Safari replacement

I encounter a difficulty in visiting some websites where display incorrect character set.  In Safari, there is no manual selection of different character sets.  Is there any other web browser to have such feature?  Thanks!

I will take a novice stab at answers since I am not bilingual nor a web page designer.
Probably how well a multi language web site works depends on the language the web site was designed to be read in and how well the tools used to develop the site support that language not to mention the designer's command of the languages to be supported. If you have your iPad language settings where they match the intended target language you should have better results than if you use another language even if the site is supposed to support both.
It is possible the setting to a new language does not automatically throw out the rules of previous languages.
Language settings try to support the rules of a language. It will include things like a dictionary so text entry can support things like spell checking. Encoding settings are simpler in that they just translates a binary pattern to a specific symbol. So a web page designer will use a character set that includes all the symbols they would like to display. If the visitor to the page somehow tells the browser to use another character set then there is a chance that other symbols will be displayed instead of the ones the author intended.
I suspect that generally the usage of character sets is handled automatically and generally should not be the concern of the end user.

  • Arial font in safari replaced with another!!

the other day i downloaded some new fonts. for some reason safari suddenly began replacing the arial font with one of the new fonts. i tried to locate the font (and i thought i did and i deleted it) but the problem is continuing. it won't even allow me to use a different font. help!
    Message was edited by: everyday09

Oddly enough, it is only in Safari.
    That's normal.
As you can see the Arial font comes up as another font,
It looks like a stencil font. You should be able to find it in font book from the sample pane and dump it.
even when I change to a different font, the fonts on the websites will not change to the specific font I have chosen.
The font for a website is most often determined by the code of the webpage and not by what you set Safari prefs.

  • Safari replaced all my bookmarks with those from another of my computer...  without asking.  How do I keep this from happening again and how do I restore the old bookmarks?

    Safari bookmarks issue

    1. Open the iCloud preference pane and uncheck the box marked Safari.
    2. You can only restore the whole bookmarks file to a previous state. It's not possible to restore individual bookmarks.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it, then copy it to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    ~/Library/Safari
    Quit Safari.
    Select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the Finder menu bar. Paste into the text box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
A folder window should open. Restore the file named "Bookmarks.plist" in that folder from a backup that predates the unwanted changes.

  • Transfer Safari HIstory

I have both a MacBook Pro and an iMac which I use regularly. I'd like to merge all of my history items from the laptop to the desktop so that I can see all of the items on the desktop. How can I do this?
    Thanks!

    Hi
yes you can, though it's not something Safari or OS X can do for you. But with the aid of some other software, it's easy enough (more so than the following step-by-step instructions make it seem) .
Get a copy of Prefsetter from http://www.nightproductions.net/
On each mac - look in Home/Library/Safari/ & locate the file History.plist.
You need to copy/email one of them to the other mac, or connect via a network so that both can be accessed.
Presumably, the history is important, so I suggest working on renamed duplicates until you're sure it's panned out. Let's assume you have historyimac.plist & historymbp.plist.
Open historyimac.plist in Prefsetter, you'll see a entry named WebHistoryDates - click the arrow to expand it, and then select every item within it - with a long list, it's easiest to use Edit-Select all, and then command click the WebHistoryDates and WebHistoryFileVersion to de-select those two ( a long scroll down to the latter ).
You need only the Item 1 - Item xxx highlighted. Now use Edit-Copy to copy them to the clipboard.
    Now open historymbp.plist in Prefsetter
Select WebHistoryDates and then use Edit-Paste to paste the clipboard contents into it. You should see the 'xxx items' change to reflect the extra ones - note that the paste may take several seconds or more for thousands of items.
Use File-Save As to save that file as mergedHistory.plist - the resulting file will be much larger than the sum of the two you opened… don't worry, Safari will take care of that for us.
With Safari quit, you now need to move History.plist out from the Safari folder, and place mergedHistory.plist in there - then rename it History.plist.
Open Safari, and you should have history reflecting both macs. If not, & things went South - quit Safari & replace the original History.plist to revert.
It works perfectly here, but be aware that Safari will remove duplicate sites in history, leaving just the most recently visited entries.

  • Safari - bookmarks - plist - corruption

At least once a day and sometimes more Safari replaces my bookmarks with an old version. I recognize it immediately because my bookmark bar will show a version i used a long time ago. Also all of my bookmarks are now messed up.
Luckily i have a good backup and now I create a backup of my plist every morning so when i see this happen I delete all my plist and replace that backup that i know is good.
Does anyone know why does this happens? I can't find a particular "event" that triggers it.
I've even gone so far as to write an automator script to delete the old version and replace with a backup version because it happens so often.
    Thanks,

Did you deselect the box next to Safari in System Preferences > iCloud
And turn off Safari in Settings > iCloud  (for iOS devices)
Might be corrupted Safari preferences ...
Open a Finder window. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
Click Go then move the com.apple.Safari.plist file to the trash.
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.

