Satellite C850-1NU does not boot Win 8.1 - Error Code 0xc0000098

Windows 8.1 will not boot
Laptop is *Toshiba Satellite C850 1NU*, as from Saturday it will not boot up!
*Error states "The boot configuration Data File doesn't contain valid information for an operating system.*
*File:\ BCD*
*Error Code 0xc0000098*
I have transferred recovery tools from another laptop to a USB stick and then enter bios of the Toshiba Laptop to make the USB drive to boot first.
It then comes up with the recovery tools.
I clicked on "Refresh your pc" it then reports "The drive where Windows is installed is locked. Unlock the drive and try again".
I clicked on "Reset your pc" it then reports "Unable to reset your pc. A required drive partition is missing".
I have also tried "Automatic Repair" and it reports "Repair couldn't repair your PC".
I am at a loss as to get my sons laptop up and running again. Advice would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Further to my question, *I have now resolved the issue.*

I used a usb stick and copied recovery from another windows 8 laptop.

  • Blinking cursor and Satellite C850-1NU does not boot up

    Hi
    I did something really stupid!
Recently I installed ubuntu on My toshiba laptop. During a part where it was downloading things, I turned my laptop off because i thought it was frozen. I turned it back on, but all there was was a black screen with a white flashing "_". I put in an old Windows XP disc to see if i could install it but, still nothing happened.
And the laptop came installed with Windows 8 x64 if that helps.
Do I need to buy a new BIOS chip, or what?

    Hi
The issue is not related to BIOS problem.
The blinking cursor in the left upper corner can appear due to faulty HDD or RAM malfunction.
It can be possible that you damaged the HDD booting partition due to the shutdown.
But this is easy to check
You should power up the unit and press F2. Now you should access the BIOS.
Now in case the HDD is OK; you should see the HDD on the first BIOS page with all the HDD details. In case the HDD is visible in BIOS, you should go to next step.
Next step: try to reinstall the system again.
In case you want to install an Linux or another Windows system you have to disable firstly the secure boot option in BIOS. Also you have to switch from UEFI to CSM mode. This is also part of the BIOS settings.
After that you could boot from CD or USB flash stick in order to reinstall the system

    Hi
The message says that you have to install the system again using recovery media
As far as I know the notebook was preinstalled with the WIN 8 64BIT system.
You can use the HDD recovery option
Power on the unit and press F12.
Then choose HDD recovery option appearing in the boot menu.
Follow the instruction on the screen
    Good luck!

  • Satellite M30-107 does not boot correctly after Recovery disk usage

    Hi
I've recently got hold of a second hand toshiba Satellite M30-107 laptop, and decided to freshen it up.
I used the toshiba recovery disk, but after doing so the laptop no longer loads windows.
When turned on it shows the Toshiba start up disk for about a second then goes to a blank screen and freezes.
When turned off and on again a screen comes up reporting an error in shutting down and gives the options to start in safe mode etc. but choosing any of the options causes the machine to freeze.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
    Thanks
    jt

    Hi
Sounds a little bit like the notebook does not boot due to the Windows software issue
Did you recover the M30 with the original Toshiba recovery CD which was supplied with this M30 unit?
Maybe Im wrong but for me it looks like a wrong recovery CD was used and an image with non compatible drivers was installed
You could try to install the OS from original Microsoft Win XP CD and could check if it would be possible to get the notebook ruining using clean OS.
In such case we ( you and me ;) ) could find out if this issue could be related to the software or hardware.
    Bye

  • Satellite L745D-S4214 Does not boot; HDD recovery partition not working

I tried to apply the recent windows 7 updates and my laptop no longer boots.  I tried to press F12 and select the HDD Recovery partition, but it does not boot regardless.  There is a message that it does not communicate to a specific device.  I believe the address called out was 0xc0000e9, but I am going by memory.  I never created a recovery CD because I thought I was covered by the HDD partitions.  This was purchased on 10/26/2012, so it should still be under warranty.
    PLEASE HELP!

Hi I'm going to assume that your recovery works like mine and that the recovery partition is still good and not corrupted.
Shut down your PC. Press F12 and select HDD recovery. Click enter. This should start the recovery from the hidden recovery partition.
PS I would advise you to make the recovery discs or USB recovery Try this first.
    Perform a power cycle
Even when your laptop is off and unplugged, residual power can still be held in some components. While this is normal, clearing it can help with boot problems. Perform these steps to complete what’s called a power cycle.
Ensure the laptop is turned off.
Unplug the laptop's AC power cable.
Remove the battery (if the model has a removable battery).
Unplug all wires or peripherals. This includes CDs, DVDs, USB sticks, mice, printers, and any other accessories.
Hold down the power button for thirty seconds.
    Reattach the battery.
Connect the AC adaptor to the power socket that was confirmed to be working in the first step.
Connect the other end of the AC adaptor to your computer.
    Try starting the computer.
If your laptop starts normally now, you're done!

