Scripting iMovie '08?

Folks -
I would like to be able to use Automator or AppleScript to automate some tasks within iMovie '08. I do not seem to be able to do it, however, since IM08 does not seem to be AppleScript enabled. Is there a plugin or tool that would let me do this?
Why do I want to use scripting? I have made several updates to projects, and want to re-publish them, all-at-once, to the gallery pages. Since it takes me 5x real time just to upload the video, it would be nice to do overnight. (2x to render, 5x to upload)

To the best of my knowledge, iMovie 08 is not enabled to work with Automator.

  • Anyone have a script or program allowing timed Capture for FCP or iMovie?

I work with a broadcaster who wants to automatically record programs in FCP or iMovie in the DV mode either in FCP or iMovie. EyeTV 2 has a great system for setting up any mac to automatically record programs direct from a satellite feed or cable box, but unfortunately it compresses the video as it captures it to its own proprietary format. (30 minutes = about 3 GB) I really need to capture without any compression, and ideally that should be in FCP. Anyone seen a script or a plug in that would launch Log and Capture and begin capturing for a specific time, UNATTENDED? (The unattended part is key since we need to capture a number of satellite programs in the wee hours of the morning when we have not staff on hand).

    Might.
Try over in their forum. You just may get lucky.
I do remember the good Capt Mench posted something like this a while back but my feeble brain seems leaky today.
something about using iCal scheduling & alerts along with apple scripts might be able to get you what you want ...

  • IMovie 10.0.5 crashes into millions of colored pixels when I add v/o narrative using Pages to read script from and using a USB mic attached to my iMac. I am running Mavericks OS X10.9.4

Hi, I have been editing a project for a week and over the past 2 days iMovie 10.0.5 has crashed into millions of colored pixels about 6 times. I am working on a 27" iMac running OS X 10.9.4 with 6GB of Ram, plenty of space on start up disc (217 GB's)  The crash seems to coincide with any effort to use an external USB mic plugged in to record a narrative. I can record the voice over but a few minutes later I get some awful audio scrubbing sounds and then it pixelates. Why is this happening and how can I work around this to record a voiceover please? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm nervous to continue if my work is going to ultimately be lost. My project is currently about seventeen mins and includes, video clips from 2 different cameras (both Canon) a music track from iTunes and some still images (jpegs.)

    Thanks Erik,
If nothing else, this huge list of updates and fixes, shows clearly that the Logic Dev team is working hard on fixing and improving LPX to a major degree.... and from the list of fixes done.. show they do read the bug reports submitted!
    As an aside....
I recall how all the 'naysayers' prior to LPX (and in some cases, since...)  were proclaiming how Logic was dead, the team was being disbanded, we won't see any further development, the Dev team doesn't listen or care... and so on....... I wonder where those people are now?

  • IMovie HD unexpectedly quits when importing an AVI file

I have used iMovie HD in the past with the movies I take from my Canon SD1000 initialized camera. I downloaded some videos from my camera to my HD with image capture, and then tried to import them. iMovie is unexpectedly quiting, rendering the program useless for my needs. Any help would be appreciated.

Wow, and welcome to the forums.
Sounds like your Mac needs a bit of a tune-up (I saw "kernal panic" somewhere in the very complete documentation). My routine is to run MacJanitor (free download via VersionTracker) so it triggers all the Mac's maintenance scripts. Then use Apple's Disk Utility (in Applications) to repair permissions.