  • Restore Safari History Help!

I have tried to restore a previous Safari history from my Time Machine backup by replacing the history.plist file in my home folder ~Library/Safari/history.plist. I quit Safari, replace the file from my Time Machine backup and even log out and log back in. However, when I restart Safari (v.3.2.1) my old history isn't there! Any suggestions?

The file I was restoring did contain the earlier history file. It turns out that the problem was that my Safari preferences (under the "General" tab) were set to remove history items after one month. When trying to restore history older than a month, they were being automatically deleted by Safari! Problem solved with a bit of help from Apple Technical Support.
I would recommend that anyone who is trying to restore an old Safari browser history from a Time Machine backup add one additional step - set Safari 'remove history items' preference to 'manually' before quitting Safari. Then restoring the older history.plist file to the ~user/library/Safari folder and restarting Safari will restore the older history files. Worked for me.

  • Please help.... New MBP and its a disaster

I bought a MBP i5 4GB in December thinking that it would be a high performance machine, I would at least expect it to do the basics in a reasonable amount of time. Trying to play a youtube video today in Safari and it stalled more than 10 times even though the video is fully downloaded, DSL is 15MB line connected over 802.11N with a perfect signal. MBP is generally slow stalling between applications, hanging.
Ive had a mac mini for about 3 years now and never had any problems with it. Ive been using Windows for about 18 years and really like it but can get a bit boring when you know it inside out.
With Windows, if you fill the partition which Windows is located on to 80% or even 90% of its capacity it will not impact on performance. I have read that filling the Mac drive/partition can have a serious impact on performance, is this true?
Im so disappointed with the performance of my MBP, im ready to smash it to pieces. In an effort to gain the performance im looking for from it, im swapping out the stock hdd for a Crucial RealSSD C300. If this doesn't solve the problem, it goodbye MBP, hello "half the price, twice the performance" machine. Is anyone else having these problems from their MBP? Any suggestions as to how I can improve the performance?
The MBP feels very basic, with no biometric scanner, no eSata and it weighs a tonne. Im sure ive missed a number of features which are standard on the majority of Laptops these days. Another thing im missing a lot from Windows is the ability to call up a Run Prompt (Windows R) type in a command/program (intl.cpl, compmgmt.msc, mstsc, c:\program files\...., \\192.168.1....,cmd, control, etc). I have since come across (Mac Space) for spotlight but I dont think its as easy to have a guaranteed match every time, maybe I just need to get to know what to type to ensure the top hit is exactly what im looking for. I also recently discovered Mac Down/up to move through folders as suprisingly Enter does not open a folder, no it renames it... I think this is an example of Apple trying to do things differently to Microsoft just purely for the sake of being different but failed to consider convenience/efficiency. Its a question of one key or two to do the same task.
The one thing which annoys me the most, is that after numerous revisions of the Mac OS, there is still no cut and paste. Apple's reason being that there is a risk of losing files because if you cut a file then it might be gone if you forget to paste it... Maybe someone needs to break it down for Apple what we mean by Cut, its:
    1. Mark for move
    2. Copy the file/folder to the location where it has been pasted
    3. On completion of the copy, delete the original file/folder
You can drag an item to a new location, presumably because theres no risk of you forgetting to paste it and it becoming lost but you can't ctrl x and ctrl v (Command X and Command V (Just to be different)) in case you forget to paste. MS have had Cut and Paste since the very first GUI and theres no problem with it. I know theres a number of ways of hacking the OS to get this functionality but it should be standard or at least optional.
Im also really missing Windows E for Windows Explorer, why Apple did not just use Mac F for finder and Ctrl F for find within an application??? I suppose it was just another case of wanting to be different and screw convenience/efficiency. The closest thing ive found is (fn ctrl F3) but its not guaranteed to always launch Finder, I guess the only option is to hack the OS again like before to get the move functionality.
Another question someone may be able to answer...
In IE if I type Apple in the address bar then press *Ctrl Enter*, it completes the address to http://www.apple.com . If I try the same in Safari replacing ctrl with Command it does complete the address but in a new tab. Actually, ctrl enter seems to complete most addresses but it seems like theres a web search in the middle? Will it always just add http://www. .com to the contents of the address bar? or is it searching for a closest match?
I was running a Windows 7 VM through Parallels but I gave up on it because of the poor performance, the MBP is so bad its unusable... I have an old Dell Latitude D600 (Dinosaur) which performs better than the MBP.

