SATA II (3g/s) on my Mini?

Can my Mini (2007, 1.83 Core Duo) handle SATA II (3gb/s)* hard drives, or just SATA I? Seems like the vast majority of drives available these days are SATA II.
* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SerialATA#SATA_Revision_2.0_.28SATA_3Gb.2Fs.29

Sata should self negotiate the speeds between the SATA controller and the device. They will run at whatever the slowest speed the controller or device is. You can add a Sata II device and it will simply run at Sata I speeds if that is all the controller will support.
Not sure exactly what is in your Mac Mini - but a Sata II drive should work without any problems.

  • Can I install and use any 2.5" SATA hard disk on my Mac Mini (Late 2012)?

I have a Mac Mini (Late 2012) which is currently housing a 500GB SATA hard disk. Unfortunately read errors have been detected and it seems to be slowing down. I want to replace this with another 500GB SATA hard disk and I was wondering whether any notebook (2.5") hard disk would work or whether I have to look for one with specific specs (such as RPM, SATA version, etc).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Any 2 1/2 inch STA HD will work as long as the height is 9.5 mm or less. All most all meet this requirement except very larger capacity ones
I would opt for a SSD since those are a lot faster than a 2 1/2 HD and now they are very reasonably priced.
You can consider installing a second disk to using:

  • HELP! sata 3 ssd for hp mini 110-3118cl netbook, but i can't install windows xp on it.

Greetings, I recently bought an ocztech sata III ssd  for my hp mini 110-3118cl but I can't install windows xp on it. I have the xp sp3 install version with SATA drivers pre-packed. When the setup goes through the first re-start, it stops, shuts down and re-starts.  It also displayed an error at the beggining signaling something missing
SSd's are very expensive and i exclusively want XP, not 7.  Any help?

    Hi:
It is possible that the NM10 ACHI drivers are not part of that package though.
Please read this guide for slipstreaming drivers into a copy of your installation disk and see if that works.

  • Mini 1010NR Linux XP Reinstallation of XP stalls at first window

First the situation:  I have a netbook HP 1010NR with a solid state drive 8GB.  Originally this netbook came with XP because I have the license and key sticker on the back.   Presently, it has Lubuntu (Linux) installed.  I want to revert back to XP.  Ordered the recovery discs using the serial number of the netbook.
The operating system CD boots fine and starts the process of installing all the drivers necessary to start Windows to continue with the installation.  I'm sure we all know this by heart.   The problem is reached when all the drivers have been installed and the first installation screen tries to start up.  It just sits there.  No screen.  Just the initial blue screen with the message along the bottom in the white bar informing that Windows was starting up.
I've tried USB DVD/CD because I have one.  I made a USB bootable flash drive and it stalls at exactly the same spot.  I have an old XP Prof CD and it stalls at the same spot.  All work fine on a different computer.
I've called HP support with the phone number that came with the recovery discs.  I have to tell you now that I'm profoundly deaf.  After a significant amount of time (you can imagine), the conclusion was that I have a bad CD and a replacement will be sent to me at no cost.   As of this moment I have not yet seen it.  It is early.
I have who possibilities:  The BIOS may be out of date and the SSD partitioning may be causing the stall.  I can't upgrade the BIOS for XP installations because it requires XP running to download and install.  The Linux version allows you to burn a bootable CD and use that to upgrade the BIOS but I don't want Linux.  I want XP.   Assuming that it is a SSD issue, I have no drivers I can use to overcome this block.  As you may recall when installing XP, you are asked if special drivers are required for the hard drive.  If so, hit F6.
Information about the system:   SSD is a ATA SanDisk pSSD 8gb.  Processor Atom N270  1.6 Ghz, RAM 2 GB.  [Serial number removed for privacy]
    Any suggestions?

