Safari hangs almost everytime I reply to messages on this board
I have at home what I consider a fairly fast Verizon Business FIOS (15/2 megabit) connection, which along with Safari works extremely well, but invariably almost always hangs up when I access this AppleScript message board.
It hangs up mostly when I try to read and reply to individual messages, followed by trying to get back to the list topics. It almost always, without exception, hangs up when posting a new topic, or editing a new topic within the allowable first 15 minutes.
What I've noticed is that if I stop the spinning icon, and try to reload the page, sometimes the new message shows up on the list, and sometimes it doesn't and I have to re-enter it again. I don't normally get the error message below, because for the most part it becomes obvious that Safari is hung, and I just try to reload the list page and start over again.
I'm wondering if anyone else has noticed this, or what the problem might be with my setup. I suspect it's the site, because as I mentioned before, Safari almost never hangs up for me, except at this site.
Any ideas ?
I am running OSX 10.4.8 on an iMac G5 (non-intel)
http://discussions.apple.com/post!default.jspa?forumID=724
Safari can’t open the page.
Safari can’t open the page “http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=724”. The error was: “lost network connection” (NSURLErrorDomain:-1005) Please choose Report Bug to Apple from the Safari menu, note the error number, and describe what you did before you saw this message.
I don't have FIOS but I do use Safari to access the discussion forums without encountering the issue you've described (knock on wood). It's always hard to diagnose and troubleshoot connection issues without actually sitting in front of the computer (even more so when the problem is intermittent). Let me ask some questions:
Is your computer connecting wirelessly?
Have you tried resetting Safari and/or emptying the cache?
Have you tried Private Browsing to note any differences?
How about going to Safari's->Preferences->Security and checking/unchecking Web Contents and/or enabling/disabling cookies?
Have you tried creating another user account on your machine and log in with that user account to access the discussion board to see if there's a difference?
Good luck,
TK

using time warner road runner. when I try to open up safari to home page I get error message that this version does not support the "community toolbar" can't proceed until closing the error message. sick of seeing it
That toolbar/ct plugin seems to cause problems for all who install it!
Close Safari, then locate and delete the following files and it should be gone:
/Library/Application Support/Conduit
/Library/InputManagers/CTLoader
/Library/Receipts/ctloader.pkg
/Library/Receipts/<Toolbar name>.pkg
/Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins/CT2285220.bundle
/Users/<User name>/Library/Application Support/Conduit
where / is the root library on your Hard Disk.
If you are running Snow Leopard you should also look here:
Library/launchAgents/com.conduit.loader.agent.plist
Library/Application support/conduit plugins
Also, as mentioned by Gilli2000:
Library/Receipts - If you read it, it has information in it at the bottom referring extensively to "CT" and "community toolbar".
Maybe it is harmless, but trash those items anyway!
Note: Safari does not support any third-party toolbars except those supplied as an extension to Safari via the Extension Gallery. -
So, what happens to the archived messages on this board??
Why is there always only 1 page of messages on these boards?
If Adobe would make all messages available I'm sure a lot of
questions could be answered automatically. After you log in select "Profile", then select "Profile"
(Next to Personal Options) again in the two options for your
profile. You will then see and option: Days back to view topics
for. Put 999 there and you should see more than 1 page of history.

Firefox 3.6.15 hangs almost everytime I close the program, any fix soon?
It started with the update to 3.6.14 and worsen with 3.6.15 now almost every time I close Firefox it hangs and I have to end manually the process. I have the same problem on 3 different PC running Windows 7 32-bit, Windows 7 64-bit, and Windows Vista, and the all have different Add-ins, and I did not have that problem with 3.6.13
Try uninstalling the Ask toolbar and it should work again. There is a compatibility issue with the Ask toolbar and Firefox that prevents new tabs from being opened.

