SAN Connectivity to UCS

Hi Guys,
I am working on getting my SAN hooked up with UCS.Below is my confirguation .
There are 2 MDS switches. Each is connected to both SPs. Each HBA will be zoned to a port on each SP.
Two MDS 9500 SAN swtiches and cables are cross connected to the FI so that we have redendency.
NPIV is enabled on  MDS switch. I am getting an error says intailizing and when I look at the speed Indeterminate SAN guy says they are 8.00Gbps.
Not sure what is wrong port are not comming up Green .Can anyone help me please.

Hi Srinivas,
What kind of fabric interconnect are you using?  Are the fc uplinks connected to the expansion module on the fi?
Can you ssh into the fabric interconnect and run connect nxos and then show int for that interface?  And do the same on the mds side.

  • Direct connect to UCS FI from EMC VNX 5300

    Hi,
I'm looking for any configuration recommendations or best practices for configuring a VNX 5300 unified for direct connect to UCS Fabric Interconnects.
The direct connect wil be 10GB on both the file and block side.
Are their any guides or recommendations anyone may have?
I've looked and cannot find much.

    Hi Manuel,
    Two things:
    1) Take a look at the following matrix for the supported version
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/switches/datacenter/mds9000/interoperability/matrix/Matrix8.html
    2) Currently the direct attch FC is supported under a restricted to topologies in which the zoning  database is provided from an upstream Cisco MDS 9000 switch or Nexus  5000 or 5500 switch. Hence you would still have to conenct an MDS or a N5K to the FIs for the zoning info.

  • SAN connection to global zone

    All,
I currently have the setup below to my solaris 10 zone:
SAN connect to global zone where the mount point locate within non-global zone. SAN connection is place within global zone vfstab file. I run into this problem, the non-global zone will not automatically start when the SAN is connected to global zone at boot.
Please let me know where should I start looking for the cause of this problem.
    Thanks for your time.

    Hi MT,
Currently the SAN is connected into the Non-Global zone and they're not automatically mounted when the server is start, otherwise we won't able to connect to our server via ssh. I have it set up as following:
    var/zone/non-globalzone/SAN
I tried to connect the SAN into the Global zone alone and let it automount when the global zone is started and still have problem with ssh connection. The ssh connect is turned in maintenance mode if I let the SAN automount from the vfstab. I don't know where to start looking for the problem.
    Thanks for your time.

  • Copying data to a SAN attached to UCS

    Hi Folks,
We have a 2 5108 chassis with 3 B200 blades each and 2 fabric interconnect 6248. This UCS connects to a hitachi storage array. The virtual machines configured use VMware.
I am not very familiar with the SAN aspect and I wanted an idea on how we can migrate 4TB of data to the Hitachi Storage array . The external storage device which consists of the 4TB of data has a USB connection but the UCS system does not.
Can you give some options as to how this is normally done or can be done? Other than the USB.
    Thanks

Is your Hitachi array connected directly to UCS, or via a SAN, and if yes, what kind of SAN (Brocade, Cisco) ?
One can connect a dongle (KVM local I/O cable) to any blade, and get 2 external USB connections:
The KVM local I/O cable ships with every UCS 5100 Series blade server chassis accessory kit. The KVM local I/O cable provides a connection into the server, providing a DB9 serial connector, a VGA connector for a monitor, and dual USB ports for a keyboard and mouse. With this cable, you can create a direct connection to the operating system and the BIOS running on the server.
I believe this could be misused to temporarly connect your storage for data transfer, although a very ugly solution.

  • Cisco Nexus 5548UP to Brocade SAN Connectivity

    Hi,
I have a Server-SAN-Storage setup as shown in the attachment/below. There are new Cisco UCS rack mount servers with VIC 1225 and Virtual servers on VMware Esxi hypevisor connected to a new Cisco Nexus 5548UP switch in IP+FCoE mode. The new 5548 switch then connects to an existing production SAN of Brocade 48000 Director SAN switch which connects to storage in production environment.
I need to know the best way to connect the 5548 switch to the Brocade SAN switch without disrupting the existing Production SAN environment i.e. Brocade SAN switch configurations & setup e.g. Fabric Principal switch. priority etc.
Would configuring the 5548 switch in NPV mode be best practice?

See Figure 6-2 Converged Multi-hop FCoE Network Design Using FCoE NPV
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/switches/datacenter/nexus5000/sw/operations/fcoe/513_n1_1/ops_fcoe/ops_fcoe_npv.html
You have to use NPV on N5k, there is no FC interop support on N5k, to connect to Brocade.