    Hi:
Now you have the Mini 1010NR, not the MIni- 210-1010NR, correct?
    The drivers would be different.
It sounds like you need the SATA AHCI drivers.
I have attached the ones you need for the 1010NR below.
Please read this guide below on how to slipstream the drivers (unless you have a floppy disk drive to load the driver at the F6 prompt).  You cannot use a USB flash drive for the F6 prompt. That prompt will only work with a FDD.
Read the section under Intel drivers and then read the guide on how to slipstream all of the drivers.
    http://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Operating-Systems-and/SATA-drivers-for-XP-solution-on-0x000000...
Now, if by chance you do have a USB FDD then you can extract the drivers below onto a FDD, hit the F6 key and when the installation stops and asks you to select the driver you need from the list showing on the FDD, then you use the Up/Down arrow keys to scroll to and find the Intel(R) ICH7M/MDH SATA AHCI Controller.
That is the specific SATA AHCI driver needed for your MIni 1010NR.

  • Mac Mini (Late 2014) not recognizing SSD OCZ Vertex 2

    Hello community,
After days of tests and readings, I turn to you to seek for advice.
    Here is my problem:
I am trying to upgrade a new Mac Mini (Late 2014 model) from it's original mechanical HDD to a Vertex 2 SSD I have been using for a few years with no problems to report, great product.
First 1 cloned my HDD onto the Vertex 2 SSD using SuperDuper, all went well.
I then switched disks and set the SSD in the SATA III slot inside the Mac Mini and reboot... the disk would boot, the recovery system and the disk utility would not see the disk (or it would see it just long enough to try to make a disk verification and then would disappear).
Here is what I have already tried:
    - Boot from Linux LiveCD, I can see the Vertex SSD, I can see all it's file and browse them
    - Reformat the disk, in HFS+ with GUID partition table
    - Clean PRAM
    - Perform a Hardware Check - all good
    - Boot from the original HDD connected through a SATA-to-USB adapter - all good, i can boot the system, but i don't see the SSD drive (or only for a moment then as soon as i try some action on it (like a disk verification) it stalls and then disappears)
    - Try to OCZ toolbox to make a security erase and start fresh. I had here a major issue, the OCZ toolbox would not start, it froze after a lot of complaints a "Scanning for hard disk partitions and creating /etc/fstab" and wouldn't move.
    - Dissassembled the Mac Mini, removed the SSD, put it in a Macbook Pro, use OCZ Toolbox on it, this time, it loaded perfectly, identified the disk, i did a firmware update to the latest (1.37) and performed a security erase. All went perfectly. For verificiation I rebooted in recovery mode from the Macbook with the SSD and formatted properly the disk using the Apple Disk Utility (GUIP partition table+ HFS+ partition) and the system neatly identified it as a good host for system install. Then i removed the Vertex 2 SSD from the Macbook pro, put it back in the Mac Mini (reassembled it - god, that's a big pain !) and boot it again in recovery, only to see... nothing, the disk is still not recognized by the system.
Voilà... now I'm out of idea, It could be some low level hardware incompatibility, or anything else, i read about TRIM and Yosemite sometime not behaving well, about SATA II and SATA III compatibility problems, but so far, nothing clear.
I therefore welcome in anticipation your knowledge and hope we can figure this out. For the sake of extending the reach, I will also post this on Anandtech and Apple support forums.

Well, thank you tbirdvet, but the problem was actually an incompatibility at the controller level.
To quote the OCZ support :
The issue is incompatibility between the older SandForce 1222 controller used in the Vertex 2 and the newer Intel Haswell platform used in the Late 2014 Mac Mini.  The incompatibility started with the Intel 8 and now 9 series chipsets and spans across all products that used the controller regardless of manufacturer.  It is expected behavior to be able to connect the Vertex 2 then clone to it, but if you try and cold boot to it the detection will fail.  Unfortunately, the Vertex 2 and the controller it utilized are long EOL and never received a firmware update (if that was even possible) to adjust for the release of these new chipsets.
So I can stop looking around it simply wont boot, ever. Product being End Of Support, no new firmware will ever fix this.
So I guess, i'll have to look another SSD.

  • Do I need to install drivers for a sata drive?

I have K7N2 Delta2-LSR and it came with a sata raid driver floppy disk.  Mine is just a single drive on which I want to install Windows. I read some where that it is not needed during windows installation unless I want to setup a raid system. Is this correct? My sata drive shows up under the external device icon, the small green arrow icon on the system tray. Is it suppose to be like that or is it because I did not install the sata drivers during windows installation? Any advice please?

