Samba server cannot be accessed through Finder's 'Network'

Hi,
First off, I'm not sure that this is the right forum for me to post this topic, but all the Samba related questions seemed to be coming from here. I don't own a computer with Windows, so I'm not interested in Windows compatibility per se, but I am interested in having my Mac Powerbook connect with a Linux Server (using Samba).
So I think Samba is working fine. I believe this to be the case because I can run:
smbclient -L morbo
from my Mac and get a list of shares (the linuxbox is called morbo).
I can also access a share using:
smbclient //morbo/nanoo
and I can see the files in the /home/nanoo directory of the linuxbox.
So far so good. However my reason for setting up Samba was to be able to find shares in the 'Network' section of my Finder. I use the commandline a lot on the linuxbox, but on the Mac I prefer not to open a terminal if I don't have to. Here is the where the problem occurs. Morbo will show up in the Network section (although this takes quite some time), however trying to connect to it inevitably crashes my finder. I have tried this several times and each time Finder crashed and had to be relaunched.
Any idea what could be wrong here? It would seem to be that Samba can't be to blame seeing as the shares can be accessed through smbclient - is it a configuration problem on the Mac?
Many thanks in advance,
nanoo

I'm having the same issues. Which Linux/Samba versions are you running? (Ubuntu 6.04/Samba 3.0.14a here), apparently a bad combo!
Here's the results of the "hang" from my server's Samba log:
[2006/03/21 01:02:24, 0] rpcparse/parse_prs.c:prs_memget(537)
prsmemget: reading data of size 2 would overrun buffer.
[2006/03/21 01:02:24, 0] rpcserver/srv_pipe.c:api_pipe_bindreq(919)
apipipe_bindreq: unable to unmarshall RPCHDRRB struct.
This seems like the most likely candidate:

Bugfix information from Samba:
https://bugzilla.samba.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2973
So, if you're not running Samba 3.0.20, give that a shot.

  • Connecting to Samba server "cannot be copied ...there is not enough space"

I have a user running OS X 10.4.11 who suddenly can no longer connect to our departmental Samba server. To be more specific, he connects just fine - but when he connects, it tells him "zero KB available" and if he tries to copy a file (a very small file) to the server, it gives him the error message:
+the item cannot be copied because there is not enough space+
I know for a fact that the problem is NOT a problem with the server nor userid because:
    * the server has 7.5 TB of space available
    * I can connect to the server from another Mac (running OS X 10.5) and can write/copy all the files my little heart desires.
    Suggestions?

    Couple of ideas...
In Finder, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes".
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.
    Trash this file & reboot...

  • Safe to expose samba fileserver publicly, or access through VPN?

I have a Mavericks server running filesharing and VPN services through OSX server 3.2.2. My users connect to the VPN from the internet, then access the fileserver from within the private network. Recently, some changes to the network broke the VPN for windows clients. But, if I open ports TCP 139 (SMB) and TCP 548 (AFP) windows users can still access the filerserver (bypassing the VPN).
Is it safe to bypass the VPN and expose the fileserver directly? I've been able to find some information on security issues in samba, but it all seems pretty dated.

This isn't even a discussion, locally.  VPN.  Any other way just invites the riffraff to poke at the open ports, and even if there's no exposed passwords and no weak passwords, you're still going to get piles of log chatter as they poke and prod, and you're still potentially open to the discovery of a vulnerability in the protocol.
L2TP/IPSec is reasonably secure, with either two-factor or some decently-gonzo settings.  Traffic is also encrypted.
AFP data traffic was not encrypted, when last I checked.  The contents of the served files can be exposed to anyone with a privileged network position.
Local preference and local recommendations:  No open ports.  None.  Not unless there's an absolute need for specific ports to be open, such as a public-facing web server.  Everything (else) is VPN, usually into the firewall (with an integrated VPN server) or into a dedicated VPN server.  If you need public-facing ports open, put the host in a DMZ, and don't let any unintended traffic off that host either back to the Internet, or into your internal network.