This is how I feel when I use my Mac:
    http://cultofmac.cultofmaccom.netdna-cdn.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/1 0/Slow-Computer-Collage1.jpg
Well today the MBP just gets even better, it was sleeping and I opened it up to do some work when I was greeted with a notice You need to restart, please hold down the power button..... i.e. Anything you were working on has just been lost. There must be something wrong with this machine?

*• If a fully downloaded video playing in Safari is stalling, what would the DSL speed and 802.11g signal have to do with it, since it has been fully downloaded? Have you considered playing videos in a dedicated video player such as VLC (or even iTunes)?*
Video content on youtube is flash based, I dont think VLC or iTunes is capable of playing flash content, this is something I expect of any browser (with a flash plugin of course). The reason I mentioned the speed of the DSL and wireless signal was just in case some Johnny know it all came along and tried to say that maybe that was the issue. Flash video content fails to play smoothly if I wait for it to finish downloading or if I try to play it without waiting. I wouldn't be surprised if someone tries to make out that the problem is Adobe's flash plugin rather than Apple's Browser/OS/Hardware even though the plugins work without issue on a number of operating systems in different browsers. It was 802.11N btw, not 802.11g.
*• Where did you read that a filled Mac partition can have a serious impact on performance? Did that source give any further information, such as how full the partition need be to affect performance — 80%? 90%? 95%? 99.44%?*

    http://www.cultofmac.com/why-is-my-mac-running-so-slow-macrx/62124
It seems as though all of these articles are referring to the drive being in a state where there is not enough space for the swap file and temporary files generated by the OS which I would expect to cause a problem. It was more when I was looking into the use of a SSD in the Mac that I was coming across information to indicate that the Mac may slow down by adding more files to it, this could be plausible through indexing or something else. From your experience of Macs, do you think this is the case?
*• What sort of performance are you looking to improve? You’d mentioned video playback; in which other areas would you like to see performance improvements?*
Switching between applications, opening applications, selecting a different tab within a browser, etc..
An example of slowness, when opening this page (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=676966) in the fourth tab of Safari it took more than 3 minutes to open.
*• If you were unhappy with the lack of a biometric scanner or eSATA, why did you buy the MacBook Pro? The MacBook Pro technical specification page on the Apple website clearly shows the 15″ MacBook Pro as weighing 2.54 kg; if that “tonnage” is too heavy a burden, again, why did you buy it?*
I can read the technical specifications. I bought the machine purely for no nonsense performance which it is failing to deliver. My point is that these are standard issue on the majority of laptops these days and for the price point that the MBP is at, I think its poor that it does not have these features. More money for less tech. I could accept the absence of these items if the machine was fast at the basics but it is not.
*• Apple has had its own set of keyboard shortcuts for many years. Try searching for "mac os x" keyboard shortcuts at your favourite search site to discover equivalents to your preferred Windows shortcuts. One can even customise the shortcuts by opening System Preferences and selecting Keyboard, then Keyboard Shortcuts.*
There is no direct key combination to open Finder by default in OS X. The only way to do it without third party tools that I have come across is:
There actually is a way to do this without 3rd party software. See below
    I. Create a service
    1) Open "Automator" - (Search for it in spotlight if you don't know where it is)
    2) Double-Click on the "Service" button to create a new Service.
    3) From the "Library" menu on the left hand side, click "Utilities"
    4) From the list of Utilities, double-click "Run AppleScript"
    5) In the main area, there should be a window that says "Run AppleScript". Above it, choose "No Input" next to "Service receives selected"
    6) In the "Run AppleScript" window, replace (* Your script goes here *) with tell application "Finder" to activate
    7) Click File --> Save As... and save it as "Finder Activation"
II. Create a Keyboard shortcut for the service
    1) Open system preferences
    2) Click "Keyboard"
    3) Select "Services" from the left hand pane
    4) In the right hand pane, Scroll down to the bottom. Under "General", there should be "Finder Activation".
    5) Ensure "Finder Activation" is checked
    6) Assign a Keyboard shortcut by clicking near the right side of the "Finder Activation" selection. The trick is to assign a shortcut that is not used by any of your favorite applications, since application-level keyboard shortcuts will override this.
Seems like a lot of hassle just to get a keyboard shortcut to open the default file browser.
*• If someone who was accustomed to using OS X chose to buy a Windows computer, would it be equally valid for that person to note that Microsoft chose to do things differently in Windows purely for the sake of being different from Apple, and that Microsoft had failed to consider convenience/efficiency for a person who was accustomed to OS X?*
Efficiency is not a matter of opinion, its a matter of fact. If it takes more keys/actions (ultimately time) to perform the same task in OSX than it does in another operating system, that makes OSX less efficient.
Take for example my last point of opening Finder:
The most efficient way I have found so far is to press *fn control F3* then press Enter
An alternative is to press *Command Tab* until you get to Finder, then press *command N*
In Windows, its just simply *Windows E*
When I say Apple is doing things for the sake of being different, Microsoft puts its minimise, maximise/restore and close buttons on the top right of its windows, Apple puts their Close, Minimize and maximize buttons on the top left of their windows. Ctrl C, Ctrl X, Ctrl V..... Command C, Command X, Command V. To be honest you may be right, im only seeing things from one perspective, someone coming from Mac to Microsoft may feel the same way.
*• I can’t answer your Safari address completion question, as I don’t regularly use Safari — my first choice is Firefox on OS X, Windows, and beyond, and I turn off address completion in Firefox. Maybe I’m a Luddite at heart. ;)

