Saving File Info

I recently installed Photoshop CS5. In CS3 I could save the metadata/file info so I wouldn't have to re-type it each time. But I can't find that option in CS 5. AM I missing something?

  • File Info not saved (.gif) (Ps CS6 Extended, Mac)

    I'm not certain that I've been building my workflow properly before, so if this was not supposed to be supported, I'm open to that possibility:
    Modifying the "file info" for a gif file (in my case, "General" tab, "Document Title" and "Description") doesn't actually get saved with the file - or, at least, if it is saved, it's not visible when re-opening the file.
    I believe that I understood that metadata for .png format isn't supported, but I thought that .gif was.
    (Test case is easy: open .gif file, add a Title and Description, save, and re-open - information is gone).
    Thanks for any help anyone has...

    hi Chris & thank you for your response
    it doesn't seem possible to add File > Info to a .png image in Photoshop itself. i've tried it a few different ways.
    (shoot, actually i should try adding it again in Ps to a .png file and then see if Bridge can read it. hmmmm??)
    in an other thread: [ http://forums.adobe.com/message/5642141#5642141 ] Gene told me that i could select Copyright and Contact Info from the Metadata drop down menu in the Save for Web panel to add the info to a .png image but this didn't work.
    i don't know if Ps is having one of its "fits" or what but nothing seems to be working.
    after a bit Gene was able to tell me that i can add File Info to .png files in the Bridge Cs6 or CC (no idea what the difference is between Ps Cs6 and Ps CC) and so i tried that and it worked.
    however, it appears that Ps still cannot read the data/info when the .png image is opened in Ps itself. Only readable in Bridge.
    which brings me to an other Q ... what's the point of Copyright info that can't be read? i am not being sarcastic i just really don't understand. granted, i need to read up on this topic but was hoping you could share your thoughts/knowledge w/me   oh, and if you have any handy links i would also much appreciate it. thanx 4 ur help!!

  • File Info not saving in PS

    Upon entering File Info and saving the image in Photoshop, all metadata disappears. However, If I apply a metadata template in Bridge, the metadata stays. What may be causing the File Info to not save with the image in PS?
    Usig Bridge would be okay, however, I want to create layered images and keep all the metadata. If I attempt to do so in PS, the metadata for all image layers disappear.

    PNG file format does not support layers. Even Layer document that support layers may well not have meta data for all images used within a composite. Composites images made using Photoshop place to place in image files as smart object layers may have meta data for placed in image files in the smart object layer's embedded object but that metadata would not be available for use within Photoshop. You would need to open the embedded object in the appropriate application or plug-in to get at that metadata. In fact a composite image file with image file meta data is most likely for the meta data of base image used when the composite image files was created.

  • Script to require user to update comments in info window when saving file?

    I work in a print production department where many different people are modifying files (InDesign, photoshop, Illustrator, etc.) on a central network every day. Users copy the file they want to work on to their desktop, modify it, and then replace the original on the network with the modified version.
    It can happen, though, that either someone doesn't save their work back to the network--or the opposite, where someone inadvertently overwrites a file on the network with a version that isn't as recent. Unfortunately, the information window (the one that you can access by right-clicking a file or, in the Finder column view, clicking on the "Get Info" button) doesn't identify the most recent user of a file--just the date created, modified, last opened, etc. When files on the server are incorrect for whatever reason, it can be difficult to figure out what happened. This info can be entered manually in the "Comments" field, but users either forget or are too busy to add that step into their routine.
    Can a script to written that will prompt/require them to add at least their initials, date last changed, and for what reason, in the comments field before saving? It would be ideal if the script could somehow prompt users to do this only when saving files to the network--or, failing that, at least only prompt them once if they're just saving a file they've already dragged to their desktop back to the desktop for backup reasons.
    Is this possible? Truly, I know almost nothing about AppleScript, but someone here was really, really helpful last week with a file-comparison script that has saved lives already. I'm trying to learn more, but meanwhile, I thought I'd ask.
    Thank you so much in advance!

    I can't see any way of doing this.
    It would require hooks into every application's Save dialog, which just isn't an option.
    The only possible way it might work is a folder action on the network folder that somehow adds the username to the comments field of any file as it's transferred to the server. Not quite the same thing, and I've no idea how folder actions work in a multi-user environment but it might be worth a try.
    The problem may be that every users' system will see the new file getting added, so every system tries to fire off the folder action, with unpredictable results.