  • Importing from iMovie 06, lose capture dates

When I import old iMovie 06 movies, the capture dates gets lost. Here is one of the original clips in iMovie 06:
However, after importing in iMovie 11, the capture dates are lost.  I tried many variations, like import the iMovie 06 project, or cd to the *.iMovieProject directory and import the actual clips, etc.
Now, good iMovie11 clips have the capture date imbedded in the file name (as in clip-2010-03-14 hh;mm;ss.dv).  However, the ones imported from iMovie 06 end up in iMovie 11 with simple names such as clip55.dv.  So it's not surprising I cannot see the capture dates in iMovie 11.
So I looked inside the *.iMovieProject directory hoping to find the capture dates either in the file name or in a plist, but I couldn't (nothing in the plists below)
    ... Jan 23  2010 Cache/Thumbnails.plist
    ... Jan 23  2010 Cache/Timeline Movie Data.plist
    ... Jan 23  2010 Cache/Timeline Movie.mov
    ... Nov  8  2009 Media/Clip55.dv
    etc
Finally, I opened Clip55.dv in QuickTime and looked at MovieInspector, but I could not see any capture date (similar to exif in jpegs).
So obviously I missed them. My question is where in the iMovie 06 project can I find them?   If accessible, I can write a script to fix the clips imported in iMovie11 by changing their names. I tried it manually, and it worked.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi - Couple of things.
Click on the offending clip that you imported from iMovie in your FCP Bin and type Command + 9 to see the item properties. Either report those item properties, or if easier, take a screen shot of the item properties and post that.
Then click any where on the timeline you are having trouble with and type Command + 0 (Zero) to see the sequence settings. Either report those settings or take a screen shot of the Sequence Settings window and post that.
In order for FCP to use the video without rendering, both the items properties of the source clip, and the sequence settings must match - and both must be within standard production parameters.
Also, you can click on the source clip in the FCP Bin, then control-click on the clip and select Reveal in Finder from the drop down menu. Once that file is revealed, open it in Quicktime 7 and see if if plays correctly there.
    Hope this helps.

  • Help! Can't update iwork and imovie because "You have updates available for other accounts".

I recently purchased Macbook Pro with iMovie, iwork keynotes, pages and numbers preloaded in the machine. Now the App Store icon indicates that I have updates available.  So when I open up app store and click update, I got an warning stating " You have updates avaialbe for other accounts - to update this application, sing in to the account you used to purchase it".
I called tech support.  I was told that I must have had another account.  But clearly I don't have another account.  I'm not alzheimer.  If I had another account, I would have remembered it.  I used the same account for ipod, iphone, itune for many many years.  So I went on the support communities for help.  I read some post saying I should add my hard drive to spotlight privacy, then remove it.  I tried it, it didn't work.  Some said I need to enable something by entering a script to the terminal.  I followed the steps, it didn't work. Then some other post said that I should delete the apps, then reinstall it.  So stupidly enough, I deleted keynotes to "TEST" if it works.  Guess what? I completed removed keynotes from my macbook.  I can't even recover it?! At least before I deleted it, I had the old version of keynotes although obsolete, still functional.  Now I removed it, I don't even know how to reinstall it.
So, I'm so update and dying for help.  Can someone please teach me how to make my Macbook understand that I only have one account and let me update iMovie and iwork? Also, how to restore the accidentally deleted Keynotes?
    Thank you!!!

You're just going to have to get back to the support folks with your Apple ID problem - http://www.apple.com/support/appleid/.
They should be able to rectify the problem.

  • How can I record narration with no video or beyond the end of my video in iMovie?

I have a question about recording narration in iMovie.
I wrote a script to read as the narration for a movie I'm making. My thought was I could record the narration first, then add video to match the spoken words.
I've done this before in Sony Vegas on my PC and it worked out well, better than trying to speak to what was going on in the video after I record the video.
Unfortunately, if I try to record narration in iMovie without any video being there yet, it won't record. It appears I need to put a video clip on the timeline first.
If I put a short clip in and try to record narration beyond the end of it, iMovie quits recording at the end of the video clip.
So I went to quicktime and recorded my narration there and have 10 audio files (since I just don't seem to be able to read this whole script without making mistakes).
I then tried to add all 10 to my movie and I think it made me add a video clip first, but after I did, iMovie overlayed all 10 audio files on top of each other.
If I try to drag them over one at a time, I still can't get them to go sequentially unless I add more video to my movie.
There must be a way to add audio files or create narration without having to create a video file longer than your audio first.  Isn't there?
I just can't seem to find a way to get the audio files layed out one after another without more video.  Very frustrating.
At this point, I really want to know how to add audio files beyond the end of my video since I have them all recorded.
But I'd also like to know how to record narration beyond the end of the video too for future projects.
    Thanks!
    Brad

You could insert a bunch of placeholders in the timeline before doing the voiceover.
You can find a range of placeholders (they are actually templates used in iMovie Trailers) in the Maps, Backgrounds & Animatics browser. This is the last browser at the end of the centre toolbar, after the Titles and Transitions browsers. Click on it and scroll down to see all the animatics (aka placholders or templates). Drag a number of these into your project timeline - as many as you think you need to cover your audio.
When you've finished the voiceover, drag photos directly onto the animatics and select Replace from the pop-up menu. Adjust the timing by using the Inspector (double-click a photo to open the Inspector, then change the duration).

