Satellite A660 - display seems to go out of "calibration"

I often hibernate rather than shutdown or restart, even if I switch to and from an administrator account to update Windows 7, Firefox, and antimalware. I find that the screen tends to get all washed out, as if someone cranked up the brightness and reduced the contrast. It's not quite the same in that the actual visual problem resembles a painted billboard that is being weathered down, like white dithering. It goes away after a reboot.
Is there some graphic thing that I can reset manually rather than going through a full reboot?

The circumstances under which it occurs is hard to characterize because it seems to take a long time to get to the point where I ask myself "what the heck, is the graphics degraded again?"
Maybe part of the reason is that I only use the machine for short durations each day -- if the degradation is correlated with system on-time.
Also, I think it's a gradual degradation, though I'm not sure.
That means that I'm never sure whether it's just my sleep-deprived eyes or whether it's actual degradation.
It's only after a reboot that I notice what a big difference it makes.
For these reasons, it might take a very long time to fully characterize the dependence both on using hibernation and standby.
I was hoping that this thread might elicit corroborations from those who also experience this.
The OS is the one for the notebook. The HDD has been replaced, so I simply use the Toshiba install discs, then use the Toshiba "Action Centre" to look for updates.
As for when I noticed this behaviour, it was after it was returned from a Toshiba for a repair of vibration, which as found to be due to a missing spacer after the local authorized service dealer tried to debug a frequent NVIDIA error. This incident was quite protraced -- it wasn't properly packaged, and the screen got smashed enroute.
So they replaced the screen.
I don't remember what the error was, but it was frequent, I also found many instances of it on the internet. Something about GE force.
However, ever since it came back from Toshiba, I never got that message, so I'm not sure if anything specific was done to fix it. I *do* know that I reinstalled the OS from scratch when it comes back.

Whats going on; why do I get lynched to pay an additional $59 for software to make my Satellite 3D work?

This probably sounds nuts; but my Toshiba Blu-Ray DVD software seems to have a DVD/Blu-ray prevention program in it. Preventing 3D and smaller issues.
It has been out of whack since I updated the software on the Toshiba site and when I updated the nVidia GTS 350M drivers.
That may be co-incidental to the problems which began in previous month/s; as I don`t always play discs on this laptop; so pinning a date when it went pear-shaped is harder.
But, after going through a nightmare (of not working on DVD or Blu-Ray on half my discs for months now); I installed the latest TRIAL ($59) Corel WinDVD 11 Pro player and everything (including 3D) works perfect again. But for 30 days only; until/unless I`m robbed of $59 additional that is.
The problem is/was;-
3D only worked on half of my Blu-Ray 3D discs using pre-installed (and later updated) Toshiba COREL WinDVD media PLAYER. Sometimes it only played 3D side by side; 2 images. No 3D. Some Blu-Ray 3D discs were fine ODDLY. Region code not an issue.
Toshiba DVD 3D player/upconvertor program was the worst (not the SD version, I dont use).
Toshiba (HD) 3D player would not recognise half of my Blu-ray 3D laptop disc drive content. "DVD drive not recognised" error message.
Toshiba DVD player itself would not upconvert any normal DVD to 3D.
Toshiba DVD player would only play NORMAL 2D when running upconvert (no 3D).
Toshiba DVD player would only play HALF-SPEED DVD when upconvert was disabled. When trying to play a DVD in normal 2D mode.
All settings were tried and altered to fix the problem around a thousand times.
Software uninstalled and re-booted and re-installed a dozen times each.
I also had to un-install the software and re-boot and re-install the following;-
nVidia graphics driver (from nVidia sites own 295.73 and re-install Update to the `older` nVidia Toshiba 260.51 driver).
I used to be able to upconvert DVDs to 3D using this laptop; so it did work many months ago; but now that has all stopped for months now.
Its a pain as I have un-installed everything and re-installed all the relevant software from the Toshiba home page; but no solution for the problem without getting mugged an extra $59.
I hate computers for the ten-thousandth time.

Its the last Microsoft product I will ever buy (Windows Ultimate rubbish [had to buy a new A3 color lazer printer as no Win 7 drivers for my existing laser printer]).
SAMSUNG (3D internet TV) products from now on. No computers for ten years. Until the rats get it right and stop experimenting on my wallet. $10,000 on PC products in the past 5 years and still being able to do simple things like watch a 3D movie is a hit and miss affair.
I`m rambling....because a hundred hours reading on how to get it working again has scrambled my head.

