Netflix on Safari
    4. watching a movie on VLC Player
    5. doing work on Excel
    6. reading an email using Apple's Mail Client
Luckily I haven't lost anything wildly important because of it, but I am somewhat fearful of the random restarts having a deeper problematic effect on my machine.
Has anyone else been experiencing this at all to a less/equal/greater degree?
Does anyone know of a possible fix?
Thank you very much for any input or help you can provide.
