Scanning of hardware using Java

I would like to know, if anyone knows a class/method or whatever that i can use to scan hardware/software and configurations in a PC.

Well, the problem is that a laptop cannot really "connect" to a light or light switch. In any way. No way.
If your lights come with one of those neato remotes, there is a solution. Tape/glue the remote to the lid of your laptop, and once you close the laptop, push the "power" button on your remote. That should do the trick.
Otherwise, you have to rewire your lights to go through some sort of mechanism that can be controlled using a neato remote. Then refer to the method listed above :D
I'm not kidding one bit.

• Using Java to control external hardware

Hi all,
I'm new to the forums, I am an experienced Java developer for the internet and have done various GUI based academic and personal projects.
What I want to work on at the moment is basically a swing based controller program which will controller some hardware which switches LEDs on and off, moving later to maybe fans and motors and stuff.
My initial thoughts were get an LED matrix connected using a USB port, and then get a USB API to send commands to this. It would be far better if I somehow got a control board connected (wired or wireless) and then used Java to send over commands for a start to turn LEDs on and off.
In essence I'm in need of answers to 2 questions:
1) what hardware controller to use for this project, and how is it to be connected to my pc.
2) which API?
Thanks, I look forward to your replies.

I believe that parallax makes a microcontroller (Javelin ???) with some sort of java vm in firmware.
Depending on your budget and assuming you want to go the microcontroller route, it might work for you.

• How to ge a hardware id using java?

how to ge a hardware id using java? like cpu id??

Why do you want the CPU code ?
If you could read this using Java, it would fail most of the time, because a great many people are either not running Intel CPUs, or, like me, have the identification number 'feature' turned off.
You'd get along much better if you view the Virtual Machine as the hardware on which you are running. Thus the concept of a CPU, or the 'Operating System' doesn't exist. Not true, but it would save you a great deal of disappointment, and would make your code much more portable. Can your code run on a machine that interprets Java natively in the CPU, for example?

• New "Windows Programming Using Java" Website

Our newly created "Windows Programming Using Java" website (http://fivedots.coe.psu.ac.th/~ad/winJava/) is for programmers who want to extend Java's capabilities on Windows XP and/or Vista, but aren't sure where to start. One of the drawbacks of Java's portability is that many Java programmers have a rather sketchy knowledge of Windows-specific programming.
We plan to explain how Java applications can utilize Windows application software, OS features, and hardware beyond the reach of Java's standard libraries. A variety of Java/Windows programming techniques will be explained, including:
* Java's employment of the Win32 API via C, JNI, and J/Invoke.
* Java's utilization of Window's Command Line Interface (CLI) and batch files, accessed through Java's Runtime, ProcessBuilder, and Process classes.
* Java and Windows object-based scripting, centered around the use of VBScript, Windows Script Host (WSH), and Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI).
* Java interoperability with COM, including hosting of ActiveX controls in Swing containers using jacoZoom.
This website is a work in progress, with four chapters available for download at the moment. We'll be adding more regularly, and would love feedback on what we're doing.
Thanks,

Hi, I am looking the similar kind of requirement that you had done.. Do you have any more details on the code that is working for you . All i need is if the user logs in successfully in windows, the the app should be accessible. Please let me know if you have the code with you on this problem.
Thanks in advance

• Accessing device registers and microcontroller registers using java

We are writing an application that needs to work with any kind of microcontroller(more specifically targetted towards 8051 and 80188/86 microcontrollers) in a constrained memory environment with code/data not
more than 128 KB or at the most 256 KB.
We would look at using the JVM in hardware rather than software as an accelerator chip on our boards..
However I wanted to know whether there is a way wherein I can accomplish the above platform independence for microcontroller and still access low level registers for the memory mapped I/O devices using Java..
If anybody knows about this please let me know at

Not in pure Java, although you can do that in JNI. But if this is the main purpose of your program, you might as well use C++ or some more low-level language.

• "Could not complete scan" error when using Windows Fax and Scan

"Could not complete scan" error when using Windows Fax and Scan with a HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus All-In-One network printer.
Printing is fine.
When using the HP Scan application, get the error "Scanner communication cannot be established".
When scanning from the printer itself it fails with the same message. In addition the printer panel displays the error:
"The scan could not be completed due to one or more of the following issues:
Connection to the computer is lost
The scanner is in use
OCR application is not installed"
My PC is a HP Compaq Pro 6300 SFF 64bit, with ethernet cable to the router and ethernet cable to the printer
Originally ran Windows 8.0; recently upgraded to Windows 8.1.
Older separate Netgear router and modem was replaced with a newer Netgear Router/Modem, but both experienced the same problem.
There was no problem with the original Windows 8.0 configuration and only after upgrading to 8.1 did the problem emerge.
On my home netowrk I have an HP ProBook 6550b running Windows 7 sp1 that uses wireless to get to the Router, and it has no problem with scanning.
I have followed the recommendations of a number of articles relating to this issue (including: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=us&lc=en&docname=c02915410&product=4323659#N94), but there has been no change in behaviour.
The printer has a static IP address;
Power settings have been adjusted to Never for Turn off Hard Disk; Sleep and Hybrid Sleep.
Scanning has been tested with all firewalls and antivirus turned off and in Selective Startup.
The printer has been plugged directly into the power socket.
With all these settings the Windows 8.1 cannot scan while the Windows 7 laptop with wireless to the router has no problems.
Appreciate any insights into this problem.
I can only surmise that the problem is a compatibility problem between the 8600 Printer and Windows 8.1.
Any ideas?
regards,
Motorbike