The Nvidia graphics always works fine on the test background page; which makes me think software; but all the relavant software has been updated. Re-installed and re-tried a hundred times with different settings.
I thought the discs were the problem. But 50 DVDs not working in 3D up-converting, or faulty all by themselves? And half of my 3D Blu-Ray collection?
I wondered if these these problems are deeper than this one system. Whether there was a systemic problem somewhere (besides blaming the buyer end-user).
Toshiba assist line in one call was a guy who knew far less than me and had to ask someone advice for every single part of the call. 2 hours to tell me to re-install the software in a long, slow, bit-by-bit way, eventually. We done everything they can do to help. Now they seem to blame the discs and don`t have any answer.
Microsoft x64 Ultimate says its roger all to do with them on their helpline/e-mail assist.
I tried nVidia to no avail;
Any ideas; do I bite the bullet and everyone eventually be forced bit by bit to pay for $59 software to get the thing working.

But firstly it would be really interesting to know what Satellite A660-xxx do you have exactly?
You said that you have installed the Win 7 ultimate.
According to the Toshiba page the notebook was preinstalled with Windows Home Premium. The preinstalled WinDVD was a full version (not trial) and you have not to pay for this software. In my case I have not to pay for any software (except MS Office :) )

So it seems that you dont use the preinstalled Win DVD but you have installed other version which was not preinstalledso you have to purchase such version if you want to use a full version of any software which is not part of Toshiba image.

Satellite A660-07U - Can't install new display driver

When I first got my laptop it wouldn't even boot out the box! So I googled the way to get it up and running and it wouldn't install Windows 7 32bit, so I installed Windows 7 64bit and that worked.
I am one of the users who is also having their laptop freeze on them constantly. I have done the Bios update and it is still doing it. So I decided to try updating the graphics drivers with the new ones from this website, but it seems they wont install. I got the Windows 7 64bit drivers first as I have Windows 7 64bit installed in my laptop. But it says it cant find the required hardware, I figured its because my laptop is not a 3D version, should that even matter?
So I then tried the 32bit drivers and it says im using wrong system os for those drivers.
So how about some drivers I can use?

Well, in my opinion it has nothing to do with 3D support. If you can find new driver updates for Satellite A660 they should work because they are tested by Toshiba.
As far as I know there is no A660 model with 3D support, thats only available on A665.
Fact is that 32bit drivers never work on 64bit operating systems. So just forget this point.
Satellite A660/07U seems to be an Australian model and belongs to PSAW3A series. On the Australian page there is only one display driver available for Windows 7 64bit
What you can try is the display driver from European page where you can find a similar model PSAW3E:

On this page I could found two driver version: 260.51 and 189.58. As far as I know latter one works properly without freeze.

Headphones usage on Satellite A660-BT2G22 -sound plays out of the speakers

When I plug headphones into my Satellite A660-BT2G22 Laptop the sound plays out of the speakers and the headphones.
There has to be a way for me to make the sound play only through the headphones and I would really love that because I am going off to college soon and will have a roommate and I will want to listen to my own music and stuff and not force him to hear my stuff all the time.

This notebook model is not known to me but check control panel and option for some audio manager there. On notebooks with Realtek sound card there is Realtek HD Audio manager.
Check all options there, especially small folder symbol placed at the right top side. When you click on it connector settings window will be open. Enable auto popup dialog.
Now, every time when headphones will be connected you can choose headphone as only device you want to use.
Please check it out.

Every display (TV, LCD, TFT, notebooks display, external display, etc.) might affect your eyes if you would not follow the rules recommended by manufacturers and eye specialist ;)
You should take a break between the computer work sessions and gaming.
You should keep distance to the monitor and be sure that your environment is bright enough
Read the user manual and ask your eye specialist how to avoid red eyes ;)

Need Intel HD display driver for my Satellite A660

I recently have tried to use Windows Movie Maker, but get error message to say the Intel HD driver installed is blocked. (version 8.15.10.2014).
When I try and update via the Intel updater am told cannot update as Operating Manufacturer has configured the device, but there is no more recent version on the driver downloads for my machine on the Toshiba support pages.
I have updated the Nvida card drivers no problem via the Nvida website, but how can I update the Intel one??Please advise as this is driving me nuts.
My machine is a Satellite A660 running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit, with an Intel Core i5-480m processor and Intel(R) HD Graphics card.