Safari crashes almost everytime I use it
The screen goes black and I lose data. This happens sometimes after less than a mintue and sometimes I can be on as long as five or ten montues before it crashes. I did restore with Apple service tech on telephone today becuase telephone would not turn on. The telephone now turns on, but crashes all the time. Any fix or solution?
I did the update. My phone literally would not turn on unless I plugged the power cord in. The lag and crash was horrid on 2.0.
I am getting lag right now as I type even though this phone was updated to newer version today with help from tech support.
I have now spent around $1,500 on iPhones due to cracking screens (one feel only about a foot out of a beach bag and was in a protective case). I spent $ 500.00 traveling last week to an Apple Store since they would not send me a 3G replacement for my iPhone in the mail and would not even hold one for me so a family member could pick it up to keep me from having to leave the beach to get a new phone.
I have spent perhaps two hours on telephone with tech support and on these web sites trouble shooting my whacked out iPhone. I am a lawyer that bills $ 400.00 an hour so my total expenditure for my current non functioning iPhone is about $ 2,400.00 out of pocket.
These things are a joke and the consumer being compelled to pay nearly full price fir a new phone because we are stuck on this AT&T contract for iphone line. Heck, there were 3 people with cracked phones at the store when I went to replace cracked phone number 2 iN March or April. Any wonder why Apple does not sell a warranty? Even LG offers a warranty for broken screens for their $650.00 touch screen Flip.

Some observations concerning Safari hanging
Many postings in this discussion group report that Safari hangs frequently. When that happens, you see the spinning polychrome ball, and you're more or less obliged to force quit Safari and start all over again. I experience that frequently. Many people have given up on Safari, and migrated to Firefox.
Following, is a specific report of ONE particular way that Safari hangs, in my experience. I'm providing this report in case it will help someone find out how to prevent Safari hanging.
When I copy URLs from IE6 in Virtual PC and then paste them into the address bar in Safari on the Mac side, the URL in the address bar looks good until I hit the "return" key. At that time, the three characters "%00" appear, appended at the end of the URL. More often than not, Safari cannot then find the desired web site. Occasionally Safari does find the web site.
Alternatively, after I hit the "return" key and see the URL with the three additional characters appended, sometimes Safari hangs" - i.e. Safari effectively freezes (apart from the spinning polychrome ball). The only remedy then is to force quit Safari.
I wonder if this is related to all the multitude of postings in this discussion group about Safari hanging!! If so, it might yield an important clue as to the reason for the hanging of Safari.
By the way, when I email URLs from Virtual PC to myself on the Mac side - that works fine. After receiving the URLs in the Mac, I can either click on them in the email message or copy them and paste them into the address bar of Safari, and Safari then performs beautifully.
Can anyone use this information to get the hanging bug out of Safari?Hi Mike...for your question #3, I found a couple discussion threads about this issue which appears to be 'possibly' either a software glitch or Apple's way of discouraging people from listening to free music and forced to purchase music.
Anyhow here are the two discussion threads:

I have a 3GS, my wife has a 4S. Both are on IOS6. Her reply with message works fine when i call her. Mine doesn't. Basically i get a message saying delivered, but in a new stream, and the message doesn't get to her.
If i turn off imessage, all is well, but that sort of defeats the object.
Also, in this new stream if i try a normal message it doesn't get there either despite saying it is delivered. I have even tried selecting her number from the contact info butoon and it doesn't work.
Basically, there is a bug with imessage and the reply with message service. Its almost like the reply with message is picking a null address.
I haven't tried with a non iphone user, as its all we have, but i will be trying this out tomorrow. I expect as i'm not using imessage it will work.I found it!!! General, Passcode Lock, and make sure that under "Allow Access When Locked" catagory Reply with Message is ON

I am having problems composing and replying to messages in gmail
Firefox just updated to 3.6.12 today, and after that, my gmail stopped working normally. I can no longer compose or reply to messages following this update, however, I can use gmail on my iPhone, so I assume this is an FF issue. I had Buzz disabled for months, which can be an issue, but obviously it had been working with it offline, so I don't think that is an issue in this case. Gmail does appear to work okay in Basic HTML form, following my switching back to that, but I hope this can be resolved so I can use the standard new Gmail as I had with no problem for years. This is the first problem I have ever had with Firefox updates, again, assuming that is the cause. Maybe it's not, but if/when anyone has any info, please reply.
Thanks!I have had about:config >dom.storage.enabled, set at false for a week or so now. There were no problems until the ff 3.6.12 update yesterday morning when I began having the same problems as all of you. I allowed all scripts, problem persisted so I went back to about:config, toggled dom storage to true and voila, chat and compose started working. Just to check, I switched it back to false and it stopped working. You can use the add-on betterprivacy to autodelete dom storage cookies but it looks like google will no longer allow you to disable them completely.
more on enabling/dis-enabling in firefox, this is for windows but should be the same for other os: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/106540-dom-storage-cookies-enable-disable.html

