Save as EPS - Include Vector Data - Printing problems

Hey everyone
I'm having an issue with PDFs that I send to a specific newspaper and only them. The problem only occurs in the vector data that is saved in the EPS to be distilled.
Here's an overview of my workflow
*Build ad in Photoshop CS3
*Save EPS with Preview:Macintosh(8Bits);Encoding: ASCII85; Include Vector Data; all other options not checked
*Distill EPS to Press Quality PDF
*Send to newspaper
The problem looks like their RIP is choking on the vector data (primarily text) in the ad. It appears to start to print the text and then just stops or prints a bunch of garbage where the text should be.
I have their in-house Distiller settings and use those now instead of Press Quality. This should rule out any problems with the Distiller settings.
I send dozens of PDFs a week to multiple publications and only have trouble with this one. Is it possible that the "Preview" and/or "Encoding" in the EPS is the problem? Any suggestions what the bare bones settings should be for "Preview" and "Encoding" for the EPS? I want to keep the Vector Data b/c the outputted text remains crisp.
Thanks!

I agree with Mike.
A lot of newspapers are not making a lot of profit and, as a result, may not have up-to-date RIPs. This is demonstrated by your statement that this is the only publication you have problems with.
If your only concern is file size, know that either way, you're dealing with small files. Try the direct-from-Photoshop route with the paper and see what happens. Get the production guru at the paper to work with you on solving the problem.
Also, what happens if you Distill the file as an industry-standard PDF/X-1a file. If you see that the file is compliant, you shouldn't have a problem.

  • Need help trying to "include Vector Data" when saving as an EPS? Anyone?

    Although I have done this many times before, I cannot seem to figure out why the check box "include vector data" is greyed out.  I am working in CMYK - I have placed my corporate logo as a smart object as usual - and none of my layers have effects applied.  Scratching my head right now.  This is a large format poster so I will definately need to resolve this somehow.  Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

    You have to have a layer with a vector mask applied to it for the feature to show up.
    Or live text or a clipping path.
    Copy the logo from Illustrator to Photoshop. When asked, say you want a Shape Layer (I forget the exact wording). If the logo must be more than one colour, duplicate the layer for each additional colour and, on each layer, delete all path segments that are not needed for that particular colour. Group the layers in a folder for easy moving and scaling.
    And why are you using EPS format? Is there a reason you aren't using the far superior in every way Photoshop PDF format?

  • Simple vector transparency - printing problems

    Morning everybody,
    I'm having problems printing a PDF which has been generated from Indesign CS3.  The problem also arises when printing directly from Indesign.  Everything appears OK when on screen.
    I have a background colour, in front of which i have placed an Illustrator CS3 file which is a row of white squares with gaps (transparent) between then.  The squares are white, but I really want them to fade from a hue of the background colour to fully transparent.  To achieve this I have used a gradient feather, going from opacity 50% to opacity 0%.  [See sceenshot]
    My problem is that all the squares show up when I print the file, even the ones which should have an opacity level of 0%.  On the printout the gradient feather is visible (i.e. the squares 'fade out'), but they do not compeltely fade out to fully transparent.
    Does anyone have any tips?
    Thanks very much for any help with this.
    Robin

    Thanks a lot for your reply.
    I don't have a brilliant understanding of colour, but I believe that all the colours in the document are process [see screenshot].
    Turning on overprint preview doesn't change the appearance of the document.  Nor does turning on simulate overprint in acrobat.  In both cases, the appearance of the document on screen is how i want it to print.

  • Photoshop EPS not saving vector data?

    I have a Photoshop CS3 file with 2 layers that use vector masks. I saved the file as an .eps and checked "Include Vector Data." I placed the .eps in an InDesign document. On screen everything looks fine, but if I print to PDF the vector mask layers are missing; likewise if I open/rasterize the .eps file in Photoshop the vector mask layers are gone. It prints fine if I place the original .psd file in the InDesign doc. Any ideas why .eps doesn't appear to save the vector data? Thanks...

    I understand that eps doesn't support layers, and that vector data will be rasterized if I open the eps in photoshop. That's not the issue; the issue is the vector layer data is being *discarded* and is not making it through the workflow: eps placed into an InDesign document and distilled to PDF.
    Update: I merged all layers in the psd file except for 1 vector layer & saved as an eps. When I reopened the eps in photoshop, it tells me it's rasterizing eps data, but when the file opens the imagery from the vector layer is missing. Likewise, if I place the eps in InDesign and distill a pdf, the imagery from the vector layer is missing, even though it appears in the onscreen preview in InDesign. Maybe something is screwy with that mask?

