Safari slow loading

It appears that it takes a longer time than usual for safari to load when trying to get on web sites. Is there any fix? Is the cache a problem?

I would also like to thank you for the help. I have a MacBook 2.16 with 1 gb ram osx 10.5.4.
I could use safari in real time for about 15 or so minutes then I would get a revolving pinwheel. The pinwheel would last anywhere from 5 seconds to sometimes a minute and a half before I would be able to have control of the computer again. It was getting so bad that I sometimes had 20 or 30 seconds between pinwheels - very very frustrating. Restarting Safari did not help, nor did restarting the computer.
Emptying Safari's cache and resetting Safari did not help.
I called apple support and they walked me through resetting the smc, had me empty the caches in all of the computer's "library" folders and then reset the p ram. All of that had little effect on my spinning pinwheel problem.
I also opened up the "Activity Monitor" utility and watched that during these 'spinning pinwheel' sessions a message would state that "Safari was not responding."
I must say that after I followed the instructions that Klaus1 has given us here that I have not had any problems at all. I am surfing the net and not having any slowdowns, pinwheels, or whatever. It is like having a new computer again.
I plan on calling Apple Care, as my "Case" is still open, and informing them of this fix.
I can't be sure, but I think my macbook is also running cooler - I can't tell for certain as I didn't actually take temperatures before, but I did notice that during the revolving pinwheel episodes the computer was very warm to the touch - so warm/hot that I couldn't stand to have it on my lap. Now I have been online for about an hour and no such heat.
Klaus1 thanks again for the help. It definitely cured my problem(s).

  • Safari slow loading pages

I am wondering if I should test out Firefox, I have heard that it runs fast, but not sure how it compares to Safari. I have noticed that lately Safari is running very slow loading pages. I went to Macrumors.com and it took a good 30 seconds to get the screen to fully load. I am not sure if the fact that I am also backing up using TM and connecting wirelessly to my HD using AEBS is causing some slow down? Any ideas?

Just in case you have not received an answer. I have both Safari and Firefox on a August 2006 white 24" iMac (2GB RAM) with a medium speed DSL connection via ethernet to modem/router. Both load very slowly, often on the order of 25-30 seconds. This is true for opening the home page and for opening a bookmarked page once home page is reached. Apple Rumors for example, always takes a minimum of 30 sec. Mail also loads slowly. If I use the wireless connection, it takes somewhat longer to load a page in both Safari and Firefox.
I also run Parallels with Windows XP SP2 and Firefox on this machine. When I open Firefox in Windows, it takes about 5 seconds, sometimes 7 to reach home page and after that the same speed to open a bookmarked page.
I have a PC with Windows XP SP2 in the basement connected to the router/modem vis USB. Firefox opens a page in 5 seconds or less.
I'd like to replace this PC (it has screen freeze problems) with a new iMac, but am reluctant to surf at Safari speeds.

  • Safari slow loading sites j

All of a sudden Safari is very slow loading web pages. The blue bar will start and then it will freeze and stay there. If I hit stop and refresh it zips right across and loads. I have emptied the cache, reset Safari and run Disk Utility. Any suggestions?

Hi again, researching further, I found a poster who wrote:
_+If that doesn't work try changing your dns settings. I had a similar issue and after a visit to opendns.com and changing my settings, things are better than before. Plus I changed the settings on my router and which solved the problem for all my computers._+
though I did the other two things, the .com.apple file thing and the macfixit (well I tried some of those) this is what worked, going to the above mentioned webpage and following the very simple steps. I have no idea what the heck I did actually, but it worked. I also do not know why all of a sudden everything changed and I had to do this trouble shooting. Made me feel like I was back in PC Land.

  • Safari - slow loading on web pages -

Strange: If I click on a web page, Safari begins to load the page (from the status indicator) but then doesn't finish. If I simply reload the page,...boom, the page comes up lightning fast.
(this happens, maybe 10% of the time)
Why is this? And what can I do about it?
    Thanks.

If Safari is getting very slow:
Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security:
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
If your computer is part of a network: please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/bestpractices/#yournetwork and follow the advice given.
You could also try these codes as well: 4.2.2.1 & 4.2.2.2
If you use a Router, make sure it has the latest firmware installed.
One reason for a slowness in page loading may be the 'DNS Pre-fetching' feature of Safari 5.x
    This is described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408?viewlocale=en_US
If Safari seems to hang for ages:
If you have a lot of tabs open and/or a lot of pages running Flash, Safari can sometimes 'hang', requiring a restart of Safari. This can often be inconvenient, and as it is rarely Safari itself that is hanging but merely one of its plug-ins, usually Flash, there is a way using Terminal to restart the plug-ins (without restarting Safari and losing your tabs) by quitting the WebPluginHost process:
Open the Terminal from the Utilities folder in /Applications and type
    killall -9 WebKitPluginHost
Note that this command kills all Safari plug-ins, not just Flash. All plug-ins should start back up when you reload the page.
Then go back to Safari and refresh any pages that were using the Flash plug-in. This also fixes the Beachball of Death. Try this whenever Safari gets slow or freezes. The latest versions of Flash 10.1 appear to have improved the situation somewhat, but haven't completed eliminated it.