What brand and model of SATA drive are you using? I had two other posts on this issue because one model of Maxtor drive that I tried works fine and another model does not work at all.
My configuration is like yours, I currently only have one SATA hard drive connected to this machine. There are multiple PATA drives on the machine and they all work fine together.
Seeing your post made me do more research on my motherboard. Until now, I thought the SATA controller on this board was not capable of RAID. I know know it is, thank you silverferro and Stu

  • Poor WiFi performance on new Mac Mini ?

My new mac mini purchased a few days ago (late 2009) was exhibiting abysmal WiFi performance on 802.11n 5Ghz. I was barely getting 1Mbyte/sec through it, despite good signal strength (-50db), and my iMac which is feet away on -58db is giving almost 18Mbyte/sec...
Anyway - after much gnashing of teeth, and even placing the mini next to my extreme basestation I gave up, then tried, out of desperation, resetting the PRAM... Fixed!
Why on earth a brand new machine should need this doing, I'm not sure, but the old Alt-Cmd-P-R at boot up, waiting for the second BONG, and then letting it continue, fixed everything, and it now zooms along as fast as my other Macs.
Just for info - hope it helps someone!

These are pings from my iMac to .02 (mbpro) and .11 macmini
the mbpro is sat right next to the mac mini... rebooting the mini sorts this out... Come on, somebody must have this problem as well?

  • Need very large and quiet external drive for my mac mini

Hi, I already own a LaCie Bigger Disk Extreme 1TB triple interface drive.
the problem though is that it is extremely loud.
can anyone recommend an external hard drive as large or at least a 500 GB drive that's reliable and more importantly quiet.
    thanks in advance

can anyone recommend an external hard drive as large
or at least a 500 GB drive that's reliable and more
    importantly quiet.
Not quite what you asked for but this really is better...
Buy a PC box. Find one that is dead quiet and has a large number of disk drive bays. I have an Antec "Sonata" with a
2.4Ghz Pentium on an Asus M/B inside. The sonata is a
full sized tower and makes about is much noise at a Mac
Mini. Load the box up with up to 6 disk drives.
Next install Linux and use NFS to export the file system
to the Mac(s) (OK if you don't like Linux use Apple's
"darwin" as the two are nearly the same thing) What you've
got now is a "file server" which has much more functionalliy than a firewire disk drive. For example it can serve
the same files to 100 Macs and it can have it's own RAM cache and do RAID. You want "quiet" put the file server on the end of a 100 foot long Ethernet cable and put in in a closet. Darwin/Linux/BSD is happy to be "headless"
(that means run with no monitor/keyboard/mouse.)
Once you start takling "terabyters" you really should start
thinking about file servers and RAID and backup
It can be fast too. The server can make use of as much
RAM as you want to use as a cache, the RAID caclulations
and RAID multiple writes are done on the server
Apple has it's own storage system but it's middle four
digit price tag you can build the same thing with the
Antec Sonota box and common parts
My setup works well. The Seagate SATA dives are faster
than the Mini's internal drive but the Mini only has
100BaseT Eithernet. So that becomes the bottleneck.
I have yet to try to setup a firewire network between
the server and the Mini. It could be done but I'm not
    motivated. 100BaseT works well enough

  • Upgrading ram on Mac mini server - different?

I plan to buy a mini server 2011 and upgrade it myself to 8GB.
Is there any reason why some sellers on eBay sates DDR3 specs for a mac mini 2011 specifically for a i5 or i7 ??.... Aren't the specs provided for ram upgrade for my base model the same for the mac server ?  I'm asking since I want to order it even before I get the mini server...
    Thanks

