Same photo in 2  Aperture projects

I have a photo in project "a".  I want the same photo also in project "b".  I can make a copy of it in "a" but if I try and drag it to "b", both the original and the copy move.  Any solutions?

Apple has done a serious dis-service to users in the naming of the container "Project".  You will have to work to undo that dis-service.  As an advance guess, I'd say that you are likely better served to use Albums for what you currently use Projects.
Here is a quick naming of the parts that you may find useful.
Here is a longer post on Projects.

  • Unable to import all photos in an Aperture project

    Hi all,
i was trying to load my new iPad (3) with some photos from my Aperture library (via iTunes) but noticed when selecting/checking the projects to import that only a subset of that project was able to be imported. This is the case with several of the projects in my Aperture library. Any ideas on what may be the cause? I thought at first that it may be an issue with RAW files, but in most cases there are none in these projects.
    Dan

    Thanks for the suggestions.
I solved the problem by regenerating the Previews for the whole Project, but now find that I have to do this just about every time I add new photos to the Project which is becoming tiresome as this is not a quick process.
Does anyone have any ideas why this is suddenly happening?  I have been using Aperture for 6 months & it has never happened before.  There are only about 300 photo's in this particular project (I don't believe that is near the limit) - & no stacking at all, so that is not the problem...
    Thanks T

  • Why are my photos not as sharp when I import them into Facebook from the Aperture Projects file, compared to when I 'share' them with Facebook within the Aperture programme? There is a noticeable difference and has been spoiling my photos for some time.

Hi all, I take wildlife photos (mostly birds) as a hobby, and have become frustrated with the quality of my photos recently when shared online, particularly Facebook.
I started blaming my camera ( a Canon 7D) as I changed it a few months ago from a Canon 550D, and I soon noticed that the images were not as good. Then I realised it was when I started using Aperture.
I started by using the 'share' option within Aperture but I soon realised that then I have no control over the creation of an album, and the photos start appearing on facebook before I have finished uploading them and given them captions. Plus if I subsequently move them or export them to my back up drive then they disappear from Facebook!
So I started creating albums within Facebook and then importing the photos from the aperture projects file on my computer. Because they are imported I can then delete or move the aperture file and the photos stay on facebook. Otherwise my macbook was becoming completely full.
However to test my theory I have today uploaded the same photo edited in Aperture stored in the same projects folder using the two different methods described above, and there is a very distinct difference between the quality of the two images. The shared ones are very much sharper than the imported ones.
I am a computer novice and don't know how to check what the quality settings are, or how to adjust anything to improve the way the photos go into facebook. I do have a manual but I just cant understand it :-(
I have tried a free sample of Lightroom 5 and my photos  look amazing, there is such a difference, but I don't want to give up with Aperture unless the problem really can't be solved.
Sorry for such a long first post, I would be very very grateful for any help you can give me!
    Regards
    Susan

Generally I would not use Facebook for sharing any photos, it compresses the photos substantially, and when you have shadows and dark colours you get visible "bands" where there should be subtle gradients, ie at sunsets and sunrises.
It sounds like you are using two methods to upload to Facebook:
    1. Sharing from within Aperture, which basically syncs Facebook with your Aperture album, so any changes made at either end gets synced, hence the deletions from Albums, although the original file should still be in your library, just removed rom the album. It is like a playlist in iTunes.
    2. Exporting pics and uploading to Facebook from the browser.
I am not sure how method 1 gets compressed, but I know that uploading hi-res jpegs to Facebook using method 2 results in poor quality images.
I wouldn't even bother comparing option 1 or 2, and they will both be poor images once you view them on Facebook, as opposed to viewing uploaded images on proper image sharing / hosting sites.
Your problem is not with Aperture, it is using Facebook for showing your work.
If you export pics form Aperture at high res jpegs or TIFFs your images will be fine.
If you insist to use Facebook as your way to share your work, then your workflow should be this:
    1. Right click images you want to share.
    2. Select Export version.
    3. Export as 100% size and ensure the export settings are set at 100% quality.
    4. Upload this pic into Facebook.
This will get you the best image size and resolution on Facebook.
    See how you go.

  • Can I have two Aperture projects with same name?

