Safari: how to autofill filename when using 'download linked file as' option

I usually need to download email attachment to specific folders, not to the downloads folder. When I use "download linked file as" I get the option to choose the location, which is great, but the filename is '0'. I don't want to have to cut and paste the filename every time - why doesn't Safari grab the filename automatically, as it does when you just click download? Is there a way around this? It's a big workflow issue for me, and the reason I switched to Chrome previously .. surely there's a fix for this basic function though?
I'm downloading from Gmail running in my browser.
Safari: Version 7.1 (9537.85.10.17.1)
Mac OS X 10.9.5

Just checked on 10.7.4+, still the same, something is borked about your install, to see if we need to re-install...
To find out if it's system wide or user specific, try this...
Open System Preferences>Accounts, unlock the lock, click on the little plus icon, make a new admin account, log out & into the new account.
Does it work in the new account?

  • How can you keep the file name when using "Download Linked File As..."?

I'm a longtime PC user finally making the transition to Mac.  Some of the tasks that seemed so simple in Windows have really stumped me!  One of the tasks I do frequently is download files into specific folders.  After much looking, I finally found the "Download Linked File As..." option if I right-click on the download link.  The problem is, when I choose this option, I lose the file name.  I get a window in which I can choose the desired folder, but the filename is always "0".  If I want to keep the filename (and I usually do), I have to type it in manually.  Is there anyway around this?

How do I resolve "error processing your request" when using the download link in My Orders for photoshop 5

As Jeff already hinted at, try a different browser. Such issues almost always are local problems on your end. Something is either changing or blocking the HTTP headers used for forwarding (could be your router, a desktop firewall or other security tools) or a JavaScript is not running/ being blocked.

  • Filename when using -Djbo.debugoutput=file

    Hi!
How can I specify which file to save debug traces when using the option "-Djbo.debugoutput=file" in the Run/Debug panel?

    Hi,
looks as if this is not possible
"One tip to help make sure that your ADF Business Components runtime configuration settings are actually getting set to what you think they are, is to run with the ADF Business Components diagnostics turned on -- which you do by adding the Java VM parameter -Djbo.debugoutput=file -- and then grep through the diagnostics files that will be named bc4j*.log in the system temp directory for the ADF configuration property name. The diagnostic output will tell you the value that it is using for each configuration property, and it will tell you where it read that value from (your configuration "client environment", System Property, etc.)."

  • After Effects Crashes when using dynamically linked files

When I try to edit a dynamically linked after effects, After Effects crashes, which then crashes Premiere Pro. I have CS5.5 master. Is this a problem with the after effects file (only 8kb in size) or something wrong with After Effects. The files come up as being linked in Premiere Pro but when I open the After Effects file to do further editing, it just crashes.

You told us zero about your system and your project settings on bothe ends, so this is not going anywhere. Such crashes can have any number of reasons from running out of memory to graphics card issues but we truly cannot know.

  • "Download linked file as".....

Whenever I use Safari 8 on Yosemite to download a file from OWA (Outlook Web Access) via "Download linked file as".....the file downloads as Attachment.ashx (this happens as well using "Download linked file".
This does not happen when using Firefox, Chrome or IE.
Anyone else having this issue and if so have you been able to fix it?
    Thanks

hmm... clicking on both opens up the Save As dialog, which you can change the filename.
    anyhow, doesnt matter.

  • When I download pdf files in Safari I get a black screen.  However, if I open a pdf in Mail it is viewable in Preview.  How do I fix this?

When I download pdf files in Safari I get a black screen.  However, if I open a pdf in Mail it is viewable in Preview.  What is wrong?

    Back up all data.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste (command-V) into the text box that opens, then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
I've seen an unconfirmed report that the "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you might need to remove it as well, if applicable.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

I know nothing about “EndNote”, but allow me to give you some general advice. Your first, commented-out, line (“--section to wait for window to pop up”) indicates that you need to change the basic way you are tackling what you want to do. When writing any script, if you know the name and location of a file or a directory (folder) you should not cause (or allow, or need) your script to open an Open or a Save window -- just use the path that you already know.

Hmmmm, strange you view YouTube in Safari & not FF. Which version of FF are you using?
    Try the following:
    Repair permissions & restart.
Make sure you have the latest versions of Adobe Flash Player Software
QuickTime Preferences > Advanced > MIME Stettings > Miscellaneous.
    Deactivate the "Flash Media" option.

  • "Download Linked file as..." loses filename

I'm having a problem saving gmail attachments.  "Download linked file as..." works fine, but the filename defaults to "0"!  How can I get the original filename in the "save" box?  I just want to save the attachment directly to a drive of my choosing with its original filename.  I know I can open the doc and save from there, but I'd prefer a solution rather than workarounds!
I'm on Maverick and using Safari to access Gmail.

I just checked a pdf and "Download linked file as" does give me option to save where I want for pdf, jpg files and others.

  • Mavericks 10.9.1. Freezes or trackpad becomes slow and unresponsive when viewing downloaded PDF files in Preview.Help!

The earlier post was my first attempt at posting and had some typos. Repeated with typos corrected.
I have a Macbook Pro Retina 13" Late 2013 with preinstalled Mavericks.I now have the 10.9.1 update. Almost from the time of purchase in Nov '13, I have been experiencing freezes and slow & unresponsive trackpad. I have more or less narrowed this symptom as happening when viewing downloaded PDF files. The only option is to force eject, if available or shut down. I spoke to Support as I thought it was a RAM issue and they told me that in Mavericks RAM showing almost full was normal as it uses RAM differently. They took me through some resets and cleaning up which has helped a little but freezing stll happens. This never happened with my Macbook AIr running Lion. Any suggestions?

So a PDF file that you can view in Preview on your MBA causes your new MBP to lock up and/or slow down. Is this right? Also you say more or less narrowed down to PDFs with Preview but does the computer exhibit this behavior with other programs and if so under what conditions? And how much free hard drive space do you have?
Viewing memory use in Mavericks is different than with previous versions of the OS. Today it looks like we need to pay attention to what Apple calls Memory Pressure which is gauged by the bar graph in Activity Monitor and to the Virtual Memory being used. When the memory pressure graph bar gets too high it turns red and that's bad news. Looking at how much memory is being used doesn't help - I have a 16GB computer and with almost nothing running it still shows something like 15.79GB used but the memory pressure graph is just a think green line. So unless you see the memory pressure bar turning red lets not worry about memory usage at the moment.
If among the things AppleCare had you do was reinstall Mavericks then I recommend a trip to the Apple store - and take a problem PDF file with you to demonstrate.

  • "Download linked file as" Error in Safari 8.0.2

When I select "Download linked file as" I see a pop-up window that does not include the actual file name or extension that I am trying to download.
For example, I right click on a link to a .pdf file on a Web site. The resulting pop-up window reveals the following in the Save As field: xid-52654843_1.
This xid prefix is constant, regardless of the file I am trying to download. It has nothing to do with the name of the actual file.
When I use Chrome the feature works fine. The file name and extension of the .pdf file is filled in the Save As field.
    Thanks for your help!

Are you running any Safari extensions that modify the toolbars?
I have the download button in 8.0.2:
It set up that way under Mavericks and Safari seems to have kept the same settings for YO when I upgraded last week.
and this is supposed to reveal the download button on my toolbar?
Take a breath! I believe Dominic is giving you good advice. The download button may not appear until you actually download some to go into the Downloads folder--worth a try.