  • How can i get an MP4 video file to work in iMovie 08'?

How do i go about acheiving this?

Autoplay is not universally supported by all devices.  Many smatphone data plans can't handle the burden of preloaded and auto playing media.  There's nothing you can do to change this b/c mobile devices simply ignore the parameter.   All that said, why are you still using player plugins?  You don't need them with HTML5 video.
Copy & paste this code into a new, blank document.  Change video files to your own.

  • My experiences of importing different formats into IMovie...!!

I’ve been through a lot of pain with IMovie for the last 6 months, and cracked it a couple of days ago. I therefore feel the need to write about my experiences.
I have lots of old footage on:-
    1. DV tape
    2. HI8 tapes
    3. Sony mini-DVDs
    4. DVDs
    5. Sony standard def hard disk camcorder files.
    1. DV tape
This was a joy to import. OK, so I had to invest a small amount of cash to buy a new cheapie DV camcorder (as my old one broke years ago), but the import itself was easy. Just connect the camcorder, the import window appears, and away to go. Events are imported with the correct date and time, and it even creates a new event for different days imported.
    2. HI8 tapes
As I’ve only got a few of these, I decided to ‘cheat’, so I’ve recorded them onto DVDs using my domestic DVD recorder sitting under my TV. So the problem is shifted from HI8 tapes onto DVDs.
    3. Sony mini-DVDs
I’ve been trying to crack this issue for months. Clips are imported in random order, even though they are shown in the correct order in the preview. Hopefully it will get sorted. See the following thread:-
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9404421&tstart=0
    4. DVDs
Haven’t tried this yet, until the mini-DVD issue is sorted. I might go down the road of converting the VIDEO_TS folders into DV files using MPEG Streamclip from squared5.com but I’d rather wait and import them ‘properly’ as the software intended.
    5. Sony standard def hard disk camcorder files.
    Now this is the biggie…..
I had about 1,000 MPEG2 files on my hard disk, that I’ve moved from my camcorder over the years. To my annoyance, when I switched from a PC to the Mac, I needed to buy the MPEG add-on to Quicktime. OK, so no big deal, but even then, all I could get was the video with no sound. After weeks of digging about, I found out that the reason there was no sound is because apparently Quicktime can’t handle MPEG files with AC3 dolby digital sound. As all of my files are recorded in this format, this was a major hurdle.
I then dug around and discovered that on the Sony CD that comes with the camcorder, there is a utility to down mix the AC3 audio to stereo. But it can only do one file at a time – no good for 1,000 files.
Even so, I tried a few files, and yes – they now played under Quicktime WITH audio.
But when doing an import into IMovie 09, the files are greyed out and cannot be selected. So back to the drawing board...
I then looked into various bits of software, finally deciding to get MPEG Streamclip, in order to convert the files in something more Apple friendly.
I did lots of experiments over many weeks in converting files to different formats for import into IMovie, and even though some of them looked excellent, when exporting to different sized export files (e.g. IPod, AppleTV), some of them had artifacts and shimmering all over the place.
Reluctantly I took the helpful advice of someone to convert them into DV files. I say ‘reluctantly’ because the files are HUGE. So much so, I then shelled out (even) more cash on a Drobo to store all the converted DV files.
    Next problem...
Because MPEG Streamclip converts the files into DV files, the original date and time information is lost. This is a real pain and means IMovie thinks all the files are 2009.