  • Custom File Info Panel CS2- CS4

    I have a Custom File Info Panel that has been created in Adobe Photoshop CS2 and works in CS3.  I am having trouble figuring out how to get it to work in CS4.  Is there a way to port the Custom File Info Panel into CS4 without entirely recreating it?
    I am seeing references to FileInfo SDK and creating a new Flex UI but I can't seem to find a definitive method on this pre-CS4 File Info Panel to the new UI - and I am in unfamiliar territory.
    Any assistance or points in the proper direction would be most helpful.
    UPDATE:  Answering at least some of my own questions, I have followed the procedure here:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/gunar/2008/11/customizing_metadata_ui_in_cs4.html
    I am still having some trouble with a couple of the unique properties but I expect that they will be typos... I hope...
    Any good reference information is still welcome.

    Thank you for suggesting the PS Scripting forum but I think the next stop might be the XMP SDK Forum as there are a few similar questions there such as http://forums.adobe.com/thread/540397.  But before I go impolitely cross-posting...
    I've had some success and it appears that my custom file info metadata edited and saved in CS2 is now visible in CS4 and the reverse is also true - metadata edited and saved in CS4 is visible in CS2.  This was built using the Generic Panel from the SDK according to the instructions shown at the link in my original post.
    The only problem is that the external application that relies on the custom metadata doesn't see the CS4 version of the metadata.  I suspect that this is just some general namespace issue.  Perhaps if an XMP expert would be willing to comment on the conversion of the Custom Info Panel based on the following single portion of the metadata to see if I am doing it correctly - I would very much appreciate it.
    In the CS2 Custom Info Panel XML I have this field:
    <panel title="$$$/CustomPanels/XYZ/PanelName=XYZCorp Graphics MetaData" version="1" type="custom_panel">
      group(placement: place_row, spacing: gSpace, horizontal: align_fill, vertical: align_top, reverse: rtl_aware)
      static_text(name: '$$$/CustomPanels/XYZ/fullName=Full Name/Title of Graphic', font: font_big_right, vertical: align_center);
      cat_container_edit_text(xmp_ns_prefix: 'xyzcorp', xmp_namespace: 'xyzcorp', xmp_path: 'FullName', container_type: seq_struct, horizontal: align_fill);
      mru_popup(xmp_ns_prefix: 'twcable', xmp_path: 'FullName', no_check: true, vertical: align_top, container_type: seq_struct, mru_append: true);
      <!-- many more fields -->
    </panel>
    In my CS4 properties.xml the corresponding field:
    <xmp_definitions xmlns:ui="http://ns.adobe.com/xmp/fileinfo/ui/">
    <xmp_schema prefix="custom" namespace="xyzcorp" label="$$$/Custom/Schema/Label=XYZCorp Graphics MetaData" description="$$$/Custom/Schema/Description=CS4 Version of XYZCorp MetaData Custom Panel.">
        <!-- simple properties -->
       <xmp_property name="FullName" category="external" label="$$$/Custom/Property/FullName_Label=Full Name/Title of Graphic:" type="seq" element_type="text"/>
    <!-- many other properties -->
    <ui:separator/>
    </xmp_schema>
    </xmp_definitions>
    It seems that the following CS2 => CS4 translations should be true:
    "xmp_namespace" => xmp_schema namespace property (in this case "xyzcorp")
    "xmp_path" => xmp_property name property (for this one property, "FullName")
    is there another translation that I am missing?  I am betting it has something to do with the CS2 "xmp_ns_prefix" but I am not entirely sure how to map this.  Also perhaps something in manifest.xml (though it didn't seem like it)?
    Many thank you's to anyone that can offer words of wisdom.

  • Photoshop CS2 File Info Templates fill in all pages, not just it's own

    I just purchased an Acer Laptop computer, has an AMD 64x2 Dual Core Processor, 2GB of DDR2 Ram, 160GB hard drive with Windows Vista Home Premium preinstalled. I'm not sure how any of this could be of any help, though.
    I've just installed Photoshop CS2, Neat image noise remover, Nik sharpener, and Huey pro calibrator on it.
    This is to be a second computer to a Dell desktop, that will be used when out of town and we want to work on our images.
    Today we opened Photoshop CS2 and tried to work on some Raw images. We were just going to crop them and fill in the File Info on them then save them to jpeg.
    The cropping went fine. When we tried to enter file info and save the Metadata Templates we had trouble. There are 7 of 12 different pages of info that can be changed, the other 5 can't be, I think. Anyway, we were filling in the Description, IPTC Contact, ITPC Content, IPTC Image and IPTC Status pages. We saved the IPTC Contact page as a Metadata Template.
    The first image went fine, but when we opened other images, and typed in the information it all changed back to the information on the first image we did when the saved Contact template was used. When we saved the IPTC template for the first image it save the information on all of the pages, not just the Contact page. When we realized this, I started playing around with it and whatever template was saved last will give you all the information typed in on all pages that was there when that template was saved. I also checked the Photoshop CS2 installed on the Dell Desk Top and it is working correctly. We have templates for Description, IPTC Contact, and IPTC Image saved on it. These will give you the information on the individual page not all.
    Why would it be doing this on the Laptop and more importantly, how can I fix it?
    I sure hope this makes sense and do apologize for the length of it. Thanks in advance for any help I can get. Linda

