Satellite Pro A300 - Freezes in normal mode

Before I proceed, I wanna say that I'm no expert at computers. All these technological terms doesn't really make sense to me.
Hi.
I am currently typing this on Safe Mode as if I start Windows normally, the laptop would simply freeze and will not respond. It would take about 5 minutes at start-up, then if you try to access a program it would just simply stop responding and after a while would just freeze.
This is quite a bad time to lose the laptop as my sister is currently doing a course in order to get a childcare qualification. The laptop is practically crucial.
Thanks,
Shivam.

Hi!
Its really strange to say what the reason is for this.
I think it must be a driver or software issue why Windows does only work in safe mode because in safe mode the drivers will not be loaded.
Did you update a driver or software application? Maybe you have a virus on the computer
I think the easiest way is you backup all important files on external HDD for example and start to reinstall Windows using Toshiba recovery disk.
If you have the preinstalled Windows Vista you can use the HDD recovery function. Go in the advanced boot menu (F8), choose repair my computer and select the Toshiba recovery function. Follow the screen instructions.
If you dont have Vista you can also use the Toshiba recovery disk.

  • Satellite Pro A300-28R: slow boot and freezing on Explorer/Internet

I have recently bought a Satellite Pro A300-28R and I am quite disappointed about the performance.
    1) From the specs it looks like a decent laptop but with booting time of about 3 minutes, "please wait" it is surely not impressing me given the fact that i have not installed anything yet...
    2) I will try to uninstall applications like tempro but still I am puzzled by the slow reaction on internet pages.
For example when i go on google and start typing something most of the times the cursor freezes and i have to wait a few seconds before I am able to see what i am typing.
I have only bought it last Friday and I have not used much but surely a bit of a disappointment so far.
Any ideas why the cursor freezes on google or on the internet explorer toolbar?
for info i am using Vista Business OS and Internet explorer
    any help welcome

    Hello
About slow boot you can read very interesting and useful thread under http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=134947
I hope this will help you to understand why this can happen.
After first start you can be faced with this behaviour. Few days updates will be downloaded and installed in the background and you will notice high HDD activity. These activities can slow down notebook performance and what you can notice is this slow typing reaction or freezing video play.
So my advice is to disable automatic updates and set it when updates are available you should get notification but you can start it manually. These all possible vista updates installation is for me big mistake because if you check available updates many of them are optional and some of them are driver updates (3 of them) these updates must not be installed.
Maybe you should install recovery image again. don't connect it to internet and do what is described in posted thread. After optimizing preinstalled OS change settings for Windows update and connect it to internet. Check list of available updates and install important and recommended stuff only.
I do always so and I am happy with my Satellite P200 and new A300. Both of them runs well and I am satisfied with performance.

  • Why does Satellite Pro A300 not start when the power button is pressed?

Suddenly my new Satellite Pro A300 will not start correctly when the power button is pressed. The situation is this: When I press the power button the Toshiba opening picture (Leading Innovation) appears and disappers quickly. Then there is a black screen for about 30 seconds. Then there is a rectangular frame with the text Microsoft Corporation underneath. And nothing happens however long I wait.
In order to get on with the starting proces I then shut down the computer by pressing down the power button until the computer stops. ("The hard way to shut down")
Now I press the power button shortly to turn on the computer. Then the computer starts normally with the Toshiba opening picture and after a few seconds I am asked to open the computer in safe mode or in normal mode. I now choose to open in normal mode and the computer opens normally and is ready to work.
What shall I do to get a normal start procedure?

When notebook starts normally (after choosing normal mode) shut down your notebook properly using START > Shut down option. Next start should be normal.
When the OS is switched down on irregular way you will be always asked how to start it again (safe or normal mode).
The same happen on my Satellite A300.

  • Satellite Pro A300-1A8 Vista system restore not working

I wanted to use system restore due to attempting to reconfigure administrator rights, its somehow deleted all my shortcuts on my menu and messed about with a few things.
However when i try to use system restore (i have attempted to use it in safe mode, via cmd promp, both together and normal boot), yet all seem to stay hanging in the same green page where it reads something along the lines of 'system is initialising restore etc' (spending 45 mins on this page before i get fed up and shut down the computer). I have tried using different restore points but the same occurs. It like its not working at all.
Can anyone help with this please?
My laptop is a Satellite Pro A300-1A8.