  • Quark / PDF Printing Problems (Save as PDF in OS X)

    I upgraded from Quark 4.1 to 6.5 about a year ago, and ever since then the files I create and print don't look as good. The primary issue seems to be color -- colors don't come out as deep, there seems to be less color saturation, sometimes colors are just pretty far off. I'm working in Mac OS 10.4.8.
    For many years my method has been to design documents and output as PDFs to be professionally printed. These days my PDFs don't print as well. I suspect that the problem has to do with the process of creating the PDF. In Quark 6.5 I create PDFs by selecting "Save as PDF" from Quark's Print menu. Back when I was using 4.1, since Quark didn't have a built-in PDF-creator, I would go into the Chooser, select AdobePS as my printer, and then just choose Print in Quark and it would "print" to a PDF.
    One other problem I've had since the upgrade is that the PDFs Quark creates are HUGE files -- tens or hundreds of megs -- often too large to email. When I used to create PDFs from the identical Quark files using 4.1, the resulting PDFs printed much better and were much smaller files (often far less than 1 meg). Solving the color problem is a higher priority for me than solving the file size issue, though.
    I've spent a lot of time trying to troubleshoot this with our local printer here in Albany, NY (the same guy who printed my stuff in the old days, when it came out looking a lot better). Things we've tried that haven't seemed to solve the problem:
    - Increasing the LPI to 300
    - Checking the box for Full Resolution Tiff Output
    - Experimenting with OPI active and not
    - Experimenting with different PDF options like "Save as PDF," "Compress PDF," "PDF-X," etc. (Compress PDF does result in smaller PDFs, but the quality of the resulting prints is even worse)
    Also, if anyone has suggestions about Quark-specific forums I could post this to, let me know. I tried creating an account on the discussion forms on Quark's website, but I don't receive their confirmation email to confirm my account.
    Any advice greatly appreciated -- thanks so much!

    Marshall,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    colin clarke1’s info is spot on. I will add a bit more. Acrobat Professional includes Distiller in addition to a print driver called Adobe PDF 7.0 (version number matches version of Acrobat). I think the print driver installs automatically, but if not, you should choose to install it and then it will show in your list of printers. This will allow you to make PDFs from Quark XPress much as you did with Quark 4.1.
    Distiller comes with some pre-defined Settings (formerly know as Job Options) for different types of printing, i.e., Smallest file (low-resolution like online viewing), Standard, High Quality, Press Quality and others. These Settings are general standards in the industry in terms amount and type of image compression, font embedding, color management, compatibility with previous Acrobat versions and etc.
    colin clarke1’s method of saving a Quark doc as a PostScript and then distilling it is one method. (You can set this in your Quark Preferences.) Alternatively, you could do the following within Quark XPress…
    (a) Select Print, which brings up the Print window. At the bottom of the window are some buttons. Click on Page Setup and in its window, for Format for: select the Adobe PDF 7/8, the appropriate Paper size and then OK.
    (b) Returning to the Quark print window, make all the necessary choices for Layout, Setup, Output, Options, Layers, Bleed, OPI and Profiles.
    (c) Next, click on the button Printer (at the bottom) which brings up a Mac OS print window. Click to the right of Printer and select Adobe PDF 7/8. Next, click and hold on Copies & Pages for a drop-down list of options and select PDF Options. Click on the bar to the right of Adobe PDF Settings and a list of Distiller Settings will pop up and select the one that best fit the type of printing you are doing, e.g., Press Quality. If you want to see the PDF version afterwards, then select Acrobat for After PDF Creation. Click Ok.
    (d) Returning to the Quark print window, click Print button (lower right). A Save window appears for you to name your document and select where you wish to save in on your computer. (If you choose to see the PDF afterwards, then Acobat will launch and the PDF will then appear in Acrobat.)
    You could learn more about the latest version of Acrobat 8.0 (released November 2006) by Adobe’s “tour” at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobatpro/productinfo/features/
    Hope this helps.

