Safari of my Macbook (on WiFi) suddenly fails to connect to the Internet.  A popup window message says another device on the network is using my computer's IP address.

But then there was still no Internet access even after I have disconnected all other home computers (a total of four including the Macbook and one iMac desktop.  For simplicity, I shall categorically called them Mac hereafter unless otherwise specified.  The Macs are operating on WiFi.).
The window message recommends changing the IP of either the Macs or the other device.  The latter of course does not apply because I don't think the other device is one of my computers.
My questions:
(1) Why did that happen suddenly since the Mac and other computers on the WiFi was working fine in the morning (as well as days before) and then all of a sudden an unknown device is using my computer's IP?  As far as I (we) can remember, we did not do any thing unusual this morning nor had we downloaded any special programs.
(2) How do I change the IP since it requires Internet acess to do it and since I can't access the Internet on the Mac?
(3) I am almost sure the problem is not caused by the Internet service because when I connected the Ethernet cable from the DSL modem to an old Windows PC, I got Internet via Internet Explorer.  [I am actually sending out this message via IE on my PC.]  However, when I cennected the Ethernet line from the modem to a WiFi router (Airport Extreme) and then connect the router and the old PC, I did not get Internet on either the Mac nor the PC.  Similarly, there was no Internet on both Mac and PC If I connect Ethernet only between the modem and the router but not between PC and router.  So, the question is whether a third unknown party has gotten hold of my Mac IP address and is trying to break into the Mac?  Can it steal my personal info?
(4)  How can I repair the Mac now and prevent future recurrences?  Is changing the IP address the way to do it?  (But like I said before I had tried but could not change the IP because I did not have Internet access on the Mac.  Is there an alternative method?)
(5) I wonder if a computer's IP address remains constant if you don't change it.  The reason I am asking this question is because the aforesaid window message on the Macbook--not sure about the iMac--shows a different IP address--a few numerical digits were changed--almost every time it pops up following every failure trial of mine to access the Internet.  Was the Macbook trying to change the IP for me or was there some thing not right?

Re: Another device on the network is using your computer's IP address.
This message/problem was occuring intermittently for me in a household with two MacBooks accessing one Airport extreme.  Rebooting the modem and router would only temporarily fix the issue for me, so I spoke with a friend who works for Apple and it seems that the Airport Extreme settings were at the root of our particular issue.
The router(Airport Extreme) recieves only one IP address from the modem and in order to allow it to share the IP address with two computers at once, the solution in my case was through:
Applications>Utilities>Airport Utility>Manual Setup>Internet
under Internet Connection- Select "share a public IP address"
under NAT, check the box for "enable NAT Port Mapping Protocol"
(this will allow the sharing of one public IP address with multiple devices)
if this is a new setting, then click "Update" and the Airport Extreme should reboot itself with new settings applied.
When all else is working properly, this is a satisfactory solution in my case.

Since installing Yosemite I am kicked out of the network on a regular basis. Originally this only happened when on Skype which is bloody annoying but now it happens all the time. Each time I receive the error message:
Another device on the network is using your computer’s IP address
Is there anything I can to to fix this. For example I cannot find which other device is doing this.

If it on DHCP its a bit odd that you get that message(that your router rejecting giving you the IP its giving you kind of thing or your mac seeing another machine( a ghost)-which would be consistent(after all it nearly that time of year) There is a  long thread on here with several wifi resolve solutions including the SMC reset(which people had to do for Mavericks so its not really something new. A lot of people seems to have been able to reset things and get a stable wifi and everything settles down for them.

  • My airport extreme is a little over  a  year old.  All of a sudden, we cannot connect to the network with the password.  I am the only administrator and have not changed the password.  The signal shows strong but no connection.  It is not the modem.

Airport extreme suddenly stopped "accepting" password.  The signal appears strong -- just will not accept a log on.  No changes have been made.  It is not the modem.  Have replaced the airport with my old linksys and wifi works fine.  Is there a way to "reset" it and start over.  We've unplugged it (airport) for 30 minutes and still the same result.

To do a factory reset, unplug the Extreme and push in the small round reset button on the back with a straightened paper clip or point of a pen and hold it in while plugging it back in - when the light starts to blink fast, release the button - then wait for the light to blink slowly - this indicates that the factory reset has completed - you can now re-configure the Extreme from scratch.

    Greetings,
I have been having connectivity problems with my ThinkPad T60p. As a result, I removed and re-installed the network drivers.
At this point, when I turn on the wireless, I can see all of the available networks, but when I choose an open network, anyone, the network connection process starts, almost completes, and then, I get the following error:

If the technician at the shop is competent, he has given you a diagnosis that should have identified the problem.  You could run the Apple Hardware Test to verify the findings:
    https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201257
Note the Apple Hardware Test is not definitive.
Go to the iFixit.com and Powerbookmedic.com web sites.  They have parts and installation instructions.  To install an Airport card is fairly easy.

  • Macbook Pro suddenly will not connect to the internet via ethernet cable.

