Scaling of DPM server

Is there any recommended size limit for DPM 2012 R2 regarding max. size of the diskpool? I have read 80 TB for replica volume and 40 TB for the recovery point volume, which would be a limit of max. 120 TB per DPM-server?
/Amir

Hello !
Please refer to this official link :
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh757757.aspx
Data source limit for DPM server
64-bit computers
600 volumes, of which 300 are replica volumes and 300 are recovery point volumes
Data sources are typically spread across approximately 75 servers and 150 client computers.
120 TB per DPM server, with 80 TB replica size with a maximum recovery point size of 40 TB
Hope this helps

  • How to move Hyper-V virtual backups to different DPM server

First off, I want to say that I've spent a large amount of time scanning the forums and internet for a solution to my problem with no luck. Here's the situation, as best as I can describe it:
We currently have 2 2012 R2 DPM servers.  Let's call them DPM1 and DPM2.     DPM 1 was originally, before my employment here, setup as a primary DPM server backing up a Hyper-V HostServer1 (server 2012 R2) that had 4 virtuals
on it.  DPM was setup to backup JUST the virtuals on HostServer1, nothing native on the host itself (files, etc.)
At some point later on DPM2 Server was created, and I believe setup as a Secondary DPM server to DPM1.  (I'm not completely certain of this, as it does not appear to be setup that way now, but I can't tell for sure) but I believe it was because of the
specific error I'm getting (more on that in a moment)
We want to start backing up the virtuals that are on HostServer1 using DPM2, instead of DPM1.   Again, before I started here, the previously person removed all content from DPM1 (protection groups and replica's of the 4 virtual servers that were on
HostServer1, and uninstalled the DPM1 client from HostServer1.
Today I am attempting to add back protection of this HostServer1, but to DPM2.  I am able to successfully install the DPM client from DPM2 to HostServer1.   When I create a new protection group to DPM2, and navigated down the protection options,
I can see the 4 virtuals running on HostServer1.    Here's the weird thing:
I can ADD 3 of the 4 virtuals to the protection group without issue, and successfully back them up!   However, ONE virtual, when I check the box throws this error:
"You have chosen to protect replicas on another DPM server (primary DPM server).   We recommend that you protect the DPM database of the primary DPM server along with the replicas.  Without protecting the DPM Database, you will not be able
to recover the replicas of the primary DPM server in case of a disaster where the DPM Database and the replicas are lost."
    It then throws this error:
"One or more of the selected data sources are already configured for protection on the primary DPM server.  When you switch back protection, the replicas of these data sources will be protected from the primary DPN server. (ID: 31162)"
If I continue through the PG setup wizard, I see that under the PG game, the DPM1 server name listed, and then this one virtual listed underneath it and the replica shows "unable to configure protection."
I have found numerous threads with this error, but the solutions (ranging from running PS scripts using Attatch-ProductionServer.ps1, to Remove-ProductionServer.ps1 from the primary DPM1 box, etc.) all have failed.   Some of these threads are similar
it seems, to my issue, but most of the threads seem to be with an issue when the DPM client is on a protected server, instead of a Hyper-V box running off of a Hyper-V Host, as in my case.
I am either barking up the wrong tree, or not implementing these available DPM PS scripts properly.  Can anyone assist me in pointing out what I might be doing wrong, or if that's not the issue, point me in the right direction?
The odd thing here is that 3 of the 4 virtuals work fine when I moved them to DPM2.  Only one virtual (which doesn't have a DPM agent on it) throws this error.  Somehow, it's as if this particular .vhd has something tagged on it that's making DPM2
think that it's being protected somehow, by DPM1, which is not, or no longer, the case.   If it was a DPMDB issue, why are 3 of the 4 other virtuals working fine?
There may be missing information here that's causing this confusing; I'm not entirely sure all 4 were originally backed up by DPM1; but I *BELIEVE* they were.  it could be just the troublesome virtual was, not %100 certain of that.
There has to be some way to clear out the reference to DPM1 from this HostServer1, virtual, or DPMDB right?  Wherever the issue lies?  I would think it's in one of those.
We are not interested in having a Primary or Secondary server any longer, so if the fix somehow lies in clearing out all references the 2 DPM servers of "Primary vs. Secondary", that's fine too.  We want 2 separate DPM servers protection two
different sets of Hyper-V hosts, unaware of each other.
Any assistance would be much appreciated!