  • Satellite P840/016 does not boot from CD or DVD

Using F2 enabled the BIOS to boot from optical drive, saved and re-started. Finds the bootable CD created from the same laptop using the repair disc from Windows 7 recovery but does not boot.
Tried Ubuntu DVD which works as boot disk on all other laptops - still does not boot.
Changed the setting in BIOS to non-secure - same problem.

Thanks - tried this pressing F12. Message appears on the screen to press any key to boot from DVD. Key pressed, the DVD is read and then delay with blank screen. The laptop goes back to start screen and than goes to boot from the HDD. Also tried making USB as bootable. Pressed F12 and selected USB as boot device. Reads the USB and after a period of time boots from HDD.
Checked DVD driver - it is the latest.
Operating system is Windows 8 pro.
RAM is 8GB, processor is I7 and HDD is 1 TB. Laptop is only 3 weeks old

  • Satellite L305D-S5934 does not boot - blank screen

    I have a problem with a 2 year old satellite l305d-s5934.
On switching on, the power light comes on but the hard drive light does not and the screen stays blank.
I have tried removing the battery and restarting without it after pressing power button, but nothing changes.
Any advice on fixing the problem would be welcome.
    Thanks

    Hi
Remove battery, disconnect the AC adaptor and leave the notebook disconnected for a longer period of time. After that connect both parts can try to power up the unit once again
If this does not help, check the RAM. Remove the single module and test both slots using each module.
Of course it could be possible that both modules are faulty and this procedure would not help you.
In worst case the motherboard might be affected in such case only mobo replacement would be helpful.

  • Satellite A10-131 does not boot from Recovery or any other disk

I have a client who has a A10-131. I have had to reload the OS, but the new DVD-Writer will not boot the recovery CD or any other original Windows CD for that matter. Is anyone able to help with this problem. I need to find out what solution is possible with such a problem.
    Thank You.

How did you try to boot from the drive???
Did you change the boot order in the BIOS???
Usually several boot possibilities are available.
    1. You can press the C button immediately after notebook powering to detect the CD/DVD drive booting
    2. you can use the F12 button to get the booting menu
    3. you will change the boot order in BIOS to ODD firstly
But its interesting to know if your new ODD is compatible with the notebook

  • Satellite A200-1M4 does not boot and black screen

I really hope someone can help.
After 15 months my Toshiba A200 seems to have given up the ghost.
I tried to switch it on today and although the blue stand-by LED came on and the orange light on the disk drive there were no other signs of life.
I tried and tried but it just would not boot and the screen did nothing but remain blank.
I tried taking the battery out for more than 30mins, pressing F4 - but nothing.
I have no memory cards inserted or additional hardware such as a webcam. Everything has worked fine before now.
I am not very technical so of you do know how to help then please explain as simply as possible.
I really appreciate any help you may be able to offer!

    Hello Sarah
You cannot expect that someone here on this forum can offer exact diagnostic and say for sure what the problem can be. We can here just speculate what the problem can be.
If you want to know for sure what the problem is contact nearest service and let them check your notebook.
It can be mainboard failure, maybe just defective CPU or defective board electronic. Who knows?
So, contact service and ask for help. Inform you about repair costs and at the end you can make decision what to do. If the repair is too expensive for you, you can sell defective notebook on eBay and later buy a new one. I have done this last year with my old Tecra.

  • Satellite C660-108 does not boot if USB Bluetooth dongle connected

    Hiya,
I hope you would help me.
I am having an issue with my bluetooth dongle and satellite c660-108.
It works all perfectly. It connects devices via bluetooth and I can do everything I want.
But then when I am shutting down laptop and turning on again it won't go if the bluetooth dongle is still in the usb socket.
I see Toshiba screen and then it hangs with black screen and blinking cursor in top left corner.
I have to turn it off, take out the bluetooth dongle and then turn it on again.
And then windows starts. After that I have to put in bluetooth dongle again if I want to work with it.
It is not a huge issue but it is a bit annoying when I have to take out the bluetooth and put it back again to get the windows started.
I am currently running under win 8.1 but had it already with win 8.
    Anybody any ideas??

    >I see Toshiba screen and then it hangs with black screen and blinking cursor in top left corner.
Mostly the blinking cursor appears because the notebook cannot find an bootable device.
It looks like the unit cannot switch to the HDD while the USB dongle is connected.
I would recommend you checking the booting order in the BIOS.
Set the HDD at the first place and the USB as last possible booting device.
Save the changes and check if it helps.

