Safari makes me NOT want to get a Mac

I have a friend with a Mac who likes to tempt me into switching from windows to Mac. I've always looked on Mac with admiration. However, my experience with Safari has reinforced all the reasons why I haven't switched.
Like everything Apple, it's immaculately styled. The top sites and history flow are very cool. The UI is nice. Love the bubble search highlight. The Aqua buttons, the blue highlight around the active control, all are elegant and just right and show once again how windows is just ugly (though it has improved with Vista and 7).
But feature-wise, it just doesn't compare to other browsers, such as Opera or Firefox. It's closer to chrome, which is a much newer program. But it's not close technically to chrome -- chrome is much more stable with its one process per tab model, is very fast to start, and fast at everything, and doesn't chew up CPU inexplicably while doing nothing.
Safari doesn't even have simple features like restore tabs on startup, default zoom level. It remembers passwords but it only seems to remember one password for each site. If you log in with several different login / passwords it only remembers one.
Then there is Apple's penchant for dictating what its users do. Earlier, Apple flirted with tabs on top. People complained, some b/c they just don't like it, others b/c they had some problem with how it was implemented. So Apple put it back on bottom, no options, rather than refining it and making it an option. chrome, incidentally, has made tabs on top work supremely well.
You may say it's not fair to judge Apple by its Safari for windows, but I see a lot of performance and stability issues on the Safari for Mac group too. The common response seems to be to tell people to clean up their system, which is rather funny. Here I thought only Windows suffers from OS rot.
And it's been months since Safari has been updated. I'm still waiting for the high CPU use while in gmail fix.
I expect Apple to pay more attention to its software because, let's face it, Mac users don't have as many choices in software, so Apple is a major software supplier for Macs. Furthermore, since itunes and safari for windows are pretty much the only exposure PC users have to Apple on the software front, they really should do it right.
Insanely great this isn't.
I use safari for one and one reason only: I like the way it does font smoothing a 1000x better than native Windows font smoothing. In fact, I wish Apple could release software that replaces windows font smoothing system wide!

Top Sites and the Cover Flow for Both History and bookmarks is not only cool, but useful.
Safari doesn't have a 'restore tabs on startup' feature, but it does have a 'Reopen All Windows from Last Session' under the History menu. It just doesn't happen automatically.
I'm not sure about Zoom Levels, as I've never had to deal with them.
You are wrong about Safari remembering only one password.
It's really simple, like nearly everything else Apple makes.
Just go to the site you want, and enter the second username and password.
When asked to save the password, hit 'yes'.
Then, when you go to the site, you'll see the last username you used auto-filled.
If that's not the one you want, begin typing in the username, and select the one you want.
Safari will auto-fill the password.
I use this for my Google accounts all the time.
I'm sorry you don't like Apple's style of doing it the way the majority of people want.
I'm not saying having an option would be wrong, but Apple didn't just eliminate the option because some people didn't want it. There are problems with the way Apple put tabs on the top that Chrome does not suffer. Rather than complaining, why don't you search and learn a bit about them (I've provided links for you below, though). No one said Apple is giving up, they may reintroduce them once they've figured out how to best use them; I'm sorry you like having UI problems, though.

Performance and stability aren't anywhere near an issue on OS X. I have never seen a user who has been playing around with things, or has made mistake using their Mac, that has had problems with software. Normally it is something they did or did not do, or a sit they are going to.
Stepping aside from Safari onto your other 'reason' not to use Safari, OS X does not suffer form 'OS rot' as windows does. Quite a few years ago, Apple decided to throw out OS 9, and make OS X a completely different system. This eliminated OS 9's problems, and did create new ones, yes, but Apple has done wonderfully at combating them. At the few problems that do exist, as they always will because no one's coding is perfect, Apple released Snow Leopard. It wasn't a major OS update per se, but it cleaned up the coding and made the entire system not only more stable, but 64-bit (with support for 32-bit), a feat with Microsoft with all its money has yet to accomplish. Microsoft, on the other hand, while Apple threw out OS 9, just kept on building on the same model. Windows Vista, originally as Longhorn, was supposed to do something similar to this, but in the end they gave up and decided to just build on the old system. Have you looked at the Registry in windows?
As for what you are saying about choice, I hope you realise that all major internet browsers run on OS X. Even Microsoft's IE. For any software included with OS X, there are tons of other options you can find online. Have you tried using Google?
P.S. The other person is right: this should not be in the Safari section, nor should it be a question.