I know this is a long shot... but I figured I would give it a try.
My macbook pro suddenly does not connect to the internet via ethernet cable. Please bear with me, as I am not very tech-savvy - I will try my best to describe the symptoms!
I connect to the internet via ethernet (we don't have wifi). It was working before I went to work, and when I came home I suddenly couldn't get anything to work (I know everyone says this, but I truly didn't mess with anything). Internet browsers just think for awhile and then turn up the 'You are not connected to the internet' error.
I went into my network preferences and curiously, the 'Ethernet' shows a green dot and says 'connected'. However it says 'Authentication server is not responding' underneath the last part that says '802.1X: WPA: eduroam' (I think that is my user profile).
When I go into my 'security' settings I can see that my firewall is off, so that shouldn't be causing any problems.
I've tried restarting the router and computer itself many times. Diagnostics just gets to a certain point and reports back 'Network Diagnostics cannot fix the current networking problems.' I've also tried switching to a different ethernet cable, and I tried both cables out on a PC laptop and it connected without issue.  Additionally, I brought my macbook along to a friend's house and it connected to his wifi just fine, so the problem appears to just be with ethernet connections.
I know it's hard to troubleshoot this kind of thing without being there and having a look at the computer yourself, but any tips wouild be greatly appreciated.

As I mentioned above, I am not very tech savvy so I have no idea why a wireless protocol would be showing up there, I'm just listing everything I see in hopes that someone might know something I can try. This is why I am asking for help here - I'm not sure what has happened that has made me unable to connect, especially since it seemingly occured while nobody was using the computer.
I guess I should clarify that I'm not a total hillbilly- normally my firewall is set to 'on', but I set it to 'off' to try and troubleshoot the issues here as I was told that sometimes it can interfere with the computer's ability to connect to the internet. If this is not the case and firewall does not affect anything, I will turn it back on while I try to fix this.
I have tried the method you mentioned above a few times - I actually contacted my ISP earlier this week and they recommended resetting the router like that. They didn't mention any known network issues.

  • My iPad Mini with retina display suddenly will not connect to the Internet. It shows full wifi bars, yet no web pages will load. My Internet is working with all other apple devices in my house. The iPad also no longer works with celluar data.

My iPad Mini with retina display suddenly will not connect to the Internet. It shows full wifi bars, yet no web pages will load. My Internet is working with all other apple devices in my house. The iPad also no longer works with celluar data. I'm not sure what has happened. It was working fine a few hours ago. I have tried resetting it, ive restarted my browser etc. I tried to erase all data from my Ipad but I can't do that because it needs to sign into my Apple ID and use the Internet!

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are drooping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

If no known networks are available, you will
be asked before joining a new network."
    2) Remove unwanted networks from the list of "known" networks under

Do you mean the new, tall ones just released?
Try just re-selecting the drive as the destination.
If that doesn't help, try a hard reset of the Airport per Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ (if you do have the new model, that article may not apply to it. See the Setup Guide that came with it).
If still no help, try a "full reset" of Time Machine, per #A4 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

  • Balkin AC1000 DB fails to connect to the internet

I have a 2009 MacBook Pro 15" and I recently moved to a new town living in student accomodation. Each room has an ethernet port which connects directly to an extended LAN network. When I connect my mac directly to the ethernet port the internet works perfectly, I am even able to share the connection over wifi so that my iPhone and iPad are able to connect to the internet.
I bought a good router so that I could generate my own private network from the extended LAN without losing too much of the 100 mb/s speed from direct connection. When I connect the router to the ethernet port in room (the modem), im able to connect to the wifi network, and in my settings I have a green light under wifi for internet access, IP address and everything else - except there is no internet access. I can open safari and chrome and nothing connects to the internet.
I am also not able to access the internet when I connect the laptop to the router via ethernet cable, while the router is also connect to the modem via ethernet cable.
When im connected to the router over wifi im able to access http://router/ despite the CD programs (belkin router setup) not being compatible with OS Mavericks so im still able to set the router up. I spoke with tech support and they said i needed to manually set up the router using these steps (I had tried it before except for cloning the MAC address) so i gave it a shot and still nothing.
    1. Press the Reset button at the back of the router for 30 seconds while it is powered on. Then unplug it from power for 1 minute afterward.
    2. Plug the router to the modem and plug the main computer to the router's port 1.
    3. Open a browser and type http:/router or http://192.168.2.1 on the Address bar. If it will ask you for a password, just leave it blank and hit OK/Submit.
    4. Under the Internet WAN, click MAC Address. Click the Clone button to Clone Computer's MAC Address and hit Apply Changes.
    5. Go to Wireless >Channel and SSID, change the SSID to any name you want your network to be and hit Apply Changes.
    6. Go to Security. Set the Security Mode to WPA-WPA2 Personal mode and enter a wireless password (should be at least 8 characters, no spaces and special characters) and click Apply Changes.
    7. Unplug the router from power for 1 minute and restart the computer to check the connection.
I feel like it should be quite simple considering i can turn my mac into a router, but I cant seem to turn my router into a working router.
    Any ideas?

I may resort to that, once i figure it out ( i tried messing with DHCP and i eventually had to restore the router to its factory settings because i could no longer connect to it).
Ive noticed now that the firmware is now out of date (or always was) v 1.00.05 is the version im on, however v 1.00.28 is available for download off the belkin website, which I downloaded.
Problem I have now is that when accessting http://router/ while connected over wifi, the firmware update page doesnt recognise the file type and says "the file type or version is incorrect" and so the firmware doesnt update.
Annoyingly, it is the correct version/file type.
I hope all i need to do is get the firmware updated...