I then purchased the excellent ‘A better finder renamer’ and ‘A better finder attributes’, to see if I could rename the files. Unfortunately there is no easy way to say ‘change the date/time on the new DV file to be the same as the old MPEG file’ a thousand times over.
I then approached a company about writing a bespoke automator script to do this for me. But it was going to be expensive.
I then set about manually changing some of the dates of the files.
Even then, IMovie was getting confused during the import, and putting some of the scenes in the wrong order. Looks like because MPEG Streamclip is so quick at doing the conversion to DV, that some of the files have the same time stamp, so IMovie gets confused.
I then looked into software to slow my Mac down, so that MPEG Streamclip would run slower (I wanted to guarantee that each file out of the thousand that it created was created in a different MINUTE to the last file). This was proving fruitless however.
I then had useful discussions with Appleman1958 - see thread -
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1979095&tstart=0
who suggested that I could rename the files with the IMovie notation, i.e.
    clip-yyyy-mm-dd hh;mm;ss.ext
I even worked out how to do this automatically using ‘a better finder renamer’.
But there was still one more issue.
When the files were imported into IMovie, the thousand files would just come in as one event (unlike importing DV tape where it splits into days).
Being unhappy with this, I had a brain wave and decided to try something else. AppleMan1958 helpfully suggested putting the files into different folders “behind IMovie’s back”, something I was open to doing, but wanted to try something else first...
I resurrected my old camcorder from my attic, and filmed a few minutes of footage.
I then plugged the camcorder into my Mac. To my AMAZEMENT, the import window appeared in IMovie (just like it does for DV tapes), AND the audio played as well as the video. I was absolutely staggered.
I then noticed an ‘archive’ button within the import window, so decided to press it. It then copied the MPEG file from the camcorder onto the hard disk. But it did so in the structure of the original camcorder (i.e. it creates a series of specially named folders, just like on the camcorder).
I then decided to copy all 1,000 of my MPEG2 files into the new special structure that had just been created.
All 1,000 files were then accessible using the standard import function!!!!
(By the way – I’m sure people already know this information – and I’m in no way taking credit for any of it, as it’s probably been suggested by other people in the past).
I’ve now happily imported all of the files.
(Interestingly, a couple of times it said ‘Error!’ on importing some of the files. The third time I tried it, it worked. How random!!)
What amazes me is that now the Mac CAN seemingly handle MPEG video AND ac3 audio, whereas it can’t handle it by double-clicking the files in the finder. I can’t see why this should be the case. Also, it’s really annoying that when importing the files from hard disk, the files are totally greyed out – but it CAN import them by fooling IMovie into thinking it’s a camera archive.
Ofcourse now I’ve spent all this extra money, it’s time to dust off the old camcorder and use that for a few more years, until I pluck up the courage to go hi-def...
Hope you enjoyed reading – thought I’d share my experiences incase there are any newbies out there with similar issues. It’s annoying that Apple make it seem like childsplay to connect your new shiny camcorder to IMovie, but seem give little help in the more technical issues.
Now, if only they’ll fix the mini-DVD import bug too...!
    Brad

