SAP Data Migration Framework

Dear All, I read from TechEd that SAP data migration framework involves using Business Objects data services. SAP has provided pre-built Jobs with iDOC as target.
All is fine but I came to know that we can use Data services as staging area and modify etc our data in Data services beforw loading into SAP ECC system.
I would like to kow more about using Data services as staging area. Does that mean that when we run jobs then data is stored in iDOC(XML file) on DS or it means we can run DS in demo mode where we don't load data but keep it within memory of DS. This is different from profiling and storing execution/DQ statistics. This is storing real time data in DS and then modify/analyze and then load in SAP ECC.
Can someone explain if we can run DS in demo mode without loading data?
Thanks,

Hi - you can get more information on using Data Services for data migraiton at http://service.sap.com/bp-datamigration.  Also, check out the blogs:

    Hi,
Just to weight out my options and compare the diffrent products as a research of sort.
For SAP tools they use LSMW I believe but I want to check the alternatives.

  • SAP Data Migration from R/3 4.6C to ECC 6.0

    Hey All
We are planning to upgrade SAP R/3 4.6C to ECC 6 in near future. I am aware that data migration is not an issue as upgrade takes care of it all. What we are concerned with is that if after a few days of upgrade when the system is functional and users have performed some quantum of transactions on it, in case if the system fails then and we have to revert back to R/3 4.6C how can we get back all the information that we processed on ECC back to R/3.
I would like to know if anyone who has performed an upgrade, had some kind of fail over strategy for such a situation. Is there some tool we can use for this purpose?
    Regards

    Simple answer: not possible.
    > I would like to know if anyone who has performed an upgrade, had some kind of fail over strategy for such a situation. Is there some tool we can use for this purpose?
No - there is no tool.
Table structures change, update programs changed - it's not possible to "roll back" that to a date and re-do it on 4.6c again.
Do minimize the risk I would copy the production system to a sandbox, do the upgrade and let the (key-) users test their functionality intensively.

  • RDS for SAP data migration through IDOC's

    Dear Experts
Just now we have installed BODS 4.1 and RDS also installed now. I am in the process of exploring the RDS. I found all the migration objects is available in the form of IDOC's. Now my questions are
How to work on custom IDOC's. Do i need to extensively code on R/3 side to upload the custom fields. Like user exit or BADI for custom fileds
If yes then i would say implementation time through RDS will remain more or less same time.
Through BODS or by RDS migration objects is there any way without coding on ABAP R/3 side, Can we achieve migrating custom fields
Please let me how to achieve above requirements by RDS
    Thanks
    Vijay Mukunthan

    Hi Vijay,
You are right, the standard content of the Rapid Data Migration RDS packages brings the content with the standard IDoc interface for SAP standard only. So custom objects are not pre-built with the package. However, we incorporated the foundation to include custom coding as easy as possible:
    1) IDoc
We are using the standard interface technology IDoc. IDocs do have an enhancement concept which is described in the online help. There are three main cases and all of them are supported, however two need additional coding:
Z-fields: Additional fields in existing tables lead to IDoc segment extensions
With the IDoc segment versioning concept this is easy to realize without any ABAP coding
Z-tables: Additional IDoc segments will be necessary and lead to a new IDoc version
With the IDoc versioning concept you can easily add Z-segments with leveraging provided user exits
    Custom business objects:
You can even create a complete own IDoc message type in Z-namespace for own stuff, leveraging the given ALE layer of the IDoc middleware
    2) Enhancement guide
With the RDS package we offer an enhancement guide which helps you to modify the jobs and data flows in the SAP Data Services content according to the changes in the target IDoc structure to reflect additional fields and tables. We built it as a step-by-step guide following for a sample IDoc type but will work similarly for any IDoc.

Good afternoon, I am seeking additional SAP resources with Data Nigration, MTO and ICWC experience. Please could someone advise a reliable source to find the available skills in the current contracting marketplace.

Then my apologies and welcome as a "newbie" to our community.  Much information is to be gleaned concerning Data Migration in the website area called: <a href="https://www.sdn.sap.comhttp://www.sdn.sap.comhttp://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/developerareas/xi">XI</a>
Also, note that community supports community and members ask questions and "reward" one another for good content.

