Safari just hangs

Every time I open a web page it just hangs I have to constantly refresh over and over

If Safari is getting very slow:
(Presumably you regularly empty your Safari cache by deleting the following file:
Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/cache.db
and clear your History)
Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security, including anti-phishing and redirects) (Full information about Open DNS is here: http://www.opendns.com/home/nobloat )
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
If your computer is part of a network:please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/best_practices/#your_network and follow the advice given.
If you use a Router, make sure it has the latest firmware installed.
One reason for a slowness in page loading may be the 'DNS Pre-fetching' feature of Safari 5.x as is described here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408?viewlocale=en_US
You can cancel DNS pre-fetching by going to Terminal and typing:
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false
You have to restart Safari for it to take effect.
If Safari seems to hang for ages:
If you have a lot of tabs open and/or a lot of pages running Flash, Safari can sometimes 'hang', requiring a restart of Safari. This can often be inconvenient, and as it is rarely Safari itself that is hanging but merely one of its plug-ins, usually Flash, there is a way using Terminal to restart the plug-ins (without restarting Safari and losing your tabs) by quitting the WebPluginHost process:
Open the Terminal from the Utilities folder in /Applications and type
killall -9 WebKitPluginHost
Note that this command kills all Safari plug-ins, not just Flash. All plug-ins should start back up when you reload the page.
Then go back to Safari and refresh any pages that were using the Flash plug-in. This also fixes the Beachball of Death. Try this whenever Safari gets slow or freezes. The latest versions of Flash 10.1 appear to have improved the situation somewhat, but haven't completed eliminated it.
For this and other reasons Apple switched their websites to HTML5 in January 2011:

  • Even on my new MBP Safari just hangs. And on the 2 MacBooks too

Wow. So I've bought myself a MacBook Pro. 2ghz. Up from a 1.67ghz AL PowerBook.
I had posted before with my PB on how Safari just hangs at loading pages. The blue URL bar just hangs at 3/4 of the way. And sits thre for minutes or forever.
My only solution has always been to just do Apple Key and letter R as part of each page I go to in Safari. And this loads the page and it comes up instantly. So it's the initial going to a new page that chokes Safari.
So I upgrade to a 2ghz MacBook Pro and two 2ghz Macbooks.
And wouldn't you know it, Safari does EXACTLY the same thing. Hangs. Chokes. Beach Ball of death too now. ***
And I also had previously posted on visiting the Apple Store and Safari hung up on their machines too.
I keep my Safari cache folder read only. And the Favicon folder also read only. I have an honest 30Mbps cable connection. And the kicker, like before-
Firefox flies and loads pages instantly! With Safari hanging and choking, I'll open Firefox and go to the page Safari is hangin and choking and, BAM. Page loads right up in Firefox. WOW
What is it with Safari Apple? I can't imagine one PC user switching to Mac if on testing the web in an Apple Store and the web "seems so slow" to them. It's the dog Safari.
So as I type this on my new MBP using Firefox, does anyone think Apple will ever address this issue? Others have posted saying they get the exact same thing with their copy of Safari.
Can any imagine Steve in his office using Safari thinking this is the way a browser is supposed to work? He must be using Firefox too.

    No it's Safari.
Here are screen shots of the hang:

I have three people here that this happens too. At different locations. 2 MacBooks and one MacBook Pro. We all updated from 2 iBooks and 1 PowerBook.
And Safari does this. This is how Safari works. If we go to the exact smae sites in Firefox, the sites load instantly. Insantly!!
I think Apple needs to ddress this issue. As I've found here in the discussions, this IS how Safari works many many thousands of users.

P.S.  I cannot think of anything that would make Safari hang on only one site....

There seems to be a few bugs with iCloud Mail at times, so send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

Alright, I figured it out. I found the Preferences.plist in the ~/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration folder. I deleted it and restarted my macbook. Now Safari works!

  • Safari 3.2.1 Update won't apply - system just hangs

I seem to have a problem and although I have looked at various posts on several message boards, I can't find anyone with the same problem, which is:
I have all the latest updates, except for the latest Safari 3.2.1, but when I re-start to install the update, it just hangs.
I've re-started several times, but same problem.
My current version is Version 3.2 (5525.26.12)
and Software Update says that I still need to update to 3.2.1.
I don't have any other issues with current version. I downloaded the 3.2.1 original update a week or two ago and it has been running OK, although I did have a similar problem when I first tried to update to it, but it worked eventually.
    Any ideas ?

    Here's what you should do:
    1. Repair Permissions.
    2. Download and install the 10.5.5 Combo Update.
    3. Download and install Safari 3.2.1. *Do Not Use* the Safari update; delete it.
    4. Repair Permissions again.
    5. Launch Safari, disable the "Warn before visiting a fraudulent web site" feature in Preferences > Security and see if it works normally for you.
    6. If it crashes, post the crash report.

