Same issue Network Discovery not working and Windows Update not working
I've read the threads.
This is a Vista Ultimate upgrade. My OOOOH My I have clocked 8 hours
Everything was working before. I tried all of the recommended services turning on restarting.
Also, ran into the problem of my memory being eaten. Suspected cause hibernate mode, which I had to disable. Scott Hasselman blog recommended the fix which is a cheap work around that limits machines functionality!!
I'm and IT Engineer specializing in MS product lines since Windows 1.0. MFC foundation classes etc.. What is the real problem ?
I don't have the NetBIOS over tcp/ip in my services?
I figure that the cost of my time and other individuals pays for the OS four times over. Give me a Microsoft developer subscription or something to make me happy. This is my development machine and I'm loosing time and money.
FYI, Just upgraded my second machine to Windows 8.1 OMG !!2 Hours to upgrade after the download. I loose my configuration settings. I required to have a Windows Live whatever account!!! This is not the way to compete and keep customers.
Windows XP has been by far the best deployment experience. I need a Knowledge base that gives solutions , not a troubleshooting scenario that does or does not work!!
Please , don't tell me to go and by a OEM Surface I cannot recommend this to my clients.

If it worked previously, a quick solution is to run System Restore and get back to the previous status when the issue didn’t occur.

When you turn on network discovery, do you get any error prompt?
Please check if you have any error message about network discovery in event viewer.

Please use Windows Live SkyDrive (http://www.skydrive.live.com/) to upload the Error logs to a public folder and share the URLs with us.
Also, please temporarily turn off your firewall and all the security programs for a test.
As far as I know, Network discovery requires that the DNS Client, DNS Client, Network Connections, Network Location Awareness, Remote Procedure Call (RPC), Function Discovery
Resource Publication, TCP/IP Netbios helper, SSDP Discovery, and UPnP Device Host services are started and set to automatic.
You should check again if you have started all these services.
Regarding the update issue, I suggest you try the following suggestions.
1. Temporarily disable firewall and antivirus program to test the issue.
2. Open the Windows Update troubleshooter

3. Reset Windows Update components

I lost my USB dock connector cable for my ipod. I just went out today and bought a brand new "Cygnett GrooveLink Strech Retractable USB Cable for iPod". I was pumped when I came home to finally be able to add music to my ipod again, but alas when I plug the iPod in, Windows pops up saying that the device is not functional and that Windows does not recognize it. I had the same problems all of you are having. I
just got a 5th generation video ipod. For a few
days, my computer a) wouldn't recognize it; b) froze
up when I connected it; c) mistook it for a mass
storage device ("drive E"). I bought a USB 2.0
notebook card which didn't work either and actually
seemed to make the problem worse because when I
connected the iPod to it my computer froze up.
I was very confused because my new iPod worked on my
brother's computer--which is much older than mine but
still recognized the iPod and connected to it.
Then I noticed that my brother's computer is running
an older version of the ipod software. I used his
disk to install "Ipod Updater 2005-06-26" rather than
the new version of the software on the Apple Web
site. Then I plugged my iPod into a USB 1.1 port.
To my surprise, my computer finally recognized the
iPod and is now loading music onto it. I cannot
believe this worked. I wonder if the latest version
of the software is faulty in some way.
Try it! I hope it will work for you too. You will
need an older version of the iPod updater software,
so borrow it from a friend with an older ipod.
I am having this problem also...It will work fine on the 1.1 but when i plug it into the 2.0 it has trouble recognizing it... -
My nano isnt working and the updater isnt working
i've had my nano for a few months, a little before apirl i think. and i havent been adding new songs for about a month. i recently got a new cd for my birthday and i wanted to import them into my ipod. the updater came up and said i needed an update. so i updated it. I DID NOT CLICK RESTORE. i made sure i didnt click restore because i've seen what happens to an ipod if you do. it erased ALL my songs on my ipod. then i disconnected it and reconnected my ipod and my computer and iTunes wont recognize my ipod anymore. i went to My Computer and right next to the F: Drive thing, it said removable disk instead of iPod. the computer still charges my ipod, but other than that, my computer doesnt recognize it.
i've tried the 5 r's, and it didnt work. i tried many solutions posted on the forums, but none of them have worked so far. i have also tried the HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool but it requires me to use the updater, which isnt working.

"Here is what I did folks after the 2006-06-28 updater did a number on two nanos.
I reformatted iPOD drive to FAT32 and then used the 2006-06-28 updater to restore. You lose all your data from the iPOD so have to reload.
Steps that I followed to fix:
1. Connect your iPOD and put into disk mode (hold down menu and select (center) until apple logo appears, then immediately hold down select(center)and play/pause until iPOD enters disk mode)
2. Find out what drive your iPOD is on by looking in My Computer (e.g. E:, G: or I:)
3. Go to start menu --> run
4. Enter cmd and select'OK'
5. Black dos box comes up
6. type "format I: /FS:FAT32 /Q (enter)"
(I: is the drive name - change to your drive if different)
7. type enter when it asks for the disk.
8. Leave disk label blank. (just hit enter when prompted)
9. After finish formatting use system tray to safely remove hardware from the drive.
10. Restart computer
11. Launch ipod updater
12. connect ipod
13. After recognizes iPOD - select restore
14. Let it complete restore successful - iPod may still show the do not disconnect
15. Disconnect ipod (again using system tray)
16. Restart computer
17. Launch iTunes
18. Connect iPOD should be recognized by iTUNES (FINALLY!!)
If not try uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes - then connect iPOD "