  • NetApp direct connect to UCS best practices

    Folks,
I have installed many FlexPods this year but all involved either Nexus 5Ks or 7Ks with vPC. This protects the NFS LUN connections from both network outages or UCSM FIM outages. What is not clear to me is the best practice on connecting a NetApp directly to the UCS via applaince ports. Appliance ports seem like a great idea but they seem to ass issues to designs, both in VMware and the network.
Does anyone have a configuration example on both the NetApp, UCS & Vmware side?
I thought I would ask the group their opinion.
    Cheers,
    David Jarzynka

    Hi David
Can you clarify your last posting a little bit.
I never installed direct attached NetApp Storage to the UCS as well.
One drawback i see is, if you have your NetApp System in active/standby mode connected to the FI, then for example all Servers connect through FI A to the NetApp System (NIC with VMKernel for all Server active on FI A). If the NetApp Link fails and switches over to standby link on Fabric B all the Traffic will go form Server to FI A to Uplink Switch to FI B and then to the NetApp System - because the Server is not aware that the NetApp System did a failover. So not all companies will have 10G Uplink Switches which will cause a bottleneck in that case.
What other things do you see? I agree completely with you - all say is a wonderful feature on the slides - but i don't think it's that smart in practise?
    Thanks for a short replay.
    Cheers

  • Configuring Nexus 5k for SAN switching between UCS 6100s and NetApp storage

We are trying to get our UCS environment setup to do SAN boot to LUNs on our NetApp storage. We have a pair of Nexus 5Ks with the Enterprise / SAN license on them and the 6-port FC module installed. What needs to be done to configure the Nexus 5000 to operate as the SAN switch between the storage target and the UCS environment?

I'm still not seeing the LUN on the NetApp device from my service profile. Here are the outputs from the two
commands you referenced here along with a few other commands if they help at all.
Port fc2/1 is the conneciton to the UCS 6100 with FCID 0x640004 being the vHBA in my Server profile.
Port fc2/5 is the NetApp target. I have the LUN masked to the vHBA port name 20:00:00:25:b5:01:00:ff
I have just the wwpn from the vHBA in my server profile and the wwpn of the NetApp target port zoned together. I'm not seeing any FC traffic at the NetApp though from looking at the statistics. Do I need to include something else in my zoning?
Again, any assistance would be appreciated. This is obviously our first venture into FC...

  • Suse Linux loses SAN connectivity

    Hi All,
anyone come across a problem before where a blade with Suse/Redhat linux installed loses connectivity when one of the HBA is disconnected? we have a situation where we have a blade with Suse linux 11 installed (SAN boot) & we configured 2 vHBA's (one on each Fabric) plus Powerpath is installed & configured correctly (as advised by SAN vendor).
we "disabled" one of the vHBA's & immediately we lost connectitity even though the 2nd vHBA was still "connected". as soon as we re-enabled the vHBA, it started working. we then tested by disabling the 2nd vHBA & left the 1st vHBA running & it still lost connectivity.
we will be looking at the powerpath logs, but i thought i would ask the forum to see if anyone can give some pointers,
    any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Kassim

    Robert,
have not tested without powerpath but i guess it will be the same.
reason for saying the above is that we found out the problem yesterday when SAN vendor was carrying out a FLARE code upgrade on the SAN & when SPA rebooted, our Suse server fell over. all other ESXi hosts continued working.
we checked the powerpath install & found that it was installed but was not registered. below was the output when querying the powerpath install:
    # rpm -qa EMCpower*
    EMCpower.LINUX-5.3.2.00.00-029
    # powermt check_registration
There are no license keys now registered.
    # powermt display dev=all
    PowerPath modules are not loaded.
Ensure that the modules are loaded and try again.
so i guess this "might" equate to powerpath not been installed as its un-usable.
we did get it registered & configured & asked SAN vendor to confirm the config & they were happy with it.

    I am trying to check VNXe 3200 Connectivity with SFP+ ( Cisco UCS 6249 - UCS 6248 Switches )
will the 10 GB iscsi fiber / Copper connect directly to the UCS 6248 and what is the type of Cables ?
will SFP and SFP+ connect to each other or that will cause some issues?

    has the answer
EMC does not support Passive Twinaxial cables in an iSCSI or FCOE environment.
EMC only supports Active Twinaxial cables in an iSCSI or FCOE environment.
We currently support EMC, Brocade and Cisco cables.
SFP-H10GB-ACU7M and SFP-H10GB-ACU10M are active twinax cables