    I was having a similar problem - I was saving an SVG from Illustrator, only to find that when I tried to open it or place it back in Illustrator, I got the error "This SVG is Invalid. Validate it before opening."
    You can run the SVG through the W3C validator, remove all the parts causing errors using a simple text editor like Notepad, and then Illustrator should be able to open it. This is a laborious process though if you have a lot of SVGs to save.
    After a discussion with Apple support, I learned that it was actually one of my graphics in the Illustrator file that was causing the issue. I had placed an SVG I received from a co-worker, changed the colors, and was trying to save it as an SVG again, but for some reason I kept getting that error, even when I tried save other icons/layers in the same document. When I deleted the two layers that were corrupt, the Save As SVG worked perfectly, no errors when opening the file.
    I don't know details, but if you are getting this error, try the Flatten Transparency thing like witkacy suggests. If you're still having problems, it may be caused by an SVG you placed in your file. After a little bit of trial and error, you may be able to find the culprit. You may then have to re-create the graphic yourself (like I did). Converting it to outlines or a shape or something may work as well, but I'm not sure.
    Hope this helps someone else!

  • Bridge CS6 - No Right Click to get File Info panel?

    I've recently transitioned from CS4 to CS6 and am very pleased with the many changes that have been made. One Bridge CS4 feature that I utilized on a regular basis was that of accessing File Info by right-clicking on a file or selection of files and then entering file info metadata through the panel that opened, and sometimes automatically uploading that data from a pre-saved XML file.
    Where do I access the File Info panel in Bridge CS6 so that I can adjust metadata properties for the respective file(s)?
    Thanks,
    Buck

    Hi Yammer, thanks for the quick reply.
    I've since tested it on different files and on some files it works, on others it does not.
    It now see that it does work on AI, INDD, PSD, JPG, and PNG, but it doesn't work on GIF... I guess that's a GIF limitation rather than my not knowing how to edit the info in Bridge.
    Thanks for looking into this.

  • Problems with Custom File Info Panel and Dublin Core

    I'm creating a custom file info panel that uses the values of the dublin core description and keywords (subject) for two of it's own fields.  I'm having problems with the panel saving if they enter the description on the custom panel first, and with the keywords not echoing each other, or reappearing after a save.<br /><br />Here is the code for the panel<br /><br /><?xml version="1.0"><br /><!DOCTYPE panel SYSTEM "http://ns.adobe.com/custompanels/1.0"><br /><panel title="$$$/matthew/FBPanelName=Testing for Matthew" version="1" type="custom_panel"><br />     group(placement: place_column, spacing:gSpace, horizontal: align_fill, vertical: align_top)<br />     {<br />          group(placement: place_row, spacing: gSpace, horizontal: align_fill, vertical: align_top)<br />          {<br />               static_text(name: '$$$/matthew/keywords = Keywords', font: font_big_right, vertical: align_center);<br />               edit_text(fbname: '$$$/matthew/keywordsFB = Keywords', locked: false, height: 60, v_scroller: true, horizontal: align_fill, xmp_ns_prefix: 'dc', xmp_namespace: <br />'http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/', xmp_path: 'subject');<br />          }<br />          group(placement: place_row, spacing: gSpace, horizontal: align_fill, vertical: align_top)<br />          {<br />               static_text(name: '$$$/matthew/description = Description', font: font_big_right, vertical: align_center);<br />               edit_text(fbname: '$$$/matthew/descriptionFB = Description', locked: false, height: 60, v_scroller: true, horizontal: align_fill, xmp_ns_prefix: 'dc', xmp_namespace: <br />'http://purl.org/dc/elements/1.1/', xmp_path: 'description');<br />          }<br />          group(placement: place_row, spacing: gSpace, horizontal: align_fill, vertical: align_top)<br />          {<br />               static_text(name: '$$$/matthew/season = Season', font: font_big_right, vertical: align_center);<br />               popup(fbname: '$$$/matthew/seasonFB = Season', items: '$$$/matthew/Season/Items={};option 3{option 3};option 2{option 2};option 1{option 1}', xmp_namespace:'http://monkeys.com/demo/testingmatthew/namespace/', xmp_ns_prefix:'matthew', xmp_path:'season');<br />          }<br />          group(placement: place_row, spacing: gSpace, horizontal: align_fill, vertical: align_top)<br />          {<br />               static_text(name: '$$$/matthew/ltf = Limited Text Field', font: font_big_right, vertical: align_center);<br />               edit_text(fbname: '$$$/matthew/ltf = Limited Text Field', locked: false, horizontal: align_fill, xmp_namespace:'http://monkeys.com/demo/testingmatthew/namespace/ ', <br />xmp_ns_prefix:'matthew', xmp_path:'ltf');<br />          }<br />     }<br /></panel><br /><br />Thanks for the help