  • Oracle Legacy System to SAP Data Migration

    Hi Experts,
    New to data migration:
Can you guide me in how oracle staging is useful for data migration:
    Here is my few doubts:
    1. What is Oracle Staging?
    2. How Oracle staging is useful for data migration?
    3. I see few ETL tools for data migration such as Informatica, Ascential Datastage etc. but our requirement is how can we use oracle staging for data migration?
    4. What are the benefits in using oracle staging for data migration?
Expecting your response of above queries.
    Thanks,

    Here is my few doubts:
    1. What is Oracle Staging? It is where ODI creates temporary tables. It does the transformation and if required cleans the data aswell.
    2. How Oracle staging is useful for data migration?ODI loads source data into temporary tables(staging) and applying all the required mappings, staging filters, joins and constraints. The staging area is a separate area in the RDBMS (a user/database) where Oracle Data Integrator creates its temporary objects and executes some of the rules (mapping, joins, final filters, aggregations etc.). When performing the operations this way, Oracle Data Integrator behaves like an E-LT as it first extracts and loads the temporary tables and then finishes the transformations in the target RDBMS.
    3. I see few ETL tools for data migration such as Informatica, Ascential Datastage etc. but our requirement is how can we use oracle staging for data migration?
    4. What are the benefits in using oracle staging for data migration? You can refer https://blogs.oracle.com/dataintegration/entry/designing_and_loading_your_own

  • SAP data collection framework - owner change

    Hi,
in the data collection framework there is an owner assigned to all data collectors. In general the owner is the SID system itself.
If another system (i.e. solman) is connected to the system, the owner of the data collector changes to that system.
The data collection does not work any longer and creates a lot of errors.
I can change back the owner, but it changes immediately to the connected system.
Why does the data collector not work with the "foreign" owner? And why does the owner change at all?
    Best regards
    Arne

    Dear Mr. Knoeller,
Your SAP_BASIS SP and release would be helpful, both for SolMan and the managed system.
Until then, could you please check the following notes and KBAs, in this order:
1927012 - SYB: DBACockpit shows warnings about data collectors not
being properly set up or having a different version
1972114 - SYB: Error in DCF ownership transfer - should solve your issue in my opinion
1712802 - SYB: Change ownership of Data Collection Framework /
    ATM
1623182 - SYB: Authorization issues in DBACockpit
In case this is a test system, if the mentioned notes do not offer you a propper resolution, I would also drop all the collectors (Framework Collecter would be the last one, of course) and reassign it to Solution Manager. This also depends on your NW release, SP and DBA Cockpit rellease.
Relevant notes regarding DBA Cockpit version known by me:
    1757928 - SYB: DBA Cockpit Release Notes 7.02 SP11, 7.30 SP6, 7.31
    SP2
    1758182 - SYB: DBA Cockpit Release Notes 7.02 SP12, 7.30 SP8, 7.31
    SP5
    1758496 - SYB: DBA Cockpit Release Notes 7.02 SP13, 7.30 SP9, 7.31

  • Data Services as a data migration tool

    Hello All,
Has anybody used Data Services as a data migrition tool from a SAP ECC system?  If so what is it like to use and are there any documents on this?
    Cheers,
    Nick.

    Hi Nick.
About documents, here are some of them, but one that I think it could be useful for your understanding is the "BI109 SAP Data Migration" session: http://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/scn/shop?rid=/media/uuid/c08b931e-2a83-2c10-2aba-cb3968c5bc4e.
It shows the data migration framework based on SAP BusinessObjects technologies for legacy to SAP and SAP to SAP migrations.

  • Data Migration of FI-CA Cleared Items

    Hi,
Currently I am working on a Data Migration project to migrate data from our FI-CA  module on ERP 4.7 to ECC 6.0.
THere has been a request from the business to migrate historical data (e.g. Cleared items).
Is there a SAP recommended approach or tools to load this data into the target environment?
Currently all documentation around SAP data migrations talks about stategies for open item data migration however I have seen nothing arouund migrating historical financial data.
Is this because it is not recommended or technically impossible?
    Regards
    Adam Gunn

That BAPI is used typically for straight out vanilla GL, AR, AP postings, however you still have to create the other side of the entry and then clear it.
I need to be able to migrate full history, which means from an FI-CA  viewpoint:
    1. Migrate FI-CA posting of liability against BP/contract account.
    2. Migrate associated payments.
    3. And then clearing documents.
Basically the requirement is to represent the historical data in the new system as if it was posted and matched off.
Is there a technical way to do this?
    OR,
Do you migrate the FI-CA liabilties, then the associated payments and then run clearing on the target system?
I suspect this is almost an impossible data migration requirement as development of the extraction and load process would be extremely complex and testing would take months to cover all posting scenarios in FI-CA. However, I would be interested if anyone has attempted to do this before.