Hi. I'm new to Aperture and an advanced iPhoto user. I started using Aperture sharing the same library with iPhoto (that new functionallity).
I've read lots of manuals and tutorials (Apple's and others) as well as this support topics. I understand iPhoto Events are now Aperture Projects and I've read a lot about how should it be organized and so on.
My problem is: I got, for example, 4 iPhoto Events with the name "Friends". The appear in Apperture as 4 Projects named "Friends". I decided to rename one of them and the I came back to "Friends" name. Aperture won't let me: it appends "(1)". It seems I cannot name to Projects the same way, although I have that.
    Before: Friends, Friends, Friends, Friends
After renaming one of them and trying to get back to original name: Friends, Friends, Friends, Friends (1)
I have that duplicated name because it is like a title, photos of my friends in different time (one Friends is from 2005, other from 2010, and so on, for example).
It seems pretty bad I have to come up with a new name for each new Project, considering I have hundreds of them today. Any tips? Thanks.

If there is nothing separating the images then put them all in the same project. If you have a project Friends you know all your friends images are in there and you can find the ones you want by date or keyword or even Face.
There is no requirement to have the images from different times at the bar to be in different projects. I personally wouldn't work that way but if having a project called Friends at Bar works for you then place all the images of your friends at the bar in that project.
Of course another way to look at this is to use albums to pull all the images of your Friends at Bars together. Don't have the name of the project organize your library, create albums and/or smart albums to collect the images into meaningful groupings.

  • Same photo in multiple projects?

Hi there. New Aperture user here so hope this isn't a stupid question. I was wondering if it's possible to have the same photo in multiple Projects? My understanding is that all photos are stored in my Aperture Library but the photos in the Projects are really just links to the photos in the Aperture Library. Is that correct?
I would like to have certain photos in multiple Projects, if possible. Thank you.
    -Keith

Thanks William. Here is a broader question/issue then.
Right now I have 20+ Projects in the AL. Then I have multiple .Mac Web Galleries based off of certain Projects.
Should I create one "Master" Project, and then create 20+ Albums under that Master Project? It seems like that is what I was going for when I created multiple Projects in the first place. Albums are just links to the photo in the Project, correct?
If I do that, will I have to re-do my .Mac Web Galleries (since they are linked to those Projects, right)?
Also, not quite sure I understand your last reply regarding copying the Album? Sorry.

  • New Apple TV: 1) read all photos from Aperture (projects) 2) assign music

    Hi,
i'd like to buy your new AppleTV but would like to know:
    1) Is it possible to real all the photos within Aperture Projects ?
With AppleTV 1 gen isn't possible, i need to create first album cause photo in projects aren't shown!
    2) i'd like to pre-assign for each slideshow a music (from iTunes): is it possible with 2nd gen Apple TV ?

Yes, I have the same issue also.
It look like only the last import is missing somehow.
For example, yesterday I import photos from DC and iPhone, and put them in one event.
Only the DC part shown up, and iPhone photo are missing.
If I use "Last 12 month" section in Apple TV and jump to bottom, you can see some empty squares, and not viewable. Somehow it is not updated.

  • I have imported my I photo library into Aperture.  all the old i photo events are now in the aperture library showing number of photos but when clicked none display.  I can see the photos if i run the cursor over the project.  Help please.

I imported my i photo library into aperture.
I can see the i photo events in aperture library as events with the number of photos in each event.
When you click events in the aperture library no photos appear although if you roll the cursor over the event icon it show the photos.  If you click on the event either on the event icon or in the library no photos appear.
    Help

Check, if you have any filters set. The search fields in the Insector panel and the browser should be showing "All items" or "Showing All".
The Browser search field could be set for each project and album individually, so you have to check it for each project.
    Regards
    Léonie
For example: The projects count shows "20 items", but the browser is empty, because the project's filter is set to show only rejected items.

  • TS5192 After updating with 4.09 my photos which I store on an external hard drive will load into Aperture for 15 or so photos and then I just get the same photo repeating despite clicking on a different one in the group.  I have to stop working and come b

After installing the 4.09 fix to process RAW from Sony RX100 (after updating to 3.5.1), photos do not continue to load into Aperture from the external hard drive where they are referenced.  The same photo is stuck in the adjustments frame to be worked on and the photos will not advance, no matter what I try, so i can work on the next one.  I can only work on a few at a time and then i have to go away and come back another day.  4.09 does fix the barrel distortion but it has completely gummed up the uploading of the referenced photos.  It's taking me days and weeks to process a couple of hundred photos.