  • Mouse pointer hand lost on links

There are a number of references to this problem (mouse pointer over a link momentarily turns to a hand before becoming the arrow again) all seem to be answered when the problem goes away. I have this problem and I know that if I close Safari and reopen it the problem clears.
    For a few days...
For me the problem hasn't been resolved as I'd like to know why its happening in the first place and fix it properly rather than a short term solution.

    Hi Redsmartie!
I get this occasionally and though it works yes it's a little weird to have the arrow showing instead of the hand. I don't get it very often so it's no big deal for me. If you get it often I'm not sure what can make it go away really? Possibly a re-install of Safari is your best bet? Or you could try some basic clean up (repair permissions, disk, reset Safari, replace plist) but can't say if that will help much?

  • Tabs and Windows

Maybe I'm just missing an option here.
I saved a group of tabs in a folder and I have the folder displayed on my bookmark bar. Well, If I have a few tabs open and I want to open all of the tabs in the folder, I click the name of the folder and the tabs appear in Safari. Well, this works, but instead of opening the bookmarks in the folder in new tabs, safari replaces my current tabs with the ones in the folder. Needless to say this is very annoying.
Another issue I have with Safari is it allows me to open the last closed window, but not the last closed tab. I sometimes get trigger happy with Command-W and close a tab I want. I realize I can just navigate back to the page or use the history, it just makes it easier to have a "reopen last closed tab" button.
    Thanks for any info.

If you only have a few tabs open from that folder of tabs, Safari will reload the ones already open, along with the rest that you didn't open previously. There's no way around that at this time.
If you want to open the last closed tab or window, just install Glims, which has such a feature.

  • Repetition in Bookmarks Bar and Menu Sidebar, shifting in MenuBar,

I am seeing deleted bookmarks return as well as it seems a neverending growth and repetetion of my bookmarks since 5.1.2 update and numerous repeats in the bookmarks bar and menu. See attached screenshot. Yes, I used MobileMe and have been using iCloud since so I suspect it is related.
    Thanks for any thoughts

Actually, it just keeps growing. Even more repetition today. I have emptied cache, reset Safari, replaced the bookmark.plist file with an older Time Machine backup and within minures it starts repopulating and starts all over again growing in duplications. This has to be iCloud related in my opinion. If not, where is it coming from.
It seems various threads with different descriptions of the same problem or a variant of bookmarks and menubar issue are being addressed in this Safari forum, and most just started seeing this it seems in the last several weeks but not before the 5.1.2 update.
Does anyone else think so? This appears to need Apple Support attention at an advanced level, as all the suggestions, while great to have and try, they are not working. I'll bet this issue is very widespread, just not observed or reported yet.

  • Why are my new, blank tabs titled "Untitled 2"?

This just started happening tonight.  Restarting Safari doesn't help.  It's not a major bother -- Safari still works fine.  I just find it really curious that it started happening.  I don't have any other Safari windows open.

    any Safari extensions enabled ?
    If so, test without.
Failing that, triple-click to select the line below & choose Services-Reveal from the Safari or ctrl-click menu.
    ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
Then with Safari Quit - move  that file out to the Desktop. Test Safari again after setting 'tabs open with'...
any better ? - If not, quit safari & replace the file, overwriting the newer one.
This file contains most all safari settings, including those for extensions... so restting all those may not seem worth it for this.

