SCOM - Monitoring statistics in an Management group

Hi All,
Can someone share any information that how we can get a consolidated data on the monitoring statisticcs of what all things are monitored in a management group in SCOM 2007 R2. I need to give a presentationon details of parameters being monitored and comprehensive
picture of the monitoring statistics in and environment.
Rgs,

Hi,
Based on my understanding that you want to list all monitored objects within your management group, if that, then this is a very big data.
We can use Get-SCOMClassInstance command to get one or more class instances. As there are many classes that monitored, and for each class, we also have many instances.
As we know, with proper management pack imported, and then we can discovery proper objects to monitor. Such as Active Directory. But to know what information is monitored, we should know all monitors and rules in the management pack. This is also a very
large data.
Most time, we use SCOM to monitor those servers or network devices based on our need, and with the proper management packs imported, we get those monitored. And we should also read the management pack guide to use it more proper. And with those monitors
and rules, we can get alerts, warnings. And we can also check performance viewers for those monitored objects.

  • Is it possible to deploy 2 SCOM 2012 R2 reporting in a SQL server which already has SCOM reporting of a different management group but with 2 different reporting instance.

    Hi Experts,
I have a typical situation in the LAB environment. Hope some one helps. I have Installed a SCOM 2012 R2 with SQL 2012 SP1 in a single server (Management group 1). I have installed another management group on another server using this SQL server for its database
so i have everything going fine.
The first management group has its reporting installed in the SQL server. For the second i created a new named instance for that. But i cannot run the SCOM setup in the SQL server (Also holding the Management group 1 MS) as 1 st reporting is already there.
When i run the setup it is asking me to repair it. I don't get the install option so i can install the reporting for management group 2 in the named instance.
Default instance is being used by the 1st management group.
Can any one figure a possibility for installing 2 SCOM reporting services for different management groups in a same SQL 2012 server please.
    Gautam.75801

    Hi Yan Li,
Thank you for the reply. So as you are aware If i need to instal reporting, i need to run the SCOM 2012 R2 setup in the SQL server and select reporting and select the
instance and then mention the management server there right. I am not getting that option there it is asking me to remove or repair the existing installation as there is already a SCOM entire setup including reporting there. As it is a lab there is no problem
in testing. I have 2 reporting instances. Any suggestions for me on how to overcome this issue and deploy the second reporting in the new named instance ?
Below is the screenshot of the error what i am talking about when i run SCOM 2012 R2 setup to install reporting in the SQL server
When i click on add feature reporting is greyed out (As already 1st management groups reporting is installed)
When i click on remove or repair it
uninstalls the existing one. But i want both SCOM 2012 r2 reporting to be there(For both Management group). Is it possible ? If yes What is the trick to run the setup ?

  • SCOM 2012 Global Architecture, One management group or multiple?

    Hi Folks,
I work for a global firm, we have multiple data caters in different regions. America, UK, Australia, China etc etc. We are looking to roll out SCOM 2012 for monitoring all systems. Our environment
    1,000 Windows servers
All servers on the same Active Directory domain
10 Mbps links between data centers.
My question is around whether to use multiple management groups or one?   I’ve seen recommendations for both. For example
In the Infrastructure Planning and Design guide for SCOM 2012 it is stated:
“A centralized management model with large remote locations works best with a management group in each region and a local management group (which provides a consolidated view of alerts and status) in the parent location. In this case, the centralized management
group connects through the software development kit (SDK) and functions as an additional console on each of the connected management groups.”
However moderators in this forum have stated
“Each management group has its own set of SQL Servers and Management Servers \ Gateways. It also adds considerably to administrative overhead. I'd try to avoid
    multiple management groups where possible.”
” It will get expensive in terms of hardware and software with multiple management groups and you will duplicate a lot of work with regards to overrides”
“If you go with multiple Management Groups then you would need to add on a fair number of SQL licenses plus additional hardware. “
“Presumably if I have multiple management groups will that mean I will have to
create rules for each Management Group- correct. Same
with overrides. It could add a lot of administrative overhead. “
It would seem easier to just deploy one management group with the management servers in one datacenter but I’m concerned with performance. I’ve heard
stories about SCOM deployments architected in this way not performing well because of network latency. i.e admins from all regions besides the region local to the SCOM deployment not wanting to use SCOM because application performance is too slow.
What would the SCOM experts recommend for this scenario?
    MH