  • Hw can I generate XY graphs directly in a vector data format for printing ie pdf

    A further question re. Printing of Graphs
    There are many similar questions but none where the answers are acceptably adiquite or two or three were the link was broken,
    "Developer exchange forums have been moved" and a pointer to the new
    site, unfort it was hard to find or guess the rest of the link.
    So here is my angle on this problem;
    So far I have tried;
    Using property node: "App.  Printing.Default Printer" to select the printer to use, then
    Using Report Functions to print controls;
    New Report, to generate a new report reference
    Set Report Orientation
    Set Report Margins
    Set Report Font
    Set Report Header Text
    Set Report Font
    Set Report Footer Text
    loop for each page
    Set Report Footer Text,     With page number
    Append Control Image to Report,      several times
    New Report Page
    Until the end of the last page
    Print Report
    Dispose Report
    Initially using existing XY-Graph controls from the front panel.  These
    are on a page of a Tab control to hide these controls while not in use
    and allow them to be hidden while generating the printout.
    Unfortunately when this page is hidden any graph scales set to
    autoscale don't, (normally don't need to and would otherwise be a waste
    of processor time), resulting in graph plots going off scale or
    becoming a line along the axis.
    An issue is that what is printed appears to be read from the screen, so resolution is much
    lower than required for for printing, resulting in rather pixellated
    printed versions. These prints will usually be emailed, so tried the
    pdf995 "printer driver" but the resulting pdf file size is rather large.
     Currently trying Plot-XY on a much larger picture so as to get
    adequate resolution for printing, however suspect this will result in
    much larger pdf files and probably cause other problems.
    The preferred solution in this case will probably be to generate print
    output, instead of based on raster images (ie jpg or png), but on a
    vector format, maybe via postscript or directly in pdf format.
    Similar graphs currently printed from Excel via pdf995
    (or OpenOffice) result in files around 20 kb per page. these can be printed at any size
    (at least upto 64 times) without becoming pixellated, so assume these
    are vector based.
    Currently a page with 4 XY Graph controls uses around 40 to 45 kb per
    page but resolution is poor and overcoming that may push file size up
    to 150 to 200 kb per page, and the whole job can be 50 to 100 pages.
    Are there any functions to generate XY graphs directly in a vector data format preferably in pdf or via PostScript format.
    Cheers
    Darryl

    Hi Darryl,
    I was able to reproduce the issue you were seeing, in which a report generation was taking up a large amount of space per page in a PDF utility. I found; however, using my attached VI (notice that it is set to *.png) and the CutePDF utility (free download at http://www.cutepdf.com/) I was able to get a per page size of about 10 KB. Also using the png I found that the image quality seemed to be quite high.
    Please try incorporating this solution into your application and see if it reduces your file sizes.
    Thanks and have a good evening!

    I stored data into vector collection through the GUI. My problem is, where should I put the FileOutputStream and ObjectInputStream in the steps below before the data that I stored in the Vector can be save in a disk and also to be loaded back to the vector when I restart program automatically. 6044956859 dog Spears Brittany 0.0 [0]
    how do I write my tokenizer so I can get the vector and save it into a
    vector....
    for now.. I have something like this...
    public Customer(String allData)throws NotFoundException{
      rentals = new Vector(5);
      StringTokenizer tokenizer = new StringTokenizer(allData);
      String token;
      if(tokenizer.hasMoreTokens()){
       phone = tokenizer.nextToken();
       password = tokenizer.nextToken();
       lastName = tokenizer.nextToken();
       firstName = tokenizer.nextToken();
       token = tokenizer.nextToken();
       balance = Double.parseDouble(token);
       token = tokenizer.nextToken();
       numVideos = Integer.parseInt(token);
       if(tokenizer.hasMoreTokens()){
        inputString = tokenizer.nextToken();
        temp = Integer.parseInt(inputString);
        rentals.addElement(new Integer(temp));

    You can pass StringTokenizer the characters to use during tokenization. You can include left and right square brackets in that list. Also you can make StringTokenizer send the separators back as part of the token list, if that helps your parsing.
    Or, you could use the same tokenizer, so that the final tokens could look like "[0]". Then you could use a second tokenizer to tokenize that token.

  • Printing problem linked to EXIF time data for JPEG images.

    For some years I have been using Photoshop Elements 8.0 with no problems of any kind. My computer runs on XP Professional with a system comfortably in excess of the minimum requirements to run Elements 8.0. I load my images into Elements from a card reader which is the same one since I got this version of Elements. I shoot mostly in JPEG with a Nikon D300. I print to one of 2 Epson printers, an SX100 and a PX700W. I don't use the wireless feature of the PX700W, connecting it via USB.
    About a year ago I suddenly began to experience printing problems. If I tried to print an image Elements crashed just at the point where printing would begin. By trial & error I discovered that if I adjusted the time in the EXIF data of the image in Elements, whether by advancing or retarding it by hours or days and then adjusted it back to the original time I had no problems printing that image thereafter.
    I also discoveredc that where I had shot in RAW I could print direct from the RAW image in Elements or from the JPEG I saved from an edited in RAW and had no problems.
    I saw the forum discussions about the issues about the date/time in EXIF having been changed following the import into Elements. For those images I still had on my memory cards I checked the EXIF data in Elements and compared it what was on the image on the card. They were the same. I also checked the time zone and time settings of the camera and they were correct.
    I backed up my catalog, re-formatted the computer to bring it back to its ex-factoy status, re-installed Elements and restored my catalog. I imported new images, tried to print them and the problem was still there.
    Before I might upgrade to Photoshop Elements 10 I'm hoping someone else may tell me they have had the same problem and, hopefully, be able to tell me how they fixed it. I know the workaround will bypass the problem but it really annoys me that it suddenly appeared and I seem to be stuck with it. I'm also concerned that, given I totally re-formatted my computer but the problem  is still with me, that the problem may be imbedded in my catalog and simply gets backed up to,\and restored from,  my backup.
    I'd be grateful for any ideas.