  • Screen Field Attributes When Cannot be Accessed Through SCREEN-NAME

    Hello,
I have a couple a fields that control what is loaded into a table on a screen (same screen).  When entering 'edit' mode on the table, I want to disable (protect) the contents of the fields that controlled the table load.  Since these fields are not apart of table-control, I cannot access attributes (INPUT) via SCREEN.
How can I prevent input into these field until after exiting 'edt' mode?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I have been away too long from this stuff.  I was caught in the TC loop and needed to check these outside of that loop.  It works now.

  • No internet access through MS Hosted Network

Hi, I have been using my Laptop as WiFi Hotspot, but then suddenly we cannot access the internet through phones for some reason. We can connect to the hotspot I have created (shows it is connected), but could never access the internet. I know how to create
a hotspot using cmd: netsh wlan start hostednetwork, like i usually do.. how come we cannot access the internet anymore, but my PC has an access? Please help..

    Hi MicroFarad001,
"Hi, I have been using my Laptop as WiFi Hotspot, but then suddenly we cannot access the internet through phones for some reason."
Do you mean the WiFi Hotspot worked before (If it didn`t work before ,please refer to the following link to configure it)? Can we surfer the Internet from the Windows 8.1 machine ?Have you tried to connect to the WiFi Hotspot from another phone device to verify
whether the issue is related to the specific phone device ?
Please check the "Allow other network users to connect through this computer's Internet connection" option and ensure it has been confiured for the virtual network adapter .
Here is a link for reference of creating the WiFi Hotspot in Windows 8.1 machine :
How To Turn Your Windows 8.1 Device Into A WiFi Access Point
    http://www.7tutorials.com/how-turn-your-windows-81-laptop-wifi-access-point
If the Windows 8.1 machine cannot surfer the Internet. Please take the following steps to have a troubleshoot :
1.Update the network adapter driver or reinstall the driver
2.Run the  built-in troubleshoot tool to have a diagnostic :
    Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Troubleshooting\All Categories\Network Adapter
We can also try the following steps to have a check .
1.Turn off the firewall and the antivirus software temporarily to have a check
2.Turn off the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" option for your wifi adapter .(WiFi adapter -> Properties -> Configure -> Power Management -> uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power")
3.Try to run “ipconfig /release” then “ipconfig /renew” (both no quotes), check if it can make any difference.
If it is possible ,we can create a new wifi hotspot to have a check .

  • My guests does not get internet access through my guest network

I have created a guest network on my time machine. The problem is that my guests don´t get internet access when they choose the network and type the password. I don´t understand why this is happening? My ordinary network is fully functional.

If you are using 7.6.3 firmware on the TC, the guest network does not actually work in bridge mode.. it looks like it does.. but nope, it doesn't.
Make sure the TC is the main router in the network.

  • New modem and now server cant be accessed

Changed modem today from BT to ntl - internet etc all working ok.
But since the change the server cannot be accessed.
Go > Connect to Server ..... never connects.
    At the server...
Try to connect to Server preferences.... get 'Server cannot be found on the network"
In System Preferences Network pane on left is...
    Ethernet - Connected. (Looks OK)
lPv4 - not connected. (The pane on the right shows expected server info - i hit connect and it prompts for password but just says server does not exist.)
This is the second time this has happened. In frustration last time I just reinstalled OSX Server (It is Leopard version)
There has to be an easier remedy.
    Anyone help?

Changing the modem shouldn't be a problem. Try resetting the modem - power it down and let it rest a moment, then power it back up again. Some need more power-off time than others for the reset to be effective. While it is powered down, disconnect the coaxial cable as well. Literally unscrew it and leave it disconnected for a moment or two.
Don't do anything with your Extreme just yet.