    1) My question is around whether to use multiple management groups or one?
Factors to consider in determine the number of Management group
     • Scaling
     • Agents separated from their management server by WAN-speed network links
     • Political, administrative or security requirements within the organization requiring separate management groups.
     • A view of AD DS topology required across multiple forests.
     • A dedicated management group required for auditing purposes.
     • Disaster recovery functionality required.
     • Consolidated views of connected management groups required in Operations Manager.
     • Operations Manager integration with the VMM console.
     With refer to your situation
     a) 1,000 Windows servers
     b) All servers on the same Active Directory domain
     c) 10 Mbps links between data centers.
It is suggest that one Management group is required.
    2) It would seem easier to just deploy one management group with the management servers in one datacenter but I’m concerned with performance
It is recommend that you should deploy Gateway server in region office which has more than 10 agents.
    • Gateway server reduce network bandwidth utilization. Agents located across WAN links consume network bandwidth, potentially affecting service delivery to and from the remote location. A gateway server can consolidate the traffic.

  • Monitoring servers in SCOM 2012 via different locals within the same management group

    Hi,
I have 2 management servers in a same management group. The 1st one is having English (US) locale while other is installed on Swedish locale. Both are accessed by different users having same admin rights.
Once a USER 1 try to register a server through authoring tab from 1st management server(installed on English locale), a profile/group wrt the server registered is created successfully but the USER on 2nd management server (installed on Swedish locale) can
not see the same in Authoring tab. He can view it in Monitoring tab as as well as Administration tab.
The Vice versa is also true.
Does any one have idea that is it SCOM 2012's expected behaviour wrt 2 2 different users on 2 different locales within a same management group ?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
I am a little confused, what do you mean by "register a server through authoring tab"?
Do you mean that when you discover a server on 1st MS with discovery wizard then you cannot see it on 2nd MS(and the vice versa)?
As far as I know, all those information should be stored in the operation database which is shared to both MSs within the same management group.
We may use SQL query to find the discovered server on the operation database. Please also check operation manager event logs to get more information to troubleshoot this issue.

  • SCOM 2012 RC - SCVMM 2012 RC - Virtual machine manager management group is not getting monitored

    Hi All,
I have integrated SCOM 2012 with SCVMM 2012 environment. I could see two strange behaviors. All these instance are running on Windows 2008 R2 + Sp1 OS along with SQL 2008 R2 for database.
    1) I could see two instance of VirtualmanagerDB
in the Database State view under the Microsoft SQL Server, out of that
one is showing as monitored and another one is
showing as not monitored. Why it is showing two instance of the same database? How can I remove the not monitored one?
    2) In the distributed apps- Virtual machine manager management group is not showing as a monitored item. However the SCVMM server is getting monitored.
I'd appreciate if someone could help me out in understanding and resolving this.
    Regards,
    Ren.

    Hi
I opened up a connect ticket on this on 17th Jan so sorry for not noticing your post earlier. The response was:
Health State dashboard view is targeted to two state views. "Agent Watcher State" and "Agent State". "Agent State" view (view with duplicate entry) is targeted to an abstract class "VMM Agent" which has below child classes.
        VMM Library Agent
        VMM Host Agent
        Guest Agent
For the Dashboard view, we need to taget the view to "Host Agent" not "VMM Agent". When we install VMM, it adds itself as a Library server and that is the reason for duplicate entry (VMM Library Agent).
    Cheers

  • Running SCOM ACS in multiple customer environments from the same SCOM management group ?

We are currently monitoring multiple customer environments from the one SCOM management group and are looking at possibilities of using ACS for auditing.
Is this technically possible ?  Does the ACS collector service need to sit on the customer side ?  could it be installed on the same server acting as the SCOM gateway server ?