  • Satellite C50-A0113 does not boot into windows

    Hello.
    I own a toshiba satellite C50-A0113 laptop running windows 8 64bit.
Ive had it for exactly two years a few days ago i restarted it and then when it starts it stops at the "Toshiba leading innovation" screen and then it says scanning and repairing drive C while on that screen it starts the process and then stops at 34%.
that was two days ago now it just gets stuck on the "toshiba leading innovation screen " then after a few minutes it says preparing automatic repair.
It then leaves that screen and goes to a black screen for a few minutes then flashes the blue screen written "your computer encountered a problem" then restarts.
I tried creating a bootable windows 8 disc in order to repair but it doesnt even boot into the usb.
I restart and press f12 in order to select the media to boot into. It checks the media goes to the toshiba screen then just goes black for some minutes untill it restarts.
May i please know what is wrong and how can i possibly fix this because the problem is clearly not my hard drive.
I removed it and put into another laptop and it was fine

    Dear aya11,
Defiantly it is a operating system issue.
did you check in the BIOS mode??
if your laptop is working fine in the BIOS mode then you have to reinstall operating system.
if you have preloaded operating system then you can recover your operating system.
    recovery option is :*
if you are using window 7 in your laptop then,
just restart your laptop and hold the "0" numeric key..u get option HDD recovery just enter in HDD recovery
then it showing popup for format laptop just click on the yes ..you get a next option and your laptop is getting restart.
if you are using window 8 in your laptop then
just restart your laptop and hold the "F12" numeric key..you get option HDD recovery just enter in HDD recovery
then it showing popup for format laptop just click on the yes ..you get a next option and your laptop is getting restart.
in case both option is not working then u have install a new OS.
    Thnx :)

  • Re: Satellite C855-1EL does not boot Windows system

I've been having trouble with my Satellite C855-1EL lately and now can't even boot up Windows.
The black screen reads the following:
Intel UNDI, PXE-2.1 (build 083)Copyright (C) 1997-2000 Intel CorporationThis Product is covered by one or more of the following patents:US5,307,459, US5,434,872, US5,732,094, US6,570,884, US 6,115,776 andUS6,327,625
Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller Series v1.24 (10/07/10)
    press keys to device ....
and when I formatted I find no hard disk

For successful OS installation HDD must be recognized by BIOS and listed there. If I understand you right HDD is not listed in BIOS settings.
    Is this correct?
Try to set BIOS to default settings and check it again. If there is no some hardware related issue HDD must be recognized. In case that HDD is not visible for BIOS your next step could be HDD exchange and test with new HDD inside.
By the same result Im afraid you need professional help. It is possible that HDD controller is defective.

  • Satellite L300-1G9 does not boot in safety nor normal mode

    Hello,
My computer will not load up from safety mode nor normal mode.
Although Macafee, my virus protection software provider believe their recent problems are to blame they have offered no solution and instead have asked me to load windows with my 'installation disk'.
I cannot find this, where do I get it from? (p.s. my computer is the Satellite L300 - 1G9 series.
    Many thanks in advance.

    Hi
If you are not able to boot up the Windows then try firstly the HDD recovery option:
    http://aps2.toshiba-tro.de/kb0/HTD9102IR0000R01.htm
If this will not work then you need the recovery disk which you could order here:

  • Satellite A200 PSAFCA does NOT boot

    Here's the story.
I got this Australian laptop (A200 PSAFCA) that was shipped with Vista, but just like everyone I can't stand Vista so I removed it.
Tried installing XP and to my surprise XP installation actually detected the hard drive and will format it no problem.
Then starts copying files and at the first reboot it reboots fine and then it gets stuck on the splash "TOSHIBA" logo screen and then reboots itself and continues over and over....
There isn't much I can do in the BIOS, and yes it detects the HDD in there.
I go so annoyed and even tried installing Vista back on the lappy and omg... it will not detect the Hard drive even for the setup.
WHATS WITH THIS!!!! it's the first laptop I've ever tried formatting and I never thought it'll be this ridiculously hard.
Can someone shed some light on what I could atleast try? I'm out of ideas.
P.s does anyone know if re-formatting Toshiba laptops is out of warranty range?
    Thanks guys.

    Hi
I do not know how it looks like on Australian Satellite A200 notebooks but on European notebook models there is series where you can install WXP (WXP SP2 very important) without using SATA driver and also models where you need SATA driver (implemented using F6 when installations starts).
As I wrote in my previous posting one time I have missed something up and HDD was not visible even for original recovery DVD. After changing the BIOS settings to default, the HDD was visible again.
Please make the same and try to use WXP SP2 installations CD again. I have installed WXp several times without any problems.
I also agree with Kody. Check Toshiba support page and try to use SATA driver.