    Think about it...
The reason they won't use email is so they can "stretch the truth" and get away with it.  They can tell you anything you want to hear over the phone and deny it all later.  In these forums, posts can magically disappear.
With email, they are caught between a rock and a hard place, so it will never happen.  Things said in email are much harder to go back on.

Settings > General > Passcode Lock
You're going to really regret this if you ever lose your iPhone.

If your cellular plan/carrier allows use of the iPhone as a hot spot, yes. Verizon does on some plans, at least in my area, but I can't speak for other providers.Set up on the iPhone is in the Settings App > Personal Hotspot.

I want to get a Mac and was wondering if i could trade my macbook in and pay the difference

Apple does not do trade ins of old computers. Your best bet is to sell it yourself and apply what you get to your purchase.
eBay and CraigsList offer good venues for selling.
    Best of luck.

  • I'm not able to get my mac os 10.6.8 to print to a Savin C2525, any suggestions?

I'm not able to get my Mac OS 10.6.8 to print to a Savin C2525. I've loaded the drivers and after checking for updates and tried to add the printer. The 1st time I tried, it started printing and I could see the file name on the first page, after it printed some type unknown to me, it was blank page after page until I had to literally unplug the printer to get it to stop. I deleted the printer and tried to reinstall and now it is pausing and saying unable to find the printer.....
    Any suggestions?

Try later. I just checked mine and got Software's up to date.

I had a skype number that expired almost a year ago, but I keep getting autobilled for it.  Fortunately I did not have sufficient funds in my pay pal account.  How do I deactivate this?  I want to get a new number - but not until I can resolve this.  Please help!

    Hi, Eastriver,
Thank you for your further explanation.  The fact that you do not see the Skype Number subscription on your Skype account details and purchase history is mystifying; please contact Skype customer service to sort this.
The process ought to be as simple as cancelling a subscription:

  • We had a contaminated email and now we cannot send emails . our service provider thinks problem in 'mail' settings but did not want to get into that area. Can you advise how we look into this

we had a contaminated email and now we cannot send emails.  Our service provider advises that 'Mail' settings may be compromised.  but were not willing to get into resetting.   How can this be fixed ?

Not exactly sure what you mean by contaminated, but there is currently no known e-mail that could impact the Apple Mail application as you have described.
Without knowing who your e-mail provider is and what type of account (IMAP or POP3) we can't advise you as to what those settings might be.
One way to fix it would be to delete the account from Apple Mail Preferences->Accounts and add it back.

  • HT1386 I need to backup/sync my husbands iphone for the second time only.  He does not want to get my contacts from my outlook contacts.  How do I prevent this from happening?

I need to backup/sync my husband's iphone.  How do I do this without connecting to my outlook contacts?  The phone starts syncing immediately upon plug in.  How do I stop that?

Are both using the same email address for Contacts?
Settings---> Mail, Contacts, Calendars---> Accounts (select the account that you have Contacts clicked on)
Then on the MBP, make sure that the Contacts is using the same email address. Idk where to go for that at the moment.
This doesn't have to be your AppleID. But they both have to match.

  • I want to get my mac cleaned how will that cost?

Do I have to make an appt to get it cleaned or just show up? I also want to know the exact amount to clean it?
    Plz and Thank You

Are you talking about a physical cleaning of a MBP or 'cleaning' the HDD?  In either case, there is no reason you cannot do it yourself.
One must make an appointment at an Apple genius bar.  Diagnostics are free. repairs are not.  Only the Apple technicians can give you prices.  This is a user to user forum and no one here could give you a definitive answer in that regards.
    Ciao.