    Hi Brad,
when you use Streamclip to convert media, use the same name for the exported file (only with different extension). Then make a shell script calling
    touch -r origFileName.mp2 newFileName.mov
This will copy the exact time and date from origFileName.mp2 to newFileName.mov
The script may look like this (save the file, give an exec permission to it and call it in the right directory):
    #!/bin/bash
    for i in `ls *.mp2`; do
    NEWNAME=$(ls "$i" | sed -e 's/mp2/mov/')
    touch -r $i $NEWNAME
    done
You may need to adapt the extension names used (in the example above .mp2 is input file to get the date/time stamp from and .mov is the output file to stamp.
    Have fun and cheers

  • There's a bug on the new iMovie 1.2

Sorry for bad English. If you have problems with my writing, please let me know that part.
I don't know these '' things in correct English. I translated in into Korean->English.
Hello, It's about location things in editing the movie.
    1) Select the theme 'simple' thing.
    2) Double-tap a clip and select 'subject style'thing.
    3) Tap 'opening' and insert the subject.
    4) Tap twice and tap 'location'.
    5) Edit the location name. e.g., '2011.3.13'
    6) Then, split a clip into two clips.
    7) Tap twice on second, behind, or splited clip. (what the **** is the correct language in this thing? I don't know it in my mother language either. I just named it 'the second clip'.)
    8) Then, edit the location to another name. e.g., 'When she laughs,'
    9) Then, see the first clip. It's also changed with the second clip. It's same when I edit the first clip, it changes the second clip, too.
    10) You can prevent this bug through, when edit the location name on second clip, tap 'locate button'(a button which can tell where here is), and change the location name.
    11) Then, you can see the first clip and second clip have different location name.
When I make my movie, I use the 'opening style subject' on two clips. Both of the big subject have a name of that video, or characters. Usually I take the character's name on big subject.
And for the small subject, on the first one, I put the date when I took it. On the second clip, I put the location or tell the content of the movie, like 'sub-subject'.
You can see my videos on this: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=franceskisrevolution&aq=f
and find the 4 things start with '코코먼지샤넬, ~~~하다', see the very first part of that subjects.
It can tell better than my bad English.
And, the conclusion is, FIX THAT BUG ASAP. It really annoyed me and two movies are already made with that bug before I solve the problem.
Or, can you tell me how I don't caught on that bug no more, please?
To tell this bug report for you, I needed to write these in my rough second language!
And, I want PRECISION EDITOR RIGHT ON MY iPHONE. I promise, to buy the new iPad and I can use that function on my iPad, as soon as it ships? shipped? in my country. I loved the iPad but it's too old when it shipped on my country. iPad 2 is new, as you very well know.
But I'll not use the iPad on my way to get around. For 20~60 seconds of video, I don't need that 4x big iPhone without phone. Okay? It's too much and I love apple's things because they are absolutely not 'too much', it's easy to use. Why you just disabled that very best cool thing on really cool app of iMovie, on that very smart phone? I really disappointed on it. Don't do that stupid thing again.
    Thanks.
This is Korean version. If you have some Korean engineers, use this script and tell that iMovie makers. It'll be better than that rough English.

  • Can I script the changing of creation date, using the file name?

Normally people are doing this in reverse, but let me paint the picture.
I pulled 204 video files from an old HDD based JVC camera.  JVC records in .MOD format which iPhoto won't import.  I imported them into iMovie just fine, and iMovie even set the file name to clip-2007-11-04 04;42;29.mov which is great, but it now has a new creation date of whatever date I imported it.  Which then causes problem when I want the videos stored in iPhoto and sorted appropriately by creation date.
I've used the application "A Better Finder Attributes 5" to individually edit the creation and modify, but I'm sure I don't want to do this 203 more times, as you can't just type in the date and time, you have to type in each part of the date/time, or select it on a calendar.
I've used the application "Name Changer" to batch convert the file names to the format YYYYMMDDhhmm which would be helpful if I were going to use the terminal command touch -t, but again I don't want to have to type it in 203 more times, plus drag and drop the file into finder to populate the location.
Now, if I were more handy with automator, or maybe some (any) scripting language this would be easy peasy.  I'd batch rename all the files to the YYYYMMDDhhmm.mov and then have a script that just took the file name, passed that to touch -t along with the file location, and a few seconds later, they would all be done!
Anybody have any suggestions to how I can do this, and tips to what commands to use or ANY advice?  I'm more than happy to RTFM, but I have no idea which manual to read!
    Thanks

If your file names are precisely as you have written, this script will do what you want.
Copy the script into an AppleScript Editor document, select one or more files in a Finder window, return to the AS Editor and press Run.  Note: you will need to provide your password when the script runs.
Make sure you have a backup of any files you are working on (try using duplicates first, perhaps). The script has no error handling.
    tell application "Finder"
              set FileList to selection
              repeat with theFile in FileList
set fileName to name of theFile
set filePath to quoted form of (POSIX path of (theFile as alias))
set crYear to text 6 thru 9 of fileName
set crMonth to text 11 thru 12 of fileName
set crDay to text 14 thru 15 of fileName
set crHour to text 17 thru 18 of fileName
set crMins to text 20 thru 21 of fileName
set crDate to crYear & crMonth & crDay & crHour & crMins