Intel Core i5-480M supports the Intel HD graphics and the newest driver could be downloaded directly from Intel page:

The installation is a little bit tricky.
First of all you would need to download the ZIP package where all the singles driver files are zipped in the folder.
Then you should update the driver within the device manager.
Here you have to start the Advanced installation procedure which allows you to choose the downloaded and unzipped folder.
This update procedure works for me like a charm

Satellite A660 - diagnostic to control HD spin-up/down

I got my Satellite A660 back from the shop. They replaced the HD due to a high Reallocated Sector Count in a S.M.A.R.T. report, and they also replace the mobo because of BSODs and NVIDIA display driver stoppages.
Ever since getting it back, I've been trying to track down the source of a vibration felt at the touch pad (finger actually tingles). When I reported it to Tech Support, they asked me to send it into their depot, which I will do, but I was wondering if there was some kind of testing I could do before their box arrives. Since I don't have another machine, it would sure help to be able to figure out the cause without sending it in (but I don't want to take the computer apart).
However, if nothing can be done about it even if I find out a likely cause, it might speed things up if I provide them information on the things that seem to cause the vibration. In order to possibly avoid sending it in, I asked whether such vibrations were necessarily harmful (I was thinking specifically about long term consequences on the HD). They thought it might. So send it in I will.
The vibration isn't correlated with the fan-on times. At least not the one that whirs every few seconds and causes hot air to come out of the vent. I am assuming that there is only one fan, based on a technician's information. I was wondering if it might be correlated with the spin-up of the HD. Is there a diagnostic app that lets the user control whether the disk spins?

The notebook switched off automatically because of the high temperature this is kind of notebooks self-protection feature. The notebook powers off to avoid some hardware damage.

I dont think this could cause such issue the cooling modules are controlled by BIOS.
Even if the Toshiba tools would not be installed, the notebooks temperature should not goes up to an critical level
So I think there must be other reason for this issue.
It could be possible that your cooling modules are not clean and dust prevent the air from circulation it could be also possible that cooling vents are clogged. I recommend cleaning the cooling fans with an compressed air spray

Satellite A660-149 - Tosh utility disappeared!

Would someone pl. help me trace the following utility which I've had till recently on my brand new Satellite A660-149 but now it's gone (maybe through some fault of mine).
It took the form of a rectangle that would hide at the edge of the screen and would (inconveniently, most of the time) pop out whenever the cursor hit its outline. One of its 3 buttons caused a box to appear where you could select one of various pre-set options for the display according to ambient lighting, one of these options being user defined.
I found this utility most useful for quickly changing the display adjustments whenever I had to move my laptop around.
I hardly had time to look into what this utility was called and where it was residing, before I lost it without trace.
A prize to anyone who helps me rediscover it ?!

I'm having the same results as you, with Flash Cards. As a novice I haven't looked into these things properly yet, but it seems to me the tool I'm after isn't related to Flash Cards. The closest I could maybe describe it is: a control for ambient light. BTW I don't seem to have a functioning Ambient Light Sensor, i.e. the button next to the Power button (numbered 13 in the Manual) - it must've been disabled for my model. The Manual says: *The Ambient Light Sensor automotically adjusts picture & contrast etc etc. By utilizing up to 8 different contrast settings, you will see the best picture possible in any room environment.* Well, I wonder: the utility I'm after with its (as far as I remember) 8+ lighting presets, must've been a kind of compensation/replacement for the missing automatic Ambient Light Sensor. As I said, it took the form of a (maybe) 4cm x 1cm rectangle hiding at the edge of the screen.

Satellite A660-18N hanging and needs hard reboot

My Satellite A660-18N hangs every other day about 2/3 times. I cannot press ctrl + alt + del and the mouse does not move. I have to hold down the power button to reboot it manually. It started about 2 weeks after I got it which was in September. I watch a lot of videos online (and offline) and usually after the screen freezes/hangs, the audio continues and stretches. I thought that this was a problem with IE8 so I switched to Google Chrome but this still continues. This problem also occurs offline. Also, after my laptop hangs, the fan speeds up so I thought it was an overheating problem. I bought a cooling mat a few days ago and the system still hangs. I'm not sure what to do now, can anyone help?

I'm having the same problem as the OP, with my A660-11M.
At the moment the display is freezing a few times every day and it's been like this for the last week. Before that, (almost) no problems for a few months after having similar problems.
So, it seems to be coming in bursts which is, needless to say, bizarre.
I too experiences it mainly while watching video (and similarly the audio would continue after the freeze) so I disabled Hardware Acceleration in the FlashPlayer settings after reading this post:

But this didn't help.
Then I thought it might be Chrome, so I switched to Firefox 4.0.1 but this didn't help either.
Now, I have disabled the Flash plugin to see if that works - too early to say so far.
BTW, these days the crashing is occuring mostly when I am NOT playing video - although I don't play much video anyway.

