Saving files takes forever

Why does it take so long for illustrator to save a file when InDesign seems so much quicker?

Illustrator can save files very quickly couple things to keep in mind when building fast files for Illustrator
Do a save as and trun off pdf compatible (you do not need this unless you are importing into InDesign). Your saves will now be much quicker as your files will be much smaller.
When placing bitmapped images, check the box to link, embeddeding will make your files larger and slower
Run the action delete unused panel items. This will clean up your unused swatches, symbols, brushes, graphic style. If you have 100s of any of these repeated, see bullet below.
Check the file size of you document, you may have a technical problem if abnormally large. You can search for a post deleted global colors
In comparison I find Illustraror files to be smaller and faster then InDesign when the same content is used. InDesign has a lot of header content. I was working on changing the workflwo for one of the major trade show exhibition companies. Wanted to switch them for InDesign for their work orders, since InDesign has a nice table feature they could have used for charting their signage placement on structures. Unfortunatley found out that InDesign file sizes got too large for 1000s of work ordfers per trade show that would have exhausted the space on their servers. I don't know InDesign as well, and do recognize that it is a better fit for books, catalogs, but would love to hear what others have experienced and if I may have missed something. I actually like working in InDesign or any other program more, because it is something different than my usual, though I do struggle sometimes with cleansing the InDesign pallete with stubborn unused coloros that do not want to delete and getting the over 27 spot colors error.

  • Printing a PDF file takes forever

My HP laser printer is quite fast. But when sending a PDF file to print (open it in Acrobat full version and send to print) -- it takes forever, even if the file is not large at all....
    ????

Do you notice any difference in copy quality? Is Reader sending low res photos, etc?
Open the file in Acrobat Pro and optimize it. Advanced> Print Production> pdf optimizer.
Play with the settings. You may have some embedded photos or scans with much more resolution than you need to get good quality from your printer.

  • Printing PDF Files takes forever

I'm new to the mac world, but love it. It takes forever to print pdf files on my iMac. I'm using an HP3050 Laserjet, plugged directly into the iMac. Never had this problem with the printer connected to my Vista Laptop.
I started to print a 2 page pdf 9 minutes ago and still have not gotten a pageout of the printer. PDF File is only 132 KB.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated

    David Goodman1 wrote:
It was happening with preview and adobe pdf viewer. I tried an experiment, unplugged the usb cable and re-set the printer to its defaults.
That solved part of the problem. It now prints pdf's quickly, but any document, word, pdf etc that I try to print, the printer now beeps and prompts for a manual feed, press enter for confirmation. After pressing the enter button on the printer whatever file I'm trying to print comes out.
Okay, the printer thinks that you're feeding paper from the manual feed slot, not from the paper tray. When you select 'Print', the printer dialog box should come up. There are two basic styles for the printer dialog box:
1 basic, which has seven items in it: the printer ID pull-down menu, which allows you to select printers if you have more than one printer; in my case, I'd have Brother HL-2070N, Brother MFC-440CN, Adobe PDF 8.0, and a few other items on the list. It would also show the printer presets pull-down, the four print system buttons (PDF, Preview, Cancel and Print) and the dialog control triangle.
2 complete, which can be access from the basic dialog by clicking on the dialog control triangle. This will zoom out the dialog box to include the full array of options available for that printer. What options show depend on which printer you have, but one of them will be a pull-down menu which usually has the name of the app you're trying to print from. One of the items on that menu will be 'Print Feed' or something similar. Select that item. The dialog will zoom out and show you the various print feed options. It is probable that there will be a checkmark next to 'manual feed' or something similar. Select 'automatic' or 'tray #1' or similar. Print normally.
Once you have printed something with the correct settings the print system will remember the settings you want and will keep them until you change them. Just remember that if you change them, the system will remember the new settings until you change them back.
Plus, printing #10 envelopes no longer works correctly, the address information only partially prints and is un-readable.
That's almost certainly because it things that it's printing letter-size paper from the manual tray. One of the settings under 'Print Settings' or similar should allow you to select the size and type of paper; if you select #10 envelope, it will adjust accordingly. Note that unless you specify otherwise, if you select #10 envelope the system will usually automatically select the manual feed for you. It will go back to whatever feed setting had been made before printing envelopes once you select a different type of paper. (At least that's how it's worked in every printer I've used for quite some time now.)
I'm going to plug the printer back into my Vista Laptop and see if it goes back to normal.
It's not hardware-related, it's driver-related, so you should be able to print from Vista without a problem.
If you do have a problem, let us know 'cause then the problem is not a driver problem. And if it's not a driver problem you may yet get to buy a new printer, 'cause fixing printer hardware is usually more expensive than just tossing the printer and replacing it. I would charge you at least $50/hour plus parts to fix this kind of thing. You can get a new printer for under $100. You make the call.
Is there any kind of "terminal" command I can use to re-set how the Mac is dealing with the printer?
if you really want to see the guts of the print system, you can go to the CUPS pages on your system, but you really don't want to do that unless you absolutely have no choice. The CUPS pages, the Common UNIX Printing System pages, on your system are available if you launch your web browser (any web browser) and go to <http://127.0.0.1:631/printers>. There's a whole lot of info in there, but playing inside there is not for the faint of heart.