  • I have an Emergency

I am a small time webdesigner in a small town and have been attacked many times and have suffered over $10,000 in damages due to the hacker who appears to have "Superior talent"  Last night after waiting for my Mac computer to stop running for more than 45 min, I discovered that both of my Seagate HDs were completely shot and also my Hitachi as well.  (Since only one was actually plugged in at the time puzzles me as to why all 3 don't work)
I have everything on the Seagates including my ancestory files, client files and all that is important....  Here's what I have done:
I opened the "Lacie enclosures and removed the Seagate drives.
I placed them in my Sata Caddy to see if they would work, but they did not.
As a result of placing them in my Sata Caddy which was powered on...... the HD's actually caused the Caddy to virtually turn off!
I then carefully removed the board from the HD's and placed only the board into the Sata caddy and again the caddy turn off indicating to me that my HD motherboard was fried.
    Question:
Can I get another board for my HD's and if so how do I go about it?
Second:  Would someone who knows about these kinds of things direct me with the right thing to do?  I would like to save the files and folders etc.  I believe, due to the nature of this attack that it is probably the MB that is fried rather than the HD itself.
I will offer $100 paid to a "Paypal Account" to the person who gets me in the "right direction"     These attacks on my home and business are racial and very expensive.  So far I have lost..... 12 HD's ..... 2 iMacs (one was 27')  1 brand new Airport Extreme AC..... 1 Linksys E4500.... 1 Apple TV and Television.
All of the above were either completely damaged beyond repair or electronically overwritten with some kind of script.  As far as the HD's are concerned........... 3 of them went in the same moment which indicates some sort of "script attack" to me.   My name is David Johnson, I am a Black Man from BC, Canada and this has been going on for over 7 years.
I was told by the Apple Store that the damage to my computer was in "no way related to any kind of HD failure"  but rather "Man Made" and it is the worst damage they have ever come accross in their history.  In that case I was able to get the HD replaced free because it fell under the HD recall from Apple 2 years ago.  I tried to contact Seagate directly but there is no number or mail which seems to go to their HQ.
I just can' afford more these days and I am out over $10,000 so far.      Someone's help would really be appreciated.
These HD's came with the Lacie USB Storage around 3 years ago....... I need these drives!
    David
Ps:  I have installed Yosemite 2 days ago ......... but not sure if that is significant!

I will take that into consideration........ but we know that it is not the problem as we have 5 computers including a 27' CD.... Here is my response to Sedu:
I thank you for your answer but it is not answering my immediate question.  We have 5 computers in this house, I personally did the electrical along with the electrician and there is no problem with it.  None of my other computers are affected whatsoever, just my work station.  Here is an example of what is going on........ I sat last night for over 40 mins waiting for my mac to switch users while the HD which is now not working was plugged in the mac.   I was working all day with the usb drive and it wasn't until the 40 min wait that all went bad.   The comments from the other person referring to the Apple response as "bogus"  doesn't know what he is talking about.  This hacker, has used Telnet to get into my machine, deleted files from my account at the server level, opened folders and deleted files........ and I have actually watched the mouse move around the screen as it opened numerous folders.
After contacting the cable this never happened again as they placed a monitor on the acc. So whether you believe it can happen or not,I would like to find a way to get my drives operational again.  Do you have an answer for that, it would be helpful if you do.........
    Thank you.

  • How do I transfer data from an sd card to another card ? Never tried .

My son has the same make of sat nav in his car as mine, a Garmin. On mine I have an sd card that has the 2009 maps on it for the UK, my son's has the much older version.
Can I transfer the data from the card in my sat nav onto the card in his sat nav to up-date his maps ?
    If so ..how. ??
    I have a macbook laptop, OS 10.4.11. I have a card read/writer gadget usb2.0 mac compatible.
I have no idea what to do though so some step by step instruction would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks

Put your card in the reader and put that into the Mac.
Drag whatever you want from the card onto the desktop.
Now put another card into the reader and drag that which is on the desktop onto the second card.

  • Random rebooting. Mac Pro. Bootcamp.  Why?