    Hi,
See DPM 2012 content:  Unsupported Scenarios for DPM  under heading "Moving protected servers with DPM
    secondary servers"
With that said, if you call support have the DPM engineer reference ID 2507990- they can assist in cleaning up the DPM2 database so VM's can be protected.

  • Move Protection Group from One DPM server to another DPM server

    Hi Mike,
Can we move Protection Group from one DPM 2012 SP1 to another DPM 2012 R2 version? If yes then what is the steps to perform that. Also i am running DPM servers with co-located and non-colocated configuration. What would be best as per best practice? Because
my 95% backup are SQL backups.

    Hi,
There are no provisions in DPM to move protection groups or protected data sources to a new DPM server and maintain the recovery points.  The best you can do is to stop protection on DPM1 and retain the replica, then run the setdpmserver.exe on the
protected server and point it the DPM2 server. On DPM2, run the attach-productionserver.ps1 script to establish agent communications, then make new protection groups and re-protect the same data sources.  After the retention goals are met, delete
the replica from under inactive protection group on DPM1.

  • Errors in event log of Secondary DPM server protecting replicas on Primary

    Hello again
I have two DPM servers, one situated on-site (primary) and one situated off-site (secondary). Protection jobs seem to be running correctly on both servers in that the jobs complete and I am able to restore data from the backups. I use the primary server
to make the initial backups of critical systems and data (Exchange MDB's etc) and the secondary server to backup those replicas off-site in case of primary site loss or DPM system loss.
The primary server is a physical server and the secondary server is a virtual server. Both DPM servers have their DPM databases stored on one physical SQL server that is in the primary site.
Basically what is happening is that every day our virtual machines are snapshotted (secondary DPM server included) and everyday the snapshot of the secondary DPM server fails. I see the following to entries in the event log of the secondary server.

One thing i wonder, your have installed second DPM if Site one fails or goes done, but SQL for DPM2 is in Site one? try to move SQL to external site for DPM 2

  • Secondary DPM server does not show "protected server group" when attempting to protect primary server

    Hi Guys,
I have a bit of a weird situation with DPM 2012(pre SP1). We have a primary server which is running quite happily(protects 8 SQL servers). I'm attempting to setup a secondary. When I've done this in the past with other DPM versions(this version included)
all i have to do is this following:
Install the same version of DPM on the "secondary machine"
Attach the agent on the "primary server"
Create a new protection group for everything
The catch is that I only see the following:
I can successfully protect the database of the primary server. However the secondary server cannot see any computers protected on the primary for some reason. Any ideas why this object doesn't show at all?

    Hi,
At any time, was the primary DPM Server rebuilt and it's database restored ?
Can you verify that the DPMWriter service is running.

  • Backing up DPM2012R2 Database with a different DPM Server

    Hi,
is it still a recommended way to backup up a DPM 2012R2 database (-> pure SQL on the same Server) with another DPM2012R2 Server?
So just attach it and back it up (like in DPM2010)?
Or shall one always use dpmbackup.exe?
If supported / recommended is it possible to backup a DPM 2012SP1 database with a DPM 2012R2 Server?
    Thanks in advance

    Hi,
Using native DPM backup using D2D is fine for non disaster recovery scenario, otherwise D2T or D2D2T or using secondary protection is best.  DPMBACKUP is non automated, so that is good for ad-hoc backups before major updates.
Scheduling native SQL backups is also viable solution.
If using Secondary DPM Server, both primary and secondary must be the same DPM versions including updates.

