Safari keeps opening links in new window instead of current

Hi
I have an iMac, everytime I click on a web link in Safari it opens it in a new window instead of the current window. So after a few minutes internet browsing I have loads & loads of windows open!!!
I have the Safari preferences set to open in 'Same Page', but no joy.
Can you help?
Thanks

Hi
Welcome to Apple Discussions
The Safari Preference Tab panel pertains in part to opening links from outside of Safari, e.g. Mail, or for using a command key to create a new tab. Within Safari, if a link is coded to open another window, it will do just that unless a command key is used, regardless of what's selected in the Tab panel.
With that said, for complete control over tabs, install 3rd party add-on Glims. Once installed, you'll find Glims' preferences as a separate panel within Safari Preferences (you may have to click on the directional arrows at the end of the Preference Panels to access it). In the Tabs misc panel, select "open link in a new tab". That will accomplish what you want, i.e. opening a new tab when a link within Safari is coded to open a new window.
You'll also find a number of very useful features in the other Glims sub-preference panel enhancing Safari usefulness.

  • Itouch safari only opens links in new windows

It only started a little while ago but my itouch suddenly ONLY opens link in new windows which can get frustrating. Anyone know if this is normal now or if there is a problem I can fix?

HI and Welcome to Apple Discussions...
From the Safari Menu Bar click Safari/Preferences and select Tabs from the Menu. Perhaps your settings changed after the update.
Also, if you didn't repair disk permissions after the Safari 5 update, it would be beneficial to do that.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • FF opening link in new window instead of new tab

When I click the option to open a link in a new tab, it opens the link in a new window instead. What's up with that?

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
*Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
If you have many extensions then first enable half of the extensions to test which half has the problem.<br />
Continue to divide the bad half that still has the issue until you find which one is causing it.

  • IE11 restricted users opens links in new window instead new tab

    Hello,
Have a problem. All restricted users, on several machines when try to open link in new tab, link opens in new window instead new tab. Pressing ctrl+K or ctrl+T works fine. Resetting browser setting didn't help. Red cross near resetting user customizations.
Administrators don't have this problem. OS: Windows 7 x64 + IE 11. Machine belongs to workgroup. All available updates are installed. Is there any decision?
    Thanks

    Hi,
This might be related with the UAC settings. See
    this thread.
How are the restriction of the users configured here?

  • Put back "Open Link in New Window" first and default, rather than "Open Link in New Tab" in Safari 6.1

I do not like the order of the context menu changes in Safari 6.1.  I have become accustomed to using "Open Link In New Window" first in the context list, rather than the new "Open Link In New Tab".  I do not wish to use Tabs.  How may I remove this?

Well, I solved it just after I posted this.  I opened up the Safari Preferences, then went to the TABS section, and set "Open pages in tabs instead of windows: to NEVER", and unchecked "⌘-click opens a link in a new tab".   That set it back to open in new windows.
Tabs work if I am making quick tabs to refer to something.  Horrible if I want to compare two websites side by side.  So, by disabling the auto TAB function, I'm back to the way I prefer my browser to work, rather than the way something thinks I ought to use it.
Don't care about having all my browsers behavior the same.  If I wanted that, I would have run those browsers.

  • When I open a link in a website it opens as a new window instead of just staying on the same page

In any website, when I click on a link it opens in a new window.this even occurs in google when I click any of the results it opens in a new window instead of just staying on the same page.tabs work fine however, it is just links on websites.

Did you check the search settings on the Google Search Settings page?
    * http://www.google.com/preferences?hl=en
''Where results open: Open search results in a new browser window.''
You can set the browser.link.open_newwindow pref to 1 to open links by default in the current tab.
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/browser.link.open_newwindow (3)
You can set this pref to 0 (zero) to do this for all widows opened via JavaScript.

  • When I right-click a link, and choose "Open in new tab", it opens in a new window instead. How can I fix this?

So I have Firefox open, and I've tried to open tabs by right clicking and choosing "open in new tabs", but it opens in a new window instead. And yes, there are no problems with being able to open new tabs by pressing the ctrl t.