    Hi
I have an early 2008 Mac Pro running bootcamp and last night it started randomly rebooting. Sometimes it occurs a couple minutes after it has booted. Sometimes it takes longer.
As I am pretty Mac-illiterate I would greatly value any help in this matter because I do not know what to do.
    Here is some background info:
Early 2008 Mac Pro. Dual quad core intel Xeon processors, 2.8 Ghz (8 cores total). 20GB RAM. Video card is Nvidia 2GB Quadro 4000.
It got a new main board installed under warranty in about 2009.
Less than a year ago it got new Hard Drives (4X SATA), OS, Graphics card, Matrox MX02 mini max card with external rack.  It boots to Mac OS 10.7 Lion but I almost always boot it and use Windows 7 Pro 64 bit using bootcamp because most of my work is done with windows software.
Since the new drives, graphics card, Matrox Mini Max, Mac OS, Windows 7 SP1, and fresh install of all software and plugins it has worked excellent (until last night and today).
The newest system drive is divided between Windows 6 and Lion. 2 of the other drives are for windows media and the 4th is for Mac media.
The version of bootcamp is whatever came with Lion 10.7.
The computer was only connected to the internet when I did the os download, install and all the software activations. It has not been connected since then.
What seems to happen is approx 2 minutes after booting to windows it will just reboot and I hear the chime and it goes to a windows black error screen asking to start normally, etc..  It usually will then reboot another 1-3 times before it finally loads windows and then appears to work normally.
At that point it may work for several minutes or longer until it reboots again.
The rebooting occurs just sitting on the desktop and not running any particular program.
This morning after several reboots I held down "option" and instead booted to Mac OS to see if it would reboot. It sat on the desktop screen for several minutes with no problem. However then I had to shut it down and leave so I certainly cannot conclude whether or not the reboot problem occurs in both Windows and Mac OS or not....yet.
I don't know if it's a power supply (hardware), Operating system problem or what.  I'm lost and I really need this computer to work.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.

I booted to Lion and let it sit on the desktop. Went to eat and came back in the room about 10 minutes or so later and the screen was black but the tower white light was on.
I pressed the "up arrow" key and it came alive, fans and all. The screen light to the mac desktop very briefly and then it rebooted and rebooted again before finally starting windows.
Btw, I have preferences set to start windows unless I hold down option on the Mac keyboard and select the Mac OS for boot.
So Mac OS is not spared from the problem. What is going on.
Now I've been working over half an hour in windows and it's working fine....for now. ?!

  • When i am logging/ Capturing my mac is telling me that i am getting dropped frames. would i need to get a LaCie Hard Drive?

When i am logging/ Capturing my mac is telling me that i am getting dropped frames. would i need to get a LaCie Hard Drive?

To be honest, I've had 2 Lacie drives crash out of 2 bought.  That's not a good track record for me.
Your best bet  (I'm a computer professional, for what it's worth):
Get a hard drive case or enclosure that supports firewire 800 and put your own PC hard drive (SATA for example) 7200rpm or higher hard drive into it.
Let me explain a bit more.  External hard drive manufacturers often put no-name hard drives into fancy cases to cut costs and that's how they make a profit.  I've have had nothing but problems with with these types of drives. (Like Lacie) You are much better off getting some type of decent drive enclosure and getting your own GOOD hard drive.  I would highly recommend Seagate, I have NEVER had a problem with a Seagate drive in 20 years of owning PCs and Macs.  Western Digital is also a good brand (though I had 1 crash). These are the types of drives you would put in your Mac Pro.  You want to get an SATA hard drive.
I have owned several external cases where the case electronics fried, but the hard drives were still in good shape. Take the hard drive out, put it into a new case you're good to go!
For video you want to make sure that your hard drive case supports Firewire 800!  This is mandatory.
My personal favorite, (and I own 5 of these) is Vantec's NexStar hard drive enclosure.  They accept any SATA 3.5" drive (I bought mine from a company called ComputerStop).  I have yet to have a single problem with any of them.  They are solid aluminum casing, you can literally throw them into your backback, drop them on the floor and your hard drive is fairly well protected from impact damage (at least you won't break the case with anything short of a sledgehammer).  I am currently looking at getting a second one of these:
    http://www.vantecusa.com/gl/product/view_detail/173
(My bad, this is an IDE case up to 750GB)
    This the one you want:
    http://www.vantecusa.com/gl/product/view_detail/354
As far as the hard drive, you can get a Seagate Baracuda drive 1TB at 7200rpm drive for about $60.  The case and hard drive together, maybe a few over $100 for the whole thing.  With shipping, and tax figure about $150.
Don't let the price fool you.  It will rock.
Story: I got an iOmega "raid" case with two Seagate drives in it and the iOemga case fried, but the hard drives were still good. Fortunately, they were in two removable trays.  I put them into two "rocketfish" hard drive cases almost 3 years ago and I am still using them every day today.
Moral of this story:  It's the quality of the hard drive that matters, not what case it's in.
Is it hard to set up?
Not at all.  You put the hard drive into a tray, (with Vantec case), screw it in.  It only goes in 1 way.  Plug in a power cable to the drive.  Slide the tray into the case (carefully, don't munch the power cable!) and screw it in place. You can literally do it in 10 minutes or less.  There are, of course instructions, but if you are reasonably clever, you can literally see what plugs into what just by looking at it.
Sorry for the long reply, but I have a lot of experience with external drives and I hope this helps others.
Finally, when you make it to the big time you can spend $400, get yourself a firewire RAID enclosure and you can upgrade to 4 external hard drives in 1 enclosure.  Figure $800 for that set up, but you can go up to 12 TB of drive space with that, or up to 3TB if you are running redundant discs.  But that's a whole other ballgame...
    Peace.