    Script: Stack Frame
    Language: Javascript
    Version: CS6
    Description:
When doing product renderings, I often render out animations as image sequences, each frame consisting of several layers. Each layer is output as a separate file. For example:
    image_finalColor_0001.jpg
    image_finalColor_0002.jpg
    image_finalColor_0003.jpg
    image_Alpha_0001.jpg
    image_Alpha_0002.jpg
    image_Alpha_0003.jpg
    image_SurfID_0001.jpg
    image_SurfID_0002.jpg
    image_SurfID_0003.jpg
    etc.
This script would 'stack' each frame in Bridge, and also create a separate layered PSD file for each, so that the result, in bridge, looks like this:
    image_finalColor_0001.jpg [stack]
    image_finalColor_0002.jpg [stack]
    image_finalColor_0003.jpg [stack]
    image_0001.psd
    image_0002.psd
    image_0003.psd
    Requirements:
Two ways to start run the script:
Right-click any file and select 'stack frame' from the drop-down to analyze a single frame
Menubar > Stacks > 'stack frames' to analyze all frames in folder
Beginning with the end of the filename, script loops backward through each character until it finds a number. It then continues back until it finds a non-number, and stops, storing the last number in the filename as the 'frame number'. Examples:
    file_0001.jpg => '0001'
    file_0001_backplate.jpg => '0001'
    file_02_backplate_0001.jpg => '0001'
    file_0001_backplate_02.jpg => '02'
Script then searches other files in the folder using the same method, looking for other files with the same frame number. For example, when looking for frame 0001:
    file_0001_foreground.jpg => match
    file_foreground_0001.jpg => match
    file_02_foreground_0001.jpg => match
    file_0001_foreground_02.jpg => no match
Script selects all files containing the same frame number, and assigns them to a 'stack' in Bridge.
With the same files selected, script runs the Photoshop 'Load Files into Photoshop Layers' command
Saves resulting layered file as PSD named with the common elements of the filenames (trimming non-alphanumeric chars):
    file_0001_background.jpg + file_0001_foreground.jpg = file_0001.psd
    file_background_0001.jpg + file_foreground_0001.jpg = file_0001.psd
    file_02_background_0001.jpg + file_02_foreground_0001.jpg = file_02_0001.jpg
    file_02_background_0001.jpg + file_foreground_0001.jpg = file_0001.jpg
    foobar_file_0002_0001.jpg + file_0001_foreground.jpg = file_0001.jpg
Must exit gracefully on error and provide dialog hints where possible (e.g. 'found no matching frames' etc)
Must ignore non-image file formats (to avoid errors in the Photoshop script)
Resulting PSD layers must be in the same order for every frame where possible (so future Batch operations will work across all PSD files). Obviously this only applies if all layers are present for every frame.
    Must ROCK MAJORLY HARD!!
    Thanks again!

  • Video-shoutbox with iMac, QT or iMovie and a DV-Cam

    I want to make a Video-Shoutbox on a Party.
My idea: An iMac with a Kiosk-Software. Maybe QT-Pro can make the clips. And a DV-Cam the Videos.
What i need is a possibility to push one Button, and you can 30 seconds record on the mac. After the 30 seconds you have to push or click the button again to make a new record.
After the evening you have a folder with all the clips in it and can now edit this clips in imovie or elsewhere.
    How can i do that?

One way is with an Applescript script written to run in QuickTime Player. Here's such a script. It would be called from the kiosk screen.
Be sure to read the notes in the script.

-- Otherwise an error will occur.
-- To prevent a timeout failure with some cameras, remove tape from camera.
-- Set camera to record mode.
-- If QuickTime Player fails to see camera, re-launch QT Player.
-- Before the recording begins, the script will play a "5, 4, 3, 2, 1 Action!" movie that
-- you've recorded. (The Action! movie must be open in QuickTime Player.) Enter the name of your