  • Safari stops loading: just hanging

Safari starts loading and then just hangs half-way. I have tried resetting the cache, updating etc. but nothing seems to stop this from happening. Used Chrome and it seemed to works fine: pages load fast, no hanging.
    What is happening to Safari?

    I have same problem!
Using MacBookPro mid 2012 2.9HGz Intel Core i7 8 GB memory, 750GB HD
with OSX 10.8.4 and Safari 6.0.5.

  • Netflix just 'hangs' and won't even open the home page, although if i log in as a guest then I can access it.

Netflix won't even open the home page to let me register and just hangs for ages. I have the same trouble on both safari and firefox but have updated both anyway. I'm guessing this is an 'identity' issue because if I log in as a guest on my own laptop I can open the netflix site, although there are all sorts of parental controls on there that I can't seem to override!
I have un-installed silverlight, tried again but no luck.
I re-installed silverlight. Still no luck
It's not a disaster as I'm still able to watch on my ipad, however it's annoying me and I like a mystery to solve!
    any ideas?

A password reset would certainly be a good idea. However, it could be an iCloud issue. If you Mac matches your user password to your Apple password, it could be that when you initially start up, you don't have an internet connection...
Logging in as guest gets you connected, thus being able to authenticate. So when you change it, either make sure it's stored locally, or run some diagnostics on wifi connection upon startup. Out of interest, are you connected at the login screen (top right next to the time will tell you)?

  • Slow response using internet, just hangs

Not the best at IT and just clicked update when it came up as available without realising what I was doing!  Turns out it was an upgrade to os x 10.9.4.  Since then the laptop has been practically unusable particularily when it comes to safari, it is either really slow getting to a particular page or just doesnt do anything, no matter how long you wait.  Restarting doesnt seem to help, reload view fails as well.  Its strange as sometimes its ok for 10 minutes then starts doing this.  I know this is bad but I have never backed the laptop up so cant restore to previous version.  I am currently looking into which external hard drive to buy so I can start doing regular back ups.  I have run EtreCheck in the hope somebody can help!!  Results below

In Lion, Safari pages hang in full screen mode.  If you exit full screen mode, the next page you intended to view appears.
This happens nearly every time I use Safari.  I will be clicking on links, when it appears to hang.  By exiting full screen mode, upon minimizing the next page I was intending to view appears.  This does not happen on all websites, but many that I visit.

Here's a stupid question, but I'm sure I'm not the only one - how exactly DO you minimize the safari fullscreen mode??  I keep reading about orange or yellow tabs which don't exist, at least on my 27 iMac. Control m doesn't work either. I wish Apple would have a basic 3 or 4 page instruction manual on this. Unless there are major bugs still.  By the way, this is only one of many problems I'm having with Safari.  Occasionally the tool bar just dissappears. And, don't get me started about how the dock in Lion simply stopped accepting some icons, including Firefox. None of these problems happened when I first installed Lion. Each upgrade seems to have more bugs, not less.

  • Safari & Firefox hanging (esp. on facebook & myspace)

Okay, seems I'm not alone here...both Safari and firefox keeping hanging on me (spinning ball of death). In Safari, it seems to come after a message about a flash plug-in not working; in firefox it just hangs. This only started happening two days ago, and once the problem appears the only way I can clear it is by rebooting the mac. Interesting it has only happened to me in facebook and myspace, but I'm a musician so I spend a **** of a lot of time in both these sites.
Now here's the sad bit...I moved over to macs from PCs only 5 months ago, and up to now I've been singing this machine's praises - it is marvellous - but this problem smacks of the sort of thing that happens with the dreaded MS. Anybody able to help me? I'm gutted!

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
Hopefullly this will help... I can feel your frustration.
Uninstall and reinstall a fresh version of Flash Player Plugin.
    Uninstall Flash
    Reinstall Flash
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
from the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
Mac OS: Web Browser Quits Unexpectedly or Stops Responding
Safari add-ons can cause performance issues or other situations
Also, if you are running Safari in 64 bit mode, try running in 32-bit mode instead. Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode. Quit Safari then relaunch.
    And repair disk permissions...
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

Unable to use free version regardless of browser on any machine. I login with adobe id but then the loading screen just hangs. can't get any further - Tried all suggestions like clearing browser caches but no change.
Got a couple of projects i wanted to try this on and if the software works I will probably take a subscription but considering this isn't working at all will look elsewhere.
Also - adobe live chat support is useless.

    Hi,
please share the Adobe ID that you are using with DL-AdobeStory-support<at>adobe<dot>com and we will investigate the issue.