  • Saved files take a long time to appear on Server or Desktop

We have a network of nearly 40 macs, Panther Server, mostly panther clients but the newer machines are on 10.4.
All of the newer machines exhibit the problem in that files saved to the server or to the desktop take a long time to appear.
It appears to be a refresh issue, as on the server other clients can see the file straight away and locally the files can be seen on the desktop via the terminal.
Force quitting the finder forces the files to appear but this is not a solution.
The clients which have the problem all run 10.4 and the Server is 10.3. The 10.3 clients do not exhibit the same issues.

I have also seen this issue at one of my larger clients (50+ workstations).
The issues seems isolated to 10.4.5 or higher. Our workstations with 10.4.2 did not exhibit this problem. It is not an issue with hardware (we have seen this on an iBook G3 and various G5 tower models). Nor does it appear to be server-related: we have seen the issue saving locally with no servers mounted. We have seen the issue when saving from Adobe CS apps, MS Office apps, and from system apps (like TextEdit). Deleting com.apple.finder.plist from the user's home Library and then relaunching the Finder gets relief for a short time but the problem returns soon after. plutil reports the file is OK. The volume directory is fine, the permissions check out, and caches have been purged, to no avail.
Like you, summersault, I am able to see the saved file on the command line, and when my users Force Quit the Finder, the file appears. Other workarounds, like the Nudge contextual menu, do not work.
I have submitted the error via apple.com/feedback and would encourage you to do the same.
    Anxiously awaiting 10.4.7...

  • HD4770 display driver opening image files takes forever

Hi... 4770 / w7 / clean cs5 64 bit user here. my situation :  1 click and photoshop cs5 boots and opens any of my ( large) files  instantly,  with  absolutely NO delay at all.   (8gb  ram) and it does this consistenly.  like BAM! open. AS LONG AS THERE IS no display  driver / ccc installed....
( just the generic driver from windows) the minute i install the corresponding display driver for my  videocard, the same operation (opening files, even small ones) takes  considerably longer.  (slow)
Tried to use the lastest   ATI display drivers alone, problem persisted, ccc same  issue.  12.01 update? same storry.  I dont care for OpenGL acceleration so i  turned that off, no change... so  what should i do?  do you guys think is ok to use  just the generic windows driver  like that? ( says 8mb, real card has 512DDR5...)  I dont do much gaming,  but what about  power / heat?  ( no 2d clocks?) btw, no overheating,  nor stange  virus/ misconfiguration issues. thanks!

    1) did you install the Catalyst 10.7 driver set, current from ATI/AM
no, but tried 10.6 and  10.5.  will try again
    2) did you make sure to do a custom install and avoid installing all the extra crap (like the video game) they try to set up?
yes custom install, just the driver
    3) It's possible that there's something physically wrong with the parts of the card the video driver needs to function.  Do other programs seem to work with the ATI/AMD Catalyst installed?
    no problems whatsoever
    4) Did you actually shut down Photoshop and try starting it again after making that change?
    yes
Make sure and reboot the computer after installing the drivers (even though they don't strictly require it).
    rebooting was necessary

