Safari "Private" at bottom left of Safari screen?

What is "Private" (at bottom left of Safari screen) used for?  When tapped the Safari header darkens.

Safari can keep your browsing history private. When you turn on private browsing, Safari doesn’t remember the pages you visit, your search history, or your AutoFill information, so your partner cannot see where you have been, but you must also remember to also turn off acceptance of cookies.
In all other respects Private Browsing is not as private as you might think:
http://www.switchingtomac.com/tutorials/how-to-make-safaris-private-browsing-fea ture-actually-private/
http://www.insanely-great.com/news.php?id=9054
and then Apple's own advice from here: http://www.apple.com/pro/tips/privacy_safari.html
"Note that the Private Browsing option does not prevent Safari from collecting cookies (the preference files automatically generated by many websites). The Reset Safari option clears all cookies. If you want to delete only certain ones, choose Preferences from the Safari menu, click the Security tab, and then click Show Cookies. You can select and delete individual cookies from the list that appears. Careful, though — if you’re a frequent web user, this list can be very, very long."

  • Bottom-left part of screen loose, also no longer connects to Wi-Fi

First, the whole bottom-left of the screen of my brand-new 32gb iPod Touch is loose, and can easily be pushed in. There is also a bleeding effect of light from behind the screen. Will this be a problem? I've only had it since Christmas, so would I be able to get it replaced(for the money spent on this, there shouldn't be any problems like this)? I can't bring it to any apple store either, as there are none for thousands of kilometers.
Also, yesterday I connected my iPod to the computer to charge it, and now it no longer connects to my network. What gives?
So far, I've had more headaches than enjoyment from this...

Call Apple support and arrange for a replacement/repair.

  • Why does my cursor suddenly jump to the bottom left of my screen?

Using a Magic Trackpad with a Macbook 5.1 running Snow Leopard.
Occassionally I'll click and the cursor will suddenly jump to the bottom left of the screen. (Sometimes opening the App Store or flicking to Finder!)
    Anyone got any ideas?

I've had this problem since I bought it. I use a Mac Pro and the Magic Track Pad has become an $80 coaster. It's erratic and impossible to use for more than a few minutes. Good luck getting an answer, I've been looking for some time and then gave up.

  • New Macbook Pro w/ Retina: Random definitions pop-up from the bottom left of my screen when dictionary isn't even open

My OS is 10.9.3 and I've only had it for a month or so.
I'll be on Firefox or the desktop and without touching the mouse or keyboard or anything 'var' appears highlighted in yellow at the bottom left corner of my screen and a speech bubble will define it. The definition matches the one for 'var' in the built-in dictionary but I very rarely use it and have not had it open while this has happened.
It happens about once a week and the word defined has been different 1 or 2 times but mostly its just 'var'. I haven't seen anyone else with this problem and it seems very strange to me. The Macbook also freezes occasionally or has periods of very slow loading; something which never happened with my old Mac White. Do I have a virus or something? What can I do about this?
Any help would be much appreciated.

    This is not a virus.
I assume you're seeing something like this?
Is it appearing over the word "var" appearing in text that is on the screen, or is it floating around somewhere totally inappropriate, almost as if someone had grabbed it and moved it somewhere?
If it's actually appearing over real text, you may be accidentally triggering it. If you tap the trackpad with three fingers with the cursor over a word, that causes this dictionary pop-up to appear.
On the other hand, if it's appearing randomly in weird places, it may simply be a glitch in your system. Try restarting the computer. If it keeps coming back, it's probably caused by some third-party software installed on your system.

  • One of my app icons appear on bottom left of lock screen

I have the 5C with  with iOS 8.1.2   Randomly, one of my apps will appear in gray at the bottom left on my lock screen.   If I swipe up (like you could with the camera) it will ask me to unlock the phone then will launch the app.   Why is this happening?  HOw do I remove it?  It only happens with one app.    If I restart it will go away for a little while, then randomly appears another time.  It happens when I am not in the app at all and it is completely closed, and not running in the background.   Strangest thing.  Anyone know how to fix it??

It is my bank's app, which I will prefer not to name.  My phone is verizon.  not sure what you mean by jailbroken.