  • IMovie won't open on Mac Pro (Intel, 10.5.3) -- just hangs

I don't normally use iMovie but tried to open it today on my MacPro and strangely it just hangs while launching.
I reinstalled from the discs that came with the computer, but that made no difference. I deleted iPhoto and iMovie preference files, but that made no difference. I've even turned off Little Snitch as I saw on the web that there was a potential conflict there. I've run software upgrade and everything is apparently up to date (iMovie is version 7.1.1) I have also looked at the package contents for iMovie as suggested on another site, but everything seems to be there.
I have no idea why the application won't run. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Is there another conflict between iMovie and any other known applications?
    Thanks

Thanks for the suggestions... tried changing resolution and that had no effect, and I've checked my Perian and DivX installations in System Preferences and both say they are completely up to date. I upgraded Quicktime today to 7.5 before all of this became a problem -- but I don't know how to upgrade iLife. In Software Update everything is completely up to date (eg each of the iLife apps).
Oh well, iMovie is not very useful to me anyway -- just somehow annoying that it fails to work. No point flogging a dead horse!!
Any other ideas gratefully received... many thanks in advance

  • Iphoto 9.3 and Mountain Lion Problems : Cant access my library : rebuilding doesn't work just hangs for hours

My Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard, had hard drive failure so I had to borrow a friends similar machine to access my iPhoto library ( 523 GB) on a 1TB drive after editing the photos and after exporting one folder of images the program quit and then asked me to repair which I tried hung up at 99% and would not open the event thumbnails . I have tried everything even trying to transfer the particular event from that library to a new library using iphoto manager just so I can export my project and send but still no success as it is telling me that it is getting no info from the library, I changed permissions on the drive ..still no success . I restarted Iphoto and it took hours to show the images but all events thumnails said "0" and it shows all the event cover photos as a gray photo with a palm tree in it or something . I tried rebuilding again this morning and the new library says "0" photos and a library size of 7.3 mb
I got my own Macbook 17in back yesterday and downloaded Mountain Lion to my machine and Iphoto 9.3
I tried to open the library which is 523 GB of images that used to work fine before getting an error message saying it needed to be repaired. I tried opening it with Iphoto 9.3 via I photo manager which told be that there were inconsistencies in the library and it needed to be repaired I chose that option and it is now the following day still "rebuilding thumbnails" since last night . This is a huge problem I have missed project deadlines and my income is severely affected by this situation of not being able to access my work. What can I do to fix this, access my files and export my overdue project at this point ?

Terence I find it surprising that you would say use Iphoto Manager after saying that I used it to rebuild using it took me to 99% of the way and just hung. I even spent my $20 and got the latest version 3.8.3  which was supposed to remedy these issues. See below my email to Fat Cat software the makers of Iphoto Manager:
"Email to Fat Cat Software : Re Iphoto problems:
My Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard, had hard drive failure so I had to borrow a friends similar machine to access my iPhoto library ( 523 GB) on a 1TB drive
after editing the photos and after exporting one folder of images the program quit and the asked me to repair which i tried …it hung up at 99% and would not open the event thumbnails .I have tried everything trying to transfer the particular event from the library to a new library using Iphoto Manager just so I can work on my project but still no success as IPLM is telling me that it is getting no info from the library, I changed permissions on the drive ..still no success .
I opened it using IPLM and it took hours to show the images but all events said "0" and it shows all the event cover photos as a gray photo with a palm tree in it or something . I tried rebuilding again this morning and the new library says "0" photos and a library size of 7.3 mb . There
really seems to be a serious problem with Iphoto 9.3 as it
asks you to rebuild or repair the library then IPLM stops at 99% leaving
    the thumbnails
unviewable and just hangs up after that or wont open and there the problems start.
Please advise and give me some viable options on this issue."
Its days later and the support at Fat Cat software emailed me asking a question and are apparently just as floored as I am with this malfunction ..I hope they are working feverishly to address this as my conclusion and solution is as follows :
Using the older version of Iphoto Library Manager when my machine asked me to upgrade and rebuild instead of the first aid function in Iphoto 9.3 did not help but actually corrupted my library and downloading the latest version did not help remedy it either. What I should have done and am now doing is using the Iphoto first Aid function in Mountain Lion and Iphoto 9.3 using option command to rebuild the entire library. So far it is working with no hangups ...it is now rebuilding image version number 6715 and counting with 33000+ images to go ..if this solution really rebuilds then that is the ONLY way to go with this issue which has cost me a lot of time and money in missed deadlines , lost income and lost business . Iphoto and Iphoto Library manager are normally great in what their purposes are and in ease of use and function but whenawry with compatibility in version software issues arise things go terribly awry and the tedious painstaking fixes available that go for days on end  just do not cut it.