I have installed BootCamp 5.1 and Windows updates not working because it extract files on Mac partition before installation. Is there any workaround for same ?
To replicate this issue - Try to download .net framework 4.5 from microsoft website and than run that setup on windows partition.
Before installation. it will first extract all the binaries to a other drivers, since in my case other primary drive is E which is a Mac partition so it always give me an error while extractiing and therefore setup is not able to execute propely.
Let me try to get the screen shot of error and send it here. -

I had an iphone 4s and it worked nice with facetime and imessage using my phone number but it was stolen on December so I buy a new iphone 4s using the same cellphone number but now imessage and facetime does not work with my number, it only works with my apple ID. Do you think that apple has to reset in their database of the old serial number attached with my phone number and that’s why I can´t activate imessage and facetime with my number in the new iphone 4s??I understand all of this Meg; that is why I bought an Iphone; but never expected my phone not even give a at least a 24 or even 12 hours....I work 12 hour shifts and also would expect to have to charge each night but not twice a day or more. I am not always somewhere I can charge my phone.

I have windows 7 and my speakers worked then after update my speakers do not work and everything checked out and says they are working and that soundcard is working but no sound now.

I recently changed from a pc to a mac book. The major issue I am having right now is getting yahoo to work properly. The major thing is autocomplete does not work and I do not know how to load my contacts to "mail". Furthermore, I cannot attach any type of documents to my emails (Yahoo says there is a problem). I suspect there is a setting somewhere, but I don't know where. Javascript is enabled, so I am out of options

My 16 gig iPod Nano 7th gen was put of power. I connected it to the computer and it started to turn on (the apple appeared in the middle of the screen). Then left it two minutes and the computer went into sleep mode. My iPod nano had gone off and now it will not turn on, or connect to the computer, so i cannot charge it. I am not sure if it is a problem with the usb cable. When I conntct the cable to the computer nothing happens, but then when i connect the iPod to the cable it says 'one of the USB devices attached to your computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it'. Please don't say its broken already

Everytime I open itunes I get a message saying itunes has stopped working and windows is looking for a solution
I have the same issue. An iTunes help page (iTunes for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8: Fix unexpected quits or launch issues - Apple Support) suggested I hold down shift and control when clicking to open iTunes, which opens iTunes fine for me. That would mean the problem is in the third party plug-ins that work with iTunes. However, the help pages did not say what to do with the plug-ins once I knew that was the issue. The pages said to find the plug-ins and move them to the Desktop, which I did. That's where the help pages stopped, which is ridiculous. Does anyone know what to do from there?

We are having a problem with Windows update not wanting to work with the
filters up and running.
When I drop the filtering Windows Update from the workstations works just
fine. When I have the filters up we get an error code of Error number:
0x80072EFE from the windows update which is only identified as
ERROR_INTERNET_CONNECTION_ABORTED Some network problem or the server/proxy
reset the socket connection.
Any ideas on what filter exceptions I need to put in BM to allow this
traffic??

Installed Windows System Update Service on a Windows 2003 Server. It's free.
Then I added a rule to bypass the proxy for the WSUS server only.
So WSUS server downloads direct from MS and stores them locally
The Clients download from the WSUS Server saving on bandwidth on the
Internet Connection
It's another work around.

T510 Mouse and Keyboard stops working with Windows Update - unable to roll back, happened twice
My mouse has been working fine for a while but it stopped working followed by the keyboard, I put it down to a Windows update but because Windows 7 keeps bluescreening on a restore point I couldn't recover. I contacted Lenovo got the rebuild disc for my machine, completely rebuilt it, all working fine, then after 2 days same issue, mouse stopped, keyboard stopped, restore points make no difference. Does anyone know what windows update is causing this and if there is a fix aside from rebuilding, I can't keep doing this and I need to understand the cause really, not had it with a laptop before. Gone back to using my old laptop until I can get it sorted. Does anyone have any ideas?
I installed the latest drivers via windows update and got the touchpad back, rebooted, it went again. Netiher the trackpoint or touchpad work. I then thought rather than focus on drivers check the bios. I disabled the trackpoint in the bios, still neither works, however if I disable the touchpad in the bios and enable the trackpoint, the trackpoint does consistently work. I can't explain why the touchpad worked after a touchpad update but now fails, the ultranav driver is installed but if both are enabled in the bios it say it isn't installed, if the trackpoint is enabled it tells me I need to enable both so it clearly knows it's there. What's curious is that this doesn't happen on the complete clean IBM build. I can't not turn off windows updates, I'm a developer so Ioad the laptops up with a vast variety of software and I need many of the windows update fixes, either way I am surprised they are conflicting with the touchpad so dramatically. I can't see it being a virus I'm using two layers of protection and if I blow the machine away and installed the updates via an .iso image (so it's never connected to anything else), I can replicate the problem. It's feasible it's another piece of software causing the conflict. Any one have any idea what could be going on or seen it before?

In my first iPhone 5, the speaker didn't work and people could not hear me on Speaker phone when I used it. When I used the video recording it did not record sound at all only a hissing/static sound, no voice. I wished for a software fix. I did a hard reset, nothing. I did a full restore to factory settings not putting my backup on and the problem persisted.
