  • Saving Address Book References to a File

In my app, I have built a speed dial-like view very similar to the Phone.app's Favorites list. The user can add new contacts and select which number to call, but I am having issues storing the info to a file so that it can be reloaded after the app is relaunched.
Right now, I have created a wrapper class that stores the ABRecord's unique ID as well as the phone number's ID, but it won't archive to a file. Any thoughts? Should I just use a NSMutableArray with an NSMutableDictionary storing these values instead of the wrapper class?

You should get the ABRecordID of the contact and store that:
    ABRecordID personID = ABRecordGetRecordID(person);
When needed use the AddressBook api to retrieve the actual record:
    ABAddressBookRef addressBook = ABAddressBookCreate();
    ABRecordRef abPerson = ABAddressBookGetPersonWithRecordID(addressBook, abPersonID);

  • Is it possible to have two different address books on one user account ?

I currently have my address book on my mac however I would like to IMPORT an address book that I saved from our family reunion which was stored on someone else's macbook. I would like to keep this new address book separate from my own on my mac. Every time I try to Import the saved Address book, i get a message that says that if I import the new address book it will replace the old one...which is not what I want to do. Also, I do not wish to create another user account just to assign an address book to it.

You can install additional language packs if you want to run the same Firefox version in different languages like I wrote above.<br />
Select the one(s) that you want to install and click them on the XPI site to trigger the installation.

The Locale Switcher extension allows to switch the language.

  • ADDRESS BOOK ENTRIES WILL NOT LET ME DELETE

    This is nuts.
All I want to do is delete a "group" I created of addresses. I delete the group on my desktop machine, and turn my head for a minute. When I come back, BOOM, there it is again.
I want to clean up my addresses and get rid of the group and trim out about 100 contacts. But whatever I do, they just will not let me delete.
I have a feeling this has something to do with mobile.me and iSync. I have a DT a LT and an iPhone all synching contacts and calendars.
I have tried turning off MM and deleting the calendars then reimporting the (trimmed version) back in. I have tried loggin in / logging out on all machines. I have tried and tried but no matter what I do the stupid (bigger) address book (with) unwanted group just keeps coming back.
    AHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
Can someone just tell me WTH I have to do to make it go away, start from scratch with a nice, cleaned up list and go from there?????
    TIA,
    SAS

    Uh. Well. Wait.
    Uh.
It just did it again. Without MobileMe.
I deleted all the addresses. Turned off iSync.
Imported a "culled" saved address book file.
Then (all I did) was add in a new address. Hit save. Turned my head for a second and when I turned back it WAS BACK. (THE OLD LARGER/BLOATED address book just popped up!!!) Out of nowhere!!!!!
OMG. HTH do you get the thing to go away????? Certainly there must be a way to just delete a database for good????? NO?

  • Changes not being saved in Address Book

    Hi,
I've been editing one of the entries in my Address Book (deleting the surname input), but every time I do this and go out of Address Book the surname comes back. Not a massive problem, but it's very annoying especially as it all links in to Mail etc.
If anyone knows why this is and how it can be fixed it would be much appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

I just encountered the same thing while setting up a couple new Macs with 10.6.8, it's very frustrating, but I found the solution, at least in my case. Maybe this is the same problem you are encountering:
I imported a whole bunch of contacts from another Mac to the first one (using a batch vCard). Anyway, I noticed a few of them were out of date so I edited them. Then I saved them (using both the export vCard group and the Address Book archive), then I took that file to the second Mac I was setting up, and imported them. but I noticed that most (but not all) of the changes I'd just made (prior to exporting) were not saved. This was quite a puzzler, and took a little while to figure out why some changes were being saved and not others.
I believe this problem is due to a interface design flaw in Address Book.
You see, when you press the "Edit" button to unlock a contact record, the "edit" button turns blue (signifying that the record is editable). But what's not clear is that none of the changes are actually committed until you press the exact same "Edit" button again to commit all the changes you've made (on that record and any others edited since the "Edit" button was last clicked).
So, really, what's missing here is a warning dialog. When you select an Export option, and the "edit" button is still blue, a dialog should appear saying that "recent changes are unsaved and will be lost" (or something to that effect). In my opinion, the edit button should probably turn into a "Save Changes" button or something like that.
This is especially confusing, because the uncommitted changes are persistently visible in the Address Book even after switching contacts. In most databases, uncomitted changes are lost as soon as you leave a record without saving, but not in Address Book. It looks like all your changes have been made even though they aren't. And I think it's fair to say that the typical user will assume that when you export the address book contacts, the export will appear identical to how it appeared when they saved it, but if the "Edit" button was blue during the save, that will not be the case, and there is no warning to that effect. So it leads to unexpected behavior in that some recent changes are saved but the most recent are not.
Anyway, I'm sure there'll be other opinions as to the interface design, but it's clear to me this is the problem, and the solution is to always make sure the "edit" button is NOT blue before saving or exporting the address book or contacts.
I also wouldn't have noticed it unless I was trying to set up two computers at once (since the changes were so minor, I might have not ever noticed they weren't saved otherwise). So I wouldn't be surprised if this problem has been around for a long time and I never noticed it before.
    Hope that helps...

  • Saving addy's to address book from websites...