You can determine if there is compatiblity between the printer and PC by checking the Windows 8.1 hardware compatibility list. I have done that and it is shown to be fully compatible. If the driver you installed before was only the basic driver,it would explain the lack of scan and copy functionality.
Download and install the Windows 8.1 full feature driver and software on the HP Compaq Pro 6300 SFF 64bit PC .

• Manipulating hardware in java

Can i use java to manipulate a hardware like CD-Rom, VideoCard and a like? if yes... what specific classes that i can use?

Not directly, no (at least not without JNI, but then it's not really Java is it?). You can however use all of those through the classes provided to you and 3rd party APIs. Like Java3D allows you to create 3D stuff and so forth.

some items unrelated to your main question:
*) When drawing in JPanels and other JComponents, you should override paintComponent, not paint. Also, the first method in this override should be super.paintComponent(g). This will refresh your screen and will eliminate the need for your having to fill the rectangle with a color on each iteration of paintComponent. You'll have to call setBackground(Color c) on your drawing JPanel somewhere in the initialization code though.
*) If you're using a Timer with Swing apps, consider using a Swing Timer. It works well and has the added convenience of having all code in it's actionlistener called on the event dispatch thread, the main Swing thread.
*) Finally, when posting your code, please use code tags so that your code will retain its formatting and be readable. To do this, you will need to paste already formatted code into the forum, highlight this code, and then press the "code" button at the top of the forum Message editor prior to posting the message. You may want to click on the Preview tab to make sure that your code is formatted correctly. Another way is to place the tag
at the top of your block of code and the tag
at the bottom, like so:
// your code block goes here.
// note the differences between the tag at the top vs the bottom.
or
{code}
// your code block goes here.
// note here that the tags are the same.

• Help needed- Check hardware with java

Hi everyone:)
I'm working on a colledge project and i need to know if anybody knows a way to check hardware's capabilities using java, i.e. i want to use java to check if a machine can play a sound clip, or has enough free space, etc...
Can someone please point me some clues on how to get there (prefeberably using J2ME)?
Thanks in advance,
Pedro

Download the SAP Java connector (JCo).
This has documentation and sample code to get you started.

• Implement Firewall by using Java

I want to create a firewall(3rd layer) by using Java. Is it possible? Is there any class for these purposes?
I'm not sure if the "DatagramPacket" is the class that I'm looking for.
What is the lower level of network programming which is supported by Java?
Thanks

hm, although i'm not in the "java is too slow" camp i'm still surprised. but then, when using a box as dedicated firewall, java performance is surely good enough.
what made me wonder is that java does not give access to network functionality on a low level which is required for packet filtering. so it would only be feasible to accomplish an application level firewall. i'm no expert at this but i would guess that this kind of firewall has more overhead than a packet filtering firewall.
some research revealed that only the frontend seems to be written in java while the firewall is a configured linux system:
Developed with NetMaster's own Linux distribution tailored specifically for firewall applications, Gateway Guardian is a very flexible, high-end firewall that takes a revolutionary approach to allowing a company to use a lower-end PC as their Internet gateway. Running on a PC that is not the Internet gateway, Gateway Guardian uses a pure Java application to preconfigure hardware, Internet provider settings, and firewall rules through a wizard like format. When the information has been entered, the Java application writes an entire Linux operating system and the custom firewall configuration onto a 3-1/4" floppy diskette.

• How to send sms to mobile from tomcatserver using java code?

Hi,
Could you please let me know that,
How to send sms to mobile from tomcatserver using java code? Please provide the code snippet.
Thanks in advance.

Yes, but something needs to send that message. You can't just take an arbitrary computer and send an SMS, it does not have the hardware to do that.
So either you have a mobile through which you do that or more likely - you use some sort of online service to do it. Whatever choice you make will determine what code you will have to write to get it done. Nobody is going to deliver the code to you, that's your job. It is also your job to figure out what service you are going to use.

• Virus Scan a file in java

Is there any API in java that scan a file for virus without using any external resources?

Sreejith-JavaDeveloper wrote:
Is it possible with the help of any external scan engine? You can call out to any external program you wish, but doing this kind of makes using Java pointless in the first place doesn't it?
1) Could you write a virus scanner in Java? Yes.
2) Would it be very good? No
3) Can you invoke some other virus scanner from Java? Yes
4) Can you programmatically interact with some other virus scanner from Java? It depends on whether that virus scanner implements an appropriate interface for you. Not likely.