The Macbook Air is a low end Macintosh for graphics apps and you are asking it to perform a heavy pro workflow using a pro application. The integrated GPU of MBAs is a serious limiter to heavy graphics. Personally I would expect flaky performance with certain operations. In general I recommend that Aperture users choose boxes with independent GPUs and capable of taking 16 GB RAM if necessary.
It will be important to carefully optimize workflow. How much RAM is in the MBA? The most Apple specs is 8 GB but you can check OWC to see if you can go to 16 GB. My Aperture/Photoshop workflow paged out at 8 GB RAM before I upgraded to 16 GB RAM.
You should evaluate whether or not you have adequate RAM:
Look at the Page Outs number under System Memory on the Activity Monitor app before starting a typical Aperture/Photoshop work session and write the number down. Recheck the Page Outs count after working for a few hours and write the number down again. If the page outs change (manual calculation of ending page outs number minus starting page outs number) is not zero your workflow is RAM-starved.
Ignore the pie charts and other info in Activity Monitor because they can be misleading regarding RAM usage. For RAM analysis, manually count page outs before and after a work session.

  • How to add uploaded photos (not from aperture) in Mobileme Gallery to a project

I shared some photos using a mobileme gallery where I allowed friends to upload their photos to the gallery.  Now the gallery exists with both the photos from my aperture library (and project) and my friends photos (which appear in aperture with a little symbol).
I would like to have the photos that were uploaded by my friends to be added to a new project without moving or erasing them in the mobileme gallery.  Is there a simple way to do this? I know if I select photos from a project and drag and drop them to another project aperture moves the photos but I don't know if this is how aperture handles mobileme galleries in the inspector.
    Jeff

Just drag an image from the MobileMe Gallery to a project it will copy the image, not move it. Aperture will move images that are stored locally in the library but since these images uploaded by friends are only stored on the MobileMe servers, Aperture will make a copy when you drag them to a project.

  • Putting Mobileme Gallery Photos into Aperture Project

    Hello,
I was recently on vacation with my brother and we each took pictures with our cameras. We used a laptop to load the photos to a new mobile me gallery. When I got home, I opened aperture and the mobileme gallery appeared under the mobileme gallery list. My question is how can I get those photos into a new aperture project, where the photos become the master photos locally on my mac? I tried selecting and dragging them to a new project but each photo has a globe on it and I am worried that if I delete the gallery, the photos will disappear.
    Jeff

    Hi,
I have one image in my Aperture Library that has a globe badge. I've been struggling to understand what it means as this badge is not explained in the manual and I can't find anything on the web.
Are you saying this happens when you pull photos from MobileMe? I've never done this, so it's a bit strange. I do often send galleries from Aperture to MobileMe, but have never done the reverse.

  • Aperture project photos not showing up in iWeb

Hi, I posted this in the iWeb board as well, but have gotten no response.
I use iWeb to create a website based around my photography and a blog I update periodically. I have been using this combination for at least two years now with no problems. By the way, the OS is SL 10.6.2, the Aperture version is 2.1.4, I use iLife '09 and all current patches and updates for each of the above is current according to Software Update.
The problem I am experiencing is with the Media Browser in iWeb. For one project only, when I click on the project in the Media Browser, no photos display in the lower half of the browser. The project in question is a new one, but other newer projects are not exhibiting this behavior. For all other projects, albums, smart albums, etc. photos appear when the project/album button is clicked. I have deleted the plist file for iWeb, restarted iWeb and Aperture, rebooted the machine (iMac Core Duo 24" late 2007), and tried every other combination I can think of.
Does anyone have any idea of why this behavior is occurring and what I can do to remedy it? Thanks in advance for any help you can give.
    Rick

Have you tried regenerating the previews for that Project? Go to the project, select all the images then choose Images >> Delete Previews followed by Images >> Update Previews.
Deleting the previews first isn't strictly necessary, but it's good to start with a clean slate.

  • Aperture Projects - Hidden Photos - Corrupt?

I have about 10 folders, perhaps 500 subfolders, and about 1300 projects in a 40 GB Aperture 3 Library.  One folder, and many, but not all, of the perhaps 300 subfolders 400 projects inside, will not show photos.  The photo count in the projects are accurate, I can make a smart album which shows the photos, and I can manually find the photos inside the hidden folders within the Aperture Library, but the photos will not appear if I highlight the project or the parent folder.
I have rebuilt the database, repaired permissions and gone to the Apple Genius Bar, only to get cheerful instructions to manually rebuild everything.  I'm hoping for a more clever solution, like trashing a plist, using my backup copies of the library, or something along those lines.  Any ideas would be much appreciated.
I'm also open to suggestions that I move to Lightroom, or another software, for to have this happen 6 months into using this software concerns me.