  • Safari slow loading whilst on internet

Can anyone help outi have tried resetting safari, emptying the cache, deleting emails, deleting history it will run ok when first logged on anf after about 5 mins starts to load the pages slowly.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up a guest account” (without the quotes) in the search box.
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem(s)?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault in Mac OS X 10.7 or later, then you can’t enable the Guest account. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Be sure your Mac is shut down.
    Press the power button.
Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone, but not before the tone.
Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem(s)?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • Safari slow loading last bit of page, then timeout.

Okay, I ve seen variations on this problem, but never any resolution. Here are the symptoms.
Safari starts out rendering pages fast, then about after 30 sec, slows down such that 95% of a page is loaded, then it stalls and times out. When downloading a large file, it will start out fast, then slow, then timeout. IE and Firefox exhibit the same problem, so I am convinced it is a network/network settings issue.
    Here's what I have done.
    Tured IpV6 off
    Reset Safari
    Delete icons
    Created new network location
Analyzed DNS lookup with http_debug in terminal - no problem
Checked download speeds- it's very fast but sometines it will timeout
Directly connected via Motorola SURFboard modem
This computer/safari worked great with Yahoo DSL but these symptoms just started after I moved and switched to Comcast.
Is this a Comcast problem? Thanks for any insights
    1.6 Ghz G5 Powermac   Mac OS X (10.4.3)
    G5 Powermac   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

I've got the same problem. The PCs on the network work fine, but my Mac will:
-Time out at 95% of a page load
-Stall when trying to contact a server (It'll sit there with "Contacting..." in the status bar for 45 seconds to a minute and then sometimes load the page.)
-Time out when trying to connect to a server
Browsers, such as Safari and Firefox, are all effected but other programs, such as Unison and Transmit, seem to work fine.
I've got Cable and I know it's not the cable company because the PC in the other room works fine. I have nothing installed that would effect the network connection, just the default install of Safari.

  • Safari slow loading, iTunes and System Update time out

The other day I found that Safari started taking a very long time to load pages. Yet, Firefox loads pages normally. Then, I found out that my iTunes podcasts were not being updated. The error states that the network connection timed out. Trying a Software Update, i sometimes get that there is a network problem. During all of these problems, Mail and Firefox continue to work fine.

It appears that iTunes and Safari are working at my work place. At home and work, I use the same airport settings but have different vintages of airports. So, it is either a problem with my ISP at home (cox.net) or airport. However, another laptop computer didn't have these probelm. So, I am still confused as to the source of the problem.

  • Safari - Slow loading and the spinning wheel of death!

it seens that every page i surf to i get the spinning wheel of death . i have to wait and wait and wait, you get the picture. this happens on just about every page i go to, more on the pages that have forms to fill out.
I have read on another post that clearing the cache may help. NOT! and that trashing the favicons folder will help. Where is the favicons? also that restetting the application will solve all my problems. This is not internet exploader. this is suppossed to be apple. rock solid and all that crap.

    Hi Darryl S,
    * You will find the Favicons in:
    HD/User/Your_Name/Home/Library/Safari/Icon Folder
    * Quit Safari an trash the whole folder, when you relaunch Safari again, a NEW Icon Folder will be regenerated.
    * Now go back to the Icon Folder in Safari an only select the Folder once, no get info by pressing the Command-i key. Set the Icon Folder to ONLY READ this prevents that the Favicons will be stored.
    Also:
    1. Empty your cache & History settings via the Safari menu
    2. Shut down your computer . . . unplug the computer, modem, and router, if you have one. Also the power to support the modem. Let everything sit for 2-3 minutes. Plug everything back in, start up your modem & router, then restart your computer.
    * Good luck ...

  • Safari now slow loading pages from Apple!

This is an add on from a future post today with this problem. Safari slow loading pages, NOW even slow loading Apple pages here on the discussion board.