  • OEL 5 SAN connection w/ ports

We have an HP EVA SAN which we have allocated a disk group, then the LUN, then the Virtual Disk and the ports as we should, this being done w/ the HP installer on site. We present it to OEL and it shows each of the four ports as 'sda<1-4>'
For testing I created directories 'tmp-sda<1-4>'
    then issue
    mount /dev/sda<1-4> /tmp-sda<1-4>
    for each one
all are mounted w/o an issue
    I create a file
    touch x
x is seen on all the mount points
the issue is when I alter the contents of x on say mount point 'tmp-sda1', save it, and open the x file from mount point 'tmp-sda3' the change is not there. We were told by the HP person that the driver we installed, that being for RHEL5, should make all the ports seen as one port and this should not happen.
Has anyone run into this? Or can someone shed some light on how SAN ports are presented and handled by OEL5, I can't find any docs on this
Some output of the above is below

Ah! the joy of playing with multiple paths to your storage :-)
The reason you are not seeing your updates, is because you are not writing directly to your disks with linux, but doing things against the buffercache of linux. And linux considers the multiple paths to the storage as independed disks, so it doesn't know that when you are updating something in the first path, it should be the same for the other path's.
You need to setup a meta-device which does multipathing, and leave the direct disks alone.
Here's a guide how to set it up (it says dell, but configuring the device mapper is the same): http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/power/ps3q06-20060189-Michael.pdf

  • Good technical reason why data storage is limited to SAN in UC-UCS?

    Hi all,
I would like to know why in all UC documents, when talking about virtualization, we are explicitly limited to SAN? What is wrong with NAS? I'm looking for good technical reason (i.e. can guess couple sales/presales reasons)....
    Thanks,
    Tenaro

Not sure this is a “good” reason but it is “a” reason and one I know was cited as a concern early on.
SAN allows the server to treat it like a remote disk (i.e. you can access files by blocks and offsets as you would on a hard drive) – the NAS is a file server and typically will have its own file management “head” that takes care of this (i.e. you access files by name to the NAS and it will fetch/write the file for you) – the means you can have a much wider variety of applications/servers using a NAS without knowing or caring – SAN is going to require more work.  But on the up side doing things like streaming data to/from the storage facility (i.e. recording/playing back a voice message) gives the application server using SAN much more control over how that is done.  Think about control over pre-fetching chunks of a wav file for playback and controlling streaming logic on a long write – the NAS hides all this from the application, you have no control.
A real-world example:  I use a NAS at home (2 TB RAID… yes, I need that much space.  Really).  I can stream 6 or 7 HD TV shows off the NAS to computers/TVs around the house no sweat.  However recording HD TO the NAS directly is a disaster – massive file fragmentation even after I fiddled endlessly with various settings and it can’t manage more than 2 at a time without dropping frames.  I ended up having to record all streams locally and then copy them over to the NAS as whole files to keep things sane and tidy. If I were using a SAN and had a media capture setup sophisticated enough to use it properly this wouldn’t be a problem.
Understood NAS and SAN are starting to blur as time moves ahead but this is certainly a viable issue to take into consideration.

  • Nexus 5548 - DCNM - SAN Connectivity

I'm having an issue seeing the switch and managing VSAN's and zoning from within DCNM Fabric Manager.  Device Manager and Fabric Manger discover the switches, however, Fabric Manager won't let me configure anything.   When I try to edit the local zone database of the active VSAN I get the error message, "SNMP: No Switches are available".  The switch in the picture pane has a red line across the switch too....   What am I missing here?  Is there configuration inside the 5548 to allow me to manage?
FC ports are setup and active as FC devices show up in Flogi just fine.  I'd rather not manage this via CLI!

I am having this issue two in one of my 3 DCNM environments all of a sudden.  Everything is the same DCNM version 6.2(3) and the switches are running system software on all switches are 6.2(1) .  The only thing that I have done was connect some Cisco Blade NPV switches.

  • UCS connection to McData SAN infrastructure

    Hi,
I'm trying to connect an UCS to a SAN based on McData SAN switches. I configured the WWN pools and the vHBAs. The SAN Admin told me, NPV is on the port activated and NPIV is supported.
On the swicthes, my WWPNs are visible and the SAN Admin configured the zoning and the presentation already. If I rescan the the SAN on my ESX, I can't see any path or presentated LUNs at all. LIP reset with no success.
in the past, I had access to the whole environment and there was no special configuration to get this working. At this time I was working with Brocade/HP SAN switches. Today I'm only responsible for the UCS an the vSphere environment and the other admins have no experience with UCS.
Any tips or hints will be very helpfull tu get this working. Do I have to make any special configurations? Does anyone have experience with UCS and McData SAN and can share the needed configurations with me?