  • Dark area on bottom left side of screen

This problem has been occuring for several weeks now. The problem occurs on and off.
I have notice a very large darkened spot on my LCD extending from the bottom left corner diagonally to the middle of the display. I can still see "through" the spot to whatever it is sitting on top of.
Again, sometimes the spot is there and other times it is not. I have had this PowerBook for a year and two months. What is going on?
    Thanks!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions, Chase.
From your description it sounds like the screen on your PowerBook is suffering from uneven illumination. Unfortunately this kind of problem only seems to get worse. Usually the problem will be visible at any brightness setting except maximum, especially on light (or white) backgrounds. Ultimately it can reach a point where the problem is permanently visible.
An LCD screen can often display some kind of uneven illumination, which is considered normal, when it has not yet warmed up. The warming up period usually takes a few minutes (my PBs take about 5 minutes). If the uneven illumination continues beyond this period then the screen is most likely defective.
Normally the fix is to replace the screen and inverter board, covered under warranty if it can be replicated by the Apple engineers. I have found that the best way of demonstrating the problem to service personnel is to switch the desktop background to white and the screen to half brightness. A white background can be set in 'Desktop & Screen Saver' within System Preferences by choosing the "Solid White", which is the last option just to the right of the last visible option ("Solid Mint").
However, unless you have the AppleCare Protection Plan or some other form of insurance, it will be an expensive repair as your PB's standard one year warranty has expired.

  • The number 63 is highlighted in an orange box on the bottom left of the screen.

I think that this number refers to the number of times that I have opened something on the internet. I can eliminate it by clicking on close 63 times but I think that there is an easier way to close sites I have opened. I believe that having this many sites open causes my computer to operate more slowly.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.
    See:
    * [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]]
    * [[Troubleshooting plugins]]
If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.
    * Use "Disable all add-ons" on the [[Safe mode]] start window to disable all extensions.
    * Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")

  • Cannot Attachment Mail by clicking on "Attachment" button. Checkbox on bottom left of screen

I've saw a similar error like this in this discussion thread (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4178118?start=0&tstart=0) and I've tried the solution but it still doesn't work.
Basically, what I'm encountering is that whenever I want to attach a file using Mail by clicking on the Attachment (paper clip) icon, Mail will hang for a little while and then, this checkbox with the words "Send Windows-Friendly attachment" will appear on the bottom left of the screen (see screenshot). I don't even know whether there is supposed to be a Finder window that's supposed to appear because I have never ever seen that before (maybe I did before upgrading to Mountain Lion but I don't remember...)
I can, however, drag and drop whatever attachments I want into Mail and it sends perfectly fine. It's just annoying me how this checkbox appear. The only way to get rid of it is to quit Mail and relaunch it.
It hinders my workflow a little because sometimes, I do want to use the Attachment icon to attach my items in my emails.
    Please help me~

Okay. I've managed to fix this problem on my own.
What I did was to go under "Utilities" then "Disk Utility".
Next, I clicked on my startup hard disk on the left and clicked on "Verify Disk Permissions" to see if there are any abnormalities (and there was a huge list).
Then, I clicked on "Repair Disk Permissions" to fix those abnormalities and then, this issue went away!

hello, this sounds like a problem possibly caused by malware on your pc. please go to ''firefox > addons > extensions'' & remove any suspicious entries (toolbars, things that you have not installed intentionally, don't know what purpose they serve, etc). also go to the windows control panel / programs and remove all toolbars or potentially unwanted software from there and do a full scan of your system with the security software that you have in place and different other tools like the [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free free version of malwarebytes] & [http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ adwcleaner].

You are still under warranty.  Call Apple Care. Make sure you get a case number as all repairs have an additional 90 days of warranty.
#1 - You have 14 days from the date of purchase to return your computer with no questions asked.
#2 - You have 90 days of FREE phone tech support.
#3 - You have the standard one year Apple warranty.
#4 - If you've purchased an AppleCare Protection Plan, your warranty last for 3 years.   You can obtain AppleCare anytime up to the first year of the purchase of your computer.
Take FULL advantage of your warranty.  Posting on a message board should be done as a last resort and if you are out of warranty or Apple Care has expired.

  • What does Private mean at the bottom of my iPhone screen when viewing my windows in Safari?

Private appears at the bottom of my iPhone screen while viewing open windows in Safari. What does it mean?

I am super frustrated with Safari in ios 7.   I do not have the pages icon on the bottom right of Safari ios 7. When I press the plus sign at the top right I see 'private' on the bottom left side but there are no buttons on the bottom right at all. I am trying to get Safari to have the tab Rolodex look of the tabbed windows. So I can see the pages. Hope this is making sense.  Why am I not seeing the pages button on the bottom right of Safari?
    Thanks!

Bummer!  Hopefully this will change in the future.  At least I know now that I am not crazy for not seeing the pages icon!  Thanks so much :)