Repairing permissions is an important part of regular maintenance, and should always be carried out both before and after any software installation or update.
Go to Disk Utility (this is in your Utilities Folder in your Application folder) and click on the icon of your hard disk (not the one with all the numbers).
In First Aid, click on Repair Permissions.
This only takes a minute or two.
    Background information here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751
    and here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302672
If you were having any serious problems with your Mac you might as well complete the exercise by repairing your hard disk as well. You cannot do this from the same start-up disk. Reboot from your install disk (holding down the C key). Once it opens, select your language, and then go to Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Select your hard disk as before and click Repair.
Once that is complete reboot again from your usual start-up disk.

  • Safari slow and Not Loading Web Pages after changing Modems?

Hello...I recently changed from an AT&T DSL modem to a Knology Cable Modem to improve speed and overall network capablity.  However, ever since I have changed I have had problems with Safary lagging or not loading the websites.  It doesn't do it all the time, but periodically.  Sometimes it is worse than others.
Basic issue: When using Safari, it stalls when loading a website.  Sometimes it will load, other times it will say that Safari cannot load the website.  If you wait a while and retry loading it, it may then load it.
Has anyone else seen something similar to this or know what I can do to fix the problem?  It is rather frustrating.
    Thank you,
    Jim

If Safari is getting very slow:
(Presumably you regularly empty your Safari cache by deleting the following file:
    Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/cache.db
    and clear your History)
Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security, (including anti-phishing and redirects) (Full information about Open DNS is here: http://www.opendns.com/home/nobloat ) and further independent information can be read here:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57338784-263/free-dnscrypt-tool-enhances-ma c-web-security/?tag=mncol;txt
    and here:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1146064/troubleshootdns.html?t=234
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)

Safari is really slow loading internet pages and uploading images. I have the latest software update. I just purchased this mac book pro within the last 3 months..just frustrating that it's already this slow so soon....Any suggestions? I called tech support and nothing they walked me through helped. • Safari 4 slower loading with RSS feeds

Don't know what happened in Safari 4 (4.0.2), but now it is much slower loading initially because of the way RSS feeds in the bookmarks bar are now being handled. I can not use the browser until all the RSS feeds have been checked. Even when clicking on an RSS item within a particular page such as CNN, the time to open that feed is significantly slower.
There has always been occasional problems with the bookmark bar for RSS feeds showing there are unread feeds, yet nothing shows unread beside the individual feeds. The problem now happens almost every day. The only solution is to choose the view all RSS feeds and find the unread items.
I am also noticing that web page loading is also much slower than it was in 3.x. Get tired of that spinning loading at the right of the address entry bar. The beach ball is more interesting because it is in color.
I have 18 Mbps broadband, so that isn't the problem, as all the slowdowns happened as soon as I started using Safari 4.
    So much for snappier loading

I don't understand why you're using Safari for your RSS feeds; it's not an ideal solution compared to a dedicated RSS reader like Vienna, NetNewsWire, or Newsfire; I'd use one of those and turn off RSS feeds in Safari's preferences pane.
But Safari 4 is faster than Safari 3; it isn't for you because of a variety of factors, so let's change them and see if we can't speed things up. Here's what you can do:
Try changing your Network settings to use OpenDNS
Go to ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari and delete the contents of that folder, then use the Get Info panel to Lock the folder.
Go to ~/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari and delete the contents of that folder, then use the Get Info panel to Lock the folder.
Go to ~/Library/Safari and delete these files:
    Downloads.plist
    History.plist
    LastSession.plist
TopSites.plist (if you don't want to use Top Sites, Lock that file right after you restart.)
    WebpageIcons.db
Restart Safari and see if your problem is solved.

  • Safari is Extremely slow loading pages, like Hotmail, eBay, CNN,

For the past few days, Safari has been extremely slow loading most all pages, especially Hotmail, eBay, CNN, etc. Apple support hasn't been able to help. Hve done all the normal stuff, Reset Safari, restarted, etc.... eventually reloaded Leopard, with all updates, 10.5.2. Still slow uploading pages. Have checked network with speedtest.net, Download 5019 kb/s, Upload 363 kb/s. Was told by everyone I asked, these were good speeds, "normal." But it takes 20 seconds - 60 seconds sometime to upload a page. Have watched "activity monitor" under network, "data sent" goes out fast, data received seems to come back but then stalls. I'm not sure of what numbers I should be getting on the return. Any suggestions????

READ my post, March 17, for answers. I read other post, March 15-08, by Toshinmac and March 17-08 post by Rudolf, answered by Hawaiian Starman and Klaus1. My problem decribed there, with Time-Warner/Roadrunner DNS settings. Followed advice... Problem Solved! Thanks to ALL for their input!!!! A Beachbum!