    Hi,
The number of ACS forwarders that can be supported by a single ACS collector and ACS database can vary, depending on many factors, such as the number of events that your audit policy generates, the role of the computers that the ACS forwarders monitor.
If your environment contains too many ACS forwarders for a single ACS collector, you can install more than one ACS collector. Each ACS collector must have its own ACS database.
An ACS Collector must be installed on computers running Operations Manager management server and for security reasons, it must also be a member of an Active Directory domain.

  • SCOM monitoring basics

I realize that there are out-of-the-box monitors and alerts. But, as a learning experience, I want to view the free space on the C: drive of my production servers as a health state. It should show all of my production servers as green, unless the free
space on the C: drive drops below 10% and then it should show red.
    1)
Under “Administration”, I created a management pack and I called it “Production Servers MP”.
    2)
I want a group that only contains my production servers (“PROD” is in the server name).
Under “Authoring”, I went to the “Groups” section and I created a new group called “Production Servers Group”.
I selected the “Production Servers MP”.
I added “Dynamic Members” to the group.
I created a rule that says “(Object is Windows Server AND (DNS Name Contains PROD) AND True).
There were no Subgroups or Excluded Members.
    3)
Under “Authoring”, I went to the “Monitors” section and I created a new “unit monitor”.  It is “Windows Performance Counter” – “Simple Threshold”.
I selected the “Production Servers Group” that I created earlier for the “Monitor Target”.
I selected “Performance” for the “Parent Monitor”.
For the Performance Counter, I selected “Logical Disk” for the Object, “% Free Space” for the counter and “C:” for the Instance.
I gave it a threshold value of 10%.
I checked the box for “Generate alerts for this monitor”.
I left it at Priority at Medium and Severity at Critical.
    4)
When I go to the “Monitoring” section, I can see the “Production Servers MP” group that I created.
I’m very confused at this point. No matter what options I try to give for creating a State View, it doesn’t show me the monitor I made.
How do I create a “state view” that will only show the health of the free space of drive C: from the monitor that I created?

    Hi
Just to add to what John has already stated in a more general answer. You cannot create monitoring in this way. Although it is "logical" to think that you are applying a rule or a monitor to a group, SCOM does not work this way.
You need to target a class. Never target a rule, monitor or discovery at a group. It just won't work the way you expect:
    http://scug.be/dieter/2011/06/20/scom-2007-target-a-rule-or-monitor-to-a-computer-group/
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/momteam/archive/2007/11/14/targeting-series-part-2-why-targeting-a-computer-group-fails.aspx
A poster called Rule and Monitor Targeting Best Practices is available in pdf format at:
    http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=125048
Equally - if you are ever looking to create a monitor that checks multiple instances of the same class, then you need to follow this:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/kevinholman/archive/2009/11/24/writing-monitors-to-target-logical-or-physical-disks.aspx
There is a steep learning curve to SCOM and it might be worth looking through some technet labs and also this:

Has anyone found an answer to this yet?  I have uninstalled/reinstalled the agents both manually and through the push. Rebooted the client, rebooted the  sce server. Hey Nathan,
Yea I have sent the script to eveyone that has aked for it. I dont know if its helped anybody else as none has given me any feedback either way.
I guess I can post it here for everyone to use.
Please keep in mind that if you use this script from MS its at your own risk, If your DB blows up, massive catastrophic failure ensues and so forth ITS YOUR OWN FAULT. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE GOOD BACKUPS
Step 1) Run this against your SCE 2007 DB
    DECLARE @BaseManagedEntityInternalId int
    DECLARE @BaseManagedEntityId uniqueidentifier
    DECLARE @ViewName sysname
    DECLARE @Statement nvarchar(max)
    SET @BaseManagedEntityInternalId = 0
WHILE EXISTS (SELECT * FROM BaseManagedEntity WHERE (BaseManagedEntityInternalId >
    @BaseManagedEntityInternalId))
    BEGIN
    SELECT TOP 1
    @BaseManagedEntityInternalId = bme.BaseManagedEntityInternalId
    ,@BaseManagedEntityId = bme.BaseManagedEntityId
    ,@ViewName = met.ManagedTypeViewName
    FROM BaseManagedEntity bme
    JOIN ManagedType met ON (bme.BaseManagedTypeId = met.ManagedTypeId)
    WHERE (bme.BaseManagedEntityInternalId > @BaseManagedEntityInternalId)
    AND (bme.IsDeleted = 0)
    ORDER BY BaseManagedEntityInternalId
    SELECT @Statement = 'IF NOT EXISTS (SELECT * FROM ' + QUOTENAME(@ViewName) + '
    WHERE BaseManagedEntityId = ''' + CAST(@BaseManagedEntityId AS varchar(50)) + ''')
    PRINT ''' + CAST(@BaseManagedEntityId AS varchar(50)) + ' ' + @ViewName + ''''
    EXECUTE(@Statement)
    END
    STEP 2)
If your problem was the same a mine you should get some GUID’s returned.  (For example 93790c0B-09C4-3A4D-CE72-F4E3Dd917D78 MTV_DeploymentSettings)
Using the GUID that we got in the output file
    Execute the below given query:
    ==========================
    select fullname
    from basemanagedentity
    where basemanagedentityid = ‘<GUID>’
    ==========================
Verify that the device or the object mentioned in the above output is not displayed in Operations console.
Only in case if the object is not displayed then use the below given query to delete it from database.
    ==========================
    update basemanagedentity
    set isdeleted = 1
    where basemanagedentityid = ‘<GUID>’
    ==========================
Before executing the above query please ensure that you have the backup of the database. Also note that you need to run the above said query only incase if you do not see the object in the Operations console.
After executing this query, run this stored procedure:
    ==========================
    exec p_Detectandfixinstancespaceinconsistencies
    ==========================
    Once it is done:
    > Stop all the three OpsMgr services: health, Config and SDK on Management Server
    > Cleared the health service state folder.
    > Start all the three OpsMgr services: SDK, Config, and health on Management Server.
    > Wait for 30 minutes and see if the agents start getting monitored.

We recently upgraded from SCOM 2012 SP1 to R2, but I'm unable to get the reporting role installed. I get to the part where I enter the Data Reader account credentials, then get the error "Data Reader account provided is not same as that in the management
group." No matter what I do I cannot get passed this error.
Here is what I have tried so far:
    - I have verified the correct DR account is set in the Data Warehouse Report deployment account and profile.
    - I have deleted the DR account from the profile and added it back.
    - Verified all permissions are setup properly on the SQL server for all databases, included reporting.
    - Completely uninstalled SSRS and re-installed.

you must distribute the Run As account to ensure that all members of the resource pool (All Management Servers Pools) have access to the permissions in the Run As account.
    Also check below link {It's same issue}

  • 2 way Connected Management Groups in OpsMgr 2007

    Hi,
Are there any issues in having 2 way connected management groups in 2007R2.
Site 1 is used in Jan, with Site 2 in standby but we want to see Alerts for Site 2 on site 1 so have connected Site 1 to Site 2 via connected management groups.
Following month site 2 is used with site 1 in standby, we can view Site 2 alerts via site 1 but not the rest of site 2 information
So if we link Site 2 to Site 1 we could monitor site 1 with site 2 in detail?
This a good idea or are there big overheads xfering info both ways?
    Thanks

    Hi,
As the connected management group is mainly for viewing and interacting with all the alerts and other monitoring data, I think this should related to the amount of the data.

  • Can monitor SCCM agent health through SCOM, monitor logs like CCMeval and setup alerts

Can monitor SCCM agent health/inactive agents through SCOM, monitor logs like CCMeval and setup alerts

You can find some management packs here:
    http://systemcenter.pinpoint.microsoft.com/en-US/applications/search/Operations-Manager-d11?q=
There are other sites as well but this is the MS page for hosting MP's.  The default SCCM 2012 Management pack for SCOM 2012 is pretty functional, this page talks a little bit about it:
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/kevinholman/archive/2012/12/11/monitoring-configmgr-2012-with-opsmgr.aspx
If I remember correctly, it does NOT include a lot of client monitoring but I could be wrong.  It might take some custom monitor creation or management pack downloads to get exactly what you're wanting.  If I can find something like that
I'll add it to this post.
A good rule of thumb that I live by with SCOM, in case the product is new to you, is to save all your changes and customizations to the SCCM management pack in a custom-created management pack.