  • A tip how to make iMovie '08 rescan the iPhoto library for video clips

I could not figure out how to easily force iMovie '08 to rescan all iPhoto library video clips. My problem was that my Casio S880 videos had the audio format DVI ADPCM which is not supported by iMovie '08. I made a script which transcoded all my iPhoto library videos' audio track to AAC. But after this was done, the iMovie didn't still show them in iPhoto videos. iMovie checks only for NEW entries in iPhoto Library after last scan.
One simple workaround is to duplicate the transcoded video in iPhoto and then delete the original. But if you have a lot of clips here is a better way to do this:
NOTE: This trick does not reimport already imported clips. This trick is useful only if you want to force iMovie '08 to recheck old iPhoto movie clips if they are now valid for iMovie '08 or not.
    1. Close iMovie '08
    2. Open file HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iMovie7.plist with the Property List Editor application (I think the application is part of Apple Developer Tools, I'm not sure if included in default installation). You may want to take a backup of the property file before opening it!
    3. Find "lastiPhotoXMLDate" property and change the date value to be some older date, for example if you want to scan all files just change the year part to 1980 or similar.
    4. Save the property file
    5. Open iMovie '08, it should now check all iPhoto movie clips again if they are valid for iMovie '08.
The same thing can be achieved by just deleting the HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iMovie7.plist file, but then you lose all your other settings.

I apologize for my confusion on your question.  I find that depending on the principal of each photo and my target audience to determine the time frame for each photo.  It seems most people get impatient with viewing one photo for more than 1-2 seconds if the photo is not complex.
If there are several things that interests the viewers in any one image, they want to look at it a second or two longer.  If the movie of images is a training aid, the images may need to be more than 3 seconds.  For intro's, or a trailer for a training movie, no longer than 1-2 seconds.
That was a long answer to say, generally speaking, I find 3 seconds to be an average time length.

  • Issues with still photos (size/cropping) in IMovie

    Hi,
I been searching and despite trying to solve this issue myself and through taking the advice given in similar posts, I still have not been able to resolve this issue.
When making a video/movie, my still pictures get cut up. The tops are noticeably cut and I didn't crop anything. I played with the widescreen vs. normal options, and still, tops are definitely cut off. There are several portrait or people pictures that are taken vertically instead of the "normal" horizontally for size or angle reasons. Another thing to note is that I do have a WIDE ANGLE camera. Some pictures it is absolutely essential that I have the FULL photo in, so what do I do?????? I been here for HOURS trying "trial and error" and I am getting soooo frustrated. ANd who is this Ken Burns guy?
I am learning here but need some assistance. Thanks!

You can disable Ken Burns by going to the Rotate, Crop, Ken Burns Tab in the Inspector and choosing FIT or CROP. FIT will force your photo to fit the aspect ratio of the movie by adding black space.
CROP will chop off the top or bottom to make it fit. You will want to FIT.
Unless you would like to use the Ken Burns effect.....read on.
As you have observed, neither of these are ideal for portrait-oriented photos.
In iPhoto, the Ken Burns effect will automatically add black space so that portrait photos will work. However, in iMovie, there is no way to automatically add black space for Ken burns.
You can go into a photo editor like photoshop and add black bars to the side so that Ken Burns will work properly.
There is a way to do this automatically, and without using Photoshop, if you take the time to learn how to use Automator, which is a workflow tool that comes with your Mac.
(You can find Automator by clicking the spotlight magnifying lass at the top right of your screen. Then type in Automator.)
Set up an Automator Workflow to
    1. Ask for Photos (You must select one or more photos and hit Select - you can make this easier by putting them in an album beforehand)
    2. Copy Finder Items (give it a folder to copy to- so you can find them easily)
    3. Pad Images. (put a check mark in "scale image before padding" and set for dimensions of your project.
Hit Run and a dialog box will come up asking you to select photos. When you are finished, press SELECT and the Automator script will keep running.
Then at the end you should have padded images in the folder you created in step 2.
Before you try Automator, take a look at [this website for some tutorials and videos.|http://automator.us/leopard>
There is a [Good Website here that includes Automator and Services for Snow Leopard|http://www.macosxautomation.com/index.html]
Here is the [Apple Discussions group for Automator|http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=1261]
If you create an Automator Workflow that you like, and you have Snow Leopard, you can create a SERVICE so that when you select a Photo in iPhoto or the Finder and right-click, your Workflow will be available on the contextual menu.