Unable to Reply to Messages in Safari 4.0.2
I've been using Safari 4.0.2 (Mac OS X) to reply to messages in the Acrobat and InDesign forums. Suddenly, two days ago, I've lost that ability. (I can still reply in Firefox 3.5.1, so I can post this here.
When I click Reply in Safari, the Post Reply screen appears, and everything is selectable EXCEPT the field for the reply is a small unselectable rectangle. It doesn't show the options for setting font, style, or any of that, and there is no way to type into the field.
I have done nothing to my configuration in the past couple days. Was there a change in Forum Software versions a couple days ago that might have caused this? Any suggestions?Actually SeaMonkey came first in the form of Netscape navigator 3.0.1.a, Communicator, Then Mozilla, then finally SeaMonkey. It was only after The product became Mozilla that the FF and TB projects began as a direct competitor to then MS IE and OE.
BTW: the cat looks almost like my cat except that their is not as much white on the face ans non on the back . just has a white section from neck down -
Multiple Safari hangs after installing Snow Leopard
I had 5 Safari hangs today within hours...never had one since I bought the machine in June 2009 with Leopard installed...Since the SL upgrade CD, I have had 2 system freezes that result in a complete shutdown to clear and multiple Safari hangs that I able to recover with a force quit..My daughter in college with the same machine reported that she had 3 system freezes in one day since SL...My wife who did NOT yet install the SL upgrade and is now blissfully having no problems at all and does not want to install the new OS (again same machine type, We bought 3of them in June after the announcement). I hope that this gets debugged and fixes provided...
Hi,
Mac OS X 10.5: What you can do if Safari quits unexpectedly
That links is for 10.5 but the trouble shooting will work in 10.6 also.
For system freezes try maintenance.
Maintaining Mac OS X
On the Macs you upgraded to SL, did you check to see if you had 3rd party software installed that might not be compatible? http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3258
Did you repair permissions after the upgrade?
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