    To answer my own question:
    The documentation really sucks.
    I found this reply from Adobe <http://forums.adobe.com/message/2540890#2540890>
    usually we recommend to install custom panels into the "user" location at:
    WINDOWS XP: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Adobe\XMP\Custom File Info Panels\2.0\panels\
    WINDOWS VISTA: C\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\XMP\Custom File Info Panels\2.0\panels\
    MAC OS: /user/username/Application Data/Adobe/XMP/Custom File Info Panels/2.0/panels/
    The reason why your panels did not work properly was a missing Flash trust file for that user location. Without such a trust file the embedded flash player refuses to "play" your custom panel.
    Please see section "Trust files for custom panels" in the XMPFileInfo SDK Programmer's Guide on page 50 for all details on how to create such trust files.
    After many wasted hours I have now the simple panels running.

  • File Info XAP XMP XML

    I'm not having any luck trying to figure out how to store some XML data into an AI file using the SDK. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to accomplish what I am trying to do:<br /><br />My plugin is notified when the file is being saved.<br /><br />At this point, I extract some information, and want it to be stored with the file when it's saved, so it can be extracted later.<br /><br />If you open the AI file in a text editor, you will see that there is a readable XML packet (<x:xmpmeta>) near the top of the file.<br /><br />Using AIXMLDocumentSuite and AIXMLNodeSuite I'm able to save some nodes to the file, however, that information does -not- get stored in the human readable <x:xmpmeta> text packet at the top of the file. This is not good enough for my purposes.<br /><br />I tried using:<br /><br />AIDocumentSuite::GetDocumentXAP<br />Which seems to return exactly the information I'm referring to in the file.. Make modifications, then:<br />AIDocumentSuite::SetDocumentXAP<br /><br />My changes are not saved into the file. I suspect that maybe I write the data with Set, and then immediately afterward, as Illustrator finishes the saving process, it's overwritten.<br /><br />I need to insert my data into the AI structure somehow, so that it is written when the file is saved...<br /><br />This information is available through illustrator if you choose the menu options "File -> File Info" then click on "Advanced" in the list on the left.<br /><br />Does anyone know how I can properly manipulate this "File Info" data? and store custom information? There are no XML related examples in the Illustrator SDK, and very little documentation on how it is supposed to be used.<br /><br />Thanks in advance.

    Ok, I've made some progress on this issue, that being I finally forced my way to getting my data saved into the file.<br /><br />I talked about this a bit in another thread, but I'll reiterate here, hoping that someone else searching for solutions to this problem can know where to start.<br /><br />I did exactly as I suggested above:<br /><br />AIDocumentSuite::GetDocumentXAP<br /><br />Make modifications, then:<br /><br />AIDocumentSuite::SetDocumentXAP <br /><br />It was not easy to avoid the phenomenon I described above however.<br /><br />The modifications you make must comply with some undocumented rules; because if you pass some text in that does not pass the rule, all of your changes are discarded; replaced by whatever was there originally.<br /><br />There is no error reported. There should be an error when calling SetDocumentXAP if you pass in 'invalid' data, or at the very least, the valid data structure (schema) should be defined in the documentation (it's not).<br /><br />What I did was put all of my additions inside a <rdf:Description> tag and put it right after the other ones already in there.<br /><br />Sample:<br /><br />     <rdf:Description rdf:about=""<br />            xmlns:my_tagname="http://www.mycompany.com/1.0/"><br />         <my_tagname:my_metadata rdf:parseType="Resource"><br />            <my_tagname:my_parameter>value</my_tagname:my_parameter><br />            <my_tagname:my_data_1><br />               <rdf:Bag><br />                 <rdf:lirdf:parseType="Resource">                     <br /><my_tagname:my_parameter_2>Value</my_tagname:my_parameter_2><br />                     <my_tagname:my_parameter_3>Value</my_tagname:my_parameter_3><br />                     <my_tagname:my_parameter_4><br />                        <rdf:Seq>                        <br />                        <rdf:li>some data</rdf:li><br />                        <rdf:li>some data</rdf:li><br />                        </rdf:Seq><br />                     </my_tagname:my_parameter_4><br />                  </rdf:li><br />               </rdf:Bag><br />            </my_tagname:my_data_1><br />         </my_tagname:my_metadata><br />      </rdf:Description><br /><br />I hope this helps someone else. • How do I save File Info in an MP3 file using audition 3.0