  • Map linux shared folders to Z drive in Windows Client. Unable to login through Samba Server

    Hi,
I am trying to map my linux machine to a network drive Z in Windows 7 . I added user guid in smbusers and created a password for this user through smbpasswd . Started Samba server on linuc, but when trying to create a network drive, it is asking for the login. I used credentials as GUID/<CREATEDPWD> . Not able to login with these credentials. Am I missing something. My Domain is ORADEV. I attached related files smb.conf, lmhosts, smbusers  files. Please let me know if i am not configuring samba server correctly.
Here is the sm.conf file Details :
    # This is the main Samba configuration file. You should read the
    # smb.conf(5) manual page in order to understand the options listed

    # many!) most of which are not shown in this example
    # Any line which starts with a ; (semi-colon) or a # (hash)
    # is a comment and is ignored. In this example we will use a #
    # for commentry and a ; for parts of the config file that you
    # may wish to enable

    Hi,
To clarify a couple of things:
1- "reverse-route" does not have anything to do with this issue, the problem relies on the Windows 7 machine.
2- Do you connect with an Admin account (Windows admin)?
3- Do you run the VPN client as an administrator?
4- Have you tried to disable any AV or software protection on the machine (just for testing).?
    Let me know.

  • Requirements for Cloud Server that can be access through RDC/RDP.....

    Dear Friends,
There is a requirements to have some software(Accounting software) need to be access by 3-4 people simultaneously on the same system.
For this i decided to have one cloud server and through Remote Desktop Connection they can access the same.
Please suggest me what will be the limitations and cost for this.
    Thanks in Advance
    Deepak

Thanks for your thorough reply. Is there a way to have one MASTER computer that could create the keywords and have the other computers access the master computer's catlogues - or something of that sort. We are small graphics dept. with three people so even that would suffice.
Lightroom is not a networked application, and cannot be set up so that multiple computers can access LR via a network.
The only real workaround with LR is to put the catalog and photos on an external HD and then physically connect the external HD to the computer of the person wanting to use it. So only one person can use the catalog at one time.
You can look up Digital Asset Management (DAM) software on Google if you really need to have multi-user access and networked.

  • [network access] User cannot access through network

    Hi!
I'm facing a strange problem now.
One of the users of my WD Personal Cloud cannot access through network share. When he tries to login the same fails and the login is prompted again. This happens in Windows but happens also in Linux.
When the same user tries to login in the mobile cloud app or in the browser (only in windows because after all this years the browser cloud funcionality still not works for Linux users, a shame...) it works as it should be.Also i tried to create a new users and happens the same, in the app or browser works great in network share simply refuse to login! I already rebooted, turn off, disconnected and did other things but nothing worked.
There are 9 users and 10 share in he cloud and the firmware version is v04.01.04-422. The diagnosis is OK!
Thanks for the help. Best Regards.

Hi again! There is no error. When i enter the share ask for the login credentials, i insert user and password and when i click ok simply ask the credentials again, and again, and again... It's the same compotment as if the credentials are wrong but they are not, i use them for online login in wd2go.com or mobile app and they work. And another thing is that if i create a new user happens the same, i can login in mobile app and wd2go.com but in the windows share (or samba share if in Linux) it fails without any error, simply ask for the credentials again and again and again... The old users works fine. The comportment is same with IP or name. Thanks for the help, Best Regards.

  • Finder connect to FTP server no write access

I've set up my own FTP server at home and have access through terminal by typing ftp "my address" and I can open a virtual machine and connect to my FTP server just fine with the access privileges I had set up but when i use finder to mount it as a volume I can't write to any directory. I get an error saying the volume is read only. Looking at the volume in finder it says I am connected to "my address" as ftp user (this is odd because this isn't the user name i logged in as)
I've tried all sorts of configuration options and as a last resort I connected through a VM so this is obviously a problem with OS X.
How can I get this working?

CyberDuck and Transmit doesn't let me mount my FTP server as a volume (in /Volumes/FTPserver)
That's what I'm looking to do.
I'm trying to link my iTunes to an off site location, my new mac book air doesn't have enough space to hold everything. I can do it with an external drive and it work with a network drive. Getting off my own LAN I can read and play but updating apps doesn't work so great (this was using pogo plug) My upload speed is too slow to use Amazon S3 and I was trying to reduce costs by getting my dead desktop at home to do this for me rather then paying Amazon $20 a month. All I need is Finder to work with FTP transfers or a decent program that wont glitch out on an upload.