  • Backing Up a drive so it boots.

    Hi All,
8 months ago I purchased a Intel SSD 320 for my Mini. I cloned it from the existing 2.5" 5400 HD that wasin Mini. The OS  Lion on it is also tip top but doesnt have the update from earlier this year.
My new SSD has been fantastic but although I have TM set up on my server (Ubuntu) and that is also all fine I would like to update / synchronise my installed SSD with the older HD which is now installed in a SATA case via USB to my Mini so that I have a fall back drive to install should things go tittsup.
Now although I could delete the original HD and clone the the current Lion on SSD it seems pointless as I am sure there is a way of just telling the Mini to look for changes and simply update the USB connected drive so that it is a mirror image.
As the spare drive is available I am looking to do this in case the SSD fails for some reason and all I need do is swap the drives, albeit going back to a slower drive. (This is no issue but at least all data is safe).
What I don't want to happen is the the old drive changes items on the SSD. For example I spent some time clearing out stuff that was no longer relevant and really don't need a copy of it. Of course the old drive will have this on it.
What the best way of achieving the duplicate that will allow me to boot from the original drive as at present if I removed the the SSD and put in old HD it would start as normal as if nothing had changed.
    Your thoughts much appreciated,
    Michael
NB. Familiar with CCC and Super D

I may be missing something, but SuperDuper! smart update mode does that. that is, making the traget exactly like the source, but copying only changed/new files from the source, and deleting "orphaned" files from the target to make them indentical. that is it will synchonize the disks copying only what is necessary to do so. I beleive that this is available in the paid mode.
CCC also has the same mode available.

  • Re: 3rd gen ipod wont get out of disk mode

    Hi,
Iam going insane..had this problem for weeks now, when the ipod connects to the mac (tiger) it wants to change to disk mode all the time..it connects using firewire and the dock.
I have managed to wipe it using the disk utility, and re-install ver 2.3..but it still remains in disk mode, and yes i have tried numerous times the reset technique!, it just shows the apple logo then the dreaded folder with exclamation mark!!..the even stranger thing is, the only time it comes out of disk mode is when i plug the "car charger" into it, but only when the charge has reached a certain level!!!.. it seems iam doomed to using disk mode when connecting to my mac, then running out to the car and plugging it in to change over drom disk mode!! aaaarrrrgggghhhhh!!!!
    HELP!!!!

    Hi Richard,
The big problem is that it only seems to be in ipod mode when it feels like it!, it will sit in disk mode when connected to the mac, then i eject it and you would expect to see the ipod mode fire up and the main menu appear, but instead it shows the folder and exclamation mark, then it begins the resetting loop! and gets very warm (not good!)... but the only time ive had it in ipod mode was when i connected it to my car charger last week, after totally draining the thing!., but when i came to update it with itunes, it sat there comfortably for about 5 mins, then froze and reverted back into disk mode / exclamation folder!!?!?
    Any help is appreciated