    Hooray!!!!!!!!
You just saved me the prospect of several days worth of work.  Hooray!  Thank you so much.
For some reason, the folders and projects with the hidden photos have some sort of filter.  But when I go to the search bar and click on the magnifying glass, and select, show all (^6), the images return.  I'm guessing I might need to manually do that for each folder, but at most that would take an hour, as opposed to the several days my other options would have taken.
Do you have any idea how I might have accidentally created a filter for selected photos?  The thing in common about those images is that most are pictures I collected from various websites on the internet.  But I'm not sure that has anything to do with it, as other parent folders and subfolders with photos from the internet were just fine.

  • Can I have two versions of the same original live in separate projects?

I am not an Aperature or photography expert.
I scanned in a ton of old family photos with multiple snaphots on a page and in a single file. Then I imported into Aperature, created new versions, one for each snapshot, then cropped each snapshot, so each snapshot is seperate in Aperature. (I could have learned Spanish with all the time that this took.)
Then, I tried to organize the ton of photos into projects and it won't let multiple versions of the same original photo be in separate projects. I found a way to change the filenames through Batch Change, but that didn't fix the problem.
I would like to organize the ton of files, but from what I can tell my only option would be to go back to the scanned files, make copies from Finder as needed, once for each snapshot, reimport into Aperature and recrop each individual snapshot.
Oh my, I have kids and a job and a husband and I like to sleep at night. Is there any easier way to organize the photos?
    Thank you for your time.
    Carol

    Carol,
William Lloyd said it all, but perhaps Kirby Krieger's User Tip will explain a bit more the different uses of albums and projects:
                       The Well-Trod Path: a Beginner's Guide to how Aperture's major parts inter-relate
Then I imported into Aperature, created new versions, one for each snapshot, then cropped each snapshot, so each snapshot is seperate in Aperature.
You want to find each snapshot separately in Aperture? Perhaps you could explain more, how you want to organize your photos. William pointed out albums to group versions of an image. You could also assign keywords to mark special occasions like birthdays, weddings, etc.  You could assign faces to find photos of persons by name. You can use the search field in the browser to search for photos by face, date, keyword, etc.  Aperture is really great for accessing images in many different ways. There must be a way to access the images in your Aperture library just like you want to.
Then, I tried to organize the ton of photos into projects and it won't let multiple versions of the same original photo be in separate projects.
That is, how Aperture works. All versions of an image need to be in the same project, because they are sharing the same imported original image file. Aperture tries to save your disk space, by by not creating image files for the edited versions. Versions are just a set of instructions how to produce the rendered image, when you want to edit it or to export it. Unless you are working with the version, it will live in limbo and it will not exist as an image file. So all versions are kept together in the same project with the original image file that is necessary to render them as an image.

  • Help!  Can't figure out how to store the same photo in different events

I know that this is just a user error problem, but I can't figure out how to store multiple versions of the same photo in different events. For example, I use Aperture as my main photo library, so I have a big folder set-up by year and then by events within those years to organize and maintain my library. I'm currently working on a project where I would like to pull out certain pictures for other uses. I tried creating new events and then moving the pictures to those events (like I would have in iPhoto) expecting for a new version of the picture to be deposited in the new event. That didn't work - it moved the picture out of my "main library" folder and as far as I can see it now only exists in the new event. Next, I tried creating "new versions" of the pictures I wanted to move and then just selecting those and moving them. In one folder I selected three photos, clicked "New Versions", then in the browser display I could see two of each picture (for a total of six), I selected ONE of each photo and moved those three to the new event. At which point all six disappear from the "main library" and end up in my new event. I don't understand why that happens. Currently the only way I've been able to do what I need to do is by using the flag field, but as far as I can tell there is only one of those - it's on or off that is really not serving my purpose. What do I need to do???

Like Jim said, you most likely want Albums for what you describe. Albums simply consist of "pointers" to a single compilation of image data. Albums can be created and deleted at will, because they are just pointers; an important concept.
Also learn to use Keywords - and unlearn "folder" organization, which is not the way digital asset management works. The power of Albums and Keywords is huge once we lose the film-think of folders organization.