Hi all. Wondered if there is a way to save email addresses from a website. As it is now, when it shows the email address, if you click on it, it automatically emails that person. Was trying instead to save that email address to my address book, so that I could send out a blind copy later to everyone saved.
    Thanks for any pointers!

you can do it in two steps. click on the email and as you say it will open a Mail message to that address. control-click on the email address in the "to" field and select "add to address book". you can also make an automator service that will be available in the right-click menu in safari when you right-click on an email and add the email to address book directly. but that will be less precise because you'll need to be very careful how you select the address. so it's probably better to use the first option.

  • Saved contact from Messaging app but now showing in address book?

I got an sms message from a new number so i saved it from there to my address book on the iPhone 3GS. I'm slightly confused now as I have the contact named in my messaging app but the contact is now showing up in the address book? Can someone explain to me why this is the case?? Thanks

I'm slightly confused now as I have the contact named in my messaging app but the contact is now showing up in the address book?
Based on this, I'm not sure what the problem is or what you are asking.

  • Address Book automatically saving contacts

Address Book (Leopard) is automatically saving the e-mail addresses from any message I reply to. In Tiger, these addresses would show up in "Previous Recipients", but in Leopard they actually get cards in my Address Book. I don't want addresses to be automatically saved into Address Book, but so far haven't found how to turn that off. Am I missing something obvious?

The only thing I can think of is that you might have a Mail rule or automator action that is causing this.

  • Using O2M I imported my contacts into Address Book. However upon exiting the contacts are not saved. This is on a new Macbook Pro Lion OS. How does one save the newly imported contacts?

Using the program O2M I successfully imported emails from Outlook 2003 to Mail, and calendar events to iCal. However, repeated attempts to import contacts to Address Book have failed. The contacts appear to import, but when I close Address Book and reopen it, the contacts are gone. I tried File-Save, but Save is greyed out. This is a new Macbook Pro with the latest Lion OS. I wonder if O2M has not been updated to work with Lion. Or is there something I am overlooking in the import process?

Hi Denisej and others who have encountered the same problem,
I tried your work around. Unfortunately it did not work out for me because in my contacts there are an unknown number that still "refused" to be imported like that. When such a contact was in the group I selected for import the whole lot would be lost again after re-opening Address Book. Finally that meant that I had to import each contact one-by-one, each time with the need to close down Address Book. A job to go nuts and end up with a mouse injury. So I decided to use the Migration Assistant that Lion now offers
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3284404
together with Windows Migration Assitant on my old PC. Obviously both Mac and PC have to be on the same network. For this I did not need to do anything special. Both make use of the same router and that is apparently sufficient. When migrating the contacts Lion creates a new account, so you need to log in to that new account to see your migrated contacts. I used the Export Address Book Archive function in the Address Book menu to copy the lot to my own Apple account. I got rid of the new account and I was finally where I wanted to be in the first place.

  • Saving contacts to address book - Multiple Users

My wife and I both have iPhones and want to back up our contacts. I backed mine up but noticed in Windows Address Book it just put all of my contacts in the Main Identity's Contacts. I'm afraid of backing up my wife's because I'm afraid it will mix up all of our contacts. I've tried creating groups for each of us but it just puts everyone's contacts in the main identity's contacts. Is there a way to back them up with Windows Address Book without mixing them up?

I will have the same issue shortly. One thing that you can try to do (which I have yet to try...so unsure how it will work) is have your contacts sync to outlook while have hers sync to windows address book. This way they won't get mixed up
Also, I have a related question whose answer may help: does itunes back up contacts automatically (i.e. in the background), without the help of an external application like outlook or windows address book? if so, then backing up to a program may be unnecessary.

  • How do I import an Outlook Express address book, saved to a memory stick from another PC?

I'm migrating everything from an old Windows XP machine on to a Windows 7 PC, and can't use my original email client, Outlook Express. But I need to import the OE address book from the XP PC to Thunderbird on the Win 7 PC. Any ideas?

Click the Start button, type contacts, then open the Contacts Program, then click the Import button, then select Windows Address Book file (.wab), and select your OE address book. Next, click the Export button and select Comma separated (csv) format. Once you have the csv file, it's worth opening it in a spreadsheet program or csv editor and arranging the columns to match the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Import_address_list_from_text_file TB address book layout]. Finally, in TB select Tools/Import...Address books...Text file...select the csv file, and verify the input fields match the TB fields.

  • Contact Photos in Address Book Not Saving

    Hello,
I am suddenly unable to save a photo to a contact in Address Book.
I have run into a similar problem before, when Address Book stopped accepting changes to contacts altogether. I followed advice I saw on the web and deleted the .plist files for Address Book in the Preferences file in my Library. That worked like a charm. Now, that doesn't work.
I have deleted the files, restarted my computer, verified and fixed permissions using Disk Utility, and let my computer rest overnight by leaving it off. Nothing works and I've tried several combinations of order.
I am running Mac OSX 10.6.8 on a first generation Intel MacBook Pro. All software is up to date.
Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Mail: Where are email messages and address book saved?

    Good morning.
I would like to backup both emails and the address book in Mail.
Where are these located on my harddrive?
    Thanks for your time.

    Hi Again Bruce,
    On Mail...
First Quit Mail, then I'd backup these two Mail folders, by right clicking on them in the Finder, then choose Archive/Compress.
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail Downloads
(Could be a different folder here if you chose such in Mail Prefs)
Right click on that Mail folder, choose archive, you'll get everything in the folder, and the folder itself in a file called Mail.zip, move it to a safe place, same for the Mail Downloads folder... only the plist is separate.
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
    For Address Book, quit AB...
    Files...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.AddressBook.abd.plist
    Folders...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/com.apple.AddressBook/