    Hi
You mean the Vista tool which can be found in (Start button -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore) does not work and you cannot set back the Vista to the early time point?
Well, usually there is no much to do to restore the OS to the early time point you have to star the system restore tool and have to choose the restore point. Then everything should run automatically.
If this doesnt work then something is messed up as you said in your posting above somehow deleted all your shortcuts on my menu and messed about with a few things possibly the OS has been messed to.
Try to clean the OS using the free software for example CCLeaner. I use it too. Its great. Repair and clean the OS and check if its possible to use the system restore tool again.
I found also this MS page:

  • Cooling behavior after BIOS Flash - Satellite Pro A300

    Hello everybody,
I have two laptops, Satellite Pro A300 and Satellite A300. Both have the same configuration, C2D E8300,2GB,ATI 3650 512MB and so on.....
Today I flashed BIOS to the latest version (from V3.90 to V4.20) on both of them. On the version 3.90 cooling was OK, fan worked only when it was necessary. But now after flashing the BIOS fan works permanently, it does not stop.
What I did make, in Vista's Power Options under Toshiba Power Saver I changed the Cooling Method from Maximum Performance to Battery Optimized, the cooling reversed to the normal operation, but the cover (keyboard area) became hot a little bit.
My question is, what is the problem with cooling in the new version (v4.20)? And how to solve this problem?
Again, problem didn't exist before BIOS flashing and the problem is on both computers.
    Thank you for your help!
    Best regards,
    Osman

    Hi mate
    Thanks for the feedback
    > So what do you recommend me, to stay on Battery Optimized mode? Generally speaking, what's the difference between Maximum Performance and Battery Optimized modes in Power Saver?
Usually its advisable to use the Battery Optimized mode only when the AC adaptor is not connected to the notebook and the notebook uses only the battery power.
In such case the notebook does not waste the power using Battery Optimized mode and you could use the notebook much longer using battery only.
Using Battery Optimized mode the CPU and cooling modules run with lowest performance and the CPU does not create high heat dissipation.
This leads to a lower internal temperature and lower usage of cooling modules.
    Bye

  • Satellite Pro A300 crashes with blank screen

I have a Satellite Pro A300, AMD CPU, ATI graphics, Vista.
The system worked fine for a year but a few months ago it started crashing, the screen went blank, not blue, anything running, like music, stopped. This can happen after several hours or minutes, or even whilst it is re-booting. All my software is up-to-date, both from Microsoft and Toshiba. I have rebuilt my system from scratch and the symptoms came back.
At first I thought this might be a heat problem but I have monitored this but I don't think this is it. It has crashed seconds after leaving sleep mode when it has not had a chance to warm up.
    Anybody got any ideas?
    Simon

    Hi buddy,
Theoretically it could be an overheating problem so the screen went blank due built in overheat protection...
You should try to clean your notebook using compressed air spray. This could blow out the dust from the cooling ventilators and therefore its not necessary to disassemble the notebook.
In your case I would recommend reading this article:

  • Satellite Pro A300-1DZ does not find HDD after BIOS update

    Hi everyone,
I have recently purchased a secondhand Satellite Pro A300 1DZ.
Put a fresh copy of Windows xp home on it.
I then went on to install all the drivers needed from Toshiba's own site and at the end of this I thought it may be a good idea to update the bios????
OH DEAR what a big mistake.
Now the netbook will NOT start windows.
So I thought thats ok I will just start from the begginning and reinstall windows again, but it is telling me it cannot find a hard disk on my netbook?
    aaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I am going crazy,
Could someone please tell me how to fix this? Thank you x

    Hi
I think the option SATA mode has been set to AHCI and therefore the Windows XP cannot find the HDD.
This is because of the SATA controller.
You can set the SATA mode from AHCI mode to compatible mode and this will allows you to install the Win XP on the notebook without the usage of SATA drivers.
So, youve got two options if you want to install Win XP:
AHCI mode -> but you have to include SATA drivers
Compatible mode -> Win XP installation possible without the SATA drivers

  • Satellite Pro A300 - shutdown issue

I have a brand new Satellite Pro A300-15V, which I have downgraded from Vista Business to XP Professional, using the original recovery disc.
Now I have problem shutting down the computer. When I click "Turn Off" it just shuts down and then restarts after a minute or two. Also, I can't bring it back from hibernation unless I shut it down on the button first.
    Can anyone help, pls?

    Hi guys
Im not 100% sure if my advice could help you but what you should do is firstly BIOS update to the latest version. Ive noticed that new BIOS were released last week for some A300 notebooks series.
After the BIOS update disable the WakeUp on LAN settings in the BIOS.
You could also disable the options like: "Wakeup on keyboard" and "Critical battery WakeUp"
    *@cfrigerio:*
It seems youve already disabled this function but please check also the LAN card setting in the device manager -> LAn card properties -> Advanced tab.
There should be an option likes Wakeup on link, Wakeup using APM mode, etc
    Disable these options!
Furthermore please check if any 3rd party applications dont wakeup the notebook.
Sometimes the scheduled tasks could be responsible for the irregular waking ups.
    Good luck

  • Satellite Pro A300 standby and hibernate functions not working properly

    I have a new satellite Pro A300 PSAJ1E - 01E00VIT, and I'm finding this problem:
Sometimes, (not always: may be it depends on which program is running) when trying to put the computer in stand-by or in hibernate mode, it doesn't stop, but only shuts down the monitor (panel), while the fan goes on running and the power light is green. Obviously, lots of battery energy consumption!
Then there is no other way of resuming than shutting down the computer by holding down the power button long time... but this is not correct!
NB: my computer is always connected to a lan, and generally there are some browser windows open when I put it in stand-by mode.
    How can I fix this?
    jomurray