  • Autofill inserts information not in my address card

When I try to enter 3 digits of my Canadian postal code which is T3L, autofill shows the full postal code, but when I tab out of the postal code field, Safari replaces the postal code with 3-0. I have had this happen before. How can I stop this incorrect replacement by autofill without turning autofill off?
It is not a problem with the website, because it works correctly with Firefox. I also tried it with my office postal code which begins T2L and autofill replaces it with 2-1. If I use my parents' postal code it works?? It seems that this problem is something between my address card and autofill. I have checked the data in my card in Address book (it is OK and the character sequences that autofill puts in are not present anywhere on my address card) and deleted the information about this website from the autofill preferences list of websites in Safari.
    Any suggestions?

Just trying to ping this so I might get someone who knows something about it.

  • Files with chinese names can't download correctly

This should be an easy fix if Apple would spend a day addressing it. Safari has some nice upgrades in mountain lion so I temporarily switched to Safari from Chrome. Until this is fixed I will be back with Chrome.

Not sure what Link I could send you. There are a few threads on this. The issues is that the name gets changed from Chinese characters to ????????.doc(x) or ????????.xls(x). Safari replaces all characers with question marks before they get saved to the desktop.

  • FIXED! How I fixed Mail not remembering passwords, keychains, certificates

As noted in this lengthy thread, hundreds of users who upgraded to Leopard were experiencing their email accounts not remembering their passwords in Mail. Since the upgrade to Leo, I was seeing this, too. Every hour or so, I'd need to reenter all the passwords to all 8 emails that I had. I also was seeing odd keychain behavior with Safari. I'd need to re-enter passwords and certificates over and over again.
From reading the above thread, a couple posters had come up with a fix. I modified it slightly, and for the past 3 days, everything has worked perfectly. Note that I'm no geek, don't really get why it worked, and basically attacked this like a man with a shotgun shooting a mouse. So what I did may break your system or cause you to die from cancer. But here's the steps I did that eliminated the problem
    1. I quit Mail & Safari.
    2. I opened up Keychain Access (in Utilities) and deleted everything I possibly could. I initially tried to just delete Mail and Safari-related stuff, but that didn't work, so I deleted everything the system allowed me to delete.
    3. I ran Keychain First Aid (Menu: Keychain Access). I re-ran it about 4 times until it couldn't repair anything further (there was a dozen things it said it couldn't change, but there you go).
    4. I then hooked up a second Mac, via Firewire, that had recently had a clean install of Leopard on it. I dragged the Mail app file over into the applications folder had it replace the existing Mail app.
    5. I did the same with Safari, replacing the existing Safari app file.
(NOTE: I hear you can do essentially the same thing for steps 4 and 5, using your original Leopard install discs and a program called Pacifist, but that was more techie than I felt comfortable with. But I hear it does the same thing as copying over clean virgin copies of Mail and Safari, as I did in steps 4 and 5)
    6. I then repaired permissions (via the Disk Utility in Utilities). I think this step is a little like smudging with sage, or chanting, but in fact both the new Safari and the Mail app needed thousands of repairs, so perhaps this wasn't as voodoo as suspected.
    7. I then restarted the Mac. Upon opening up Mail, I did, of course, need to re-enter all of the passwords again. But that was it. That was 3 days ago, and I've been groovy ever since. I've restarted the apps, and restarted the Mac numerous times. So far, all passwords and keychains and certificates have remained solid.
So there you go. How I Fixed a Hair-Pulling Glitch in my Otherwise Nice Leopard System.

Did you copy both key3.db and signons.sqlite to the profile folder?
You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
It is possible that there is a problem with the files key3.db and signons.sqlite that store the encrypted names and passwords in Firefox.<br />
Rename the files key3.db and signons.sqlite in the Firefox profile folder.<br />
You can add .old to the file names (key3.db.old and signons.sqlite.old) or move them to another folder to make it possible to undo the action.<br />
You need to set a new Master Password after renaming or deleting key3.db and all currently saved passwords are lost.<br />
If that has worked then you can remove the renamed files that are no longer needed.<br />

    I want Adobe flash.  I didn't realize that iPad2 doesn't have it.

It's been all over discussion boards, news sites, and review sites since before iOS was called iOS. You purchased an expensive toy without doing your homework.
You can work around the lack of Flash support on iOS devices if you mainly want to see Flash-based web video. Look for Safari-replacement browser apps in the iTunes App Store - many advertise being able to play Flash video.