  • HELP ME ON DATA MIGRATION PLEASE

    Hi
what is SAP data migration what kind of tools and techniques include in that and also please what are the roles and responsibilities include in that when we are working on project.(RELATED TO ABAP)

    Data Migration – Current Situation
Data migration or data conversion is a persistent issue facing most organizations who have implemented SAP. Whether it is during the final phases of a new SAP implementation, during SAP upgrades and updates, during corporate restructurings, or during mergers and acquisitions, data migration continues to remain a challenging problem for IT.
Most data migration projects are faced with a time and budget crunch. But, these projects usually require extensive support from programmers and other technical experts and therefore data migration projects tend to get expensive and time-consuming.
The tools for data transfer and data migration provided by SAP are very technical and have a steep learning curve associated with them and they require technical experts to build and implement the data migration scripts.
    Data Migration – Ideal Scenario
An ideal data migration scenario would let the data migration project be implemented by the end user departments themselves. A few super-users within these end-user departments that supply the data should have the ability to transfer and migrate data themselves without relying on technical experts. Such a scenario would significantly cut the time and effort required in a data migration project.
Reaching such an ideal scenario would require data migration tools that are easy to learn and require no programming. Furthermore, these tools should work across all the different SAP modules and the SAP products, including the different versions of SAP.
    Data Migration
Data Migration is the process of moving required (and most often very large) volumes of data from our clients’ existing systems to new systems. Existing systems can be anything from custom-built IT infrastructures to spreadsheets and standalone databases.
Data Migration encompasses all the necessary steps to cleanse, correct and move the data into the new system *. Technological changes, change in providers, software updates or data warehousing / data mining projects make such delicate and critical operations necessary.
<b>Data Migration can be done using BDC, LSMW, BAPI, Idoc's.</b>
What is the difference between batch input and call transaction in BDC?
    Session method.
    1) synchronous processing.
    2) can tranfer large amount of data.
    3) processing is slower.
    4) error log is created
    5) data is not updated until session is processed.
    Call transaction.
    1) asynchronous processing
    2) can transfer small amount of data
    3) processing is faster.
    4) errors need to be handled explicitly
    5) data is updated automatically
Differences between bdc session method and call transaction method.
The most important aspects of the batch session interface are: - Asynchronous processing - Transfers data for multiple transactions - Synchronous database update During processing, no transaction is started until the previous transaction has been written to the database. - A batch input processing log is generated for each session - Sessions cannot be generated in parallel
The most important aspects of the CALL TRANSACTION USING interface are: - Synchronous processing - Transfers data for a single transaction - Synchronous and asynchronous database updating both possible The program specifies which kind of updating is desired. - Separate LUW for the transaction The system performs a database commit immediately before and after the CALL TRANSACTION USING statement. - No batch input processing log is generated.

  • Data Migration from SAP r/3 to SAP R/3

    Hi all,
What is the best method to migrate data from one verison of SAP to another verison of SAP ECC say from SAP 3.1 to SAP ECC 6.0?
This is for all SAP modules including sd, mm, pp, fi, co master and transaction data.  I know there are number of technologies to load the data such as LSMW, IDOC, ALE, DI, etc but what is the best way to extract all data feeds to be loaded back into SAP.

    hi all,
could you please post some docs on migration from legacy system to SAP system., also the problems faced while migration and best practices in data migration
    regards
    sridharan

    Hi ,
I require few details from you.
    1. What ETL tool you are using, If Informatica, it already have PowerConnect to connect to SAP. So you can create source and Target Structure and also you can use RFC's to send data to R/3. Else, for other ETL tools, can you prepare RFC's or any other way to send data to R/3. let me know the tool.
    2. Does R/3 contains the master data tables? If yes, then try to use LSMW for Mass upload of data to tables.
If your client don't want to use either of these options please elaborate, what is the case.