Generally you are right but the point is that you have said that this issue doesnt happen always but sometimes.
    > Sometimes, (not always: may be it depends on which program is running) when trying to put the computer in stand-by or in hibernate mode, it doesn't stop
Fact is that some single applications which are running can prevent the execution of standby mode or hibernation mode.
Therefore if you are running such programs you will have to close it firstly.
I dont say that this must be done with all applications. ;)

  • Satellite Pro A300-1H2 - Windows does not recognise HDD

    Hi,
i'm a newbie, this has probably bin asked before so if it has you'l have to excuse me, i have a satellite pro A300-1h2.
I got the blue screen unmountable boot volume, so have tried to fit a new samsung drive. I put in my windows disc it loads all the drivers then says there is no hard disc?
In bios it recognises it ???
    Thanks if anyone can help

    Hi
The problem is that your notebook supports the HDD SATA controller but the OS system does not contain the SATA drivers
You could set in BIOS the SATA mode to compatible.
This will allows you to install the OS without the installation of SATA drivers.

1.It has been observed that when shutdown command is given, sometimes the laptop goes to restart mode and logon screen appears after restart.
    2. When the sleep mode command is given, sometimes it does not go to sleep mode but rather goes to logoff mode and logon screen appears.
Why the laptop is not properly executing the commands related to sleep, shutdown and restart.
I have not changed any settings of the power buttons.

    Hello
Has your notebook factory settings or you have installed own operating system?
How you give these commands especially command for sleep mode?
In front of me I have Satellite Pro A300 with original preinstalled Vista. Everything works well.
Using FN+F3 notebook switch in sleep mode.
Using FN+F4 notebook switch into hibernation mode.
I have tested options for power button and closing lid too. No problems at all.

  • Satellite Pro A300 can not find USB devices

    Hello forum,
we have a costumer who has bought a Toshiba Satelite Pro A300 from us, but he gets a strange error on it.
he connects a Sandberg USB 2.0 5port Hub to one of the usb ports, the pc finds the hub, but when he connects a memory stick to the hub nothing happens.
the hub and memory stick works on others pc's.
    hope somebody can help.
    best regards

    Hi
What happens if you connect the memory stick directly without this USB hub?
I had also an USB hub but these hubs are a little bit complicated and tricky The USB specifications allows a certain power and depending on the devices that you connect you have to use an active USB hub, that means with external power supply.
But normally Satellite Pro A300 should have enough USB ports If its necessary I would recommend an USB hub with 2 or 3 ports maximum

  • Re: Satellite Pro A300-1EA - Difficulties in BIOS update

    Hi there,
I attempted to update BIOS on my new Satellite Pro A300-1EA (PSAG9E-001001EN) as prompted by Tempro, from version 1.50 to 1.90. The system froze completely during BIOS flash, after waiting for 1 hr, I decided to turn off the power and pray for the best. Thank heavens, everything still works, but the BIOS is still v1.50, not been updated. I have now read so many posts on the forum regarding blotched BIOS update and am now very cautious regarding undergoing any BIOS updates at all.
My questions are: Are there any issues regarding this particular update and/or with the InsydeFlash facility? Are BIOS updates all generally so tricky that they best be avoided? What are the alternative ways to update BIOS, hopefully less dangerous? Also, could there be any potential damage to my laptop related to this miscarried BIOS flash that I should be aware of?
    Many thanks indeed!
    Monsteress

You can feel you lucky, buddy! :)
Im surprised that your ROM module is not damaged or something else. In most cases this happens if the computer freezes during the update.
Let me give you a word of advice. You should only update the BIOS if its necessary or you have problems/issues with the notebook. You can ignore the messages from TEMPRO if your system runs properly. For example I never update the BIOS if my notebook runs perfect Never touch a running system ;)
Otherwise follow the tips posted by Akuma Before you update the BIOS close all running programs, disable AntiVirus and Firewall and connect the AC/DC adaptor.
On my Satellite U400 I have updated the BIOS without problems.

  • Satellite Pro A300-28V - My bluescreens disappeared when BIOS was upgraded

I am curious about this. The machine is an Satellite Pro A300-28V with Vista32/Win7.
Had problems with bluescreen dumps referring to "iaStor.sys". I was just about to send the laptop in for repair when I made this last effort to solve the problem. Upgraded BIOS from 1.9 to 2.1-Win.
Suddenly my system image succeeded!! Even to an Iomega home network HDD. No hang-ups!
No bluescreen dumps even at "cold" start-up (after a night off)!
At the moment I let the computer home in sleeping mode while I am at work. Let's see if it managed a day without dumps.
What is the technical difference between BIOS 1.9 and 2.1? Any idea if it has anything with iaStor.sys to do?

    Hi mate
This is really good news that your BSOD displeasured after BIOS update.
The BIOS give instructions to power-on self test (POST) and provide basic information about how to handle some notebook components, like HDD, ODD, memory which are needed to load the operating system.
Who knows, what has been changed in the update but the main thing is that everything work and the update solve your BSOD
    >Any idea if it has anything with iaStor.sys to do?
iaStor.sys is a part of the SATA driver which is need for recognizing the HDD using the AHCI mode.