Satellite A660 - Not finding external DVD drive

Hey guys. Newbie posting out of total desperation and needing help! I have posted in other forums with no luck. I bought a Samsung SH-D162D DVD Drive in a USB enclosure to connect to my Satellite A660 via USB.
I cannot get Windows 7 to find it! When I plug in the USB cable the balloon comes up to say it has been installed (sometimes), I can see it on for about 1 or 2 minutes then it drops off. It isnt listed in my hardware or anything. Its not found in Disk Management or My Devices so it isnt a case of changing the drive letter - I cant find the drive to change it. I have also tried to find the upper and lower settings in regedit. Couldnt find them so couldnt delete them as advised in other posts of this nature.
It is set to master, the IDE connector and power connectors are fine. Its gotta be a Windows 7 problem cause it does show up very breifly. In the minute or 2 its there I cant do anything with it. It just hangs although it will open and close. Ive googled it and cant find anything. Mainly registry issues but they didnt help.
Ive also connected it up to another laptop with XP and had no problems so I know the DVD Rom works fine and all the cables are ok. Ive tried in all 4 USB ports on my laptop and also turned off all energy settings. All with no luck. And I also have every Windows 7 update.
Heres exactly what happens from power off on the enclosure.
1 - I plug in the USB lead then turn on power to the enclosure.
2 - I quickly go to Start, and I can see the DVD Rom drive E next to my laptops dvd rom.
3 - The green bar at the top starts filling up from left to right and gets about half way then suddenly the DVD Rom icon disappears and so does the green bar.
4 - It then flashes up under the laptops DVD Rom icon with a Local Disk drive E but only for a split second.
5 - Sometimes a balloon comes up saying installing device, then device successfully installed...but not every time.
And thats it. I'm at a total loss and cant work it out, so any help is really appreciated!

So if you have already connected the external drive to another computer and this worked properly, it seems to be a driver or compatibility issue between your external DVD drive and and your Satellite A660
It will be connected to USB port so have you tried to remove all USB ports from device manager? After this you should restart your computer and the USB ports will be recognized from device manager automatically. Furthermore I would also try updating the chipset driver. Newest version you can download on official Toshiba website:

Have you also tested other devices on your A660 if they work properly?

Satellite A660 What partitions to copy in creating bootable clone?

I have a Toshiba Satellite A660 running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. From surfing forum threads, it seems that Toshiba has a unique way of partitioning up the HDD for a notebook. From Disk Management and PowerQuest Partition Table Editor, my 640GB HDD has 4 partitions:
Partition 1: Windows RE, 1.46 GB
* "Active", likely contains boot info
* Not large enough to contain Windows 7 image
* Actual Windows 7 image likely in partition 3 or 4
Partition 2: 559.5 GB NTFS C-drive
Partition 3: 22.37 GB Hidden Installed File Systems
Partition 4: 12.83 GB Hidden Installed File Systems
The closest that I could find to a description of partitions 1,3,4 is http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/619983-solved-mystery-partition-toshiba-notebook.html for a VISTA system in 2007. Partition 1 is likely for booting. Partitions 3 and 4 contain some sort of recovery files for alternate languages.
Though I will ask Tech Support about the partitions, I don't expect them to know. Even if they do, it is on the phone, which leaves me no documentation.
1) I was wondering if anyone can confirm (or point to online documentation that confirms) the above suspicions of the purposes and contents of the partitions?
2) Furthermore, how can I tell which of partition 3 and 4 contain the recovery files for the language of the installed Windows 7, which is English?
3) Finally, I intend to clone all partitions except the one containing the unused language recovery files. This will be my first crack at cloning or handling partitions in anyway (never done an image). Is this plan sane?
The intent is for the cloned HDD to be a complete bootable drop-in replacement for the source HDD in its entirety. I will be using Norton Ghost. At this point, I am not interested in creating recoverable images, though I might explore that down the road.

I'm glad you posted. The first thing I did in response was to figure out how to make recovery discs, then make them.
I was going to clone all partitions because I wasn't absolutely sure about the purposes of them all. The thread that I linked to in my original post was speculative, and also referred to a different machine & OS. However, if you're absolutely certain that partitions 3 & 4 are for recovery, then it does raise the question of why clone them.
I think there still are reasons, though not everyone would think them worthwhile. It's for redundancy and convenience. From surfing around, Toshiba designs laptops so that you can recover to a factory image by holding down 0 when booting up. Kind of handy if I'm not at home (or in my home city) or can't conveniently access my recovery discs -- maybe I lose them! I'm not about to test that disc-less recovery on my laptop, but even if that feature *wasn't* present, it's nice to know that I don't have to worry about losing my recovery discs. The partitions don't take up much of the HDD, and the HDD is way, way bigger than I will ever need.
However, in order to clone all partitions, I will have to shrink the C-drive partition, which means the locations of the recovery partitions will shift. I'm not sure if this will break the disc-less recovery function.
As well, I would like the cloning software to resize the C-drive partition in the cloning process so that the partition size doesn't have to be resized in the source drive. According to anecdotes, both Norton Ghost and Acronis True Image can do this, and create a bootable target HDD. I was wondering if anyone can suggest reasons to prefer one over the other.
Ghost's *trial* version is handicapped and cannot do what is required, though they have a refund period for a purchased, fully-functional version. I will be looking into Acronis True Image. As for ease of use, would anyone who has tried both be able to comment?