  • System state synchronizations and express full backups of protected 2012 R2 machines overload DPM server.

I have one DPM 2012 R2 UR2 server which is running on Windows 2008 R2 and 2 protection groups (A, and B). The server uses direct attached storage for all replicas and recovery volumes.
Group A protects the system state and bare metal recovery of 25 Windows 2008R2 servers. It creates recovery points using express full backup each night at 6PM. The servers range from file/print, SQL, domain controllers, terminal servers, web servers, etc. Total
    data 3TB.
Group B protects the system state and bare metal recovery of only 3 Windows 2012R2 servers. It creates recovery points using express full backup each night (morning) at 1AM. The servers are 1 domain controller, 1 WSUS server, and 1 server that runs VMware VCenter.
    Total data 90GB.
During group A's nightly backup, which takes approximately 2 hours, the DPM server becomes noticeably slower but remains functional. I can open Windows update and check for updates, copy files to and from network locations, launch intenet explorer, etc. It's
stressed since 25 servers are creating backups on it but it remains functional.
During group B's nightly backup the DPM server grinds to a complete halt. Launching internet explorer takes an hour (literally), 10 minutes will pass before I get a menu after clicking the start button. Basically it becomes completely unresponsive until the
backups finish which typically doesn't happen because I'm forced to cancel them upon arriving at work...8 hours later.
I read that DPM uses the built in Windows Backup to protect system state and bare metal recovery. Did something change in Windows Backup from 2008R2 to 2012R2 that would cause this? Why can my DPM server easily backup 25 Windows 2008R2 machines at once in 2
hours yet freezes solid for 8 hours or more when backing up only 3 Windows 2012R2 machines?
I left performance monitor running during the night and it showed an average disk queue length of 49 during group B's backup but everything else was normal. Seems the disks on the DPM server are the bottleneck but again I ask why can my DPM server easily backup
25 Windows 2008R2 machines at once in 2 hours yet freezes solid for 8 hours or more when backing up only 3 Windows 2012R2 machines? Both protection groups use the same disks.
    How can I fix this?
Teenage angst has paid of well, now I'm bored and old.

    Hi CS,
You can also run a performance monitor.
For some basic perfmon counters to help narrow down the possible bottleneck:

  • Error 948 - cannot connect to (dpm server)

    A little history 1st:
I am new to System Center DPM, having signed on to a company that uses it on a short term contract.
I was tasked with getting the remote administration working for DPM and accomplished that with no difficulties other than determining that I had to run the launcher as administrator - what apparently the people here did not think of.
This has been working for weeks since I got it set up, now it does not work.
No updates have been applied to either the server or the Windows 7 machines that have had no problems until a couple of days ago.
Now I get the above error.
I can RDP into the server and bring up the console with no problem.
I have verified that there is network traffic between the 2 machines after I run the launcher as an administrator and  after a reboot and none before.
    Thanks,
    Brad
Does anyone have any suggestions on where to look for the problem?

  • DPM Server System State and Bare MEtal using SqlServerWriter

    HI All,
Having issuing with bare metal backups of a DPM server and was hoping to get some help.
I have a DPM 2010 Server running on server 2008 r2. SQL databases are hosted locally on a non system drive (e)
When I run Windows Server Backup locally on the box to do a bare metal backup (it selects c and d drives along with system state) the backup fails.
    vssadmin lsit writers shows the following after the backup fails;
    Writer name: 'SqlServerWriter'
       Writer Id: {a65faa63-5ea8-4ebc-9dbd-a0c4db26912a}
       Writer Instance Id: {9a1fdd12-d702-4ffc-914d-4361259cc55f}
       State: [8] Failed
       Last error: Inconsistent shadow copy
    Application log shows this;
The backup operation that started at '‎2014‎-‎07‎-‎09T08:30:54.453000000Z' has failed because the Volume Shadow Copy Service operation to create a shadow copy of the volumes being backed up
failed with following error code '2155348129'. Please review the event details for a solution, and then rerun the backup operation once the issue is resolved.
The backup log shows exactly the same error as above.
When I stop the SQL Server VSS Writer service and run the backup it runs just fine, however then my database backup on this server fails.
The C drive partition is marked as active.
Any ideas as to why bare metal backup is using the SQL writer and failing. Is there any way to specify what writer to use?
    Thank in advance.