    Dear Anyone,
    I am worling on a project that is time sensitive. I have been helped on the markers/mp3 scenario.
    Thanks to ryanclark and jay moore.
    So that is done. But I have yet another issue with the MP3 file. Here it is:
    I filled in all the File Info, saved the MP3 file in audition 3.0. Then I burned the CD. When I opened
    the file up from the CD in Windows Media, there was no file information at all in there.
    So, I went back to the drawing board and filled out the File Info and XMP file, still the same thing.
    I can't seem to get any help on the help area of the Audition so here I am.
    Does anyone have the answer to this? I sure would appreciate it.
    thanks.

    See the other thread - the answer, such as it is, is in there now.

  • Cannot copy or paste into  File info in PSE 8

    I have just been upgraded to PSE 8 from
    5. I used to be able to copy, cut and paste  text captions in to the file info box
    when using 5 but that useful function no longer seems to work in

    Am i missing something or has the  quicker right  click cut and past function disappeared?

    Can you check if similar functionality is working in any other application installed on your machine? There has been no change in this and this should work like it was working. Moreover it is OS specific functionalities and not much commanded by application softwares.
    Please let us know your comments. Keyboard shortcut should work along with right click options of cut/copy.....
    Thanks,

  • How Do I remove all File Info after completeing image?

    After completing all work on a Photoshop Image - then saving as a jpeg - all the file info still remains (XMP).  How do I delete it?

    I appreciate your response and your effort to try to help me.  This is all stuff I know nothing about, so please bear with me.  I clicked on a picture I am ready to post on Behance – and chose “Save For Web”.  There is no  option to “Remove Metadata”.
    There is a box entitled “Metadata:” – but choices are  “Copyright” – “Copyright and Contact Info” -  “All Except Camera Info” – “All”.
    Is there any other way I could check to remove all the info I see when I open “File Info”?
    And, what does all that stuff in the Metadata box mean?  I would love to look it up for myself – but have no idea where to go to find info about it.
    Please help and thank you.

  • File size different in LR than in "file info"

    After cropping an image (36MB) and doing some adjustments and then saving as a standard JPEG - high quality - I go back into LR and the new image shows it's 10.2 MB. When I quit LR and do a "get file info" on the same file it tells me that the image is 1.2 MB's. What gives?

    Based only on what is included above, I would guess that the 36MB file was in RAW format which you then converted to a JPEG. Would that be correct? Going from 36MB to 12MB just doing a conversion to JPEG is not all that unusual. If you set up your camera to record both a RAW and a JPEG image for the same photo, you would see this sort of radical size difference because the lossy compression algorithms used in the conversion to JPEG will often just throw out up to 2/3 of your image data. The typical dSLR will record data at 12-bit or 14-bit color and Lightroom internally stores a RAW image at 16-bit color depth. A JPEG uses only an 8-bit color depth so there goes most of your data. Another thing to check is what resolution you used when you did the conversion. By default, the conversion is set up for screen which uses a resolution of 72-ppi. Great for display on the typical monitor but not much else. You will want to use at least 240-ppi for printing and 300-ppi for anything else.
    Finally, unless you are intending to either send the photos to a web server or print them, I would not recommend converting them to JPEG. There is a massive loss of image data that is incurred and then, each time you save the image, it is compressed again and even more image data is lost. After the third compression, your JPEG image is pretty much useless as the quality is so bad. I convert my RAW images to DNG (my personal preference) and they are archived that way. When I am ready to print an image or send it to a web site, I export the image as a JPEG and store it separately, outside of my catalog though I will create a new collection for the image(s) or add them to an existing one so I know the status of the image but I always maintain the original in a RAW format.