Satellite A660 keeps crashing

My Tosh Satellite A660-11M PSAW3E (Windows 7 Ultimate) was working fine until I installed the MS March 2012 security updates which included the latest update for MS Office Pro 2007. After the install it immediately started crashing soon after boot up and the Action Centre kept saying that a new power driver was available.
I used System Restore to restore back to just before the updates and that seemed to help - the Action Centre said that there was no problems - and the system seemed to be OK. Some of the MS Mar 2012 updates reinstalled and the crashing problem returned.
I used System Restore again to go back to the pre update state. However despite returning to pre update state and manually uninstalling the Office Pro 2007 update, my A660 continues to suddenly crash at frequent but different intervals - some times it is OK for an hour or 2 and other times it crashes within minutes of boot up.
Any ideas and help would be very welcome as I am tearing my hair out over this.

No I have not done either the HDD recovery process or used a Recovery Disk. I have just tried to get the system back to the pre update state using Windows 7 Ultimate System Restore.
I feel I cannot risk a full recovery situation until I have at least backed up my valuable files (loads & loads of them and I'm frantically doing that now) to a portable drive as I cannot afford to lose them. Although I do normal backups I am at the moment about 1000km away from my normal base where my usual backup system & past backups are.
The system has now run for over an hour, after 2 crashes in quick succession without a problem, but I feel it could give up at any time.
When I can I will try reverting to factory settings but at the moment I cannot take the risk of screwing up the laptop and losing data & programs.
I do not know for certain if the MS updates (all or one) are responsible but the timing between "no problems" & "crashing" causes suspicion that they may have a hand in the problem.

I have a toshiba satellie 07u machine. but i cant seem to find drivers for this on toshiba site for any other model...when i chose "computers" on suppport page it doesnt let me chose the satellite.......please help

Have you read what I wrote in my last posting? As you can see on this page you can search for drivers choosing your notebook model or using model/part number. Have you checked this second option?
Does it work for you?
Have you tried to open this page using different browsers?
For instance, using IE9 I have the same problem but Opera or Chrome it works properly.

Satellite A660-11M: regular crashes, sometimes even before the BIOS...

Hello,
I purchased one month ago an Satellite A660-11M.
I set up a double boot windows 7 / ubuntu 10.04, and I experienced several times a complete freeze of the system under both OS. Moreover, after a freeze the laptop is really hard to reboot: it generally freezes several times in a row, and most of the time there is no screen display at all (I cannot even see the BIOS lines, nor the toshiba logo).
I read several threads with the same diagnosis, and it seems to be likely to come from the AC adapter.
Is there a way to be sure that it comes from it, and if yes what can I do about it ? If I send my computer in warranty, what are the chances that this issue is fixed?

Hello and thank you for your previous answer.
After several days of chaotic use of my computer, I have some other symptoms:
- crashes can happen under both windows and linux, under any kind of application (firefox, warcraft 3, windows startup, linux startup).
- when there is a crash, the hard drive seems to go on, however: the picture is frozen, generally the sound is frozen as well (yet not always) and neither the mouse nor the keyboard are answering. If I press the maj key, the led usually signalling the maj mode doesn't react. I then have no other choice than pressing the power key 5 secs...
- after a crash, the reboot is very painful: it crashes generally several times during the boot process (under win 7 and linux) and there is a very weird stuff happening: the video card seems to remember the crash, ie for example what happened once is: I got a crash under Win7. I rebooted directly under Linux, and Linux booted AUTOMATICALLY in safe video mode (it happened once under windows as well). Under linux I extracted the Xorg.1.log file, and here are the 2 lines in error:
(EE) [drm] failed to open device
(EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X driver not found)
However, when the boot is normal, I don't have such a thing, which means that the driver is actually working well.
It seems that each time I boot in safe mode (under both win and ubuntu) everything works fine. So the issue may actually come from the video card (GeForce 330M). I didn't change the factory driver under windows, but it is more recent than the one present on Toshiba website...