    Hi Miceal,
    Though I'm not sure, but see if Catalog repair and optimize helps resolve the issue.
    For doing this, click File >> Catalog and selec your catalog and then click "repair' button.
    Tick the checkbox for rebuilding indices in the repair workflow.
    Now perform the optimize operation on the catalog similarly.
    Let me know if that helps.
    Thanks

  • Javascript to create vector from image and save as eps

    Hi,
    I started writing a script which open all images in a folder and i need to turn those into vectors.
    How do i write the following in JavaScript:
    Open the JPG file
    Select the image layer/object
    Create a vector from the image using the Image Trace for high fidelity
    Reduce the new vector objec size by %50.
    save as eps
    any help with any of the stages would be very helpful.
    thank you

    PERFECT!!!!!!
    This is exactly what I was going to build.  No need to create when it is already done.

  • Printing Problems with Elements 8.0 and EXIF time data

    I've been using Premiere Elements 8.0 in Windows XP Professional for a couple of years with no problems. I shoot mostly in JPEG. I've always imported my images using a card reader (the same one). About a year ago suddenly I ran into printing issues. When I imported my images and tried to print them Elements crashed just at the point where it should begin the actual printing.  By chance I discovered that if I adjusted the time EXIF on the images in Elements by either hours or days, back or forward and adjusted them back to the original time/date the problem disappeared. If I had shot in RAW and edited these images there were no problems with the resultant JPEG.
    I noted the discussions about Elements changing the time in the EXIF and checked for this but this hadn't happened. The EXIF in camera and in Elements were the same. I also checked this against the time settigs of the camera and they were the same. I shoot with a Nikon D300.
    I backed up my images and did a complete re-format of my computer so that it was back to its ex-factory settings, re-installed Elements, restored my catalog from the backup and the problem still arose. I'm reluctant to upgrade to Elements 10 until I (hopefully) I find out  if (a) anyone else has the same problem; and (b) if anyone who had it has fixed it.
    Any ideas would be very welcome.

    Miceal,
    I am confused. Do you mean Photoshop Elements? Premiere Elements does not have a Print function. On can Export/Share, but not Print. For Photoshop Elements, you will want the PSE Forum.
    Good luck,

  • Try to save .ai file as EPS it says "Can't save the illustration. Can't print the illu

    Windows 8. Adobe Illustrator CS6
    I create an illustration and saved it as an .ai file.  Now that I'm ready, I want to save it as an EPS file, but a window pops up saying "Can't save the illustration. Can't print the illustration." I tried saving it under older formats, doesn't work.  Help!

    I don't think it is a Win8 issue per se. I export to EPS from both CS5.1 and CS6 on Windows 8 64-bit. It may well be a user account issue or the CS6 installation itself.
    Try creating a new user account on the Win 8 computer and try it. Only takes a few minutes with the reboot.

    I have completely no idea what you mean by rubber banding. But you shouldn't be creating a BufferedImage and parsing a file inside of a gui component's paint function.
    one more thing if i used affinetransform it is simply zooming completely distorting my map defeating entire purpose.AffineTransform is a transformation from one 2D coordinate system to another. It probably wont be as useful in a 3D environment such as your vector data file.

  • Access vector data from AI or EPS

    Hi!
    Does anyone know if we can access vector data from AI or EPS files, to be used with an effect plugin? Shachar may be?
    I've looked at Streams and DynamicStreams, but couldn't find anything...
    Thanx,

    again, i find myself the bearer of bad news...
    AE deson't offer any in-depth access of the format parsers. you can only ask AE to fetch you a rendered image via it's parsers. (i.e. IO and FBIO plug-ins)
    but since you can find the path to the origin file using AE's suites, you can parse it yourself. (NOT going to be easy)
    from what i gathered, Ghostscript is the API to go with.

    has been discussed here:

    it's just one of these days where i'm not too helpful... :-(