Finally could this be a bad move.
    Just looking for some help.

    Hi, shorowich -
Your Dual 450MHz model is a G4 (Gigabit Ethernet) model.
    ...available built-in memeory 448m...
That indicates how much RAM is unused, not how much is installed. The important number in that regard in About This Computer is the number on the line labelled "Built-in Memory:", which is the physical RAM in the machine.
not sure on how to look up firmware I am on.
You can check to see what the version is of the firmware on your machine. Open Apple System Profiler - it should be in the Apple menu. On the first page of that, System Profile, scroll down to the section "Production Information" - the current firmware version is coded on the line labelled "Boot ROM version:". For example, on my G4/500 that info states $0004.18f5, which means that my machine has a firmware version of 4.1.8.
One of the nice things about firmware updaters is that if they are not needed (i.e., the firmware is already up to date), the installer for the firmware update will state that and refuse to run any further.
You can download the firmware updater for that model from here -
    Article #120068 - G4 Firmware Update 4.2.8
    or the disk space.
Do a Get Info on the icon of the hard drive. To do that, click once on the hard drive's icon (not on its name) on the dektop; the icon should highlight to indicate it is selected. Then select Get Info from the File menu, or press Command-I ("I" for Info).
In the Get Info window will be some information about the drive. The important pieces of that are the numbers on these lines -
        Capacity -
        Available -
as to which 10, I hope to get to the best one for me.
You machine is supported by Apple for all versions of OSX released to date, including the latest, OSX 10.4 (Tiger). I would not go earlier than OSX 10.2 (Jaguar).
Your machine will need to meet the following -
    • Firmware - updated to 4.2.8 if it is not already there.
    • RAM (physical, or actual, memory) - For OSX 10.2 and OSX 10.3, a minimum of 128MB; for OSX 10.4, a minimum of 256<B. These numbers are on the thin side; doubling them is a more realistic minimum, particularly if you will be using Classic. More is better. Your G4 (GE) model can hold a max of four 512MB modules, for a total of 2.0GB of RAM. Although OS 9 can use only 1.5GB, OSX can use it all.
    • Free space on the hard drive. For OSX 10.2 and OSX 10.3, 3 to 5GB of free space is good. OSX 10.4 needs about 8GB of free space. These numbers include allowance for OSX's need to use free space for swap files, its equivalent of virtual memory, and on-the-fly file defragging.

  • Can I reload a totally "clean" version with nothing brought forward from the past. I was hacked and don't want to get Vorstan automatically on my system? Thanks

I got infected with Vorstran (or Vorstan?) many months ago. I'd love to reload Firefox now that I have everything straightened out on my computer, but in the past when I had to reload Firefox, all my old book marks, came back. (They must be saved to load for me the next time I heed to reload??) Not wanting to get Vorstran back on a reload, I have hesitated to try to reload as when it comes in, it infects all browsers, overwrites my backups and generally locks itself in the system Can I get a totally clean version of Firefox to load to completely start over?? I don't want to bring anything forward from the past at all. No book marks, favorites, folders, nothing. Can that be done somehow so I can finally again use my favorite browser? My old email that is now closed, was "[email protected]". I had to change it to the current one "[email protected]" How would I go about getting a totally clean version of firefox? Thanks

    Hi
    if you are absolutely, 100%, completely certain that you want to start from scratch (after having made sure that your system is clean of the malware);
    To completely remove your old profile, you must manually delete the Firefox folder;
    # Click the Windows Start button, and select Run….
    # Type in %APPDATA% in the Run prompt then click OK.
    # Open the Mozilla folder.
    # Delete the Firefox folder.
Next, install a clean copy of Firefox from ([https://www.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/new/ link]).
    Welcome back, we've missed you.