Safari hangs after Yosemite install;
I installed Yosemite on my MAC Book Pro;
When my Mac is in sleep mode and the cover is closed, Safari hangs and I get a blank screen;
The only fix I found was to restart the Mac and safari is back.
any recommendations on how to fix the safari issue?thanks for the reply;
I can quit safari fine; no need to force quit; I get a white screen and nothing happens.
I can quit safari normally;
I restart it and get the same white screen
However when I restart my Mac , safari works fine.
This process happens every morning; I close the cover to my Mac at night, and try to start it the following day. -
Safari hangs direct after starting up. Rainbow bol rotates around one hour after which a message is shown: "not enough program memory"
More than 90G free on HD, even removed more files and installed OS and programs again. Nothing helps.
HelpSIG, thanks for your reaction. After reading my question again I understand it was not clear.
The reason I mentioned the 90G free HD space was the information I found on internet about my problem in which it was assumed there was not enough RAM memory and the processor uses the HD for SWAP files?
In any way my problem is still there and I like to add some information:
MACBookPro OSX 10.6.7, 2.4 GHz duo, 4GB DDR3 RAM, L2 cache 3MB, 250 GB HD (90 GB free).
What I have done untill now:
Re-install OSX plus programs
Reboot in safe mode (cold start with shift C pressed)
A number of reports generated after a forced Safari stop were send to Apple. (by the way what are they doing with these? besides not helping me?).
Just today I learned where to find the Safari cache file's which I will empty when I am back from work tonight.
I hope, with this additional information you have some more suggestions. In any way I will come back with the result of emptying the Safari cache. -
Hi,
I was borwsing the web in my MacBook Pro using Safari 5.1. I was composing a email on Gmail when the colorful spinwheel appeared. I let the spinwheel to run for about 45 seconds before attempting a Force Quit. Since Safari did not get out of its spinwheel (hang), I then went to the Apple Menu and opened up the "Force Quit" menu, I selected Safari and proceeded to force quit the progam. This is where things got wierd, after force quitting Safari, the whole system became unresponsive, I was not able to make any selections on the Apple Menu. However the most bizzare part of the issue was that the cursor still moved but nothing was selectable on screen, so I decided to make a key combination (cmd+option+power button) to make a force restart (I don't like the forced restart method where the user presses the power button for more than 5 seconds, I am told that the key combination of forced restart allows the EFI to reset the whole system).
Has anyone experienced such symptoms when using Safari?, Is this a common issue?
Thanks for your time!Lion in it's current released form ( 10.7.1 ) has lots of strange glitches and Safari is a memory hogging performance killer. If you open Activity Monitor with Safari open adn browsing like you usually do, then you will notice two connected processes : Safari itself and "Safari webcontent" , these two can also be accompanied by the evil Flash plugin of course.
"Webcontent" is new in v5.1 and is a sandboxing around any open website, a security "firewall" for the web - if a website has malware that wants to sneak via Safari into your Harddisk, then the webcontent process will forbid that. Safari ( as all apps and the OS itself ) in Lion runs by default in 64bit usermode mode, making things even worse, because the App has unlimited access to the physically available RAM ( memory ), so if Safari goes crazy due to some websites, it can occupy every ressource in Mac OSX so bad that the rest of the OS becomes unresponsive. Because 64bit Browser will also need 64bit plugins, and as we all know that flash on its own is itself ressource intense, you might imagine what happens if such "webprocesses" have embedded flash movies in them ..
So, momentary tragically this mix of 64bit computing and the security sandboxing model leads to all sort of issues, including memory leaks and hangs ( not only in Safari , but it is a number one source for that ) .
You can limit the available memory, this cures some issues = run Safari in 32bit mode. This will also force the flash plugin to 32bit mode, making it more ressource friendly ( to some degree at least ) .
Reveal Safari in your application folder, right click "get info" and checkmark "run in 32bit compatibility mode".
To avoid having the flash plugin active all the time ( or to play videos in Quicktime ) , I recommend the safari extension "click to flash" ( free ) installable via safari's Settings Menu. Only movies that you want to see will then play ( after you click them, as the name implies ) - this limits memory usage of Safari, too.
A befriended developer who has already the final version of 10.7.2 update swears that it cures virtually all existing Lion and Safari issues. It should be available on or before October 12 together with iCloud and iOS5 and the new iTunes . Apple reveled oct 12 as the introduction date for their new line of apps and iCloud, and because 10.7.2 integrates all these needed stuff for it to work, it must come out the very same day or even before. ( this is no "Speculation" which is "forbidden to discuss here" -- it's a simple matter of fact , watch the last keynote held by Apple CEO Cook where they introduce iphone4s - it has all the infos )
So. only 2 days left maximum, then we all be happy I guess

Read through all the discussions and I seek help with the following. Safari hangs at start up. The window appears but the only thing I see is a spinning colored wheel. Did a force quit, repaired disk permissions and rebooted but still nothing. This is the error report under force quit:

Any help will be greatly appreciatedHi,
These hangs that mention "URL Cache" in the reports tend to be fixed by clearing out some of the system level caches (some of these are still user specific, despite living under the /System folder).
To give that area a clean, download [Onyx|http://www.titanium.free.fr/pgs/english.html] and use the settings shown in the screenshot of the appropriate version for your OS X.
Good luck! -
Safari hangs while opening specific page
So when I try to open one specific page (which is working because I could open it with Google Chrome) safari hangs in the middle of the blue bar and I can't open any other pages, it's like the internet had stopped working
I already tried to reset it, deleted the files in the hidden library, disable plugins etc
any ideias? Thanks
PS: I'm using Safari 6.0.2 and Mountain Lion 10.8.2Please read this whole message before doing anything. This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it. Step 1 The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account. Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.” While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin. Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem? After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it. *Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing. Step 2 The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.