The Ask Toolbar is causing that in the Firefox 3.6.13+ versions. Uninstall that extension.
There are a couple of places to check for the Ask toolbar:
    * Check the Windows Control panel for the Ask Toolbar - http://about.ask.com/apn/toolbar/docs/default/faq/en/ff/index.html#na4
    * Also check your list of extensions, you may be able to uninstall it from there - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Uninstalling+add-ons

This code in userChrome.css will move "Open Link in New Window" to the top of the context menu.
    <pre>@namespace url("<a href="http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul">http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul</a>"); /* only needed once */
    #contentAreaContextMenu &gt; * { -moz-box-ordinal-group: 2; }
    #context-openlink { -moz-box-ordinal-group: 1 !important; }</pre>
the user jay_ff shows how to do it using the Menu Editor Add-on
    1. Install the Menu Editor add-on from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/menu-editor/ .
    2. After the installation, go to Firefox> add-ons (or simply use Ctrl+Shift+A)
    3. Go to the Menu Editor "Options"
    4. In the "Main context menu," simply grab the "Open link in New Tab" and place it below the "Open Link in New Window"
    5. and Voila! You may also change other menu options if you want to!
I tried jay_ff method first and found that indeed changing the Main Context Menu did cause the hotlink context menu to change as well.

  • Open link in new window?  Anyone figured it out yet?

I have tried looking over some past topics concerning this issue, but only found a few and it appears that it wasn't figure out on how to open a link in a new window. I started creating a web portfolio for me, and I have some videos I wish to open in a new window instead of just having them on one of the pages. I've tried viewing the page source in firefox, copied the code, and inserted the target="_blank" code after the hyperlink, but after I do that it messes up the code somehow and when i try to open the html page in firefox all I see is the code. Has anyone else figured this out?

Well, I found a website that showed me how to do it... If anyone else needs it then here it is: http://www.rowan-cottage.co.uk/Site/Target_Blank.html#Summary

  • Open Link in New Window fails

It seems after a while, now Firefox 4.0.1 has a issue with the "Open Link In New Window" option fails to load the web page. It opens the new window, but does not load the web page that you click on. Instead it opens a new window with a blank tab.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).
*Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

  • Open link in new window inSafari  5.0.1

Without doing anything I know of I no longer have "OPEN LINK IN NEW TAB" when I right click over a link. Also when I right click "OPEN LINK IN NEW WINDOW" I get a blank TAB that says "UNTITLED".
    Thanks for any help

    HI,
From your Safari Menu Bar click Safari/Empty Cache.
    Relaunch Safari.
If that didn't make a difference, troubleshoot the Safari .plist file.
Open a Finder window. Select your Home Folder in the Sidebar on the left. It has a small house icon. Then open the Library folder then the Preferences folder.
Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop. Now launch Safari. If Tabs work as they should, them move the .plist file to the Trash.

  • I want to eliminate or control popup windows that have no relevance and start with "open link in new window" . How do I control or eliminate. It is a nuisance.

When I am searching the web and click on an item, I get a pop up window that contains 6 choices beginning with "open link in new window". Most of the time this a nuisance and I want to get rid of it, but it follows me all over the page and keeps popping up when I click on the same item again. If I don't want to use it, how can I make sure it doesn't reappear?
Also, another question. Firefox keeps asking me to upgrade to Firefox 3.6.19, but when I try, it will download. What gives? I have a Mac Pro with OSX version 10.6.7.

It sounds that you are opening the right-click context menu, maybe by pressing the mouse button for too long.

  • Firefox keeps opening things in new windows

Every time I click to open something in a new tab, it opens in a new window instead. I checked to see if I'd accidentally changed my options to make things open in new windows instead of tabs, but I hadn't. Also, every time I start Firefox, three windows pop up instead of just one. They seem like little things, but it's really irritating.

    Hi Fantasmically,
You might want to take a look at [[Firefox keeps opening many tabs or windows]]. It seems to be spot on for the issue you are describing.
You might also want to try starting Firefox in [[Safe Mode]]. If you don't have the issue while all of your add-ons, extensions, and themes are disabled, you can try adding them back in one by one until you find the culprit. You should look at the [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Troubleshooting-extensions-themes Extensions and Themes troubleshooting guide ] and the [[Troubleshooting plugins]] article as well.
    Hopefully this helps!

  • Using firefox 14.0.1. Loading a link using right-click and "Open Link In New Window", results in new window opening but address bar does not show URL..

Using firefox 14.0.1. Loading a link using right-click and "Open Link In New Window", results in new window opening but address bar does not show URL. However, if I right click on a link and select "Open Link In New Tab", the Tab shows URL in address bar. So it's working when it's a New Tab but not a New Window.