  • WMV files take forever to load in QuickTime 10

I have QuickTIme 10 (118) and on the System Preferences I have Flip4Mac 2.3.8.1 (the latest) and Perian 1.2.2.2 (also the latest)
My problem is, every time I start playing a WMV movie, QuickTime takes ages to load and I can't fast forward. I have a WMV movie that is 1.4GB in size, and QuickTIme takes approximately 45 minutes to load, and during that time there is a progress bar (that goes super slow) that needs to complete before I can fast forward it.
Any other movie files play (and load) instantly, I can just fast forward to any point I want without a blip.
I have uninstalled, and re-installed both of the components and it still doesn't work. I have also tried different varieties of Flip4Mac's settings, check and un-check them, and nothing works.
Can someone tell me how to fix this?

    nvnv0 wrote:
And what about the deepness of the colour of video???
I thought it all depended on the movie quality.
Anyway, the app has equalizer and video tuner, quite similar to QuickTime. I'm happy to know that it plays WMV files very fast
Progress bar is too wide, it almost takes the entire screen, something that I'm not too happy with, but other than that, it does an awesome job playing WMVs.

  • Saving file takes 2-5 minutes

As I start working on a project, the time it takes to save my file as I'm working suddenly goes from the usual 5 seconds or so to about 2-5 minutes of the spinning beach ball of death. It brings my workflow to a complete halt, and with a deadline rapidly approaching I can't afford to lose this amount of time everytime I want to save my project. I'm growing increasingly frustrated trying to figure out why this is happening.
    My scenario is this:
    Dual G4 1.25 ghz
    Os X 10.4.3
    Logic 7.2
I have a session with only a few tracks in use with multiple instances of the EXS sampler and the Space Designer reverb. I looked up some old threads about this, and people were having this problem when using templates that were originally built in Logic 7. I created a brand new template from scratch tonight in 7.2, and I'm still having the problem. Its driving me nuts.

Go into your current projects settings:
    Menu / File / Project / Settings
Uncheck the check boxes for 'Copy EXS samples....' and 'Copy Space Designer files....'
Otherwise it seems that it resaves these everytime you hit save, or it rescans things again. With these disabled, things will be much snappier.
Probably leave the 'Copy audio files to project folder', as this will make sure that every audio file you import or drag to your project get copied and you dont mess the originals.

  • Preview 'saving changes' takes forever and then crashes!!!!! What should I do?

I Have searched everywhere for answers to no avail. If there's no help to make this 'saving changes 'thing to stop when I'm working with pdf can someone suggest another pdf reader as good or better than preview for me? I need one that uses little memory. Adobe reader seems to be very choppy and sluggish for me. I've got 8gb RAM And I use Mac OSXlatest update 10.9 on a brand new MBP retina. Thanks. Other things I've done so far... I have unchecked the iCloud document and files so I don't save anything to iCloud. Somebody help with this. Thanks

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if iTunes crashed, you would enter "iTunes" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Loading of video files takes forever

Prior to version 7.2, video files you to load immediately in quicktime for mac. Now, I wait for over a minute to load a 700 or so meg file. Does anyone have any idea why and now to improve loading?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AudioVideoInterleave
AVI is a 15 year old container that was abandoned by its creator (Microsoft) nearly ten years ago.
Your modern version of QuickTime has a little trouble with those old codecs and Perian works a lot better.

  • File encoded with x264 takes forever to load in Encore CS 5.5

I use Encore mostly because it takes h.264 video encoded with the x264 compressor, which provides much higher quality than any other compressor. The problem is that these files take forever to load. For example, right now I'm trying to load a video that is about 1 hour and 20 minutes long, encoded at 38 Mbps, and the file is 20.9 GBytes. Now it's 3 PM and I imported this file along with the AC3 file over an hour ago. The Encore process shows as not responding, but when I open the Windows 7 Resource Monitor, in the disk tab it shows that it's reading the video file at a rate of about 45 MB/s, so I didn't kill the Encore process. I know eventually it's going to stop and load the file, but I don't understand why it takes so long. The encoding parameters that I used in x264 are these:
    x264 --level 4.1 --bluray-compat --preset slow --bitrate 38000 --keyint 30 --min-keyint 2 --open-gop --weightp 0 --slices 4 --vbv-bufsize 30000 --vbv-maxrate 40000 --rc-lookahead 40 --tff --output "output" "input"
This comes from a family video that is 1080 59.94i. This time these two parameters appeared because I selected Blu-ray as the target:  --bluray-compat and --open-gop, which I don't normally use, but still, even when I don't use them, video encoded with x264 takes forever to load. Does anybody here know what could be the problem?