  • Unable to connect to DPM Server 2012 SP1

We are getting the below on client machine when we have successfully install DPM Console on client machine SCOM console is already installed on the client and rights are already given to client on SCOM roles DPM Read Only Operator and SCOM console is open
on client machine we are using SCOM 2012 SP1 and DPM 2012 SP1 The error which I got is given below when we try to connect the DPM and one more thing if use RUN As Adminsitrator on client machine to connect the console from DPM ADMIN ID it will connects but
from the client ID it doesn't connect it and gives the below error. Kindly tell me the solution
Unable to connect to DPM Server Name (ID:33333)
    1. Verify that the DPM service is running on this computer
    2. Verify that the current has been added to at least one of the roles in scom
    3. Open SCOM Console and then try launching the dpm console
    4. If you have re-imported the mp recently the role configuration may be corrupted. Open the DPM specific roles
and check if the roles have task assigned to them. If not delete the roles and recreate them.

  • At what point should the storage pool be connected to a replacement DPM server?

I have backed up the DPMDB and  SQL DB from our "old" DPM server, removed it from the domain, and installed the same version, DPM 2007, SP1, on a new server with the same FQDN.  At what point do I connect the storage pool to the new server?
Before restoring the db, or after restoring the db but before doing a dpmsync?  Nowhere in the sea of documentation on migrating and upgrading have I found that little detail mentioned.  Please help!

Mike, I'm doing another DPM rebuild and upgrade, and I connected the storage pool too soon.  Can I save the situation, or do I need to detach the disks, uninstall DPM, delete the db, reinstall, restore the db from the previous backup, and then attach
the disks and sync?  Thank you!

  • What Specific Firewall Rules are Needed for the DPM Server?

    Questions:
Are any of these rules not needed?
We know the Agent Coordinator rules are needed on protected servers. Are they also needed on the DPM server (including if we use secondary DPM servers)?
The DPM Configuring Firewalls TechNet page says DCOM uses TCP 135 and the RPC Dynamic ports. Does that mean we also need a rule that opens all TCP RPC Dynamic ports for
any program? Or is this not necessary since we have rules for msdpm.exe and dpmra.exe? Reference:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh757794
What other rules may be missing, if any?
Note that we do not include rules for ports 53 (DNS), 88 (Kerberos), 389 (LDAP), 137-139 & 445 (NetBIOS) because we already open these ports in other group policy objects.
Also, the below forums post says two exceptions for SQL Server are needed on the DPM server to allow the Remote Administrator console to work. Is there any documentation in the DPM TechNet site on these rules?

Does anyone have any comments on this post? We would especially appreciate some input from Microsoft reps to help us ensure we're setting up the correct firewall rules.

    1) View and resolve all alerts for the library and its drive(s). Retry the operation after resolving the alerts.
    2) Go to the Library tab in the Management pane and click on Rescan. Once the rescan operation has completed successfully, retry the operation.
What should I do? Do you have any solution?

    Hi Khemarin,
In the error it states that one tape drive isn't online. Go to your device manager and verify that all of your tape drives and your media library is ok. Does all the tape drives show up in the DPM console?
If everything looks ok but you still got the problem please try to use DPMDriveMappingTool.exe to remap the tape drives.

I have just installed 2 fresh servers.

DPM1 is online and working great but when I setup DPM2 I installed the agent to DPM1 so that I could have a secondary server to backup all of DPM1 information. When creating the protection group I double clicked on DPM1 and received this.
Any help would really be appreciated.