What's weird is last year I encoded a file that was almost two hours long and Encore took it without trouble, although it was CS5, not 5.5. Since I had kept the avs and bat files, and also the x264.exe from that encode, I brought them into the current working folder and I just modified the file names in the avs and bat files to point to the new avi and encode to the new h264 file. So I encoded this file, I imported it into Encore, and it still hangs. Maybe it was a change from CS5 to 5.1 that introduced a problem. x264 has been certified to be Blu-ray compliant since over a year ago, and I already put this file to a Blu-ray with TSMuxer, since it was a family video and I didn't really need menus, and it plays perfectly fine in my Blu-ray player.
But I'm sure there must be something, one or two parameters that would make it compatible. For example, after encoding the file again the last time, now I can import it into Encore, and it doesn't stay frozen forever, but it doesn't show me the video and as soon as I try to move the timeline cursor it freezes and doesn't let me do anything for several minutes. So still it's not usable. But it's a change from the first encode where the progress dialog would be there for several hours and do nothing at all.

  • Saving takes forever

    Guys,
saving files in Soundtrack takes forever. any idea why? sometimes it even seems unresponsive and crashes. help is much appreciated

If you are running Tiger 10.4.8 then that's the problem, you need to update your OS to 10.4.10 at least. 10.4.9 has a Pro app update and that will improve your save time.

    After updating to iTunes 11.0.4.,
iTunes 11.0.4. can't locate thousands of files (they are still on the harddisk though).
is there a way to simply relocate them (without having to do it manually for each individual song which would take forever)?

Are these "thousands of files" in an iTunes library that simply cannot be found?
If so, assuming you know exactly where they are, hold the "Option" key while opening iTunes from your dock.  You will then be given a "Choose Library" option.  Choose it and point to your library.

  • Trying to move files to trash takes forever, and finder windows take forever to load files/apps

after recently installing Mackeeper (yes, I know..) and attempting to uninstall, my macbook pro 13" al. is taking forever to move a file to the trash, and it equally takes forever to open a finder window. running 10.6.8.

MacKeeper is an exception to the rule that system modifications should be uninstalled according to the developer's instructions. Although not generally recognized as such, MacKeeper is in fact a trojan, because the developer distributes an uninstaller that purports to delete it, but leaves behind something that causes popup ads to appear in the user’s web browser. Try following the instructions here:
how to uninstall MacKeeper « Phil Stokes
I can't personally vouch for the accuracy of those instructions, but others seem to have had success with them.

Is there any easier way to edit imovie files that have been exported as mov file then added to FCE 4?? As every move I make has to be rendered and takes forever??? Also my recording is going out of focus without me touching the camera, why has this happened any idea what causes this??
    iMovie '08, Mac OS X (10.5.8), FCE 4

My daughter has had her Razr for about 9 months now.  About two weeks ago she picked up her phone in the morning on her way to school when she noticed two cracks, both starting at the camera lens. One goes completely to the bottom and the other goes sharply to the side. She has never dropped it and me and my husband went over it with a fine tooth comb. We looked under a magnifying glass and could no find any reason for the glass to crack. Not one ding, scratch or bang. Our daughter really takes good care of her stuff, but we still wanted to make sure before we sent it in for repairs. Well we did and we got a reply from Motorola with a picture of the cracks saying this was customer abuse and that it is not covered under warranty. Even though they did not find any physical damage to back it up. Well I e-mailed them back and told them I did a little research and found pages of people having the same problems. Well I did not hear from them until I received a notice from Fed Ex that they were sending the phone back. NOT FIXED!!! I went to look up why and guess what there is no case open any more for the phone. It has been wiped clean. I put in the RMA # it comes back not found, I put in the ID #, the SN# and all comes back not found. Yet a day earlier all the info was there. I know there is a lot more people like me and all of you, but they just don't want to be bothered so they pay to have it fix, just to have it do it again. Unless they have found the problem and only fixing it on a customer pay only set up. I am furious and will not be recommending this phone to anyone. And to think I was considering this phone for my next up grade! NOT!!!!
